DESCRIPTION:“Deal courageously\, and the Lord shall be with the good”.  This was Jehoshaphat’s advice to the judges of the people. It is counsel that stands for all who have to settle disputes today. Courage to do what is right and to uphold the truth is never wasted. But to act honourably at all times calls for courage of a high order. It can be no easy path.\nBut today’s verse contains a glorious promise – the Lord is with those who ‘deal courageously’. The corollary is that those who decide for the easy option can lose the presence of the Lord. Certainly\, they may miss the Lord standing by them when all seems against them: they never tread the fiery furnace nor stand in the den of lions.\nTo experience the presence of the Lord with you today may call for courageous dealing on your part.

DESCRIPTION:“like a tree planted by the water”.  This is a description of the person who trusts in the Lord. This tree is not burned by the heat or withered by drought. The water supply is always there and the green leaves indicate a fruitful tree. So it can be for all whose trust is in the Lord. Jesus is the One who can give the very water of life that is a spring welling up within. It cannot be quenched by situations or circumstances. It’s a supply that the world cannot stop. This tree ‘sends out its roots by the stream’. How we need to root ourselves in Christ Jesus. However much we drink of the water He offers\, there will always be more. Whether we are going through some fiery trial or a time of feeling dry and alone\, let the Holy Spirit refresh you so that you can bear fruit to His glory.

DESCRIPTION:“Euodias\, and … Syntyche”.  Two respected and influential ladies in the church in Philippi. Talented and with much to give\, they had apparently clashed over a certain issue and what should have been a combined ministry of care and hospitality for the saints became a running conflict and divided the assembly.\nThings like this happen today; both parties are convinced they are right. Yet a moment’s reflection should show that the Lord is not divided. His is one way\, and the Apostle Paul reminded these ladies that they had to find the mind of the Lord. Each should recognise they could be wrong. They had to start again and seek the mind of the Lord.\nIn everything on which there might be disagreement\, we do well to ask the Lord for His up-date on the matter.

DESCRIPTION:“Michal loved David”.  Michal was Saul’s younger daughter and this must be counted as one of the outstanding love matches of the Old Testament.\nSaul really wanted to do away with David but two things stood in his way. First\, the obvious way the Lord was with David and secondly the genuine love that Michal had for him. Read in the next chapter how she saved David’s life\, letting him down through a window to escape the murderous designs of Saul her father.\nMichal’s part was small but significant. Her marriage to David was forged on the altar of true love and its aim was the glory of the Lord in the outworking of God’s purpose.\nHer love for David held when he had to flee\, her part was important in establishing David on the throne.

The Apostle Paul is here arguing that it was because the leaders of the nation were unaware of the plan of God that they allowed Jesus to be crucified. The earthly wisdom of princes did not extend to the heavenly wisdom of God.\nWorld rulers may exercise dominion over millions of individuals yet they may be completely ignorant of the real meaning of life and the high spiritual calling there is in Christ.\nAn excellent position in this world’s aristocracy can be meaningless in reality. It is those who love God and who seek to do His will that can experience the Lord’s appointment.\nWe know that Jesus rejoiced in the knowledge that what was hidden from the wise is revealed to babes in Christ.

DESCRIPTION:“Peter followed him afar off”.  No one was willing to identify with Jesus at this time. The crowds had turned tail and those that did not openly oppose Him became mute or stayed away. His disciples forsook Him and fled and though John obtained admission to the courtroom\, he contributed nothing to Jesus’ defence and merely arranged for Peter to be admitted as well.  Peter had vowed that he would not deny His Lord and this may have kept him trailing along. Yet it was at what he felt to be a ‘safe distance’ – but still a target for a servant girl’s accusing finger.\nFollowing afar off contributed most to Peter’s denial of Jesus. In the highway of life the disciple must learn to keep the correct distance – as close as possible to Jesus!

If Jesus is Lord\, then temper is no longer our immediate responsibility.\nWe know we’re safe if the temper will not flare up. Come with wise words and a peaceful manner and\, if we know that the storm of anger will not arise\, we can look forward to a good day.\nFor some\, controlling the temper is a huge undertaking\, but the Lord can deal with that if you commit it to Him.

DESCRIPTION:“What I have written I have written”.  Pilate meant that the wording of the superscription above the cross of Jesus was not going to be changed. How little did he realise the import of his words!\nThe enemies of the cross\, urged on by the devil himself\, would have had these words removed. They would take down the cross\, seal the tomb and remove every remembrance of the crucifixion\, or relegate it to one of any number of martyrs.\nBut the message from the cross is not for changing. It is written on every page of history. It is as new today as it was when it took place – probably more so\, for its message is everywhere. And there is life for a look of faith. Christ died for us.

DESCRIPTION:“Put this fellow in the prison”.  Micaiah the prophet was not the last man to be interned at the whim of a ruling despot. He did not prophesy favourably according to the king’s desire and lost his freedom as a result.\nBut putting Micaiah in prison did not silence the voice of truth\, or King Ahab’s conscience\, neither did it avert the pending judgment of God.\nBetter to have a good conscience in prison than an evil one outside. Micaiah’s bread and water of affliction was not pleasant but his refusal to compromise is to be emulated. In point of fact\, though in prison\, Micaiah was gloriously free. So are all who allow God to speak through them\, whether inside prison or out.

This personification of our enemy can represent three kinds of trouble.\nThe lion coming at us with a bound: we can see him coming. And we can see many of our troubles coming.\nThe adder or cobra comes on us silently and unexpectedly until we hear the hiss and feel the bite – like the troubles that take us by surprise like a snake lurking in the long grass.\nThe dragon is more an imaginary creature. Always depicted to frighten us but really nothing real about it. So many troubles are the product of our imagination and never reach us at all: they are merely fear\, though we suffer at their hand. God’s promise is that in His Name we shall trample them all under foot.

Unexplored territory no longer exists – our resurrected Lord is in the vanguard of a great advance.\nWe need to identify our ‘Galilee’ – the place of service to which He has called us. Once this is done\, move forward into it\, for it is there we shall see Him.

Naaman and his entourage arrived at the King of Israel with the request for healing on the strength of a servant girl’s word taken captive from Israel some years earlier.\nThe king was completely at a loss what to do. He had the prophet Elisha in his midst but did not associate him with the request.\nGod’s servants today can be likened to Elisha then. The disease is not leprosy but it is just as lethal. Sin has brought trouble upon individuals\, communities and nations. Will the ‘Elisha’s’ stand forth and tell us that there is a prophet in Israel\, that God still cares and loves and meets the need of those who will call upon Him!\nThe answer is really quite simple – turn from your wicked ways to the Lord if you would find healing for the land.

This phrase found at the end of several psalms comes like the crash of symbols on the final beat of a great anthem.\nThe Psalmist has been picking his way through a harvest-field of blessings. Now he calls on everyone to praise the Lord – the angels\, mighty ones who do His bidding and who obey His word. He calls on all the heavenly hosts – myriads of stars or creatures of light in the heavenly realm.  All God’s works deserve God’s praise.\nWhen you cannot see His purpose right now you can have faith that all will be right in His good time. The true church is scattered but every member can look to that final display of its glory in the bride of Christ. The part\, albeit so small\, that must not be missing is the praise of your soul.

Later two others who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus repeated the news but the disciples did not believe.\nWhen Thomas was told that Jesus had appeared\, he thought the disciples were all hallucinated!\nThank God we don’t have to depend upon what someone else says. Though we may first hear through someone else\, we can check it out for ourselves.  The living Lord Jesus makes Himself known to those who seek Him.\nJesus is alive: the evidence stands examination and the experience of His presence is best of all.

The main thoroughfare running towards it and through it is the Way of Holiness.\nAll who have repented of their sin and seek to follow the Lord should know what it is to walk on it.\nIt is the death of Jesus as a sacrifice for sin that has made this way a reality. All the road signs on the way to Zion say\, “The Way of Holiness.”\nGod sets His servants apart. The blood of Jesus cleanses from sin and the ministry of the Holy Spirit keeps and protects the sanctified ones on their journey.\nYour way in life may seem uneventful to others but to you who love the Lord\, you’re stepping it out on heaven’s way.

You can reach the top by treading on other people – but the pinnacle is then for ever precarious.\nThe Lord has regard to the means. He rewards the trier as well as the one who succeeds. Righteousness exalts a nation and is required of the individual too. Some years ago\, a salesman left his job selling animal foodstuffs\, because to sell any of his product he needed to make false claims about it. He was out of work for a time before taking a less remunerative position. He found that the little he had was better than the lot more that weighed on his conscience.

DESCRIPTION:“why has all this happened to us? “.  This was Gideon’s question when the angel told him that the Lord was with him. He wanted to know why he needed to thresh his wheat in the winepress because of the invading Midianites. He asked where all the wonders he heard about had gone: why had the Lord abandoned the nation of Israel?\n“Why has all this happened?” is a question often heard today and it is one that is best answered from the Word of God where we find God’s purpose in the affairs of men.\nWe cannot expect an answer to all our questions\, but when we recognise that God is at work and that His purposes are for our good and that a day is coming when the obscure things will be made plain\, we have confidence that all things are working for the good of those who love Him.

There is the sparkling cup of worldly pleasure and the obsessive cup of worldly aim and achievement.\nWe need to put them all aside and realise that whatever our station in life\, the cup of God’s salvation is offered to us.\nIt is not awarded on merit or offered us according to our potential. It is the chalice of God’s free grace and favour.\nThe cup of salvation is God’s cup of blessing to us.

The same word is used to describe the earthquake that also happened when Christ died. The death of Jesus had a violent impact on man’s relationship with God. That which had separated ordinary man from Holy God was removed. Sin had been atoned for\, not with the blood of animals\, but with the blood of Christ. Not torn down\, but torn in two\, never again to hinder access to God. Now all can come to Him through Christ\, the new and living Way. Torn literally ‘from above to below’: not by man\, but by God. Our salvation is from above. Christ came from heaven to earth in order to redeem fallen man. Enjoy the reality of that living relationship with Almighty God.

DESCRIPTION:“walked along with them”.  In their sadness and despair\, the two disciples did not recognise Jesus walking along with them. They must have been pretty downcast to have the best travelling companion and the best Bible study ever\, yet not appreciate either! But Jesus stayed with them.\nHe walked along with them\, at their pace and in the same direction. They may have been dispirited but at least they kept walking! We may not always notice when Jesus is around\, but that doesn’t mean He is not there. We may not always take in what He says\, but thankfully He doesn’t give up. Whatever position you are in\, be reassured\, Christ walks along with you. Keep walking and trust Him to see you safely through.

The spices that the women prepared to anoint the body of Jesus illustrate this.\nNobody says they wasted their time\, though it is most likely the spices were never used for anointing Jesus. Rather we see that it was the diligent preparation of spices that were never used that afforded them the privilege of being the first to discover the empty tomb.\nGod will never disregard time spent in preparation\, though the prepared material may not be used as intended. Jesus will honour your love for Him however it is expressed.

The rolling back of the stone was not to let Christ out\, He had already gone\, but to let the women and disciples in. Then having done the job the angel sat on the stone. Just as Christ had sat by a well waiting the woman coming to draw water\, so we see here the angel sitting on the stone\, waiting to welcome the women into the tomb to see for themselves.\nThe stone had shut people out. It had covered things up. It had been sealed by earthly authority. Now that power had been broken. The truth of the resurrection was revealed for all to see and the invitation to enter in to a living relationship was given to all. DESCRIPTION:“they kept watch over him there”.  We are not told why the soldiers felt it necessary to watch Jesus as he died on the cross. They had done their job\, shared the spoils just as they had done many times before. But they specifically sat down so as to watch Jesus as he died. Perhaps too much was going on for them to just walk away. Whatever the reason\, what they witnessed as they watched caused them to acknowledge\, just a few hours later\, “Surely he was the Son of God!” Seeing Jesus as a miracle-worker or incredible teacher is not sufficient. He can only become our Saviour and Lord when we thank Him for dying on the cross of Calvary for our sin. It’s not a pretty sight but it’s a glorious victory that brings forgiveness and freedom.

DESCRIPTION:“And the people stood beholding”.  The execution of Jesus was in public. God ordained it so. All and sundry gathered to witness the awful scene – soldiers\, religious leaders\, commoners and men of rank and even the two malefactors whom He predeceased by a few hours.\nJesus was atoning for the sins of the whole world and it was right that the people should stand beholding.\nWhere were those who acclaimed His triumphal entry only a week beforehand? Some at least must have been there.  Was it they felt they could do nothing?\nThey could emulate the Centurion. He said\, ‘Truly this man was the Son of God’. Your reaction when you stand beholding Jesus on the Cross is of more far-reaching consequence than you can ever imagine.

DESCRIPTION:“being in an agony he prayed more earnestly”.  Jesus sets an example we should follow. More difficulty calls for more prayer. When things are running smoothly\, prayer becomes smooth and easy – a sort of good habit that calls for little energy.\nIt is when faced with mounting problems\, with difficulties that will not resolve and paths that will not clear that an earnestness comes into praying. When Jesus saw the awfulness of the atoning death He was to endure He prayed earnestly.\nPraying earnestly under these circumstances is the alternative to not praying at all. Be sure you cling on to God in faith and that you increase the intensity of your prayer when agony of soul is upon you.

DESCRIPTION:“I have suffered many things this day in a dream”.  Was Pilate’s wife a devout and spiritual lady\, because she had such disturbing dreams? Her name was probably Claudia and tradition made her a proselyte to Judaism. She may have been the Claudia mentioned by Paul in his Second Letter to Timothy.\nShe stands out in the Gospel’s narrative as one dissident voice against the injustice of the mock trial and sentencing to death of Jesus. She urgently conveyed her fears to Pilate.\nShe joins the small band of women who knew great anguish of spirit when our Saviour was apprehended and tried. She is like a candle of piety in the darkest hour of history. Her tender heart responded to a dream about the momentous events taking place. Thank God for women like her.

There are times when everything is done for you\, when the matter is completely out of your hands: you just stand still and see it all happen.\nThose who have never stopped and stood still are likely to have missed the great experience of seeing the Lord work.\nYou cannot see the salvation of the Lord your God in a true relief if you are forever looking at other things! It is a great salvation; the Lord has provided marvellously for His people. Jehoshaphat learned that he did not have to fight this battle. His experience is a picture of our salvation. To say it is worth stopping to behold is an understatement.

It is no threat to the hearer. But talk about Jesus and the reason for His coming to our world: talk the Gospel and immediately you throw out a challenge. Mentioning Jesus’ Name is an affront to the stronghold of Satan. It is a direct attack.\nBut if you love the Lord\, how can you do otherwise? Yet the disciples of Jesus are often reticent to announce their allegiance to Him.  Take your stand with the Apostle Paul who said\, ‘I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ’.
