SUMMARY:"They feared the Lord\, and served their own gods" [II Kings 17:33]
DESCRIPTION:“They feared the Lord\, and served their own gods” .A priest was sent into their midst to teach them how they should fear the Lord: but this was done alongside the existing idolatry in the land.\nEarlier we read how\, when professing to follow the Lord\, the children of Israel secretly did those things against the Lord that were not right. Their apparent godliness was a pretence or show\, like a shop window dressed to create the impression that all was well inside. But inside their homes\, those who came to dwell in Samaria\, worshipped all kinds of gods.\nIf they wanted to avoid a repetition of the judgment brought when lions rampaged among the people\, this was the wrong way to go about it. Worshipping the Lord must be an exclusive engagement.

SUMMARY:"the noise was heard afar off" [Ezra 3:13]
DESCRIPTION:“the noise was heard afar off” .Praises of God are joyful and deserve to be loud too so that others may hear. The crowd in the sports stadium can be heard outside\, why not the people of God when enough of them meet together to make that joyous sound?\nThe noise referred to in Ezra was a mixture of shouts for joy and sound of weeping. Both brought honour to God. Older ones wept for joy at the memory of what the first temple looked like. Many others shouted for joy.\nWhen God is in the midst of His people\, joy and weeping mingle naturally. Has the noise of your salvation reached the ears of others? The life-changing experience of the Spirit is something we must hear about.

SUMMARY:"they wondered what the outcome would be" [Acts 5:24(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they wondered what the outcome would be” .Not just the high priest and captain of the temple but all who oppose the gospel have cause to wonder. The infidel who sought to burn every Bible\, the persecutor who put the followers of Jesus on the stake and the atheist who would close all churches\, all fail to realise that He who attacks the Christian fights against God and that is a very uneven contest.\nTime has shown us the outcome: lives committed to Christ and willing to follow Him and suffer if necessary in His Name. See the outcome as the Bride of Christ descends from heaven and the description of an eternal city populated by the saved and where sin\, sorrow and all that defiles is excluded for ever. The future is glorious.

SUMMARY:"joy in heaven over one sinner who repents" [Luke 15:7(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“joy in heaven over one sinner who repents” .The one thing that sets heaven rejoicing is when a sinner turns from his sin and seeks God’s forgiveness. This sets heaven aglow with joy. The angelic choir performed a joyful anthem announcing the Incarnation. How they marvelled that their King should come to save us! Salvation was secured for us at great cost – Jesus fought against the forces of evil all the way to the Cross.\nBut the trickle of believers that began soon swelled into three thousand on the Day of Pentecost and today repentant sinners are as a mighty world-wide river.\nAnd Jesus describes each repentant sinner setting the joy-bells of heaven ringing afresh. Let us keep those joy-bells ringing by preaching and proclaiming the need for men to repent.

SUMMARY:"the one who wants to teach you for your own good" [Isaiah 48:17(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“the one who wants to teach you for your own good” .The Lord who saves us wants to teach us for our own good. Some lessons in life seem unnecessary: many are difficult and we would escape the course if we could.\nAll who have placed their lives in the hand of the Lord\, having repented of their sin\, called upon Him for forgiveness\, received the assurance of salvation and His gift of eternal life\, know that all things work for good.\nAt the beginning of the way we know nothing: the Lord walks with us and in all life’s varying emotions and seasons we may discern every lesson to have been arranged by the Master for our good.\nHe does not withhold or take away\, as some may think\, but gives generously into every part of our life.

SUMMARY:"I have all I need here among my own people" [II Kings 4:13(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“I have all I need here among my own people” .This was the Shunammite woman’s reply to Elisha when he suggested that in return for her kindness and effort\, her name might be put forward for promotion to the palace.\nYet while the woman was saying she had all she needed\, her heart yearned for a son. The Lord knew this and gave Elisha the prophecy that by next year she would have a son.\nSome of us may say that we have all we need now we belong to the Lord. Yet at the same time we do have a need for more of the Lord\, true growth in grace and expansion in His service.\nThe Lord has not changed: he is ever waiting to lead His followers into new and satisfying pasture.

SUMMARY:"test yourselves" [II Corinthians 13:5(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“test yourselves” .Modern medical practice relies on this more than ever. You have a medication or are provided with a piece of equipment to test yourself – be it blood pressure\, sugar\, cholesterol and so on. Testing yourself usually means that before someone else points it out to you or your condition deteriorates you can do something about it.\nNow the same holds good for your spiritual condition – whether you are in the faith as you ought to be. Testing is necessary because things do go wrong and correction is needed. Are the expressions of love for Christ evident in your life – love for His word\, His people\, His work? Does worship arise in your heart?\nTest yourself remembering that love must be paramount.

SUMMARY:"whatever you ask in my name" [John 14:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“whatever you ask in my name” .A personal bank account enables bills to be paid\, cash withdrawn and other monetary transactions made in the easiest possible way. All this is done in the name of the bank and operation of the account must be within prescribed limits.\nThis can be likened to the account God has made available to His children and which operates in the Name of His Son. Business is conducted on an ‘ask and receive’ basis in the Name of Jesus.\nAt times account holders do go outside the conditions and wonder why nothing takes place. Such a request is selfish or self-originating and made without recourse to the Name they plead.\nPerhaps worst of all are those who ask for nothing – they never receive anything!

SUMMARY:"Better … a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city" [Proverbs 16:32(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Better … a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city” .Living with a violent temper is like dwelling at the foot of a volcano. At any time there may be an eruption. A man may oversee an army yet himself be enslaved by that evil called temper.\nSteering your own life aright is more important than sorting out the course others should take. We shall each one be primarily responsible for what we have done with our own lives.\nAs one stroke of the hand can demolish the tower of bricks a child has laboriously built\, so can temper sweep away the good that has accumulated over a long period.\nIt is not what you have coerced others to gain for you or even acquired by your own arm\, but how you’ve controlled yourself that is most important.

SUMMARY:"Let your light so shine" [Matthew 5:16]
DESCRIPTION:“Let your light so shine” .Are you shining your light in the right place?\nMany will recall having to hold the torch for someone to see and do a job. And some of us will recall being told to shine the light in the right place. Waving it around or shining it up into the air is of no use.\nI trust you have the heavenly light – Jesus\, who is the light of men. Though a heavenly light\, it needs to be shone on earth – just where you are today! A hand-held torch cannot give light a thousand metres away but it can be invaluable at one metre.\nThough all living in this world\, we face many differing situations. What does your Christian light show around you today? It should be showing your good works and glorifying your Father in heaven.

SUMMARY:"I will make known your faithfulness to all generations" [Psalm 89:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I will make known your faithfulness to all generations” .How did the Psalmist propose making God’s faithfulness known to all generations? Certainly\, God’s faithfulness does extend to all generations. No one will arise to find His faithfulness exhausted. Whoever puts their trust in the Lord will never be confounded.\nEach one of us should proclaim God’s faithfulness to our generation. And as that proclamation affects others and they in turn proclaim its truth\, generations that follow are blessed.\nOur testimony should be of God’s faithfulness and where it has been manifest against the backcloth of our gross failure and unfaithfulness that testimony can be the more telling. It is when we do not make it known but keep these things to ourselves that stagnation results.

SUMMARY:"all the money that a man purposes in his heart to bring" [II Kings 12:4(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“all the money that a man purposes in his heart to bring” .True gifts are free-will offerings. They are those that a man purposes in his heart to give and is not coerced or pressured into doing so in any way. These are the gifts the Lord loves to receive. In many instances we give because it is difficult to refuse. True gifts are given out of love for the Lord\, for His work. These the Lord uses to rebuild breaches made by the passing of time or by other’s neglect. Giving comes before receiving. We all have something to give\, however small it may be. Give that\, and more will be received. It is when we purpose in our heart to give that God gives to us – in greater measure and more abundantly than we ever could think. We also see the increase of His work through our gift.

SUMMARY:"visit the fatherless and widows" [James 1:27]
DESCRIPTION:“visit the fatherless and widows” .Practical Christian living must pay special attention to orphans and widows. In fact\, James says that the truth of one’s faith is characterised by it. There is an old saying “a ha’porth (half penny) of help is worth more than a cart load of pity” and the Apostle tells us we are to visit those in need and no doubt to take help and speak a word of comfort.\nNothing can really take the place of a visit\, though other ministries are important. The visitor should recognise the affliction that these people suffer. Best of all is when the visitor can say “I know because I’ve been there”.\nWill someone be getting such a visit from you today? Or are you the one in need of the visit. Both give opportunity for the expression of what James calls “pure religion”.

SUMMARY:"Do not labour for the food which perishes" [John 6:27(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Do not labour for the food which perishes” .You have to work – the curse upon man in the Garden of Eden was that in toil he would eat from the fruit of the ground. And the Apostle Paul wrote that if a man would not work\, he should not eat.\nHere Jesus is telling us not to labour exclusively for material things. There is a food which endures to everlasting life and the danger is that in pursuing material food you neglect the things of the Spirit.\nGod will provide for us as He does for the birds of the air and flowers of the field. We need to put our effort into the Kingdom of God. We need to let our lives be lived for God’s glory. By means of the saving grace that flows from Calvary\, be a “paid up” member of God’s kingdom.

SUMMARY:"he had seen an angel in his house" [Acts 11:13]
DESCRIPTION:“he had seen an angel in his house” .Cornelius was a centurion in the Roman militia and outside the pale of those to whom angels might appear.\nIf it had not been that Peter had a vision\, he would have written off Cornelius’ experience. But Peter had a vision as he fell into a trance and God gave him a thrice repeated instruction that cut right across his tradition about keeping Jewish ‘food-laws’.\nPeter was sensible enough to listen and heed what God was saying and it was he who later related to the Apostles’ Committee in Jerusalem that Cornelius had an angel in his house. We are told that angels are ministering spirits\, ministering to those who are heirs of salvation. When human agency fails\, thank God for angels!

SUMMARY:"seven thousand in Israel\, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal" [I Kings 19:18(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“seven thousand in Israel\, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal” .When you feel you stand alone or when you conclude the whole world lies in wickedness\, to realise that there are those in every place who have not bowed the knee to Baal is a great encouragement. The blessing of this truth may not have become immediately apparent to Elijah\, for he was in the depths of depression. But one great blessing of his depression is that we’ve come to hear these comforting words.\nAll seven thousand may not have thought precisely as Elijah did: there may have been a variety of interpretations both of the Law of Moses and of current trends of the day. But all that number had\, by inference\, made the Lord Jehovah their God. And today hundreds of thousands have made Jesus Lord of their life.

SUMMARY:"a voice from heaven" [Mark 1:11]
DESCRIPTION:“a voice from heaven” .This is not heard very often! Neither are signs in the sky seen for that matter. Once or twice in the life of Christ and occasionally in the Acts of the Apostles and sometimes since an audible voice has been heard. Yet for the most part we need to be in tune with heaven to receive those heavenly messages that indicate God’s way for us.\nSo\, though you don’t hear a voice from heaven\, do keep in touch with the Lord by prayer\, meditation and the reading of His word. Look and listen for Him speaking to you.\nIt is certain that you need guidance and affirmation from heaven on the heavenly way. Faith in Christ does not merely save you and leave you to find your own way. It’s a narrow way you walk today but listen for His voice from heaven.

SUMMARY:"he did not know that his life was in danger" [Proverbs 7:23(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“he did not know that his life was in danger” .Much of this chapter in the Book of Proverbs is taken up with an inexperienced and foolish young man who became ensnared with a prostitute. We read how she tempted him with her charms and he gave in to her smooth talk.\nNext\, we see him going with her like an ox on the way to be slaughtered\, like a deer prancing into a trap where an arrow would pierce its heart.\nThis is not the picture painted for us by the media today. There the observer is not told his life is in danger if he follows in her path and the picture is faded out before the slaughter takes place or the trap snaps shut.\nBetter never to set foot on a slippery path than be on it and find you can’t get off.

SUMMARY:"the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame" [Romans 9:33(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame” .The Apostle Paul said he was not ashamed of the gospel of Christ. And all who trust in the Lord will find they have no need to be ashamed.\nIt is the devil who seeks to make us timid and to keep our faith to ourselves. There is nothing to be ashamed about and yet all too often we are ashamed to testify. The Apostle Peter asks “Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? And even if you suffer for doing right you are blessed”.\nPerfect trust casts out fear. Peter said\, “Do not fear their (the opponents of the gospel) threats; do not be frightened”. Keep close to Jesus: trust Him and receive Him into every part of life – you’ll never be ashamed.

SUMMARY:"Are you also still without understanding? " [Matthew 15:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Are you also still without understanding? ” .With these words Jesus reproved His disciples for being dull. He knew what they were capable of and that they had not attained their potential. It is to be feared that we often fall into the same category. Peter on behalf of the disciples asked Jesus to explain the parable of the blind leading the blind. He could not understand how these words applied to the Pharisees. Had their concentration been wandering as Jesus was speaking? Had they stopped trying to learn and just depended on the Presence of their Master with them?\nSpiritual understanding is a gift bestowed by the Holy Spirit. Whether conveyed by another person as when Philip talked to the eunuch as he travelled in his chariot or directly\, we need to ever feed upon the word of the Lord.

SUMMARY:"Would God my lord were with the prophet" [II Kings 5:3]
DESCRIPTION:“Would God my lord were with the prophet” .How grateful all could be that the servant girl gave expression to her thoughts! It often takes a servant to say what others only dare think. Furthermore\, how good that this girl was concerned for her master! Maybe his service gave her a sense of belonging and she felt her future lay in his hands.\nPerhaps best of all was that she had a faith and a conviction that\, properly approached\, the prophet in Samaria could do something. The servant girl knew better than the noblemen: she said go to the prophet. That he chose to go to the king resulted in a problem. Let more servants of a greater Master be bold and say what they think today. This can only result in more being delivered from their spiritual leprosy.

SUMMARY:"enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul" [Acts 9:11]
DESCRIPTION:“enquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul” .We should not forget the house of Judas. If Judas had not lived in Straight Street\, Saul could not have been found there though Ananias knocked on every door. No great acclaim for what Judas did – he just offered to put up travellers and encouraged them along the way. Judas was at least sympathetic to the Christians if he was not one himself. He must have tried to give comfort and succour to Saul\, though perhaps a little suspicious of him.\nPut simply\, he did not mind taking on Saul of Tarsus\, a man confused\, temporarily blinded\, covered in dust and most likely forsaken by his entourage. You may feel you can identify with Judas. The Lord will bless you if you have the same ministry.

SUMMARY:"So you will be my people\, and I will be your God" [Jeremiah 30:22(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“So you will be my people\, and I will be your God” .The Old Testament prophets show us the difficulty God was having with His people. As we read in this chapter\, their wound (received when turning away from the Lord) was incurable and their injury beyond healing. Guilt was great and their sins many and God had to punish them.\nIn the New Testament we read that no chastisement is pleasant. But God knows what He is about and God’s assurance to His people in whatever generation they were called upon to serve Him\, would come through the instruction and correction and be to His glory.\nIt is a two way promise – we will be His and He will be ours. Don’t dwell on present conditions\, but the promise of God for the future.

SUMMARY:"I am innocent" [Matthew 27:24]
DESCRIPTION:“I am innocent” .This is what Pontius Pilate hoped would be the accepted verdict. By an overwhelming majority the world has pronounced him guilty. He had said earlier ‘What shall I do with Jesus?’ While he was free to take advice\, that did not absolve him from responsibility. Pilate allowed the crowd to sway his better judgment. He had told them he found no fault in Jesus. He gave orders for Him to be crucified and then tried to say he was not responsible – innocent\, in fact.\nGoing with the crowd has been the downfall of many. Each of us individually has responsibility for the life that is given to us. An important part of that responsibility is what we do with Jesus. If we reject and deny Him\, we cannot say we are innocent. Such action crucifies again the Son of God Who came to save us from our sin.

SUMMARY:"a highway for our God" [Isaiah 40:3]
DESCRIPTION:“a highway for our God” .In the apparent desert wastes of this world\, the Lord is preparing a highway for His return. Unseen by human eye\, the Holy Spirit oversees the preparation that is going ahead. The Kingdom is already established in the heart of every believer where Jesus reigns as Lord.\nJesus said He would come again and attention to this promise has not been neglected. God is building His church in purity and holiness with Holy Spirit power.\nThe signs of the times\, the fulfilment of prophecy\, the fear in the heart of non-believers and the turning to Christ of tens of thousands in hitherto backwaters of the world tell us the highway is almost complete for the arrival of the King.

SUMMARY:"Sarah your wife shall bear you a son" [Genesis 17:19(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Sarah your wife shall bear you a son” .When Abraham suggested to God that Ishmael would be the son through whom God would fulfil His promises\, the Lord repeated that Sarah would bear him a son.\nWhen there appears to be delay in the fulfilment of a promise\, we are not out of place to seek confirmation. It is natural to question whether it is His promise or our imagination. When it is God’s promise He may be expected to confirm it to us.\nSarah had doubted the promise and offered her maid as a compromise. Ishmael was born but the whole thing was a failure. Then it was Abraham’s turn to doubt and offer to accept Ishmael as substitute.\nBut God reiterated His promise and miraculously fulfilled it. Delaying the answer enhanced the miracle.

SUMMARY:"Will you not revive us again\, That your people may rejoice in you? " [Psalm 85:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Will you not revive us again\, That your people may rejoice in you? ” .Here are two cardinal truths. First\, that revival comes from the Lord. It comes down: we do not stir it up. It revives dying embers (or members) and is a breath from heaven and it makes all the difference. It is to the Lord our eyes should be looking for revival – not on our planning skill and ability.\nSecond\, when revival comes it brings true joy and rejoicing. It is a blessed state of heart.\nRevival from the Lord is no palliative or transient euphoria. Experiencing it leaves the recipient in no doubt about its blessing and its effect fills all with deep and overflowing joy. It appears to come in waves\, perhaps related to our falling away\, so we need to ask the Lord to revive us again.

SUMMARY:"he … found Elisha … ploughing" [I Kings 19:19(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he … found Elisha … ploughing” .God calls His servants from industry\, not from idleness! If you are doing nothing with your life except waiting for God to call you\, it is likely He never will.\nPloughing is a good illustration of what we should be doing in the field of life where God has placed us. Ploughing is preparing the ground for sowing. Some scatter seed without preparation on ground that is too hard\, too shallow or full of weeds\, causing more to be lost than necessary.\nThe Word of God tells us to plough in hope: to break up our own fallow ground for it is time to seek the Lord. If I am to lead others to Christ\, I must be led by Him myself: if I am to call others to responsibility I must have been responsible to the Lord myself. It is no surprise that Elisha made a good servant of the Lord.

SUMMARY:"Let him go home so that his brothers will not become disheartened too" [Deuteronomy 20:8(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Let him go home so that his brothers will not become disheartened too” .An unusual order the officers of the Children of Israel were told to give\, but sensible when you think about it.\nDead weights slow down progress and the afraid and fainthearted can have a bad influence in the battle of the Lord.\nVictory is assured to those who trust in the Lord; but the work of the Lord calls for full dedication. Gideon won his battle after he sent home all who did not want to fight.\nIf you’re going to dishearten others\, it’s better you stay at home. But best is when you’re strong in the Lord and the power of His might. We need you to inspire others\, not discourage them!

SUMMARY:"He is a good man" [II Samuel 18:27]
DESCRIPTION:“He is a good man”. This is the only thing we’re told about him\, yet what better epitaph could he ask! His name is Ahimaaz son of Zadok and few know of him. He came running from the battlefield to tell king David that the insurrection was over.\nWe are grateful to the watchman who saw him running towards them with the news for saying that he looked like Ahimaaz and the king added “he is a good man”.\nOur world needs good men: good men of this calibre stand out. True goodness is something we need to seek. Peter said\, “Who is he that will harm you if you are a follower of that which is good?”\nThe goodness we need is the righteousness that is of God by faith. Get the goodness of God inside by faith in Christ and the impression you make will be that of “a good man”.
