‘Some Jews … tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus’. They saw Paul casting out evil spirits in the Name of Jesus and these exorcists decided to try the same.
Because they took the name of the Lord in vain they suffered such a beating at the hands of the demon-possessed man that all seven of them ran from the house naked and bleeding. To masquerade under the name of Jesus when one knows nothing of His cleansing, forgiveness and salvation is a foolish course to take. It may attract respect from some quarters but it incurs the wrath of God that is revealed against all unrighteousness.
Because of this incident the fear of God fell on all who heard about it and the Lord’s Name was glorified. God will be glorified but let it be from the hearts of those who love Him.
