When worship becomes eating\, drinking and playing it becomes idolatry. True worship is both happy and deeply satisfying\, but it is not hilarity or play.\nGod was graciously real to the Children of Israel and worked miraculously on their behalf bringing them out of the bondage of Egypt. Yet when Moses ascended Mount Sinai to receive the Law\, the Israelites turned to idolatry in a way one could hardly imagine. And they made the worship of an idol made from their earrings a most festive occasion.\nTheir behaviour reminds us that happiness and a good time are not enough. What is important is whether our conduct pleases the Lord.

We begin a new project but it dies on us; nothing we can do will revive it – we take it up\, but it’s dead. What was going so well we now have to say is as good as dead. This can be the experience of any one of us.\nWas it negligence on Eutychus’ part that he was asleep and fell? Should those responsible for the seating have moved him away from the window? But what use an enquiry when we think he’s dead? Thank God the miracle of resuscitation took place as Paul embraced him. And in God’s providence what you think has died on you can come alive and you can start praising again today.

Those listed in this great faith chapter knew about it and so do those who have exercised faith in the promise of God.\nThere is an unseen hand guiding the affairs of history. More important is God working unseen through Christ and bestowing His gift of eternal life on those who have the assurance of sin forgiven\, peace with God and a home in heaven.\nThe seeing is done by the eye of faith. The reality of it has sent the disciples of Jesus proclaiming the gospel message far and wide.\nThe day cannot be far away when faith’s eye becomes heavenly sight and we see Jesus face to face.

But they were to learn it was not then up to Jesus: their healing was as much up to them.\nJesus asked if they believed He was able to restore their sight. They said they did. Jesus then touched their eyes and gave them opportunity to demonstrate their faith. He made it clear to them that it was their faith that unlocked His mighty power.\nThings have not changed. We need faith to triumph in Christ and it is our faith that overcomes the pull of the world. God’s mighty power is available in our lives today. But we need to connect up with the divine supply – it is according to our faith the Lord works.

Our verse lists rocks becoming pools of water and cliffs flowing springs\, no doubt alluding to water flowing from the rock when Israel journeyed through the wilderness. One cannot imagine any two more opposites than flint stone and running water.\nThe Children of Israel’s journeyings through the desert to the Promised Land are a picture of the disciple’s pilgrimage through this world. In our journeyings we come against rock-like obstacles. Our prayer often seems directed towards the moving of mountains.\nBut the God of Jacob has not changed. He provides for His children\, often waiting until their cry is urgent and the opportunity one that displays His mighty power – even turning a forbidding rock into a refreshing pool.

They had caught something of the power and authority that Jesus was known to have – something of Him had rubbed off on them.\nThose who attempt to live up to the demands of the gospel without having met with the Lord are lifeless by comparison. Jesus shone out in all that Peter and John said and did.\nThere was no need to debate whether Jesus was alive. All that was needed was to look at the disciples. Their prosecutors may have liked to think that they only met Him before He was crucified. But the events surrounding the healing of the crippled man pointed to Jesus living in these men by the Holy Spirit. So\, today\, it is meeting with Jesus that makes all the difference.

The Lord leading and protecting His people for 40 years in the desert did not absolve them from responsibility\, neither was God’s care any excuse for them to be careless.\nThe Israelite’s experience was not unique. We who claim to be disciples need to take heed these many years later. A Bible full of promises that the Israelites never knew and a Holy Spirit sent by the Father to fill and guide all who seek Him still does not diminish the need for care.\nIf the spiritual plane onto which we are lifted in Christ is higher than anything found in the Old Testament\, we have further to fall and need to take more care than ever.\nThe care alluded to is that of making the Lord our God and allowing no other to be the object of our worship and adoration.

If\, like Elijah\, your prayer is to shut up the heavens and then open them again\, you must know what you are about and then exercise implicit faith that the Lord both hears and answers prayer.\nWhen you’re clear it’s salvation you want you take a hold of yourself and cry “Lord save me”. When it’s help\, enlightenment\, or any divine undertaking and you recognise your need\, you can pray believing and see God answer.

DESCRIPTION:“salvation has come to this house”.  We are not told what happened other than Jesus stayed there with Zacchaeus. He was a seeking soul and it is therefore not surprising that he found salvation in this Friend of Sinners.\nThat Jesus included “this house” suggests that the others in the family trusted Christ\, too. They recognised they were lost and trusted Jesus to save them. For them\, receiving Christ meant looking forward by faith to the salvation soon to be effected on the cross.\nThis salvation experience did not evaporate when Jesus left. It was not an imagination but a blessed experience soon to be experienced by many. Start praying and keep praying that for your whole household.

A “sit-down” should only be for a short rest. Relaxed and restful is not advancing you on the path God has ordained for you to walk.\nSome sit down and never get up again – they stay so long they lose all desire. Some wait for others to join them or for the moving of waters that never takes place. Many are content with a limited blessing and see no need to advance further.\nLet us be up and going when we are told to move forward.

Any who think that such treasure can be found without application must surely be mistaken and we might add that “growing in grace” does involve sitting at the feet of the Master and learning of Him.\nBeing still\, putting other matters out of mind\, avoiding interruption\, training the mind to listen and to pray are some of the qualities that are in our own power to develop in readiness for heavenly wisdom that the Lord would give us and which brings true peace and contentment.

That is the great joy of following Jesus – becoming a fisher of men\, pulling them out of sin’s mire.\nIt makes it all so sad when you meet those who did witness\, but now keep quiet. Don’t emulate them.

Fear will be fuelled by the devil: trust is built on faith and these are gifts of God.\nJoshua was fearful and discouraged by past failure and defeat at the battle of Ai. But the sins of Achan had been dealt with. Whatever the mistakes and failings of your past\, if dealt with by confession and the cleansing of the blood of Jesus\, you need have no fear. When fear is done away the cause for discouragement disappears too. Look to the Lord to give you this victory today.

These words are taken from the Apostle Paul’s sermon on Mars Hill Athens\, after he had seen the altar they had erected “to the Unknown God.” He told of the true God’s dealings with men in time past. Now\, since Jesus came\, God is looking for those who will repent and turn from their evil and superstitious ways.\nThis is the first step to receiving the gospel\, believing in Christ and being saved. It is like a right-about turn. It calls for renouncing the wrong and it can attract ridicule and opposition from those who will not turn themselves. By very nature it is a definite act and it is the important step in the right direction.\nWithout it\, the would-be Christian is walking backwards.

DESCRIPTION:“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down”.  The faith was in the hearts of Joshua and the Children of Israel who marched around the city day after day for a whole week. They encompassed the city seven times the seventh day\, blew their trumpets and shouted with a great shout. Not an arrow was fired: no swords clashed. Whoever heard of a great city captured in this way? It was contrary to reason. But God had spoken and His followers believed and implicitly enacted what He said. Walls still fall flat when God’s children obey His voice and let faith triumph over reason – walls of indifference\, opposition\, ungodliness. The devil may have spent years erecting and fortifying but the deliverance of faith can fell them in a moment.

DESCRIPTION:“Who has determined the course of history? “.  God determined history and carried it out. Sending His Son into our world He fulfilled Old Testament prophecy.\nThe Incarnation\, when God took upon Himself our likeness in the Person of His Only Son\, altered the course of history for all time. Men no longer look forward to a promised deliverer but back to a Saviour and Redeemer.\nThe direction of all things was changed when Christ died for our sins. No longer in decline\, those who come to Him can know that ascendancy that only the Spirit can give.\nJesus ascended back to heaven but ministers in countless lives of His followers by the work of the Spirit – directing and determining the course of history!

When we think of some of the things we hoped for we wonder where our sense was.\nHope can fade – in later years it generally does: to see it fade in a younger person is sadness indeed.\nHopes are sometimes dashed – usually bringing a period of remorse from which we sometimes despair of ever emerging.\nThose who do what is right shall know a hope that brings gladness – even though it is at times eclipsed by present sorrow and stress.\nThose who do what is right turn to God for wisdom and guidance: recognising their own inadequacy and weakness they make the Lord their strength.

Life is as valued by the beggar as it is the prince\, though in vastly contrasting ways.\nThe world is valuable but in real terms only if you can enjoy and benefit from it. If you have to barter your life to gain the world it is a loss whichever way you look at it. Without the hope of eternal life offered to us in Christ\, mortal life at best is all too short -for many holding hardship and suffering.\nIn spite of this\, many spend their years chasing the bubble of this world’s pleasure\, or hollow acclaim of its glory.\nBring divine reckoning into the equation of life. Consider the eternal life in Jesus Christ. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct your thinking. Those who realise the truth and reject it must have the greater condemnation.

Death has no more hold upon Him.\nJesus is the Mighty Conqueror and His followers can triumph in the life He gives. Not born again to the same old life and routine\, but born of the Spirit to love and serve the Lord.\nYou “live also” is in the resurrection life of Jesus. The life of the believer is guaranteed by a living Lord.

DESCRIPTION:“my flesh shall rest in hope”.  Naturally speaking my body\, or my flesh is slowly dying. I am trying to get done all I can before my last breath heralds an enforced rest.  But he whose hope is in the Lord knows One who rose again triumphant from the grave: mightily and victoriously overcoming the last enemy which is death.\nThe New Testament describes the soul of the believer as “asleep in Jesus” when at rest in the grave. The hope of the resurrection burns on. Their resting is only until the number of the redeemed is complete.\nBecause Jesus lives His followers will live also – in perfect bliss and fulfilment of eternal life. It is decreed I must lay down my sword\, but let it be known that when I do so\, I rest in hope of the glory of God.

He created all things and upholds them.\nHis storehouse holds more than Joseph’s in Egypt\, His wisdom far exceeds that of Solomon and His patience that of Job. There is no doubt He owns everything: no need we have He is unable to meet.\nMore than that He can supply\, the blessing of the short message in today’s verse is that He will supply. There need be no delay\, no hold-up\, no blockage or breakdown in communication.\nGod’s supply will reach you and your life will achieve the purpose He has for you and one day you will see the full extent of His blessing for you.

DESCRIPTION:“why has all this happened to us? “.  This was Gideon’s question when the angel told him that the Lord was with him. He wanted to know why he needed to thresh his wheat in the winepress because of the invading Midianites. He asked where all the wonders he heard about had gone: why had the Lord abandoned the nation of Israel?\n“Why has all this happened?” is a question often heard today and it is one that is best answered from the Word of God where we find God’s purpose in the affairs of men.\nWe cannot expect an answer to all our questions\, but when we recognise that God is at work and that His purposes are for our good and that a day is coming when the obscure things will be made plain\, we have confidence that all things are working for the good of those who love Him.

DESCRIPTION:“knowing what had happened to her”.  Just as the Lord knew that power had gone out from Him\, so this lady knew that power had rushed into her and she knew that she had been healed. There was no need for the doctors to examine her\, no need to get a certificate of health. ‘She felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.’ She was unnoticed\, except by Jesus\, but not unaware that something had happened. Knowing this for herself\, she is helped to make it known to others. When the Lord touches our lives\, we’ll know about it. The Holy Spirit will confirm with our spirit that He is at work. However recent the touch of the Lord has been in your life\, there’s no better time than now to share it with others and have your faith affirmed.

On the other hand\, many of those dwarf bushes we see all around would have become like cedars of Lebanon with God’s blessing if we had sincerely sought it.\nToo many Christians make prayer like the counter in a repair shop – the place where all the spiritual breakages are taken.\nNo matter how convinced about its success you are\, take every plan to the Lord for His approval BEFORE it leaves the drawing board.

DESCRIPTION:“how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God”.  This is because you can’t trust your riches and trust the Lord. You should know that to trust riches is failure in the long run\, but most ignore this. The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil. There must be a willingness to forego this world’s riches to find Christ.  Until this is done you may be like the merchant with many pearls but as yet without the pearl of great price. So the difficulty for many intelligent\, educated and experienced people\, is not to adapt to the narrow way described by Jesus. It is to let slip the gaudy glitter of this world’s treasure.\nBut the choice is there. Hang on to this world as long as you can\, yet you will lose it someday. Take Christ and you will receive eternal life.
