‘Joshua made peace with them’ [Joshua 9:15]
July 1
‘Joshua made peace with them’. He was deceived by the Gibeonites who came to him in old shoes and clothing and with dry mouldy bread suggesting they had travelled a long way, whereas they were near neighbours.
Joshua used his judgment and accepted a peace deal. But he did not seek guidance from the Lord. He thought this was a decision he could make on his own.
This peace treaty compounded Joshua’s problems and gave him extra people to defend and protect.
His peace with the Gibeonites soon involved him with warfare against the five kings that attacked them.
The Israelites honoured their peace treaty and God gave Joshua a victorious day when the sun and moon stood still. It reminds us we need to consult the Lord in all matters.
