SUMMARY:"I had nearly lost my foothold" [Psalm 73:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“I had nearly lost my foothold”. The Psalmist tells us that he felt his feet slipping from under him when he considered the prosperity experienced by godless men. It seems that he listened to the evil suggestion that there was no point in following the Lord. This is his description of the wicked: \nProsperous: no struggles\, disgustingly healthy\, filled with pride\, resorting to violence\, they have more than their heart could desire. Summing up his observations in verse twelve he writes – ‘always carefree\, they increase in wealth’. He wondered what advantage there was in being godly. \nThe great crisis he was in was only averted when he went into the house of the Lord. Falling away is a real danger when we neglect the fellowship of like-minded believers in a corporate act of worship.

SUMMARY:"all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps" [Matthew 25:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps”. In Jesus’ Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins\, all of them woke up and all trimmed their lamps\, that is\, they all attempted to be ready. There is a day coming when we shall all wake up – wake up to find there is a judgment after death and that the story of God’s love in Christ coming to save all who believe is true. \nAll will wake up but all will not be ready. All the virgins had wedding garments and lamps that they trimmed but only half of them were ready with a supply of oil. \nIt is not enough to look the part of being a Christian\, to go through the motions: we need to have Christ – to receive Him\, to be born of the Spirit\, to have the oil of the Spirit in our lamps.

SUMMARY:"Lydia … heard us" [Acts 16:14]
DESCRIPTION:
“Lydia … heard us”. When God calls and you obey\, you usually soon find out what He is about to do. Remember\, it is God working in your life: you are not left on your own. \nPaul and his companions came to Europe for the first time. They had no planned course of action that we know of: they waited on the Lord to lead them. After a few days they went to a site at the riverside where some ladies gathered for prayer and preached to them. One of the ladies who heard was Lydia\, a seller of purple\, and it was the Lord who opened her heart and she became the first convert in Europe. \nThe point to make here is that Lydia heard because Paul preached. Many cross our path in the course of a life-time: they will only hear if we speak about Jesus to them.

SUMMARY:"the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand" [Daniel 1:2]
DESCRIPTION:
“the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand”. We may admire the all-conquering Nebuchadnezzar but must remember that the true victory is the Lord’s. We may mourn the demise of Judah under Jehoiakim but know that it was God’s judgment upon the nation. The reign of Jehoiakim was unhappy and his conduct evil. \nYet these turbulent times did bring men like Daniel and the three Hebrew boys to our attention – again because the Lord was unfolding His plan and purpose. They also gave us the prophetic visions of Daniel. \nAnd as you witness events unfolding around you\, remember God is in control. It is He who gives and He who takes away\, to both well-known and unknown. It is not whether you understand\, but that you believe that counts.

SUMMARY:"you are like unmarked graves" [Luke 11:44(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“you are like unmarked graves” . This was Christ’s indictment of the Pharisees. When trusted\, they turned out to be traps! And those falling into those traps found escape difficult. \nAll who care for others should take great pains not to abuse any trust or confidence placed in them. \nNot only is there need for our spiritual leaders to inspire confidence in themselves and what they say: those who lead must exercise great care that what they say is wholesome and that the example they set is the way their followers should go. \nChrist pointed this out to the Pharisees of His day. There will always be those who follow blindly; be sure you are not one who allows another with you to fall into an unmarked grave.
\n

SUMMARY:"so that people are without excuse" [Romans 1:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“so that people are without excuse”. An omniscient God knows what we are like. Ever since Adam and Eve\, we have always had a reason\, an excuse for our wrongdoing. We are quick to pass the blame when things go wrong. And we are no different with God. Adam even blamed God along with Eve\, ‘The woman you put here with me.’ We do the same. \nOnly when we stop making excuses and admit our wrongdoing before God can we know His salvation in Christ and forgiveness of sin. God cannot forgive excuses for sin\, but He can forgive the sinner. No-one can say to God\, ‘You are unfair.’ The omnipotent God has done everything to make Himself known\, even to being found in human likeness and living alongside us. There is no excuse\, but there is forgiveness – in Christ.

SUMMARY:"they were astonished" [Matthew 13:54]
DESCRIPTION:
“they were astonished”. The words of Jesus made the greatest impression though we can easily think His miracles made the greatest impact. Moses\, Elijah and the prophets performed miracles but no-one spoke like Jesus. \n‘Astonishment’ is the word Matthew uses to describe the reaction of the crowd. They heard the spoken word from God Himself. They expected just another teacher and found it was the Master: the Creator was telling them about His creation. \nHis words were with authority and contrasted sharply with the Scribes and teachers of the law. Their astonishment turned to incredulity. The same wonder exists today when Jesus speaks but we need our amazement to turn to faith.
\n

SUMMARY:"and enjoy it" [Joshua 1:15]
DESCRIPTION:
“and enjoy it”. The whole world needs to know this! There is enjoyment\, deep and lasting joy\, in serving the Lord. It was so for the Children of Israel in the Old Testament and it is just so for the followers of Jesus in the New. \nTo be a Christian and be miserable about it\, as some suggest by their demeanour\, is a contradiction. The soul that calls upon God for cleansing from sin\, for salvation through Christ and peace with God knows true joy. \nI’m glad the Lord told Joshua to tell the Children of Israel that they were to enjoy what God had in store for them. The same message is given by Jesus to His followers – their joy is to be full. There is rejoicing evermore in the Presence of the Lord. Enjoy it!

SUMMARY:"and many knew him" [Mark 6:33]
DESCRIPTION:
“and many knew him”. They had met Jesus before\, listened to His gracious words and teaching. Many would have witnessed His miracles and so when His boat drew into the shore they recognised Him and spread the word around. \nOnce you have met Jesus there is no problem recognising Him again. His presence and peace go with you and you see Him in situations where others who do not know Him seem to miss Him altogether. \nKnowing Jesus can only arise out of a personal encounter. This is what makes it an unforgettable experience. He accepts us as we are\, forgives our sin\, gives His gift of eternal life and hope and joy. And just as He did to His disciples after the resurrection\, so He appears to us in the most unexpected places and ways.

SUMMARY:"When you have eaten and are satisfied\, praise the Lord your God" [Deuteronomy 8:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“When you have eaten and are satisfied\, praise the Lord your God”. Recognise that all good gifts are received at His hand and bless and thank Him for every one of them. \nThe butler in Pharoah’s jail forgot Joseph’s kindness: the million or so Children of Israel escaping Egypt murmured against the Lord who so miraculously brought them out: many in the world today may ignore the blessings of a beneficent Creator but you be thankful to Him and bless His Name. \nWe should be both saddened and perplexed at man’s failure to properly distribute the resources available. But the fact that half the world is starving must not prevent me from playing my part in helping my fellow man. \nUnless God’s goodness to me makes me genuinely praise the Lord\, I am no better than an animal or an atheist.

SUMMARY:"when they had heard what great things he did" [Mark 3:8]
DESCRIPTION:
“when they had heard what great things he did“. From the very outset the ministry of Jesus was supported by healings and miracles. It seemed that the whole city of Capernaum gathered at the door of the house where Jesus was staying for what was\, in effect\, a great healing clinic. \nTimes have changed but not the Lord Jesus. He still does great things and people are hearing about them. \nThe existence of a vibrant and radiant Christian church made up of disciples bears testimony to this. Each one of them is conveying the good news of the great things the Lord does today. \nIf it should be that this is not very evident in your circle\, your street or among your friends\, maybe it is because you are not telling out what He has done for you.

SUMMARY:"Therefore we do not lose heart" [II Corinthians 4:16(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“Therefore we do not lose heart”. You lose heart when all hope has gone. It saps you of energy and motivation. It stifles any spirit within and leaves you vulnerable and weak. But whatever our present circumstances might be\, Paul gives believers reasons for not losing heart. He contrasts the physical suffering and decay with the renewing that is happening deep within us that one day will burst forth in eternal glory. He encourages us to keep our eyes fixed on what is now unseen\, but will be revealed when Jesus comes again. \nOne day our salvation will be complete and we will be transformed into the likeness of Christ himself. Troubles now\, will produce rich reward then\, which will never fade or decay. Don’t lose heart. Do keep going! [AP]

SUMMARY:"he will guide you into all truth" [John 16:13]
DESCRIPTION:
“he will guide you into all truth”. The Holy Spirit is the Divine agent in imparting salvation to all who believe – the ‘dispenser of Calvary’ as someone put it. \nThe Holy Spirit makes the things of God real to the heart of man. It is He Who convinces and convicts of sin. Any growth in grace may be attributed to the work of the Holy Spirit. Without His instruction and counsel there will be no progress. \nThe gifts of the Spirit produce the fruit of the Spirit. \nFruit bearing in the Christian’s life is directly proportional to the work of the Holy Spirt in the life of the person concerned. \nComfort for the distressed\, power for the weak and healing for the sick are all a ministry of the Holy Spirit. \nThere’s no real movement without the Holy Spirit.

SUMMARY:"But Zion said\, 'The Lord has forsaken me\, and my Lord has forgotten me.' " [Isaiah 49:14(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“But Zion said\, ‘The Lord has forsaken me\, and my Lord has forgotten me.’ “. So we squeal before we are hurt and fear what never afflicts us! \nThe prophet reminds us that the Lord has written the names of His children upon the palms of His hands. What right have we to conclude He has forgotten and forsaken us when things don’t fall out as we would like or expect? \nThere is great comfort in God’s Word if we will read it. Our light persecution turns to face Him\, if we will let it. Unanswered prayers are often the only thing that makes us continue talking to the Lord in prayer\, so keeping us waiting deepens our communion with our heavenly Father. \nBut on no account do any of those indicate He has left us.

SUMMARY:"the whole city came out to meet Jesus" [Matthew 8:34]
DESCRIPTION:
“the whole city came out to meet Jesus”. At first it appeared a full-scale revival whereas it turned out to be a wholesale rejection. The incident teaches us not to count heads but hearts. \nThe embassage that came to Jesus was to ask Him to leave\, not to welcome His miraculous life changing ministry. \nThe way of life of these men was threatened. Their pigs were of more value than the poor madman who lived in the tombs. No wonder the healed demoniac offered to leave their mercenary company and join Jesus and His disciples. But Jesus sent him home. So the Demoniac of Gadara began a ministry in his home town and among those who had\, to a man\, rejected Jesus. \nJesus still sends His disciples to homes where He is rejected. Count it an honour if you’re one so called.
\n

SUMMARY:"supposing that gain is godliness" [I Timothy 6:5]
DESCRIPTION:
“supposing that gain is godliness”. There always were those who saw godliness as a means of gain. They will argue that godliness\, if it is good\, must bring gain. The fallacy lies in the interpretation they place on godliness. True godliness is gain but it is also patterned on the teaching and example of the Lord Jesus. If we would see God we must behold Jesus: if we are to acquire godliness it will be at His hand. \nTrue gain is not to be found in the vaults of a bank nor claimed because a name appears on title deeds. \nTrue gain is known by the man whose soul is safe. He came into life with nothing but somewhere along the way someone told him and God revealed to him the great gift of eternal life in Christ. Taking that brought godliness with contentment – the greatest possible gain.

DESCRIPTION:
“I was not disobedient”. Paul’s testimony to obedience was great\, for disobedience was the sin that first dogged the history of the human race. It is disobedience to the Lord and His Word that causes misery and failure among those who would be Christ’s followers. \nIt is true that the path may look steep and the demands appear excessive for the follower of Jesus\, but if God asks us to follow Him\, He will give us the strength to do so. \nPaul made his statement amid many who made ship-wreck of the faith and it is a clarion call for us all to heed. \nIf we are to please Him who has called us to be Christian soldiers\, we need to be obedient.

DESCRIPTION:
“You alone are God”. The Psalmist had removed all other images from the throne of his heart. We need to remove all else and give the Lord Jehovah unchallenged worship. Acknowledging God is not enough: we need to remove the clutter that detracts our attention from Him. The modern day ‘gods’ of sport\, pleasure\, business\, leisure can take that important place that the Lord should occupy. \nIf He is God alone in reality in our heart\, He will fill our thoughts\, aims and aspirations. It is to Him we shall turn\, and it is His Name we shall worship. \nJesus must be Lord of all if He is to be Lord at all. SUMMARY:"strength to go in and take over the land" [Deuteronomy 11:8(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“strength to go in and take over the land”. Since the Lord created everyone with a job to do there must be every prospect of their being able to do it. If this is not so\, the conception of a loving Creator will not stand. It is in doing the job God has for us that most of us fall down: we live without consulting the ‘Maker’s Manual’. \nThe things we feed our minds upon give us false cravings for what is not good and so often distract us from our true aim which must be to glorify God. \nIn this Old Testament verse\, Moses conveys to the people that it is by finding and obeying God’s commands they will receive strength to take their rightful possession. \nThere is still much land to be occupied – but it is only by heeding God’s Word that you will possess it.

DESCRIPTION:
“his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation”. The Infinite God has an exhaustless supply of mercy and grace to those who honour Him\, giving Him His rightful place in their lives. \nThese words of Mary remind us that no matter by how many generations we are removed from the birth\, death and resurrection of Jesus\, the benefits and blessings we read of in the gospel can be ours today. \nJesus is not merely the head of the church and exalted to the Father’s right hand. He is with His disciples always as He promised even to the end of the age. \nThe number of generations covered by His promise does not matter. His mercy extends to you today\, whatever your circumstance\, however deep your need.

SUMMARY:"Let my prayer come before you" [Psalm 88:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:
“Let my prayer come before you”. The Psalmist seems to express the fear of so many\, namely that his prayers are intercepted and never reach the Lord Himself. As though there is a selection committee deciding which petitions are worthy of attention. \nCan God\, who describes the nations as a drop in a bucket and who attends to the affairs of the universe\, be concerned with the things that we bring before Him? \nNot just for his prayer to be heard but for sympathetic hearing was the Psalmist’s request. \nIs that not just what we are promised in our Saviour Jesus who was touched with the feelings we have\, who knows what life is like and who promises to keep us as well as save us? If our prayer is sincere\, we may be certain it is heard by the One who is committed to help.
\n

SUMMARY:"I will give peace in the land" [Leviticus 26:6]
DESCRIPTION:“I will give peace in the land”. Peace in the land when the people make the Lord their God. Yet where peace is found it is soon broken by one or another. \nThe blessed truth today is that in a world of war and strife\, Jesus brings peace to the heart. In the heart of man peace is found when forgiveness is sought and healing experienced and Jesus reigns as Lord. \nThe enemy is cast out and the Prince of Peace reigns through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. \nHow is it that those whom you might expect to be in greatest turmoil have the deepest peace? How is it that lives that have been veritable battlefields for many years suddenly experience lasting peace? Only because the Lord gives ‘peace that passes all understanding’.

SUMMARY:"as I was with Moses\, so I will be with you" [Joshua 1:5(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“as I was with Moses\, so I will be with you”. What God has done for others\, He can do for you! You will never be someone else or do exactly what they did\, but as the Lord was with His servants in time past\, upholding and providing for them\, so He will be with you. After all\, it is His presence\, rather than your strength or ability that matters. Without Him you can do nothing of eternal value. With Him you can do all things. \nThe task may be too great for you\, but ceases to be impossible when His power and presence are with you. His work carries on and his servants serve Him. The promise that He will be with you ensures that what you do will fit into an overall plan that He has for the body of Christ. Claim the promise: treasure the blessing.\n

SUMMARY:”blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord" [Jeremiah 17:7(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:”blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord”. It is worth referring to Jeremiah to see God’s assurances to those who put their trust in Him.\n 1. Like a tree planted by water – never suffering from drought.\n 2. Sending out roots by the stream – the more it spreads the more nourishment it finds.\n 3. Not afraid of oppressive heat because its leaves are always green.\n 4. No worries in the year of drought because it draws its strength from a heavenly supply.\n 5. Ever bearing fruit.\nAnd note that it is trust in the Lord evidenced by a confidence in Him that secures these.

SUMMARY:”his hand is stretched out still" [Isaiah 9:17]
DESCRIPTION:”his hand is stretched out still”. It is stretched out even though God’s people have not sought the Wonderful Counsellor\, Mighty God and Prince of Peace provided. Men and women in all generations\, realising their waywardness towards God\, have asked\, ‘Does God still care?’\nThe Lord is plentiful in mercy\, full of compassion and ever loving towards His children. He does chastise\, but not for ever. He does allow sorrow and distress but promises ‘your weeping shall be turned to joy’. If it should be that you cannot understand His dealings with you\, accept His invitation to trust Him and find how many pieces of life’s puzzle will fall into place. No one knows when God’s loving invitation to come to Him will close. This makes today the only sure time to accept.

SUMMARY:”I will make all my mountains a way" [Isaiah 49:11]
DESCRIPTION:”I will make all my mountains a way”. This is what Jehovah said to His People Israel and it is a promise He has never rescinded.\nMountains have not been removed either\, and the path over them often appears to be impassable. But those who commit their lives to the Lord will never be confounded. Either the Lord will reveal a way around the obstacle or give strength to surmount it.\nThe Lord promises that all things work together for good to those that love Him and that includes the mountains which we so often think are hindering our progress.\nOne thing the mountains in our way should never fail to do is to make us cry to the Lord for help and to trust Him to answer that prayer.

SUMMARY:for me" [Galatians 2:20]
DESCRIPTION:”for me”. Have you never opened a parcel\, stared in amazement at its content and then exclaimed “For me?” The gospel is a blessing because its message is so personal. It is something of great value to all who receive it.\nAll that we read happened when Jesus came to earth and lived and loved and died for us\, rose again and ascended into heaven appears in the way God intended when I realise it was for me. God’s love does something for me – it applies the remission for my sin when I claim the blood that Jesus shed.\nLoving and giving is something perfected in God. I must believe and receive and then express my love and gratitude to Him and to others. Incredibly His love is “for me”.

SUMMARY:”Exalt ye the Lord our God\, and worship at his footstool" [Psalm 99:5]
DESCRIPTION:”Exalt ye the Lord our God\, and worship at his footstool”. The Lord has done great things for His people and expects them to say so.\nIt is when we bow low before Him that we exalt Him high.\nFalse humility draws attention to itself: true humility ensures that the Lord fills the horizon. It is lifting high the Lord Jesus while retaining a low profile oneself that provides deep satisfaction to the glory of His Name. Philip told Nathanael his brother how wonderful Jesus was and brought him to see and hear the One Whom he found.\nJesus is exalted when your nothingness draws alongside His greatness; when you let Him do something with what you thought impossible; when you tell someone else what He has done for you and when you are seen to be worshipping Him.

SUMMARY:”you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ" [II Corinthians 8:9(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:”you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ”. The Son of God left the glory of heaven to enter our world through the womb of a woman. He lived and mingled unrecognised with the world of His day to give Himself as a sacrifice for the sin of the world. Freely and willingly and lovingly Christ died for us.\nBy grace we are saved – God’s love\, God’s grace. Free unmerited favour bestowed upon all who will believe. To those who receive Him He gives authority to be called the “sons of God.”\nKnowing this grace demands that the love of God be shed abroad in your heart filling your life with worship to Jesus and love to your fellowmen. Spread the message of His grace that others may come to know too.

SUMMARY:”My soul magnifies the Lord" [Luke 1:46(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:”My soul magnifies the Lord”. Mary’s heart welled up in praise at the events that had overtaken her. God’s goodness and graciousness to her was overwhelming. As her cousin joined her\, the two women were able to rejoice together in what God was doing. This should be the lasting sentiment of all our lives once we have yielded them to the Lord. If we could see and know what God was doing with those lives dedicated to Him there is little doubt that we would magnify His Name.\nThe Lord is worthy to be praised because of Who He is: He deserves all the praise and adoration of our heart for redeeming us from sin at such great cost. For all He is doing through the blessed Holy Spirit Whom the Father has sent we should praise and honour His Matchless Name.\nLet Mary’s song of praise be ours today.
