SUMMARY:"Who has determined the course of history? " [Isaiah 41:4(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Who has determined the course of history? “. God determined history and carried it out. Sending His Son into our world He fulfilled Old Testament prophecy.\nThe Incarnation\, when God took upon Himself our likeness in the Person of His Only Son\, altered the course of history for all time. Men no longer look forward to a promised deliverer but back to a Saviour and Redeemer.\nThe direction of all things was changed when Christ died for our sins. No longer in decline\, those who come to Him can know that ascendancy that only the Spirit can give.\nJesus ascended back to heaven but ministers in countless lives of His followers by the work of the Spirit – directing and determining the course of history!

SUMMARY:"The hope of the righteous shall be gladness" [Proverbs 10:28]
DESCRIPTION:“The hope of the righteous shall be gladness”. Hopes and aspirations can change quite considerably as life goes on. When we think of some of the things we hoped for we wonder where our sense was.\nHope can fade – in later years it generally does: to see it fade in a younger person is sadness indeed.\nHopes are sometimes dashed – usually bringing a period of remorse from which we sometimes despair of ever emerging.\nThose who do what is right shall know a hope that brings gladness – even though it is at times eclipsed by present sorrow and stress.\nThose who do what is right turn to God for wisdom and guidance: recognising their own inadequacy and weakness they make the Lord their strength.

SUMMARY:"Does a person gain anything if he wins the whole world but loses his life? " [Mark 8:36(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Does a person gain anything if he wins the whole world but loses his life? “. Life is as valued by the beggar as it is the prince\, though in vastly contrasting ways.\nThe world is valuable but in real terms only if you can enjoy and benefit from it. If you have to barter your life to gain the world it is a loss whichever way you look at it. Without the hope of eternal life offered to us in Christ\, mortal life at best is all too short -for many holding hardship and suffering.\nIn spite of this\, many spend their years chasing the bubble of this world’s pleasure\, or hollow acclaim of its glory.\nBring divine reckoning into the equation of life. Consider the eternal life in Jesus Christ. Allow the Holy Spirit to direct your thinking. Those who realise the truth and reject it must have the greater condemnation.

SUMMARY:"Because I live\, you will live also" [John 14:19(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Because I live\, you will live also”. The truth that Jesus is alive infuses life into every one of His followers.\nThe day of His resurrection poured a flood of light on those dark days at Calvary. He died to save us\, He lives to intercede for us. We can expect and experience new life in Christ because Jesus is alive. Death has no more hold upon Him.\nJesus is the Mighty Conqueror and His followers can triumph in the life He gives. Not born again to the same old life and routine\, but born of the Spirit to love and serve the Lord.\nYou “live also” is in the resurrection life of Jesus. The life of the believer is guaranteed by a living Lord.

SUMMARY:"my flesh shall rest in hope" [Acts 2:26]
DESCRIPTION:“my flesh shall rest in hope”. Naturally speaking my body\, or my flesh is slowly dying. I am trying to get done all I can before my last breath heralds an enforced rest. But he whose hope is in the Lord knows One who rose again triumphant from the grave: mightily and victoriously overcoming the last enemy which is death.\nThe New Testament describes the soul of the believer as “asleep in Jesus” when at rest in the grave. The hope of the resurrection burns on. Their resting is only until the number of the redeemed is complete.\nBecause Jesus lives His followers will live also – in perfect bliss and fulfilment of eternal life. It is decreed I must lay down my sword\, but let it be known that when I do so\, I rest in hope of the glory of God.

SUMMARY:"my God shall supply" [Philippians 4:19]
DESCRIPTION:“my God shall supply”. We know all the riches of heaven are His. Scripture tells us that He owns the cattle on a thousand hills and the wealth of every mine. He created all things and upholds them.\nHis storehouse holds more than Joseph’s in Egypt\, His wisdom far exceeds that of Solomon and His patience that of Job. There is no doubt He owns everything: no need we have He is unable to meet.\nMore than that He can supply\, the blessing of the short message in today’s verse is that He will supply. There need be no delay\, no hold-up\, no blockage or breakdown in communication.\nGod’s supply will reach you and your life will achieve the purpose He has for you and one day you will see the full extent of His blessing for you.

SUMMARY:"why has all this happened to us? " [Judges 6:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“why has all this happened to us? “. This was Gideon’s question when the angel told him that the Lord was with him. He wanted to know why he needed to thresh his wheat in the winepress because of the invading Midianites. He asked where all the wonders he heard about had gone: why had the Lord abandoned the nation of Israel?\n“Why has all this happened?” is a question often heard today and it is one that is best answered from the Word of God where we find God’s purpose in the affairs of men.\nWe cannot expect an answer to all our questions\, but when we recognise that God is at work and that His purposes are for our good and that a day is coming when the obscure things will be made plain\, we have confidence that all things are working for the good of those who love Him.

SUMMARY:"knowing what had happened to her" [Mark 5:33 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“knowing what had happened to her”. Just as the Lord knew that power had gone out from Him\, so this lady knew that power had rushed into her and she knew that she had been healed. There was no need for the doctors to examine her\, no need to get a certificate of health. ‘She felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.’ She was unnoticed\, except by Jesus\, but not unaware that something had happened. Knowing this for herself\, she is helped to make it known to others. When the Lord touches our lives\, we’ll know about it. The Holy Spirit will confirm with our spirit that He is at work. However recent the touch of the Lord has been in your life\, there’s no better time than now to share it with others and have your faith affirmed.

SUMMARY:"Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed" [Proverbs 16:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Commit to the Lord whatever you do and your plans will succeed”. Might we have some surprises if we did this?\nWould many fiascos in which we engage have been nipped in the bud\, if we had carefully sought the Lord’s counsel before embarking upon them? On the other hand\, many of those dwarf bushes we see all around would have become like cedars of Lebanon with God’s blessing if we had sincerely sought it.\nToo many Christians make prayer like the counter in a repair shop – the place where all the spiritual breakages are taken.\nNo matter how convinced about its success you are\, take every plan to the Lord for His approval BEFORE it leaves the drawing board.

SUMMARY:"how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God" [Mark 10:24]
DESCRIPTION:“how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom of God”. This is because you can’t trust your riches and trust the Lord. You should know that to trust riches is failure in the long run\, but most ignore this. The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil. There must be a willingness to forego this world’s riches to find Christ. Until this is done you may be like the merchant with many pearls but as yet without the pearl of great price. So the difficulty for many intelligent\, educated and experienced people\, is not to adapt to the narrow way described by Jesus. It is to let slip the gaudy glitter of this world’s treasure.\nBut the choice is there. Hang on to this world as long as you can\, yet you will lose it someday. Take Christ and you will receive eternal life.

SUMMARY:"the books were opened" [Revelation 20:12]
DESCRIPTION:“the books were opened”. God keeps a record and we can be sure that His record is accurate and complete. His judgment will be final\, for He is Sovereign.\nThat we get so far into the book of the Revelation before the books were opened could mean that there were those who thought they would never be opened – as many do today. Yet this verse shows us that it is not just a record to be used if needed.\nJohn saw the dead\, small and great\, stand before God. They were judged according to what they had done. The book specially featured in his vision is the book of life – the volume Jesus talked about\, telling us that to have our names written there is the greatest cause for rejoicing. To those who receive Him there is no condemnation.

SUMMARY:"Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul" [Acts 11:25(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Barnabas departed for Tarsus to seek Saul”. You couldn’t have found a kinder man. He was both a source of consolation\, as his name means\, and an encouragement. Saul owes his being launched into his mission to the Gentiles to Barnabas because he came and sought him out for the task.\nLess gentle brethren\, even Saul (later Paul) found it hard to go along with this loving\, forgiving brother. But Barnabas persisted in his gracious approach and it was seen to bring others back to line who had wandered astray – notably John Mark whom Paul later acknowledged to be a valued brother.\nBarnabas was a man of foresight. He could see what was needed and could pick the man who would meet that need. Hence his journey to fetch Saul.\nWe need more like Barnabas today.

SUMMARY:"Yet I will rejoice in the Lord" [Habakkuk 3:18]
DESCRIPTION:“Yet I will rejoice in the Lord”. Our situations and circumstances will change. Things happen that we have little\, if any\, control over which can deeply affect us. Like Israel\, facing imminent captivity\, life may look very bleak at times\, but our circumstances must not prevent us from rejoicing in the Lord. He is still our God and Saviour. Is our praise of Him dependent on things going well for us? Should we not praise Him for who He is? We may prefer good times to bad\, but the Israelites became complacent during the years of plenty and forgot the Lord their God. The Lord knows that through hard times our experience of Him can be so much deeper. Praising God when life hurts produces a blessing that cannot be had when life is easy. Try it today and let the Holy Spirit lift you up.

SUMMARY:"if we neglect" [Hebrews 2:3]
DESCRIPTION:p>“if we neglect”. It is the easiest thing to do because it is doing nothing. Conscientious people do not easily succumb to it\, though the pressures of modern life can cause them to fail on this point.\nThe neglect that the writer is referring to happens when men and women do not seek the Lord and or familiarise themselves with what He is saying and asking them to do.\nThe Bible makes it clear that there is no escaping the judgment that awaits those who neglect God’s salvation. It is rather like ignoring the life raft when the call has been given to abandon the sinking ship.\nNeglect relates to the step of trusting Christ for salvation\, and that of obedience to His voice day by day.\nLet it be that knowing the consequences ensures we do not make this mistake.

SUMMARY:"your work of faith" [I Thessalonians 1:3]
DESCRIPTION:“your work of faith”. Faith is much more than a vague wish. Faith leads to action that produces results. But it’s not about how much faith we have but rather who our faith is in. As someone once said\, “It’s not whether you have great faith in God but that you have faith in a great God.” Many today put their faith in other men\, in science or technology. But all these will let us down\, however much faith is put into them. But the ‘mustard seed’ of faith in Christ\, can achieve a work for God that will last into eternity.\nFaith is encouraged as it is applied and is rewarded as it is demonstrated. All who came in faith to Jesus\, however tentative\, received the assurance that their faith had brought healing and salvation.

SUMMARY:"Lord\, you have been our dwelling-place in all generations" [Psalm 90:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Lord\, you have been our dwelling-place in all generations”. Many generations have crossed the stage of time since the Psalmist uttered these words. Not one has found them to be untrue. Customs and habits\, behaviour and dress change but God is there. Ever the same; true to His word: reaching out toward us when we seek to pass by.\nWe should draw upon the silent testimony of those who have gone before. Making mistakes as we do\, having their doubts and fears\, surrounded by evil and temptation\, they would all give testimony to the truth written that God is there.\nWe need to turn aside as Moses did when confronted with the burning bush or fall to the ground as Saul did on the Damascus Road and see that God is calling us to the safety of faith and trust in Him.

SUMMARY:"Watch … and pray" [Mark 14:38]
DESCRIPTION:“Watch … and pray”. The three disciples had opportunity to witness the greatest drama of all time as Jesus wrestled in prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane\, but they fell asleep. One of the greatest conflicts known took place in that Garden\, but it mattered little to them for they slept through it.\nJesus wanted them to see His agony and to support Him with prayer. He felt\, as we do when faced with a crisis\, the need to know others are standing with us in prayer. To pray intelligently and directly there must be an awareness of what is going on and some idea about the reason for it. Fervent prayer needs stimulation.\nThe disciples’ signal failure on this occasion caused Jesus to issue this exhortation to watch and pray. It is recorded for us all: let us seek to heed it.

SUMMARY:"whatever my God says\, that I will speak" [II Chronicles 18:13(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“whatever my God says\, that I will speak”. The first thing to note is that Micaiah was in touch with God. He received guidance\, counsel and instruction to pass onto others.\nThe second thing is that Micaiah conveyed what he heard faithfully and fearlessly\, even though his was a lone voice in the world of prophesying what was to happen. Error creeps in when God’s servants do not fully convey the truth entrusted to them. Watering down the milk of the Word makes for weak Christians.\nDoing what God told him was more important to Micaiah than giving his hearers what they wanted.\nThe church needs and the world admires steadfast disciples who refuse to be moved from the truth of their convictions.

SUMMARY:"Give us day by day our daily bread" [Luke 11:3]
DESCRIPTION:“Give us day by day our daily bread”. Asking for one’s daily bread assumes that one is dependent upon God for it. The labourer may toil to gather the harvest\, but it is with strength the Lord gives\, he does so and it is God’s law of nature he is harnessing. Requesting daily bread in this way demands that we acknowledge it is not ours by right. It is likely that a shortage of it conveys a greater appreciation of it and those who cry most earnestly for it must draw nearer to God as a result. We can neither presume to be given the day nor the bread to sustain us in it.\nBread refers to the basis of any staple diet – it can be rice in some areas. And when millions undernourished are praying this prayer\, those who have enough and to spare should not be surprised if an instruction comes to share it with their brother.

SUMMARY:"The things which God has prepared for those who love him" [I Corinthians 2:9(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The things which God has prepared for those who love him”. Many biographies have been written about men and women who have devoted themselves to Christ and given their lives in His Service. But no volume\, or library of volumes\, could describe the preparation God has made for those who respond to His love in Christ.\nNot only have the details of the preparation been kept secret\, but the heart of man could not comprehend them if they were published. It is only when mortality puts on immortality and our comprehension expands into eternity that we shall appreciate what the Lord has done.\nYet the Holy Spirit reveals the things of God to us. They may be impossible to describe\, words defy translation\, but exultation in the Spirit is a foretaste of heaven.

SUMMARY:"Deal courageously\, and the Lord shall be with the good" [II Chronicles 19:11]
DESCRIPTION:“Deal courageously\, and the Lord shall be with the good”. This was Jehoshaphat’s advice to the judges of the people. It is counsel that stands for all who have to settle disputes today. Courage to do what is right and to uphold the truth is never wasted. But to act honourably at all times calls for courage of a high order. It can be no easy path.\nBut today’s verse contains a glorious promise – the Lord is with those who ‘deal courageously’. The corollary is that those who decide for the easy option can lose the presence of the Lord. Certainly\, they may miss the Lord standing by them when all seems against them: they never tread the fiery furnace nor stand in the den of lions.\nTo experience the presence of the Lord with you today may call for courageous dealing on your part.

SUMMARY:"like a tree planted by the water" [Jeremiah 17:8(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“like a tree planted by the water”. This is a description of the person who trusts in the Lord. This tree is not burned by the heat or withered by drought. The water supply is always there and the green leaves indicate a fruitful tree. So it can be for all whose trust is in the Lord. Jesus is the One who can give the very water of life that is a spring welling up within. It cannot be quenched by situations or circumstances. It’s a supply that the world cannot stop. This tree ‘sends out its roots by the stream’. How we need to root ourselves in Christ Jesus. However much we drink of the water He offers\, there will always be more. Whether we are going through some fiery trial or a time of feeling dry and alone\, let the Holy Spirit refresh you so that you can bear fruit to His glory.

SUMMARY:"Euodias\, and … Syntyche" [Philippians 4:2]
DESCRIPTION:“Euodias\, and … Syntyche”. Two respected and influential ladies in the church in Philippi. Talented and with much to give\, they had apparently clashed over a certain issue and what should have been a combined ministry of care and hospitality for the saints became a running conflict and divided the assembly.\nThings like this happen today; both parties are convinced they are right. Yet a moment’s reflection should show that the Lord is not divided. His is one way\, and the Apostle Paul reminded these ladies that they had to find the mind of the Lord. Each should recognise they could be wrong. They had to start again and seek the mind of the Lord.\nIn everything on which there might be disagreement\, we do well to ask the Lord for His up-date on the matter.

SUMMARY:"Great are the works of the Lord" [Psalm 111:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Great are the works of the Lord”. Great because of their magnitude – His handiwork extends from the universe to beyond. There is no knowing how great the Lord is.\nGreat because He provides for you – there is not a need He cannot meet or a prayer He will not hear. He knows what is best for us. His care reaches to all of His creation.\nGreat because He gives you the gift of faith to appreciate and receive the greatest gift of eternal life through faith in Jesus. Those who seek and find feel they take the first step into the great work of the Lord. Great because they redeem and renew and revitalise your life into that new life in Christ.\nLet God’s grace and compassion enfold you today.

SUMMARY:"Michal loved David" [I Samuel 18:28(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Michal loved David”. Michal was Saul’s younger daughter and this must be counted as one of the outstanding love matches of the Old Testament.\nSaul really wanted to do away with David but two things stood in his way. First\, the obvious way the Lord was with David and secondly the genuine love that Michal had for him. Read in the next chapter how she saved David’s life\, letting him down through a window to escape the murderous designs of Saul her father.\nMichal’s part was small but significant. Her marriage to David was forged on the altar of true love and its aim was the glory of the Lord in the outworking of God’s purpose.\nHer love for David held when he had to flee\, her part was important in establishing David on the throne.

SUMMARY:"the wisdom of God … which none of the princes of this world knew" [I Corinthians 2:7\,8]
DESCRIPTION:“the wisdom of God … which none of the princes of this world knew”. The Apostle Paul is here arguing that it was because the leaders of the nation were unaware of the plan of God that they allowed Jesus to be crucified. The earthly wisdom of princes did not extend to the heavenly wisdom of God.\nWorld rulers may exercise dominion over millions of individuals yet they may be completely ignorant of the real meaning of life and the high spiritual calling there is in Christ.\nAn excellent position in this world’s aristocracy can be meaningless in reality. It is those who love God and who seek to do His will that can experience the Lord’s appointment.\nWe know that Jesus rejoiced in the knowledge that what was hidden from the wise is revealed to babes in Christ.

SUMMARY:"Peter followed him afar off" [Mark 14:54]
DESCRIPTION:“Peter followed him afar off”. No one was willing to identify with Jesus at this time. The crowds had turned tail and those that did not openly oppose Him became mute or stayed away. His disciples forsook Him and fled and though John obtained admission to the courtroom\, he contributed nothing to Jesus’ defence and merely arranged for Peter to be admitted as well. Peter had vowed that he would not deny His Lord and this may have kept him trailing along. Yet it was at what he felt to be a ‘safe distance’ – but still a target for a servant girl’s accusing finger.\nFollowing afar off contributed most to Peter’s denial of Jesus. In the highway of life the disciple must learn to keep the correct distance – as close as possible to Jesus!

SUMMARY:"Better … a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city" [Proverbs 16:32 (RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Better … a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city”. Lose your temper and we fear you cannot be trusted with anything.\nThe most wonderful and at the same time the most fearful thing you have is yourself.\nThis is why we need to place our emotions into the hand of the Lord. If Jesus is Lord\, then temper is no longer our immediate responsibility.\nWe know we’re safe if the temper will not flare up. Come with wise words and a peaceful manner and\, if we know that the storm of anger will not arise\, we can look forward to a good day.\nFor some\, controlling the temper is a huge undertaking\, but the Lord can deal with that if you commit it to Him.

SUMMARY:"What I have written I have written" [John 19:22]
DESCRIPTION:“What I have written I have written”. Pilate meant that the wording of the superscription above the cross of Jesus was not going to be changed. How little did he realise the import of his words!\nThe enemies of the cross\, urged on by the devil himself\, would have had these words removed. They would take down the cross\, seal the tomb and remove every remembrance of the crucifixion\, or relegate it to one of any number of martyrs.\nBut the message from the cross is not for changing. It is written on every page of history. It is as new today as it was when it took place – probably more so\, for its message is everywhere. And there is life for a look of faith. Christ died for us.

SUMMARY:"Put this fellow in the prison" [II Chronicles 18:26]
DESCRIPTION:“Put this fellow in the prison”. Micaiah the prophet was not the last man to be interned at the whim of a ruling despot. He did not prophesy favourably according to the king’s desire and lost his freedom as a result.\nBut putting Micaiah in prison did not silence the voice of truth\, or King Ahab’s conscience\, neither did it avert the pending judgment of God.\nBetter to have a good conscience in prison than an evil one outside. Micaiah’s bread and water of affliction was not pleasant but his refusal to compromise is to be emulated. In point of fact\, though in prison\, Micaiah was gloriously free. So are all who allow God to speak through them\, whether inside prison or out.
