SUMMARY:”there will be a fulfilment of those things" [Luke 1:45(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:”there will be a fulfilment of those things”. Both Elizabeth and her cousin Mary had amazing experiences regarding their bearing children and the prophecies concerning them. As with so many instances where God works the events are quite startling.\nElizabeth had confirmation of her feelings when the babe leapt in her womb when Mary visited her. This made her give voice to the promise that God would fulfil his prophecies and promises.\nIt is the same today. Not only is God able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we can ask or think\, as we place our trust in Him\, He promises He will. He will save us and keep us and give us such desires of our heart as shall glorify His Name.

SUMMARY:”Having therefore obtained help of God" [Acts 26:22]
DESCRIPTION:”Having therefore obtained help of God”. Paul had gone a long way since his Saul of Tarsus days!\nHe had obeyed the vision God gave him on the Damascus Road\, as he told King Agrippa. He had found what all who follow the Lord find – once you begin to obey the Lord He gives you all you need.\nIt is not whether you consider the path ahead too steep or the task too difficult but whether you will obey and begin that counts. God gives you all the strength you need for the first step and when you have taken that He will give grace and strength for the second and so on. Paul’s testimony as he began the last of his many journeys was that it was only by God’s help he had reached that point. It is the same for all of us. Be among those who draw on this strength day by day.

SUMMARY:”For the Lord is great\, and greatly to be praised" [Psalm 96:4]
DESCRIPTION:”For the Lord is great\, and greatly to be praised”. Do you match God’s greatness to you by the greatness of your praise for Him?\n You praise Him in those times of worship when you close the door and meditate and magnify His Name in prayer.\n You praise Him when you testify to others of God’s great mercy and goodness in your life.\n You praise Him when you obey His Word; when you trust implicitly in what He says to you.\n You praise Him when you trust Him\, though you cannot understand what He is doing.\nAnd if you’ve not yet experienced the greatness of God in your life\, you’re missing out on the greatest experiences.\nAsk the Lord to make Himself known to you – He promised that those who seek Him would find Him.

SUMMARY:”they … supposed that they had seen a spirit" [Luke 24:37]
DESCRIPTION:”they … supposed that they had seen a spirit”. A silly question often asked when I was at primary school was\, ‘Do you believe in ghosts?’ The Bible makes no attempt to hide the reality and influence of a spirit world. Any attempt at contact or communication with it is strictly forbidden. Seeing a ghost or spirit is not something the majority of us relish. Mistaken identity on this point made the disciples cry out for fear.\nWrong identity or not\, when it is Jesus who reveals Himself to us\, that revelation brings peace and joy. There is a world of difference between a spirit and the spiritual. To be spiritually minded is life and peace. To have seen the Lord\, no matter how startling at first\, is a never-to-be-forgotten up-lifting experience\, and one that can happen when least expected.

SUMMARY:”a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat" [Isaiah 25:4(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:”a shelter from the storm and a shade from the heat”. Storm and heat – two of the elements that can make life intolerable for us. Storms that come upon us unexpectedly and dash our hopes to pieces. Heat that beats down upon us when shelter we enjoyed has been taken from us. It is in circumstances like these that the Lord provides shelter and shade.\nFor the poor and needy in distress\, when events overtake us like a storm driving against a wall and opposition is like the burning heat of the desert\, the Lord gives protection.\nNot only does the Lord make a way in the desert\, but He provides provision for the journey. Heat that beats down upon us He promises to reduce by the shadow of a cloud.

SUMMARY:”Sell your possessions and give to the poor" [Luke 12:33(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:”Sell your possessions and give to the poor”. Never has this been more timely than today! More people have more than ever before\, while there are more people in poverty than ever. The poverty trap will not open until the rich turn the key in the door. Looking after your surplus can be a worry: giving it to those in need could make the difference between living and dying.\nHow long are we going to tell those born in poverty that their forebears should not have misused aid given them? That many poor will waste any money given to them\, should not stop us giving a helping hand\, a new chance\, and to educate in the proper use of wealth and resources. The greatest offering is when to the poor the gospel is preached: that can see the transfer of eternal riches.

SUMMARY:”declare the praises of him" [I Peter 2:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:”declare the praises of him”. Declaring something is to make it known. It is a deliberate act. It is public and to the benefit of others. In a society that debases the name of Christ\, ours is the joy to declare His praise.\nPraise to God is in response to who He is and what He has done for us. Peter reminds us; ‘You are a chosen people\, a royal priesthood\, a holy nation\, a people belonging to God.’ Is that not enough to deserve our praise? ‘Called out of darkness into His wonderful light … now you are the people of God … you have received mercy.’ As our hearts fill with thanks may our voices declare His praise. Jesus told one man who had been delivered from demons\, ‘Go … tell how much God has done for you.’ He did and we can also. That’s true praise.

SUMMARY:”when he had sent them away\, he departed into a mountain to pray" [Mark 6:46]
DESCRIPTION:”when he had sent them away\, he departed into a mountain to pray”. The crowd was the field in which Jesus laboured. But it prevented Him having audience in prayer with his Father\, so He needed to send it away.\nSome of the things we need to shut out\, if we would be still in prayer before the Lord are – anxieties about little things that have been taking so much of our time; the important job we are about to tackle; care about everybody else; the demands that everybody is making upon us; self-pity for our present condition. All these are part of our ‘multitude’ or field of service. When we take them to prayer\, our mind dwells on them instead of on the Lord.\nIf you would walk with your heavenly Father\, you’ll need to ‘send them away’. They’ll return soon enough\, anyway.

SUMMARY:”you must inquire\, probe and investigate it thoroughly" [Deuteronomy 13:14(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:p>”you must inquire\, probe and investigate it thoroughly”. Departure from the way of the Lord even by a minority\, was something not to be countenanced under the Law given at Sinai. Such towns were to be completely destroyed.\nNow while we cannot condone such punishment in this day of grace\, there is always the danger that some will lead us away from the truth. They will suggest that this or that is alright though contrary to the Word of God\, and they will insist that new ideas must be good ideas. It is not always the case.\nGod’s Word conveyed through Moses has not lost its import.\nInquire\, probe and investigate is good counsel today.\nQuality control is an application for Christian living that we may have neglected for too long.

SUMMARY:”she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter" [Mark 7:26]
DESCRIPTION:”she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter”. When this woman heard about Jesus\, faith and hope rose in her heart and she acted upon them. She went to where Jesus was\, fell at His feet and besought Him for her demon-possessed daughter.\nSituations of distress and unhappiness that affect our lives from time to time need to be brought to Jesus.\nThe special thing about this woman is that she was not put off by an apparent rebuff from Jesus. Rather His words served to increase her faith and determination. She said that it was only a small thing she was asking.\nYours is only a small thing too\, when compared with what God can do. So let her tenacity be your pattern and ask and keep asking the Lord to grant your prayer.

SUMMARY:”I am the Lord" [Leviticus 26:1\,2\,13 & 45]
DESCRIPTION:”I am the Lord”. The Lord repeatedly reminded the Israelites that He was Lord as He gave instructions for their behaviour.\nLook at the prohibitions:\n No idols – wood\, stone or any man-made icon;\n No Sabbath desecration – it is the day to rest.\nLook at the long list of blessings:\n Good crops and harvest; all you need to eat;\n peace in the land; no threat from invasion;\n victory in battle and the presence of God among His People.\n No slavery to the Devil but service to the Lord.\nIn all this the bottom line now\, as then\, must be making Him Lord. Ours is the privilege to exalt Jesus to the highest place upon the throne of our heart. Where a life has this foundation today it makes all the difference.

SUMMARY:”when they got into the boat\, the wind ceased" [Matthew 14:32(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:”when they got into the boat\, the wind ceased”. The disciples’ experience is a picture of those who enter into the ark of salvation upon the seas of life.\nMany make shipwreck of the life God has given them. It was not Peter’s return to the boat\, but Jesus’ coming aboard that brought the calm. After all\, it is our fear of what will happen to us that makes us afraid.\nWhen Jesus comes into our life we have peace with God\, peace with ourselves and a purpose in the life He gives us. His presence makes all the difference. The hope of heaven and the joy of salvation transcend all the petty anxieties if we take Christ on board.\nWhen you know He is aboard with you\, storms that loomed large before are largely forgotten.

SUMMARY:”the glory which shall be revealed in us" [Romans 8:18]
DESCRIPTION:”the glory which shall be revealed in us”. Who are these that are to have glory revealed in them? They are nothing special to look at – it’s probably only when under pressure or duress you’d pick them out.\nTheir educational attainment may not be outstanding though some are keen to take every opportunity to learn more.\nFor them there is no bypassing suffering or avoiding difficulty – in some ways they have much persecution and adversity.\nStorms still rage about them like anybody else\, but if you look carefully\, you’ll see there is a peace in it all.\nGet near them\, though\, and they’re sure to tell you they love the Lord. They are Christians\, and the day is coming when the whole creation will be astounded at the glory of God seen in them.

SUMMARY:”he who lays up treasure for himself\, and is not rich toward God" [Luke 12:21(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:”he who lays up treasure for himself\, and is not rich toward God”. It is a natural desire to want to succeed. We are given pounds to trade with and talents to use. But it is making a profit without thought of God or seeking His will in it all that condemns us. And the world is full of people who are doing this.\nThe bank of heaven pays a good dividend – gilt edged in so much as it will never depreciate. Investment is easy and can be done by the poorest in this world’s rating.\nIndeed\, if you give to those in need until you have little left you can continue depositing good in the vaults of heaven.\nRich toward God may not be noticed by others\, but riches of that nature will never fade or fail.

SUMMARY:”You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once" [Deuteronomy 7:22(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:”You will not be allowed to eliminate them all at once”. Many parallels may be drawn between the restrictions laid by Jehovah upon the Children of Israel and God’s plan for His disciples today. Here is one of them. Success was not to be achieved immediately in the overthrow of the nations ranged against God’s People. It was not to be a short sharp battle followed by years of ease and laziness.\nAnd so\, the Lord Who gives you an average ‘three score and ten’ will fill each one of those years with just the degree of success needed to make the whole of your life accomplish that for which He has called you to be His servant.\nIt is today added to all the other days that will give the overall picture of success that the Lord has promised to give you.

SUMMARY:”they … wished for the day" [Acts 27:29]
DESCRIPTION:”they … wished for the day” . Storm or distress or grief can make the night seem endless. When tossed to and fro by the waves as Paul and his companions were\, or so disturbed that bed in the safety of home does not grant sleep\, you long for day.\nSuffering can seem like a never-ending night\, and many are called to suffer for their faith. Others just suffer seemingly without reason and irrespective of their faith. For them the night can seem endless.\nYet you know it is not! Your wish only extends to bring daybreak nearer. Your wish is a prayer.\nGod knows your longing\, He hears your cry. Often the Lord seems to extend our nights of suffering – but only to make the break of day more appreciated and blessed.

SUMMARY:”faithful over a few things" [Matthew 25:23]
DESCRIPTION:”faithful over a few things”. As children we play at what we one day expect to be real. Adulthood is not long reached before we realise few if any of our childhood dreams will come true. But it is not what you have missed but what you have been given that is important.\nAdult life and its responsibilities bring home the truth that for most of us mismanagement of what we have is our biggest problem.\nDon’t spend too much time chasing bubbles or reaching for the stars. Spend it developing what you have to the glory of God and to the benefit of your brother and sister in need.\nIt is not how much you have\, but how faithful you are with what you have\, that will matter when your final assessment is made.

SUMMARY:”if you consider me a partner" [Philemon v17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:”if you consider me a partner”. Partners can sometimes be easier to make than to keep\, especially if we are not prepared to maintain the relationship.\nPhilemon no doubt thought it an honour to have the Apostle Paul as a personal friend. The test came when on the strength of that friendship he was asked to do something. Irrespective of what he felt within\, was he prepared to forgive and receive back a runaway slave for Paul’s sake? Onesimus may have robbed him. The believer’s relationship with the Body of Christ is one of partnership. In the light of that\, he or she is asked to do many things just as difficult as Paul asked Philemon. But when you are in love with your Lord you’ll do anything. After all\, whatever you do can never equal that already done for you.

Matthew did not keep his conversion secret: rather\, he made it the opportunity for his acquaintances to hear Jesus for themselves. So we read that tax collectors and sinners sat at his table. Any not accepted in the synagogue found they were able to meet Jesus around the table in Matthew’s home. Not that Jesus shared with these men in their sinful life but He did make it quite obvious that He loved them (while hating their sin) and wanted to help them.\nIt’s a pity we don’t have more feasts like this one. Matthew’s workmates accepted the invitation extended to them. Sitting around a table is a good place to talk. When did you last sit and chat the gospel with those you invited to a meal?

SUMMARY:''the whole creation groans" [Romans 8:22(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:”the whole creation groans”. Groaning as a sufferer in pain for which no remedy can be found. The world is rocking beneath its own curse as well as its misuse by man. That war rages incessantly somewhere or other on our planet: that famine has a large proportion of our population in its grip: that as soon as one disease is spent another rears its painful head; these and many other signs say quite plainly that something is wrong. The whole world is groaning\, but for what?\nIt is surely anticipating the return of the Lord Jesus. He is its Creator and has said He will return again. He promises to resurrect what has expired and to return this world to rightful ownership. Those He assures of this know that all things work together for good.

SUMMARY:''let me glean and gather after the reapers'' [Ruth 2:7]
DESCRIPTION:”let me glean and gather after the reapers”. Ruth in the Old Testament is not unlike the Canaanite woman in the New Testament who begged for crumbs at Jesus’ table.\nShe was content to collect up what the others left. Circumstances had brought her low in worldly wealth but her situation brought out hidden beauty that we might otherwise have never seen.\nYou may not have all you want: it may be that your heart’s desire eludes you for many or all your days. But let the situation in which you find yourself bring out the best in you.\nEven the poorest can bestow the priceless gifts of kindness\, meekness\, love and gentleness which the more affluent find difficult to muster even when they see the need.

SUMMARY:”waiting for the moving of the water" [John 5:3]
DESCRIPTION:”waiting for the moving of the water”. The crowd clustered beneath the arches around Bethesda’s pool were clutching at a straw. The chance each had of healing was very small. Some of the ‘moving waters’ mankind still waits for are – to be left a fortune; to win the pools; become famous: have better luck next time; enjoy an easy life; experience perfect bliss! All are an illusion.\nYet there is something in life worth waiting for\, though it may elude some for a long time. It is an encounter with the living Christ Who rose from the grave 2\,000 years ago. It is this that has brought peace and purpose to His disciples ever since.\nWaiting is worthwhile when it is the Lord Who is coming.

SUMMARY:”But now … " [Ephesians 2:13]
DESCRIPTION:“But now … “. Thank God for ‘but now’! It is one ‘but’ we cannot do without. It is a declaration of being. It announces the difference Christ makes. It declares freedom and forgiveness from the past\, new life and new relationships for the present and the hope of heaven for the future. Each time it is used in the epistles\, it underlines the comparison with the past. It emphasizes the reality of living in Christ rather than in sin.\nListen to God’s ‘but now’. It removes the doubts that come to us all\, answers our questions and confirms our position before God. It banishes the old nature and welcomes the new. It lifts us out of despair and gives us hope to keep going. So come\, leave the old behind\, move on in Christ today and experience the ‘but now’ of God.

SUMMARY:"You did not choose me\, but I chose you" [John 15:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You did not choose me\, but I chose you”. Jesus chose to call His disciples. As far as we know\, all the twelve whom He called responded positively.\nIt was not an open invitation but a specific one. Jesus came to James and John mending their nets\, Peter and Andrew casting their net and Matthew sitting at the collector’s booth.\nThis does serve to show us the great honour that is ours when we hear Him calling us to follow Him. We may later testify that we decided to follow Jesus and so we did. The greater and wonderful thing is that He called us.\nThere are those who do not seem to hear His voice; others do not appreciate He is calling them personally. It must be a personal step – hearing His voice\, acting in obedience and then walking with Him.

SUMMARY:"those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works" [Titus 3:8(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works”. This is wise counsel to all believers. The danger is that the believer mistakenly thinks that faith is all that is needed.\nTo say I believe and not do anything that faith demands is like advertising my assumed godliness with no product to support it\, whereas good works undertaken in the name of the Lord speak more loudly than any spoken profession.\nWe need good works that spring from our faith. If we do not love our brother\, how can we love God? Faith in God is evidenced in love for our fellowmen. With your faith firmly placed on the atoning work of Christ for salvation\, for there is salvation in none other\, the good that you do today will be directly related to and identifiable with your faith.\nThe apostle urges us all to be careful to maintain this.

SUMMARY:"when did we see you …? " [Matthew 25:37\,38\,39(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“when did we see you …? “. Those pronounced righteous on the Day of Judgment repeatedly asked this question when told they had met the Lord and attended to His need.\nThe fact was that they had seen Him but not recognised Him – when they took warm clothes and wrapped the shivering child\, when they spent time prison visiting and sought to relieve the anguish of the prisoners\, when they took food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty and administered medicine to the sick. All this and a hundred and one other deeds of mercy brought these benefactors face to face with the Lord and they did not know it. But He did and remembered it as we see from the reward they received.\nOnly a relative few engage in these missions of mercy today\, don’t they?

SUMMARY:"a choice between the way that leads to life and the way that leads to death" [Jeremiah 21:8(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“a choice between the way that leads to life and the way that leads to death”. The choice found in Jeremiah is not the only one. God gives us all that same choice today. We cannot all be wealthy or educated or intelligent\, but we can all choose the way that leads to life. It is God’s way\, not ours. We would choose a way that looks right but all too often ends in defeat. Because Jesus died for our sins\, His is the way of life. There is forgiveness of sin\, newness of life and power to live to God’s glory through faith in Christ. This is the way that leads to life.\nSo much rubbish and undergrowth in modern living that it can be difficult to find the door. We are promised that we shall find it if we seek for it. When we do find it there comes the moment of decision for us to go forward in the way that leads to eternal life.

SUMMARY:"All my fountains are in you" [Psalm 87:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“All my fountains are in you”. This psalm extols the blessings of Zion\, the city of God. Zion speaks of the capital and centre of the kingdom of God and of the Children of God.\nThe fountains\, or springs as they are called refer to the strength and sustenance the Christian draws from the true family of God\, children\, friends\, privileges and protection. Scattered now\, as the salt of the earth\, the Christian must be looking for that city where God dwells with His people – a city that has foundations\, as Abraham sought long ago.\nIf you are drawing strength from the world it will dry up. Because the cisterns of this world hold no water of life\, set your affection upon the Lord and His promise and find with the Psalmist\, that all worth having is found in Him.

SUMMARY:"busy with your own house" [Haggai 1:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“busy with your own house”. Despite being busy\, the Israelites found that all their hard work was proving futile. The more they did\, the less they achieved. Whilst rebuilding the temple\, the people had become distracted with building homes for themselves and their priorities had changed. The house of the Lord could wait. Concern for self had replaced attention to God and as a result life was empty.\nOur busy lives can distract us from attention to the Lord. We can be so focussed on getting our lives in order that we leave the Lord waiting. We fit the Lord into the time available rather than being available with time for the Lord.\nThe excuse offered by the Israelites was that it was not yet time. Strange how we find time for other things! Put the Lord first and He will help sort out the business of life.
