SUMMARY:''the whole creation groans" [Romans 8:22(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:”the whole creation groans”. Groaning as a sufferer in pain for which no remedy can be found. The world is rocking beneath its own curse as well as its misuse by man. That war rages incessantly somewhere or other on our planet: that famine has a large proportion of our population in its grip: that as soon as one disease is spent another rears its painful head; these and many other signs say quite plainly that something is wrong. The whole world is groaning\, but for what?\nIt is surely anticipating the return of the Lord Jesus. He is its Creator and has said He will return again. He promises to resurrect what has expired and to return this world to rightful ownership. Those He assures of this know that all things work together for good.

SUMMARY:''let me glean and gather after the reapers'' [Ruth 2:7]
DESCRIPTION:”let me glean and gather after the reapers”. Ruth in the Old Testament is not unlike the Canaanite woman in the New Testament who begged for crumbs at Jesus’ table.\nShe was content to collect up what the others left. Circumstances had brought her low in worldly wealth but her situation brought out hidden beauty that we might otherwise have never seen.\nYou may not have all you want: it may be that your heart’s desire eludes you for many or all your days. But let the situation in which you find yourself bring out the best in you.\nEven the poorest can bestow the priceless gifts of kindness\, meekness\, love and gentleness which the more affluent find difficult to muster even when they see the need.

SUMMARY:”waiting for the moving of the water" [John 5:3]
DESCRIPTION:”waiting for the moving of the water”. The crowd clustered beneath the arches around Bethesda’s pool were clutching at a straw. The chance each had of healing was very small. Some of the ‘moving waters’ mankind still waits for are – to be left a fortune; to win the pools; become famous: have better luck next time; enjoy an easy life; experience perfect bliss! All are an illusion.\nYet there is something in life worth waiting for\, though it may elude some for a long time. It is an encounter with the living Christ Who rose from the grave 2\,000 years ago. It is this that has brought peace and purpose to His disciples ever since.\nWaiting is worthwhile when it is the Lord Who is coming.

SUMMARY:”But now … " [Ephesians 2:13]
DESCRIPTION:“But now … “. Thank God for ‘but now’! It is one ‘but’ we cannot do without. It is a declaration of being. It announces the difference Christ makes. It declares freedom and forgiveness from the past\, new life and new relationships for the present and the hope of heaven for the future. Each time it is used in the epistles\, it underlines the comparison with the past. It emphasizes the reality of living in Christ rather than in sin.\nListen to God’s ‘but now’. It removes the doubts that come to us all\, answers our questions and confirms our position before God. It banishes the old nature and welcomes the new. It lifts us out of despair and gives us hope to keep going. So come\, leave the old behind\, move on in Christ today and experience the ‘but now’ of God.

SUMMARY:"You did not choose me\, but I chose you" [John 15:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You did not choose me\, but I chose you”. Jesus chose to call His disciples. As far as we know\, all the twelve whom He called responded positively.\nIt was not an open invitation but a specific one. Jesus came to James and John mending their nets\, Peter and Andrew casting their net and Matthew sitting at the collector’s booth.\nThis does serve to show us the great honour that is ours when we hear Him calling us to follow Him. We may later testify that we decided to follow Jesus and so we did. The greater and wonderful thing is that He called us.\nThere are those who do not seem to hear His voice; others do not appreciate He is calling them personally. It must be a personal step – hearing His voice\, acting in obedience and then walking with Him.

SUMMARY:"those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works" [Titus 3:8(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“those who have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works”. This is wise counsel to all believers. The danger is that the believer mistakenly thinks that faith is all that is needed.\nTo say I believe and not do anything that faith demands is like advertising my assumed godliness with no product to support it\, whereas good works undertaken in the name of the Lord speak more loudly than any spoken profession.\nWe need good works that spring from our faith. If we do not love our brother\, how can we love God? Faith in God is evidenced in love for our fellowmen. With your faith firmly placed on the atoning work of Christ for salvation\, for there is salvation in none other\, the good that you do today will be directly related to and identifiable with your faith.\nThe apostle urges us all to be careful to maintain this.

SUMMARY:"when did we see you …? " [Matthew 25:37\,38\,39(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“when did we see you …? “. Those pronounced righteous on the Day of Judgment repeatedly asked this question when told they had met the Lord and attended to His need.\nThe fact was that they had seen Him but not recognised Him – when they took warm clothes and wrapped the shivering child\, when they spent time prison visiting and sought to relieve the anguish of the prisoners\, when they took food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty and administered medicine to the sick. All this and a hundred and one other deeds of mercy brought these benefactors face to face with the Lord and they did not know it. But He did and remembered it as we see from the reward they received.\nOnly a relative few engage in these missions of mercy today\, don’t they?

SUMMARY:"a choice between the way that leads to life and the way that leads to death" [Jeremiah 21:8(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“a choice between the way that leads to life and the way that leads to death”. The choice found in Jeremiah is not the only one. God gives us all that same choice today. We cannot all be wealthy or educated or intelligent\, but we can all choose the way that leads to life. It is God’s way\, not ours. We would choose a way that looks right but all too often ends in defeat. Because Jesus died for our sins\, His is the way of life. There is forgiveness of sin\, newness of life and power to live to God’s glory through faith in Christ. This is the way that leads to life.\nSo much rubbish and undergrowth in modern living that it can be difficult to find the door. We are promised that we shall find it if we seek for it. When we do find it there comes the moment of decision for us to go forward in the way that leads to eternal life.

SUMMARY:"All my fountains are in you" [Psalm 87:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“All my fountains are in you”. This psalm extols the blessings of Zion\, the city of God. Zion speaks of the capital and centre of the kingdom of God and of the Children of God.\nThe fountains\, or springs as they are called refer to the strength and sustenance the Christian draws from the true family of God\, children\, friends\, privileges and protection. Scattered now\, as the salt of the earth\, the Christian must be looking for that city where God dwells with His people – a city that has foundations\, as Abraham sought long ago.\nIf you are drawing strength from the world it will dry up. Because the cisterns of this world hold no water of life\, set your affection upon the Lord and His promise and find with the Psalmist\, that all worth having is found in Him.

SUMMARY:"busy with your own house" [Haggai 1:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“busy with your own house”. Despite being busy\, the Israelites found that all their hard work was proving futile. The more they did\, the less they achieved. Whilst rebuilding the temple\, the people had become distracted with building homes for themselves and their priorities had changed. The house of the Lord could wait. Concern for self had replaced attention to God and as a result life was empty.\nOur busy lives can distract us from attention to the Lord. We can be so focussed on getting our lives in order that we leave the Lord waiting. We fit the Lord into the time available rather than being available with time for the Lord.\nThe excuse offered by the Israelites was that it was not yet time. Strange how we find time for other things! Put the Lord first and He will help sort out the business of life.

SUMMARY:"May all who come to you be glad and joyful" [Psalm 70:4(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“May all who come to you be glad and joyful”. They will\, if it is the Lord they seek. In the Old Testament the Lord has promised that if we seek Him with all our heart we will find Him. Finding Him is like finding the pearl of great price\, and worth losing the world if necessary to keep it.\nHe is the blessed and only Potentate\, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is the First and the Last\, the Omniscient and Omnipresent One.\nInstead of rejecting us\, which is what we might expect\, He promises to receive us. He lifts a man or woman out of the valley of despair and depth of failure and sets them on a high place of purpose and usefulness. Come to Christ\, if you would know a deep joy and a transcendent gladness.

SUMMARY:"he inquired of them the hour when he got better" [John 4:52(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he inquired of them the hour when he got better”. In other words\, the nobleman checked out whether it was at the time that Jesus gave him the promise of healing that his boy was actually healed.\nThe gift of healing\, like answered prayer and any other promise of the Lord\, stands investigation. Things do happen by coincidence and there may be occasions when the mind exerts influence over matter. But when God works in answer to requests made to Him\, these have no place. It was not coincidence that the boy was healed at the same hour the nobleman talked with Jesus; it was an indication that the Word of the Lord healed him. And the father gave God the glory.\nCheck out what has happened and when you find what the Lord has done\, give Him all the glory and praise.

SUMMARY:"all that God had done with them" [Acts 14:27]
DESCRIPTION:“all that God had done with them”. This was the agenda for Paul’s meeting with the church at Antioch and the end of their first great missionary journey. It is always on the agenda when servants of the Lord return home after a tour of duty.\nWe should all recognise the hand of God in our lives and take opportunity to testify to His blessing and keeping power. God wants to do something to His eternal glory in each one of our lives. We do not labour in temporal things though we are in a physical world.\nThe weapons of our trade (or warfare) are spiritual.\nThe most important fact that Paul could mention was being used of God to bring the Gospel to others\, in his case\, to the Gentiles. And we are called to follow Christ and lead others to that commitment of faith.

SUMMARY:"you will eat and be satisfied" [Deuteronomy 11:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you will eat and be satisfied”. We all eat but not all of us are satisfied. The menu for satisfied diners is to be found in the Word of God. God linked complete satisfaction with loving the Lord your God and serving Him with all your heart and soul. Only in this way can you know true contentment. Ignoring God\, or being ignorant of Him\, generally results in eating and ever wanting more. This is so in whatever way the hunger is expressed.\nSeeking and finding God and then loving Him for Who He is points to an eating of the satisfying diet of His goodness – a gathering in the good grain of His provision so that you and those with you are satisfied.\nIf life is not satisfying\, pay attention to the type of food you’re living on.

SUMMARY:"Noah lived 950 years\, and then he died" [Genesis 9:29(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Noah lived 950 years\, and then he died”. A fascinating way to record this man who built the ark. First\, that he lived for so long: he was six hundred when he entered the ark. Second\, that though he lived so long\, he still took that step common to us all – he died.\nIf we live one tenth his years we do well. But the inevitable must be faced. The following are worthy of note: \n We can prepare for dying by living – Noah did\, the Bible describes him a righteous man.\n We cannot return (or even go back a year or two) for a second try – today is God’s gift to us once: there will never\n be a day just like this one.\n We need to be ready for when the Lord comes or calls. \nDeath has lost its “sting” since Jesus died for all those who will receive His salvation today.

SUMMARY:"a great multitude" [John 5:3]
DESCRIPTION:“a great multitude”. Chronic sufferers\, cripples\, psychosomatics\, paralytics and those suffering as the result of an accident\, yet all there with one declared purpose – to get well again. This ‘great multitude’ is a picture of the world at large. Not all suffer in this way\, but all fall victim of sin which is rampant in our world. All are looking for improvement. Passing years can dampen the greatest enthusiasm and extinguish the flame of hope in anybody’s heart. Yet in Christ Jesus there is hope for every one of this world’s ‘great multitude’. He lifts the load\, cleanses the guilty conscience and gives a new start to a new life.\nThis world’s multitude is not too great for God to single out a blessing for you today.

SUMMARY:"godless chatter" [I Timothy 6:20(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“godless chatter”. Some people’s tongue is like a machine that never stops. They go on like a car without brakes rolling downhill. And incessant chatter easily resorts to godlessness. The godly man examines his words before he speaks them.\nHe stops speaking before he needs to apologise for what he has said.\nSmall talk is shallow talk and does not allow for serious discussion. There are a hundred and one subjects the chatterer will try before he allows you to dwell on anything of great import.\nIt does serve to show the great value of godly conversation when we can get away from the incessant prattle of the chatterer.\nSpeak often if you must\, but let it be on the things that matter.

SUMMARY:"Let us make a little chamber" [II Kings 4:10]
DESCRIPTION:“Let us make a little chamber”. The prophet Elisha stayed in this home whenever he passed by that way and the lady of the house wanted to provide for the comfort he deserved. She had a desire to serve the Lord. Her husband recognised the wisdom of her suggestion and put no obstacle in her way. Though few words describe the situation\, it seems that both man and wife made a good partnership.\nFurthermore her simple desire to do something developed into greater things and she is the subject of one of the many miracles that took place in the time of Elisha.\nShe miraculously bore a son and when he was grown saw him wonderfully restored to life. It may only be a little chamber that you feel led to build\, but there is no knowing where one step of obedience will lead.

DESCRIPTION:“Strengthen\, O God\, what you have done for us”. This should be the prayer of all who have known the touch of God in their life. The voice of the Lord speaking to us\, the consciousness of His hand upon us\, the power of the Holy Spirit ministering through us are just the beginning.\nGod supplies strength day by day – not a stock that will last us for the week! We need daily to draw upon Him. He will continue to supply all we need until life’s journey is complete. He will never put us in a path and then leave us to go forward in our own strength. It is by calling upon Him that we put ourselves in a place where His strength can pour into our weakness.\nWe see then how day by day He would perfect the work begun in each of His children. We call to Him to strengthen what He has begun in us.

It is a definite decision to trust the Lord only made possible because one realises that Jesus died for one’s sins and rose again to be the Saviour of all who would take this step.\nBut once taken the matter does not rest there. It is followed by a witness of the Holy Spirit. This is hardly surprising because the true Christian is born of the Spirit. The witness enables one to say\, ‘I know whom I have believed’.\nThen there are gifts of the same Spirit\, – many of them listed in the Epistles. Any gift of the Spirit should make me know a little more about the giver. Faith in Christ is far more than an act of the will.

SUMMARY:"put my money to the exchangers" [Matthew 25:27]
DESCRIPTION:“put my money to the exchangers”. Jesus told the Parable of the Talents to emphasize our responsibility to do something with what we have now. Five simple suggestions for the one-talent holders:\n 1. Write a letter of comfort\, encouragement\, sympathy as the occasion demands.\n 2. Use your telephone to testify to a friend about God’s goodness to you.\n 3. Ask the Holy Spirit to lay upon your heart someone for whom you should pray regularly and do so.\n 4. Go out of your way and make a special effort to be considerate to someone whom you naturally find it hard to get\n on with. They will be surprised and you will be blessed.\n 5. Speak a word in season – ask the Lord to reveal to you both time and place.

SUMMARY:"thirsty" [Isaiah 55:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“thirsty”. Water is essential to life and thirst is the driving force that sees we get it. We will stop at nothing to obtain water.\nThere are other desperate longings that can be likened to thirst – desire after knowledge\, search for a meaning and purpose in our life\, achievement of whatever it is we set our mind upon. Some things we say that we long for more than anything else.\nThirst is a recurring experience with one exception\, that being the water of life that Jesus offers. He offers living water to those who will receive Him as Saviour and serve Him as Lord. The gospel is designed for thirsty people\, those who long for their deepest needs to be met. Isaiah’s words are right up to date. God’s call is “Come all you who are thirsty”. Come and drink today.

SUMMARY:"all speak the same thing" [I Corinthians 1:10]
DESCRIPTION:“all speak the same thing”. Many gifts and much activity call for disciplined unity.\nWe need to seek God’s mind that there be no divisions as each of us adds his or her idea. The message of the gospel is clear\, the assurance of salvation and peace with God are blessed experiences. It is the embellishments we put on them that appear to make it look as though we are not perfectly joined together. It is not that some need to be ready to temper their special points\, we all need to relive and find again the truths and foundation of the apostles and prophets.\nIf no-one is prepared to change there will be no healing. If I seek the Lord to heal my backsliding and my brother does too\, there will be a fusion of the Spirit that can only bring blessing.

SUMMARY:"the Lord himself will strike him" [I Samuel 26:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the Lord himself will strike him”. David had opportunity to slay Saul and did not take it. Sometimes what seem to be opportunities are best left alone. Abishai\, David’s companion gave two good reasons why David should take the opportunity to slay Saul.\nFirst\, Saul hated David for selfish reasons and hounded him throughout the country for many months. David had done all and more than anyone could expect to appease Saul.\nSecond\, the opportunity to slay him presented itself without his asking. David and Abishai stole into the camp of Saul at night and found the king and all with him soundly asleep.\nNow note the one reason that David proffered – killing Saul is something the Lord will do in His good time. David’s decision proved right. The Lord help you in difficult choices you have to make today.

SUMMARY:"profit" [Mark 8:36]
DESCRIPTION:“profit”. This word has become associated with business: Jesus applied it to living. He made it clear that after death\, or the conclusion of life as we know it\, there was to be a resurrection and judgment based on this present life.\nGoods and possessions cannot be carried into the next world\, but treasure can be laid up in heaven. Those who are cluttered with this world’s goods can find they have no time for what God would say to them and is seeking to do with them. In that respect their lives are profitless.\nJesus spoke about losing your soul because He came to save your soul. And the further you feel you have failed\, the more He is able and ready to save you. And should it be that you started with nothing and found Christ\, then that surely is the greatest profit.

SUMMARY:"the preaching of the cross" [I Corinthians 1:18]
DESCRIPTION:“the preaching of the cross”. Many noble lessons may be drawn from the life and death of Jesus. Lessons drawn must not take the place of the actual fact that Christ died for our sins. The sins of the world were laid upon Him and His death atones for the sin of all who believe. Not what the cross teaches us but what it is and does is the most important.\nThe preaching of the cross divides into two – those who accept and those who reject. It is not a subject for speculation and discussion\, though many make it so and go no further. It is the very life-line pulling others to salvation.\nNo name other than Jesus who died on the cross. Only His blood can atone for our sin. Nothing we can add to improve the cross – the work of salvation was completed as Jesus cried “It is finished”.

SUMMARY:"He supposed that his brethren understood" [Acts 7:25(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He supposed that his brethren understood”. Moses was not the only man to assume his fellow men would understand\, only to find they did not appreciate what he was doing.\nFolk can change\, and those who have gone along with what we said for years can suddenly turn against us.\nSome whom we trust implicitly because of their apparent loyalty are in fact only paying us lip service. When another or a better comes along they’ll be gone. And anyway\, most of us are reluctant to say what we feel because of the consequences. All are\, to some extent\, wearing a polite mask or chauvinistic cloak.\nThe only One Who really understands\, therefore the only One Whom you can with confidence implicitly trust\, is the Lord Jesus.

SUMMARY:"Jesus took the loaves" [John 6:11]
DESCRIPTION:“Jesus took the loaves”. It takes an eye of faith to spot the starting material!\nYou or I would have politely thanked the boy but done nothing more. Jesus took the gift and used it mightily.\nDon’t look at the size of the gift. Jesus promised that His followers would do greater works than this after His Ascension. It is not what you are given\, but why it was given that is important. The truth sometimes dawns upon your mind that the donor is giving to the Lord. Because the Lord cannot be seen\, those making a gift must sometimes place it into your hands.\nHave you been neglecting your responsibility in this matter. Have you missed the loaves that God is waiting to take? There is no lower limit on what the Lord can use!

SUMMARY:"Deliver me from my enemies\, O God" [Psalm 59:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Deliver me from my enemies\, O God”. This is the cry of a man who cannot find his own way out of the dilemma in which he finds himself. It might be that his own indiscretion has landed him in this predicament.\nMore likely it is because he has stood firm for the truth that has aroused opposition.\nThere may be those who have no enemies – but they are few. Jesus’ ministry was one of help and counsel without parallel\, yet it antagonised the religious leaders of his generation.\nAvoiding those speaking against one only puts off the issue. On the other hand\, confrontation may merely seek to satisfy one’s sense of justice.\nGod has never been known to fail. When things threaten to get too difficult or out of hand\, call on Him for deliverance.

SUMMARY:"the tradition of the elders" [Mark 7:5]
DESCRIPTION:“the tradition of the elders”. Some tradition provides a good foundation for life and duty. Other tradition is of little importance. Resistance against change and new blessings God would give us\, we must guard against.\nTradition can be like unnecessary baggage that we carry around with us.\nIn Jesus’ day tradition had got out of hand. God would lead us into new pasture and bestow new mercies upon us every morning. We need to take care our line is not clogged with the “always done it this way” that stifles life at birth. Ceremonial washing means nothing compared with the cleansing Jesus gives within.\nThe careful clearing out of tradition when it is like dead wood might be just what we need.
