SUMMARY:"supposing to add affliction to my bonds" [Philippians 1:16]
DESCRIPTION:“supposing to add affliction to my bonds”. The Apostle Paul was referring to those who sought to ridicule his faith and who made evil insinuations about the followers of the Lord. Their intentions back-fired for\, as Paul says later\, ‘every way … Christ is preached’.\nToday there are those around who take delight in stirring up contention or in ridiculing the truth and if you are the object of such an attack\, the Apostle’s words should be of great encouragement to you.\nAll things work together for good: without doubt this includes all occasions when the name of Christ is mentioned. If the way you live is making people talk about the Lord\, be it sincerely or otherwise\, you have cause for rejoicing. Yours is better than those lives which don’t seem to say anything.

SUMMARY:"He was a burning and a shining light" [John 5:35]
DESCRIPTION:“He was a burning and a shining light”. John was what all who hear God’s voice should be. He shone in the darkness that was around in his day. He was more anxious to convey the truth than to please his hearers.\nNote these distinctive features about his ministry.\n 1 He ever exalted Jesus\, preparing the hearts of the people to receive Him.\n 2 He was not discouraged when he lost his audience: rather he rejoiced in the appearance of Jesus.\n 3 He fearlessly proclaimed the truth before small and great – and lost his head for it when no more than 30 years of age.\nIf we are to be a burning and a shining light in the circle in which we move\, we must be properly fuelled.

SUMMARY:"whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple" [Acts 21:29]
DESCRIPTION:“whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the temple”. A turning point came in the 21st chapter. Up to that time the Apostle had more or less been free to plan and make his own itinerary. In this chapter he was mobbed by his fellow countrymen in Jerusalem and rescued by the Roman militia who took him prisoner.\nThis happened because the mob was fed with wrong information – they supposed that Paul had defiled the Temple by admitting Greeks into it. But the false accusation and arrest did not finish the usefulness of God’s servant. Rather it resulted in his appearance before kings and opportunity to preach in Imperial Rome.\nDon’t spend too much time fretting about a false accusation: rather look for the new avenues of service it might bring.

SUMMARY:"woe is unto me\, if I preach not the gospel" [I Corinthians 9:16]
DESCRIPTION:“woe is unto me\, if I preach not the gospel”. The Apostle Paul felt the need to preach the gospel because he had heard it\, received it and experienced its blessings. The same holds for all who know the truth of the gospel.\nPreaching is proclaiming and Paul preached to individuals and to groups. Our preaching should be telling others the need to repent and believe in Christ as Saviour and Lord. If preaching and believing were confined to the pulpit\, few would hear.\nThe gospel must remain the centre of a full-gospel ministry.\nChrist died for our sins\, was buried and the third day rose again. This should be on the menu at every preaching occasion. It is a truth foretold in the Old Testament\, described four-fold in the Gospels and the foundation of all teaching in the Epistles.

SUMMARY:"I was afraid" [Matthew 25:25]
DESCRIPTION:“I was afraid”. Some people say anything. The man in this parable with one talent was one of them. Of what was he afraid?\nHe was lazy – pleasure loving too – for he felt able to please himself once the talent was safely buried.\nHe was short-sighted. He did not consider the consequence he would face when the lord returned and he had nothing to show for the talent entrusted to him.\nOr was he unbelieving\, thinking his lord would never return? Did he think his lord was such a person as never to be angry?\nYou have talents – probably more than one if you think about it – and the Lord the Creator has said He will return to take account.\nIn this parable Jesus described the man above as wicked and slothful. What will He say about you…and me?

SUMMARY:"the King's Highway" [Numbers 20:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the King’s Highway”. This is the name of the road through the land of the Edomites that Moses and the Israelites agreed to keep to if permission was given for them to pass. Any freedom-loving country values its rights of way and government should seek to make them secure.\nIn all of life there is one highway that is safe to travel. It can rightly be deemed “the King’s” for the King laid it from the plains of earthly life to the glory of heaven. Described in detail in the Bible\, we can trace it from the man’s fall in Eden to the death of Jesus God’s Son upon the cross. Maintained by the Spirit of God it demands that we deny self and take up a cross and follow Jesus. The Edomites refused passage to Israel\, but God invites all who will to tread His narrow way that leads to life.

SUMMARY:"receive the kingdom of God as a little child" [Mark 10:15]
DESCRIPTION:“receive the kingdom of God as a little child”. \nA child’s acceptance is characterised by –\n Unquestioning trust\n Unabashed delight at receiving\n Readiness to accept more\n Continued expectancy\n The anticipation of constant attention – and no child is deterred by either the size or apparent impossibility of what is asked.\nToo many of us try to receive the gospel as a philosopher\, lawyer\, scientist\, intellectual or critic. The gospel will stand examination by all these\, but it will only be received with childlike faith.

SUMMARY:"in the end he is nothing but a fool" [Jeremiah 17:11(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“in the end he is nothing but a fool”. Jeremiah describes the person who gets money dishonestly as a bird that hatches eggs it did not lay and adds that in the prime of life he will lose his riches. You may have a lot\, but if all you have can be taken from you\, the Bible describes you as a fool. Security beyond the grave can only be found in Christ.\nJesus says that the Kingdom of heaven is like the Lord entrusting us with talents appropriate to our ability. We need to trade – not to accrue to ourselves but for our Master who will return and call us to account. It is what happens in the end that counts eternally.\nLet it not be that in the end we are judged nothing but a fool.

SUMMARY:"All the nations will be gathered before him" [Matthew 25:32(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“All the nations will be gathered before him”. The Second Advent of the Lord Jesus will be in stark contrast with the First. At the Incarnation God presented His Son to mankind: at His Second Appearing all nations will be made to appear before Him.\nWhen Jesus was born in Bethlehem only a handful in the village knew about the event: when next the world sees Him He will be seated on the throne to which His Father has exalted Him.\nSince the day of His ascension His disciples have proclaimed the Good News of Jesus as Saviour. When He appears upon His Throne He will be Judge of all mankind.\nUndoubtedly the most important issue will be what each person did with the offer of salvation made freely to all men.

SUMMARY:"Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God" [Romans 8:8(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God”. You can neither please nor serve both God and mammon.\nThere are no double-agents in Christ’s kingdom!\nSatan is responsible for our fallen nature and he makes sure that he controls it. Those who serve sin are sin’s servants. The Devil declared war on God and there is to be no armistice. Please him and you will not please God.\nThe good news is that Jesus can deliver those who are bound by the Devil. Because of this\, trying to please God while retaining sin is impossible. The first step Godward must be attending to the sinful nature. The fountain opened for sin and uncleanness at Calvary has never been stopped.\nOnce the heart is cleansed\, every department of life must benefit. Living to please God is the greatest joy of all.

SUMMARY:"Our God is a God who saves" [Psalm 68:20(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Our God is a God who saves”. He saves a person from the penalty for sin. His atoning sacrifice on Calvary meets the demands of His justice and brings instant peace to all who seek refuge beneath it.\nHe saves man from himself. What glaring errors\, calamitous misjudgments and irrevocable blunders I am capable of. But the Good Shepherd saves many a stupid sheep like me.\nHe saves those who trust Him from the wrath of man. What derision and persecution the world can heap upon the committed Christian! What barbed antagonism can be ranged against the child of God! But he need not fear for His God is One Who saves from this also.\nAnd He saves from the Devil – the roaring lion who goes about seeking to devour us. The Father of lies can do nothing to alter the glorious truth that ours is a God Who saves.

SUMMARY:"the children's crumbs" [Mark 7:28]
DESCRIPTION:“the children’s crumbs”. It is the ‘children’s crumbs’ I need from the Lord Who made and upholds all things I can ever see or know.\nWhat seems impossible to me is no problem for Him: the improbable to me is everyday to Him.\nIf I can get into right perspective what I feel I need and what He can do\, much of my difficulty will be solved.\nBy telling Him that the healing of her demented daughter was a mere crumb to the Lord\, though the greatest thing that could happen to her\, this Greek lady opened the gates of God’s blessing into her life. She must have been glad that the Lord extracted this confession from her by seeming to ignore her request.\nThere is no reason why the same should not happen to us today if we will exhibit the same faith.

SUMMARY:"The sins of some are conspicuous" [I Timothy 5:24(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The sins of some are conspicuous”. They are the ones that the rest of mankind hypocritically dub as criminals\, enemies of society\, without restraint\, and so on.\nBut sin is not something that only exists when discovered.\nAll have sinned and fallen short of the mark. Secret sinners\, polished sinners and disguised sinners are probably the worst of all.\nConvicted criminals bear some punishment now. Secret sinners mistakenly think they might get away with it.\nIf all who should be were apprehended\, the courts of human justice would grind to a halt. The Divine judiciary knows nothing of this problem. And the best news of the day for all is that Jesus is the ‘Friend of Sinners’.

SUMMARY:"Have faith in God" [Mark 11:22]
DESCRIPTION:“Have faith in God”. It is not without significance that these words were spoken in relation to a fig tree that withered and died when Jesus cursed it having found no fruit thereon.\nFew of us have a faith in God that extends to fig trees\, or the little things of life. We feel we can manage the sand-dunes ourselves: it is when climbing mountains we need help from the Lord. To most of us\, faith is like a booster rocket – only to be used in short sharp bursts when needed. It is something to get us round tight corners\, or swiftly past the experiences we don’t relish.\nBut Jesus brought it into the after-dinner dessert of life. He showed that an unproductive fig tree was within the confines of faith.\nFaith in God for every department of your life is not misplaced.

SUMMARY:"and there he called on the name of the Lord" [Genesis 21:33(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“and there he called on the name of the Lord”. It is good when you reach a point in your life when you see the need to call upon the Lord – to plead for His personal intervention in your case. The circumstance that made Abraham do this arose out of contention he had with Abimelech king of Gerar in whose territory he was staying. It concerned a well that Abimelech’s servants had apparently seized and hindered Abraham’s servants from using.\nA small matter (if you were not involved) but one out of which good came because the two men entered into a treaty at Beersheba and did not allow the incident to spoil their relationship. Best of all\, it made Abraham call upon the Lord with thanksgiving and for His continued presence in the days that lay ahead. We need to emulate him today.

DESCRIPTION:“The eternal God is thy refuge”. An age-old promise with a present day application! Storms of life still rage: failures abound and disappointments are as numerous as ever. Sorrow is on every hand and many seem to have more than their share.\nThis world affords little shelter when hurricanes of life take us by surprise. Apart from the eternal God there is no eternal refuge.\nPause to consider the fabric of this refuge or hiding place. It is so firm it cannot be shaken; so sure that it can be trusted. It will not wear out\, or be overthrown or disappear in time.\nTurn to the Word of God: trust in the Saviour who died to save you and lives to protect and lead you.\nRealise what so many seem to miss altogether. SUMMARY:"supposing that the prisoners had escaped" [Acts 16:27(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“supposing that the prisoners had escaped”. The Philippian jailer all but took his life as a result of this mistaken supposition. It was only the reassuring cry from one of two recently admitted prisoners that they were all there that prevented him from doing so.\nBut God used this near suicide situation to give the jailer the greatest invitation he ever had – that of becoming saved by believing in the Lord Jesus. It happened because the Apostle Paul did not hesitate to grasp the opportunity to tell him in one short sentence all that was necessary.\nApparent catastrophe can be the nearest some get to recognising their need in Christ. Are we clearly grasping the opportunity present by such circumstances and pointing those in need to the Saviour?

SUMMARY:"The man ... had no idea who it was" [John 5:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The man … had no idea who it was”. We find it surprising that the man healed after 38 years suffering had no idea who had healed him. Yet the Lord is working in so many lives and they do not know it!\nMore of us need to set about finding what God is doing in our case. Too many go through life floating with the tide\, albeit an evangelical one\, and with no idea what God has done and is doing with them. It was when the man found out who it was that had healed him that the full purpose of the whole miracle became clear.\nWhen you know the Lord is doing something\, your family\, friends and those who know you will know it\, too.\nOnly when the man found who it was that healed did it have an impact for lasting good. Not merely an idea\, but knowing Jesus as Saviour and Lord is what is needed.

SUMMARY:"rain from heaven\, and fruitful seasons\, filling our hearts with food and gladness" [Acts 14:17]
DESCRIPTION:“rain from heaven\, and fruitful seasons\, filling our hearts with food and gladness”. Rain from heaven falls upon our earth as a blessing from God. Those who have least appreciate this most. Yet God’s blessings are not confined to physical pleasure. Jesus is the bread of life\, those who come to Him do not hunger for anything more. He is the water of life\, those who drink of Him do not thirst for other things.\nPaul and Barnabas\, speaking to those at Lystra who heard the gospel for the first time\, spoke of God’s temporal blessing to turn away attention from themselves and turn them to the Lord.\nHearts filled with food and gladness need to be lifted up in praise to the Lord. Certainly\, times of drought and sorrow fall upon us but let this never be because we failed to count and give thanks for our blessings!

SUMMARY:"the Lord had blessed him in every way" [Genesis 24:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the Lord had blessed him in every way”. All who tread in the footsteps of faithful Abraham should have this testimony. God blesses us more than we can tell\, for so many of His benefits go unnoticed\, and are certainly more than we deserve. We need to recognise more of God’s blessings and to thank Him for them.\nThe way may get harder and the path steeper. New difficulties and obstacles may lie ahead that will call for faith and determination based on our past experience. Abraham’s need at this time was to trust God to provide the wife of His choosing for his son Isaac. The story of Abraham’s servant going forth and finding Rebekah should be an encouragement to all who step out in faith\, for it was a continuation of the past blessing Abraham recognised.

SUMMARY:"In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord" [Psalm 77:2]
DESCRIPTION:“In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord”. One of the good things about trouble is that it makes a man turn to the Lord. Often the deeper the trouble the more likely we will turn to find Him. As long as a man thinks there is some chance he can get himself out of the mess he’s in\, the more likely he is not to trust wholly upon God.\nThe Lord is only really known to those who seek Him. In Him these find true comfort and condolence.\nIs it any surprise that He does not always immediately remedy the situation when delay on His part results in our prolonged discourse and communion with Him? If your day of trouble has introduced you to One who is both helper and solace in One Person\, you’ll not be quick to complain at the calamity that befell you.

SUMMARY:"Sing your song of praise" [Jeremiah 31:7(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Sing your song of praise”. The Jew in the Old Testament and the Christian in the New have a song of praise on their lips. This song uplifts and magnifies the Lord our God. If the Lord loved us enough to die to save us we can be sure that love will extend to keeping us – this is cause for our continual praise. Giving our life to Him is the greatest thing we could do: letting Him lead and guide is the recipe for true happiness – it is worth singing out your praise to the Lord. People all around you or in the darkness of fear and superstition need to hear your song of praise and joy.\nJesus said\, when they criticised the crowds for praising Him\, that if they were silent the very stones would cry out!\nLet it be that whatever else folk pick up from you today it will be your song of joy and praise to the Lord.

SUMMARY:"many women were there" [Matthew 27:55]
DESCRIPTION:“many women were there”. Women played an important part in the Gospel narrative. The place of women in society may have changed but the outstanding fact drawn from our text today is that many women were there when there were few\, if any\, of the twelve disciples. And it may well have been that these devoted women disciples were the only women there – except perhaps servant girls like the one that accused Peter.\nThese women were not just by-standers\, idle and inquisitive: they were followers of Jesus who recognised their calling to minister to the needs of Jesus and His disciples. They were sympathizing\, supporting\, praying and weeping. That is why the Gospel writer mentions them. Not there to make the number up! Their kind is needed in the church today.

SUMMARY:"I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers" [Philemon 4(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers”. It is something to treasure when thoughts of a friend bring a sense of gratitude in your heart. When this happens\, it is likely that this gratitude causes you to pray for God’s blessing to be upon that friend. So it was when Paul thought about Philemon – he thanked God for him.\nThe Christian cannot be isolated. He or she is part of the Body of Christ\, the true family of the Lord. And as in any good family\, we must help one another. We cannot all do everything\, but between us we must get everything done.\nIt is as we show special kindness\, go the extra mile\, forgive those that wrong us\, that a bond of loving gratitude is forged. Let gratitude form the foundation for a lifetime’s fellowship and friendship in the Lord.

SUMMARY:"your sorrow shall be turned into joy" [John 16:20]
DESCRIPTION:“your sorrow shall be turned into joy”. Jesus does not promise His followers exemption from sorrow. He does promise that whatever sorrow they experience will be turned into joy.\nIt is a mistake to assume that if you walked closer to the Lord you would have no cause for sorrow: likewise it is wrong to think that it is God’s will to lift you out of all difficulties and stresses. The Christian is sometimes called to bear more than the average weight of sorrow.\nRemember Jesus’ sorrow as he wept over Jerusalem.\nIf the Children of Israel were bowed down with grief before the Lord led them out of Egypt\, it should come as no surprise for the child of God today to feel the same.\nBut you can see an end to your sorrow – it will be turned to joy.

SUMMARY:"The spirit of Elijah is resting upon Elisha" [II Kings 2:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The spirit of Elijah is resting upon Elisha”. This was how the company of the prophets described the transference of power from one to the other when Elijah was taken up into heaven.\nThese words tell us that God has His chosen vessels ready to fill every vacancy that occurs when a servant of the Lord is called home to glory.\nIn fact\, all who receive the Lord as Saviour are born of the Spirit and are promised the power of the Spirit that will enable them to fill out the role or mantle that falls upon them.\nIt does not matter how great the standard someone may have set before you\, God will give you all you need to do as much and sometimes more than those who have gone before.

SUMMARY:"we are not carrying on a worldly war" [II Corinthians 10:3(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“we are not carrying on a worldly war”. But we are fighting\, all the same. The Christian wrestles with principalities and spiritual forces of evil that are attacking his own life and also hindering the success of his testimony affecting the lives of others.\nThose who hold there is nothing to being a Christian could not be more wrong. A nominal Christian might easily merge into whatever company he finds himself. The true Christian is in the thick of the conflict between good and evil. In the battles he fights and the skirmishes he experiences\, eternal issues are at stake.\nSo the armour he wears\, though invisible\, is very important. Above all he must keep his eye fixed in faith upon his Leader. It’s a spiritual warfare and heavenly records are at stake. There can be no let up.

SUMMARY:"The woman said to him\, 'I know the Messiah is coming' " [John 4:25(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The woman said to him\, ‘I know the Messiah is coming’ “. Until she met Jesus\, the woman in Samaria lived in a ‘one day it will happen’ world. Many are like her today. She knew the Messiah was coming\, but it seemed too far ahead to really affect her. And the very One to Whom she addressed these remarks was the Messiah Himself!\nAre you living in the same frame of mind today? You believe that a lot of things are going to happen but not to you nor in your lifetime. Jesus is not only coming again\, He is here now. His Second Coming will be for those who have met Him already. To know God’s blessing in greater measure might be only a dream; to move into a greater sphere of service seem impossible. Yet if you will reach out in faith to the Lord your dream can become a reality.

SUMMARY:"Sing unto the Lord a new song" [Isaiah 42:10]
DESCRIPTION:“Sing unto the Lord a new song”. You can only do this when you have a new heart\, for the song of the Lord is known only by the children of the Lord. It is the song of the forgiven sinner.\nThe song of praise for what the Lord has done is a refrain known only to the redeemed of the Lord. It was that heaven should be filled with choristers who had washed their garments in His blood that Jesus gave His life.\nIt is when the garment of praise takes the place of the spirit of heaviness that a new song arises from the heart.\nThe Holy Spirit blends every voice in perfect harmony: it is a peal of praise to the Lord who loves His people.\nRepent and believe the gospel: receive His gift of eternal life and sing a new song unto the Lord.

SUMMARY:"they left their images there\, and David and his men carried them away" [II Samuel 5:21(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they left their images there\, and David and his men carried them away”. They ‘burned them’ as the AV says. Some things that are left to you are a snare and a hinderance and this is the best treatment to give them. Anything that detracts you from doing God’s will is not worth storage space. David ‘inherited’ the idols of the Philistines he had just conquered. He very wisely took them away. The most innocent things can become idols when they get between a man and the Lord. It is not so much what it is as the place it occupies.\nThe Lord has created a throne in the heart which He should occupy. If He is denied that rightful place\, whatever else is there becomes idol.
