SUMMARY:"I have written briefly" [I Peter 5:12]
DESCRIPTION:“I have written briefly”. Then it’s unlikely your letter will bore the reader. Your letter will deal with the things that matter. Because brief\, it will most likely be read.\nWhat you say will not be so long and complicated that the reader either doesn’t know where to start or forgets half you’ve written. Lots of people will be made glad if you write briefly and because you’re brief you’ll have time to write to lots of people.\nNow if you’ve never written a letter of encouragement\, or it’s so long ago you’ve forgotten\, get the ink flowing through your pen again. Look around you: lots of people need encouragement: life’s quite hard for some. They’ll appreciate the letter you write\, reading it again and again\, delighted you’ve taken time to consider them. And do keep it brief.

SUMMARY:"a left-handed man" [Judges 3:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“a left-handed man”. Years ago people who were left-handed were made to use their right hand for writing and other everyday tasks. Thankfully God had no such prejudice and used Ehud’s left-handedness to act unexpectedly and bring an end to the oppression of Israel under king Eglon. It’s surprising what God can use for His purposes. There may be things about you that make you feel odd or vulnerable or simply mark you out as being different. The pressure of society is to conform and be like everyone else. Well don’t dismiss the impact small differences can make\, especially under the blessing of the Lord.\nWhether in speech\, actions or our way of living\, offer yourself to the Lord for His glory today.

SUMMARY:"my salvation shall be for ever" [Isaiah 51:6]
DESCRIPTION:“my salvation shall be for ever”. God’s salvation stands as a lighthouse in the stormy seas of life. We work and plan as though we are in this scene of time for ever. We make as little mention as we can of the reality of death and destruction. We fail to see that the bricks we build will all topple and fall.\nGod’s salvation is the one thing that is for ever. Only this can lift a man to the plane of immortality. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners: His name was called Jesus because He would save His people from their sin. The gift of God is eternal life: it is its eternal quality that makes it different from all else.\nSalvation purchased at great cost at Golgotha is for all who will repent and receive it. God builds for eternity\, his salvation shall stand for ever.

SUMMARY:"When she heard about Jesus" [Mark 5:27(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“When she heard about Jesus”. What had she heard? Report from many of the leaders in the synagogue would be critical but from the crowds that heard Him it would be wonderfully thrilling. Not having seen Him herself\, the word of others was enough.\nShe recognised that this was the Person who could do for her what all others had failed to do. In fact\, she saw He was so powerful that merely touching the hem of His garment would gain her healing.\nHearing about Jesus is the most blessed sound that can fall on the human ear. And then to realise what He is ready to do for you and to ask Him\, whatever form that takes\, is as marvellous as this woman’s healing of a twelve year long sickness.

SUMMARY:"By faith Moses … refused" [Hebrews 11:24]
DESCRIPTION:“By faith Moses … refused”. The offer Moses refused included all the ease and comfort that Pharaoh’s court could offer. It was made on the pretext that Pharaoh’s daughter had taken a liking to him since finding him in the bulrushes.\nBut the offer was an enticement away from his real identity and from God’s purpose in his life. So it is today! The achievement of God’s plan in your life means to refuse the devil’s offer of ease and godless pleasure. Doing right must be matched by the refusal to do wrong. Refusing wrong is doing right.\nSome things may not seem harmful\, but they hinder God working in you. So Moses inherited leadership of God’s People. Exercise your right to refuse evil today.

SUMMARY:"Teach us to number our days aright" [Psalm 90:12(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Teach us to number our days aright”. We do need to value and properly use each day the Lord gives us. Today added to yesterday prepares us for tomorrow.\nFew things are completed in a day\, just as some things we need to leave for others to complete. A night’s sleep is for refreshment not for forgetting what began yesterday. God’s treatment extends from conversion to completion.\nGod’s plan for us is that we may increase in wisdom and stature as Jesus did and wisdom\, which is promised us on request\, is a degree gained in the school of experience.\nRightly numbered days may be expected to include praise and thanksgiving\, intercession and proclamation. Make today one of them.

SUMMARY:"the home of Mary\, the mother of John Mark" [Acts 12:12(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“the home of Mary\, the mother of John Mark”. A godly home in which John Mark was brought up to love the Lord and desire to serve Him. It was the centre for meaningful church activity and the natural choice for an all-night prayer meeting among the believers when Peter was imprisoned and under sentence of death. Many were gathered there because it was a place where it was good to be. No wonder it was the house that Peter made for when the angel left him on the streets of the city after releasing him from prison!\nOur churches and church fellowships may be warm and friendly and church activity and service can take a lot of time once we become disciples of the Lord. But it is in the home where we really relax and where the love and warmth of the Christian family can be best appreciated.

SUMMARY:"because you have wholly followed the Lord my God" [Joshua 14:9(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“because you have wholly followed the Lord my God”. Caleb comes to us as a quiet\, steady and godly leader. He did not seek notoriety and neither did he hesitate to speak positively about entry into the Promised Land when all but one of the other spies spoke against it.\nThroughout the forty years wandering in the wilderness\, he suffered alongside those who had brought that punishment upon Israel. God was leading him and he faithfully followed and he and Joshua were the only two of those that left Egypt who entered Canaan.\nFor this faithfulness he was rewarded with his promised inheritance. God will reward you if you follow Him though you are surrounded by godless and evil men and you feel you stand alone.

SUMMARY:"seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness" [Matthew 6:33(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness”. Too many have things in the wrong order: what they consider to be of prime importance is in fact of least value to them. The important piece to get in place in life’s jigsaw is the quest for God’s Kingdom. Make Jesus King and all else will fall into its proper place.\nStrain for the crown of this world’s glory; go for what men call achievement – you may grasp a reward\, but you will need to let it go when this life comes to its end.\nAccept the righteousness which is of God by faith; take the garment of salvation. Seek God’s will and purpose in your life – you will lay up treasure in heaven and reap an eternal reward. Get your priorities right – put God first today.

SUMMARY:"Some were convinced by what he said\, but others would not believe" [Acts 28:24(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Some were convinced by what he said\, but others would not believe”. There need be no feeling of failure if\, when you witness to someone of your faith in Jesus\, they do not believe. The Apostle Paul preached and proclaimed Christ to all who visited him in Rome for the last two years of his life and he tells us\, “Some were convinced … but others would not believe.”\nDon’t be put off when you meet with a refusal. Any salesman will tell you that.\nKeep witnessing\, keep shining for the Lord. Tell all you can\, by what you do and what you say\, that Jesus saves. There will be many who turn away. But the promise is that some seed will bear fruit and somebody somewhere will believe.

SUMMARY:"this is the promise … even eternal life" [I John 2:25]
DESCRIPTION:“this is the promise … even eternal life”. It is the greatest promise of all – it grasps a prize beyond the grave and places it in the heart of those who make Jesus Lord.\nBecause it is God’s promise\, it conveys real hope to the hearts of those who believe it. All who do\, recognise that it is made upon the efficacy of the sacrifice of God’s Son for sin upon Golgotha’s Cross. It is granted upon the merit of the complete cleansing brought about by the precious blood of Jesus that enables a believer to live for ever.\nThe wages of sin is death: but eternal life is God’s gift to those who will take Jesus as personal Saviour. That atoning death saves those who believe. Eternal life is the possession of those who stand upon God’s promise.

SUMMARY:"Faithful are the wounds of a friend" [Proverbs 27:6]
DESCRIPTION:“Faithful are the wounds of a friend”. Sometimes it is necessary to wound in order to heal: this is notably so in the case of surgery when the surgeon makes an incision to remove diseased tissue.\nIt is also true in the things of the Spirit. Our waywardness and refusal to listen and obey the voice of the Lord make it necessary to wound our spirits to cleanse them of those things that defile and hinder our growth.\nWounding after this manner is so different from wounds in battle. There is no enmity\, evil or malice in the wounds of a friend. All is done for our good.\nWe need faith to understand that when the Lord hurts it is to heal\, when He withholds it is to give more abundantly.\nTrust the Lord and see there is good in all His treatment.

SUMMARY:"But you were unwilling to go up" [Deuteronomy 1:26(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But you were unwilling to go up”. It was a contest between God’s word and the Israelites’ reasoning. They listened to the gloomy report of the majority of the spies. Their minds operated on an earthly level and did not take into account that the God who had brought them so mightily out of Egypt’s bondage could take them into the land He had chosen for them.\nRely on human reasoning and you’ll accomplish little. Have faith in His word and see the way open up ahead.\nArm yourself with His word and His promise to be with you always and you’ll not fear to go up no matter how steep and winding the path to the summit may look. Take the first step and continue to press ahead – you’ll look back on all the way He has led you.\nDon’t you be unwilling any more.

SUMMARY:"he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem" [Luke 9:51]
DESCRIPTION:“he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem”. Jesus’ task was greater than anyone living had ever performed or ever could perform. The path that lay before Him was one of suffering. He who was holy\, harmless and undefiled was to bear the sin of the world and be sacrificed as the Lamb of God after the cruel trial and mocking in Jerusalem.\nHe did so and triumphed gloriously over sin and death and became a living Saviour and Lord\, risen from the dead and alive for evermore. He did so because at a certain point in His life on earth\, when Jerusalem and all it held came before Him\, He steadfastly set His face as a flint\, determined to go ahead and pay the price for our ransom.\nRealisation of this must cause our hearts to well up in praise and adoration for our glorious Lord Jesus.

SUMMARY:"in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord" [I Peter 3:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord”. This is not an outward form or observance or conforming to a pattern laid down for you. It is not erecting an altar in a corner or a part of your life.\nIt is setting up a throne room in the very centre of your being and inviting Christ to reign there. It cannot be done without turning out whatever we held in that place of honour before. It is not a room full of idols that we worship\, but a place where Christ reigns alone.\nThe Lord will be working in every part of your life only when He is set apart in your heart as Lord. He will reign supreme when He rules supreme. Ascribe greatness to the Lord: exalt His mighty Name. When the throne room is within you your whole life becomes a peal of praise and worship.

SUMMARY:"He knows your trudging through this great wilderness" [Deuteronomy 2:7(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He knows your trudging through this great wilderness”. Forty years wandering in the desert might aptly be described as trudging.\nIn many ways our world is like a great wilderness and the path we sometimes need to take may call for trudging.\nThere are times when all of us wonder if we’ve missed the way: at others whether we’ll ever reach the promised goal.\nBut God’s Word is sure and the promise that He will never leave you or forsake you transcends the hardship.\nThe Children of Israel had a daily reminder of God’s provision throughout their journey in the manna and quails provided for them. They should also have realised the Lord gave them divine health and preserved them. Call it a trudge if you will\, but realise the Lord knows every step you take.

DESCRIPTION:“Everyone living in Jerusalem knows”. The blessings of the gospel spilled outside the doors where the disciples were meeting. And when the man was healed at the Temple gate – everybody in Jerusalem knew about it.\nThe world at large wants good news. When the Lord is at work among His people\, the message is worth carrying outside. Indeed\, it is outside that a real impact is felt.\nSatan’s lies have for too long deceived men into thinking that the Lord denies us our greatest pleasures and desires.\nLet God begin to work and things start happening. Lives are changed\, sick are healed\, the downcast uplifted and joy enters the heart. If everybody living around you does not know\, is it because nothing is happening or because you are not telling them?

SUMMARY:"we will keep looking to you\, O Lord our God" [Psalm 123:2(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“we will keep looking to you\, O Lord our God”. In the Old Testament we read that “they looked unto Him and their faces were enlightened”. In the New Testament we are exhorted to live looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.\nPeter made the mistake of looking away from the Lord to the waves upon which he was walking. He learned that you sink beneath what you fix your eye upon unless it be the Lord. Your spiritual life depends upon sight of Jesus. Even through the gloom of doubt that sometimes enshrouds us or the depths of sorrow that envelop us we should make out the Person of the Lord. That is what faith does – it sees the Lord at all times.\nMake firm your resolve to keep looking to the Lord today.

SUMMARY:"speak the word only" [Matthew 8:8]
DESCRIPTION:“speak the word only”. The centurion must have recognised the authority that resided in Jesus and consequently he knew the power that was in His word.\nJesus spoke with authority – “even the demons obey Him” was the sentiment expressed on one occasion. When He halted the funeral procession as it left Nain no wonder the dead son was raised to life at the word of Jesus – or Lazarus stood to his feet and came out of the tomb\, or Jairus’ daughter was woken from her sleep of death at the sound of His voice.\nToday it is His word that needs to be heard. More important than what we think is what He says. Our part must be to hear His voice and obey His word. This is what the centurion did and we all know the result.

SUMMARY:"Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters" [Hebrews 13:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters”. God’s family on earth will differ on many interpretations because none has all the answers and some things must wait till glory before their purpose is plain.\nEveryone in the family is adopted by the grace of God. All are blood-bought by that sacrifice of the life of Jesus on the cross at Golgotha. To all the promises of God are “amen” and “yes” in Christ. God’s care and love by the ministry of the Spirit extends to all.\nRealise the relationship that exists between Christ and your brothers and sisters and you can love them as you love Christ.\nIf you don’t love your brother whom you have seen\, how can you love Christ whom you have not seen?

SUMMARY:"do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live" [Deuteronomy 4:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live”. If this injunction was needed for the Israelite in the Old Testament\, it is certainly needed by the follower of Jesus today.\nJesus described His followers as fools and slow of heart more than once and chided them for forgetting what He had taught them and their experiences with Him in the past.\nThe only sure way to not let the lessons of the past slip is to rehearse them and thank the Lord for them.\nIf you’re for ever praising Him for bringing you thus far\, you’ll be convinced of His power to keep you and your trust in Him will be firm and sure. Enjoy the blessings of the past and with expectancy look to an even more blessed future. Rejoice in the Lord always.

SUMMARY:"now he commands all men everywhere to repent" [Acts 17:30(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“now he commands all men everywhere to repent”. We are so lethargic that God needs do more than provide a way of escape\, He must command us to take it! This he does and commands all men everywhere to repent; to turn from their evil ways and look to the Lord. We must behave responsibly with the life He has given us. It is to us that God is speaking today and it is our lives that carry responsibility.\nWe need to repent if we would be free from the failure and purposeless existence outside Christ. God offers eternal life – beginning now – to those who will repent. He has provided a way of salvation whereby whoever will may be saved from the consequences of sin. God has appointed a day when He will judge the world in righteousness. Man must stop\, assess his position\, turn to God in repentance if he will be saved at last.

SUMMARY:"The midwives … let the boys live" [Exodus 1:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The midwives … let the boys live”. The Hebrew midwives\, Shiphrah and Puah\, feared God and recognised that the command of Pharaoh to kill all baby boys born to the Israelites was evil.\nThey did not do as the king commanded\, but found a way round the dilemma. They encouraged the Hebrew mothers to have their babies before they arrived\, or delayed their arrival until after the delivery! The important thing was that they let the boys live and later thousands of the young Hebrew men who left Egypt for the Promised Land owed their lives to these two brave and resourceful women.\nIn every generation there have been those despots who sought to thwart the plan of God. But the Lord has had His servants who have recognised the evil intended. We can thank God for all who take their stand against evil men.

SUMMARY:"Even the dogs eat the crumbs" [Matthew 15:27(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Even the dogs eat the crumbs”. Here was a lady who accepted her position but was not afraid to ask. Jesus’ ministry was primarily amongst the Jews\, so Gentiles\, like this woman\, were ‘outsiders’.\nBy emphasising this fact\, Jesus not only gives the woman an opportunity to express her faith but also gives Himself\, the Christ\, the opportunity to demonstrate His love for all. The woman is happy for ‘crumbs’ from Jesus knowing that ‘crumbs’ will be enough for the needs of her daughter.\nAn experience of Jesus in your life and mine is not dependent on being one of the ‘in’ crowd or having religious pedigree. It’s simply dependent on the mercy of Christ and our boldness to come to Him in faith.

SUMMARY:"Wait\, my daughter\, until you find out what happens" [Ruth 3:18(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Wait\, my daughter\, until you find out what happens”. Other translations say “Sit still” – the most difficult thing to do when you’re excited and wanting to get things moving. But it was sound advice that Naomi gave to her daughter-in-law.\nIt was almost too good to be true that the nobleman Boaz would take this refugee Moabitess to be his wife. Yet if God was in it\, there was no problem.\nGod’s plan is exciting for your life if you will surrender it to Him. It is often something that unfolds a little at a time as in the love match between Ruth and Boaz.\nThere is no need to rush ahead: sometimes you do better to sit still and see just what is happening. As your life is in His hand\, you will see it happen all in good time.

SUMMARY:"those who are … unstable twist" [II Peter 3:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“those who are … unstable twist”. The Apostle Peter refers to things in Paul’s Epistles which are hard to understand. These references were not made in any derogatory manner but as a warning to those who twist Scriptures for their own use.\nThe danger is that when we find something we do not like in the Bible we turn it around to mean something that better suits our thinking or conforms to some special revelation we think we have. Our great need is for the Holy Spirit to illumine those things we find difficult to understand. Rather than make the hard verse fit into what you already believe\, why not ask the Holy Spirit to reveal some new blessing He has for you from the Word of God today?\nWhatever you do\, don’t change the meaning – twisting Scripture is only done to the destruction of the soul.

SUMMARY:"he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord" [Isaiah 37:14(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord”. Hezekiah’s example is a good one to follow. He was a godly king and used to praying to the Lord and when Sennacherib\, King of Assyria sent a threatening and frightening letter to say he was about to attack\, it is not surprising to find that Hezekiah turned to the Lord.\nNote that he laid the letter before the Lord. The Lord knew all about it\, but by doing this Hezekiah was able to lay his concern before the Lord.\nDon’t hesitate to tell the Lord everything that is in your heart. Go into detail even though you realise God knows all about the matter. The Lord delights to share the needs of His children and He may allow us to be apprehensive because it makes us plead the case before Him.

SUMMARY:"Blessed is every one who fears the Lord" [Psalm 128:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed is every one who fears the Lord”. “Everyone blessed” is a sweeping statement\, but it is true. Whoever places the God of the whole earth in His rightful place must know blessing. To expect enduring blessing without Him is folly.\nExalt Him: Extol His mighty Name in your heart\, experience Him in your life and blessing will be yours. Seek His face\, hear His voice\, desire to do His will and untold blessing will flow. Hardship and difficulty may continue: sorrow and turmoil cross your path\, but the blessing that flows from His Presence within will carry you through all that life brings.\nYou will have an anointing from above that will carry you forward in His will and make you see fruit for His glory. It is blessing indeed to all who fear the Lord.

SUMMARY:"narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life" [Matthew 7:14(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life”. A man must humble himself if he would enter the gate.\nOnce sin is confessed and forgiven and Jesus is in His rightful place as Lord\, there can be no sitting back at ease. All hell may be loosed to get the Child of God back into the devil’s camp again. Add to this the fact that the Christian life is an upward climb all the way and you will see that “difficult” is no overstatement. Yet neither the narrowness of the gate nor the difficulty of the way need deter the one who would attain life.\nThe gate is not too narrow for the Holy Spirit to lead you through it\, neither is the way so difficult that the strength of the Lord cannot sustain you in it. Whoever will may come. Those who come He does not turn away. Once on the way\, eternal life is yours in Christ.

SUMMARY:"children of the promise" [Romans 9:8(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“children of the promise”. This is what we have become through faith in Jesus Christ. God promised Abraham that “through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed.”\nIn and through the work of Christ\, the blessing is now available to all. In Christ we have become children of God and now share in the eternal promises given to Abraham.\nThis is not for a worldly inheritance that will fade and perish but for a place in the new heaven and earth. It’s a promise that still stands and is secure in Christ. It will be fulfilled when Jesus comes again.\nUntil then\, let us be sure to live as ‘children of the promise.’
