SUMMARY:"they spoke the word of the Lord to him" [Acts 16:32(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they spoke the word of the Lord to him”. The meal the apostles had with the jailor and his family after their release from prison was not the most important thing. The jailor bathed the apostles’ wounds and necessary though this was\, it was not what mattered most.\nMost important was that they ministered the word of the Lord to the jailor after he had asked how he might be saved.\nAnd in all the activities associated with the Christian faith in our modern world\, it is still the ministry of the Word of God that is of greatest importance.\nFeeding the hungry and tending the sick is a noble calling and one we all have a chance to practice. But bread for the body and healing for the flesh is but an opportunity or opening for the gospel message to be made known.

SUMMARY:"Such knowledge is too wonderful for me" [Psalm 139:6]
DESCRIPTION:“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me”. God knows everything about everybody: nothing is hidden from Him. Every hair on your head is numbered. It is not just detail but knowledge of all that is past\, present and yet to happen. God does not predict the future He determines and sets it.\nGreater still is the truth that with His knowledge comes that great heart of love that a Father has for His children. The way that He reveals Himself to the heart of man giving him the ability to reach out and trust Him is wonderful\, too.\nIt is too great for us to understand but God’s love is not too great for us to respond to and to return: to enlist in His service\, to experience sin forgiven\, peace in our daily life and purpose in all we do. Not understanding is no reason for not believing.

SUMMARY:"Be happy and glad" [Matthew 5:12(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Be happy and glad”. Christ’s desire for His followers is that they should be happy and glad. The cause and quality of this happiness is different from that of the world. Many things in this world make a person happy\, yet it is limited and transient.\nThe followers of Jesus risk insult\, persecution and evil lies about them. Viewed in the light of God’s purposes in Christ\, who also suffered unjustly\, these are indications of a great God-given reward and therefore the cause for great joy.\nAn early example of that joy was Paul and Silas singing praises in the Philippi jail. Modern instances may be seen in the lives of the persecuted church in the twenty-first century. Whether subjected to little or much persecution for Christ – rejoice and be glad.

SUMMARY:"Whatever your hand finds to do" [Ecclesiastes 9:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Whatever your hand finds to do”. We need to be looking for gainful employment. No waiting around hoping something will fall into our lap.\nAnd everyone born anew by the Spirit should ask “What is there for me to do?” One thing is certain\, there must be something. God did not call you out of nature’s darkness into the glorious light of the gospel to be tanned by heaven’s sun!\nAnd when you’ve found that something that you recognise you could do and that no-one else seems to be doing\, do it with all your might.\nWhen you know what needs shifting\, put all your weight into moving it.\nMost vacancies at heaven’s employment bureau call for persons not afraid of hard work!

SUMMARY:"The people of Nineveh believed God's message" [Jonah 3:5(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“The people of Nineveh believed God’s message”. This was the turning point in the salvation of Nineveh – the fact they believed God’s message about impending destruction. The evidence of their belief was that they repented – from the least to the greatest – taking off their regular garments and wearing sackcloth. And God who sees the heart\, saw they had changed their wicked behaviour and did not punish them as He had said.\nNow\, how does it stand with us? We know that as a nation we have departed from God – seeking pleasure and secular achievement rather than godliness. But a nation is made up of individuals and it is individuals who need to hear God’s message\, believe it and act upon it. And we need to do so in every department of our life.

SUMMARY:"Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made" [Luke 10:40(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made”. Any woman devoted to her family can find a lot in the home to distract her from personal prayer and meditation.\nSitting at the feet of Jesus and learning from Him is something that must be included in every true disciple’s daily timetable.\nTake note of the fact that when Jesus passed by\, Bartimaeus cried out for mercy\, the woman with haemorrhage pushed through the crowd to touch Him and Zacchaeus climbed a tree to see Him. By contrast\, Martha was distracted and busy about things that could be done later.\nHer sister Mary sat at Jesus’ feet\, a leper fell at His feet as did the demon-possessed man of the Gerasenes. Resist the distractions and take time to worship today.

SUMMARY:"THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS" [Jeremiah 23:6]
DESCRIPTION:“THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”. Here Jeremiah gives one of the names of Jehovah who was to be Saviour of Israel and of the world. Jehovah – Tsidkenu\, the Lord our Righteousness.\nIsrael was not to be saved by her godliness – rather her departure from the Lord was to prepare for the Redeemer who would save by His own arm: the Lord Jehovah who became righteousness for all who would receive Him.\nRejected by Israel and by mankind in general\, those who repent and turn to Him have found peace with God. Clothed in a new robe of righteousness they find they can boldly approach the throne of God in worship\, prayer and praise.\nCleansed by the blood of the Lamb of God they are clothed by “The Lord Our Righteousness”.

SUMMARY:"Let no-one lose heart" [I Samuel 17:32(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Let no-one lose heart”. Goliath may have been champion of the Philistines but young David was champion both for God’s people and for God’s cause.\nThank God for young ‘Davids’ around today – men (and women) who are prepared to go and fight the giants of evil in the Name of the Lord. What they lack in experience they make up by their enthusiasm and you generally find them in the right place at the right time just as David found himself speaking to the king. While others ‘hum’ and ‘haw’ and hold their committees these are out getting the job done. They might disdain some of the conventional armour but their trust in the Lord is more than enough to fell the giant.\nIt is sad if you thought this kind had died out. Perhaps sadder still if you’re young and not one of them.

SUMMARY:"if we neglect so great salvation" [Hebrews 2:3]
DESCRIPTION:“if we neglect so great salvation”. Neglecting salvation is knowing about it but doing nothing.\nIt is a great salvation because it lifts from the lowest to the highest: great because it is all of grace – offered by God’s unmerited favour and great because it is entirely the work of God Himself.\nTherefore\, it should be no surprise that there is a warning given to those who neglect it. Even hearing about it carries the responsibility to find out more.\nNeglect can be because of unbelief – you do not believe it. It may be disinterest or loss of interest – other things occupy your time. The importance of Christ’s salvation is so great that there is no escaping His wrath if neglected.

SUMMARY:"treasure in heaven" [Luke 18:22]
DESCRIPTION:“treasure in heaven”. The wonder is that more do not see the great opportunity life affords each one to lay up treasure in heaven.\nPeople work hard in the world\, but do little or nothing about spiritual things. They toil in the world’s vineyard yet stand idle in God’s work. They strive for the gates of success in this life and neglect heaven’s gate to eternal life.\nThe ruler to whom Jesus spoke about treasure in heaven had meticulously kept the letter of the law but not known love for God in his heart. His riches were the hindrance.\nPoor in this world’s goods yet having Christ is infinitely better than rich in this world’s eyes without Him. Those who are poor have greater opportunity to lay up treasure in heaven\, because riches can get in the way of doing this.

SUMMARY:"the Lord blessed Obed-edom\, and all his household" [II Samuel 6:11(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the Lord blessed Obed-edom\, and all his household”. The Lord’s children should know the blessing of the Lord in their homes. God’s blessing is something to be shared and felt by all living under the same roof.\nObed-edom’s case illustrates the way in which God’s blessing should be a sign to all who see it or are affected by it. Uzzah had incurred God’s wrath by steadying the ark on the new cart that had been made. As a result the Israelites\, David included\, wondered what judgment to expect next. The way God blessed the house of Obed-edom where the ark of the covenant had been hurriedly taken indicated that the Lord wanted to bless rather than punish His people.\nThe home that today enjoys the blessing of the Lord says the same thing.

SUMMARY:"you have cast all my sins behind your back" [Isaiah 38:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you have cast all my sins behind your back”. From these words it seems that Hezekiah recognised it was his sins that had made his house disorderly and caused God to issue an ultimatum to him. He further recognised that when he repented of his sin God had cast these transgressions away and given him a new start.\nThe same truth holds today. Once you have God’s forgiveness for what you’ve done\, those deeds will never be brought up again. It is this that makes the forgiveness the Lord gives so wonderful. He gives a new lease of life totally free from the hang-ups of yesterday\, plus divine strength to go and sin no more. This blessed truth is yours if you will take it.\n‘Behind your back’ means out of sight whichever way you turn!

SUMMARY:"and I don't know" [John 20:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“and I don’t know”. Never hesitate to use these words. Mary uttered them on one of the greatest occasions in history and certainly the most amazing days in her life. They relate to Mary’s search for Jesus on finding the tomb empty.\nWhen you don’t know\, say so! Pretending to know gets nowhere. It is spiritual blindness when you think it is unnecessary to seek the Lord.\nJesus said that those that seek find. Mary’s request to the two angels in the otherwise empty tomb bears out this truth.\nWhenever it is in life’s way that you are lost\, the sensible thing is to ask the way. More so in your spiritual journey. You can ask others but ever remember that Jesus is alive\, pray to Him when you don’t know.

SUMMARY:"God has revealed them to us through his Spirit" [I Corinthians 2:10(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“God has revealed them to us through his Spirit”. The Apostle Paul writes about the hidden wisdom of God – something that the rulers and nobility of this world knew nothing of\, or they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. In another passage he tells us that not many wise or mighty are called but that God has chosen the weak things of this world – ‘the nobodies’ as we might say – to display His love and salvation.\nAll this is the unseen ministry of the Holy Spirit. He it is who leads us into all truth. And because the Spirit presents Jesus throughout the world\, His ministry is reaching and felt by believers everywhere.\nJesus said He would pray the Father to send the Holy Spirit. We must pray for the Spirit’s revelation in all things.

SUMMARY:"You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God" [Deuteronomy 4:35(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You were shown these things so that you might know that the Lord is God”. What has God been doing with you all these years? Fed and clothed you while others wasted away? Given you health while others suffered? Protected you while others were exposed to all kinds of adversity? Moses reminded the Children of Israel of all that the Lord had done for them and reminded them of the responsibility this brought.\nGod works in our lives today\, as in His People long ago\, to show us that He is the Lord and it is Him we should serve.\nEvery lesson in the Christian’s pathway is to draw him or her nearer to the Lord\, to behold the beauty of Jesus and to live out His love and grace to those around.\nThere’s plenty of need to do that where you are\, so know and let it be known that the Lord is God.

DESCRIPTION:“at home in the body”. The body is a comfortable home for some\, for others it is racked with pain or disabled with infirmity. For all who love the Lord and look for His appearing there should be the knowledge that this home is temporary. Don’t get too comfortable or the Lord may put a thorn in the nest!\nIf you realise this present body is preventing you from being present with the Lord you will do all you can to fill your time down here profitably so that you have something to show when He comes or calls.\nIf the Lord asked\, “What have you been doing while I was absent?” what would you say?\nThe answer to that probably determines how excited and overjoyed you will be to see Him!

SUMMARY:"out of his heart will flow rivers of living water" [John 7:38 (RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“out of his heart will flow rivers of living water”. The spiritual heart is the innermost being of a person. Faith in Christ – accepting Jesus and believing He is all He promises to be to you – makes a change within.\nBecoming a Christian is not applying a truth to the surface and allowing it to sink in. It is a radical heart change: it is the heart that is evil and the heart that the gospel puts right.\nJesus invites those who are thirsty – soul thirsty – to come to Him and drink. The first drink opens up a satisfying and eternal river of water from within and it is a stream replenished by the Holy Spirit.\nFollowers of Jesus can make the mistake of looking from without for that which the Lord would supply from within.\nStreams of living water from the heart must in time reach the furthermost extremity of the life.

SUMMARY:"he was wounded for our transgressions" [Isaiah 53:5]
DESCRIPTION:“he was wounded for our transgressions”. The scourging and beating\, the torturous march carrying the Cross\, the crucifixion and painful death are known to us all. Yet not all by any means recognise or accept that Jesus was wounded for their transgressions.\nIt was my sin that impaled the Son of God to the Cross. It was that I might be made whole spiritually that His body was broken.\nFor Christ’s work to mean anything to me I must recognise that I have transgressed God’s law. The evidence I see for this is in the sentence of death all around me. But His death\, the just for the unjust\, enables all who will trust Him to be brought back to God.\nWithout Christ’s suffering and death\, all the world would need to perish. But now He who believes shall not perish but have everlasting life.

SUMMARY:"Be not afraid or dismayed by reason of this great multitude" [II Chronicles 20:15]
DESCRIPTION:“Be not afraid or dismayed by reason of this great multitude”. The follower of the Lord must not be daunted by the size of the opposition. This is the lesson Jehoshaphat sought to teach Judah as they went out to meet the opposing forces.\nMore important than the number of the enemy is that you should know God’s promise. This is more than wishful thinking. Faith and trust in the promises of God are engendered by a daily walk with Him and one that is not interrupted by waywardness and compromise.\nIf the relationship is in order\, faith and trust follow naturally\, they are no longer out of reach. True love casts out fear – in that environment there is no problem. It is the assurance of His Word to us and His Presence with us we need. With these\, the size of the multitude no longer matters.

SUMMARY:"he called her to him" [Luke 13:12]
DESCRIPTION:“he called her to him”. She may never have dared to approach Jesus herself: the nature of her infirmity caused her to be judged unwholesome. However\, she was found in the synagogue and probably had desires for godliness at least equal to other worshippers.\nHer condition – a curved spine – attracted the attention of Jesus and made Him want to do something for her.\nJesus knew her thoughts and did not need to ask what she wanted\, but just told her she was to be healed\, laid His hands upon her and she was made straight.\nJesus knows about us and His invitation to us all is to come to Him. Like this woman in the synagogue\, when we come\, we express our need and accept His healing.

SUMMARY:"he brings them out of their distresses" [Psalm 107:28(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he brings them out of their distresses”. Nowhere does the Word of God try to minimise the distress that men bring upon themselves. Usually as a result of unbelief or distrust\, the heart finds itself carried to a place where no way out can be found.\nThe Lord has a gracious way of taking His children by the hand and leading them out of the deepest valley.\nThose who cry to the Lord in their trouble may expect deliverance. But having cried they need to look for it. He leads: they must follow.\nIt is not a case of taking deep breaths and trying to calm down: not even telling yourself not to worry (often an impossibility when distress is genuine). It is crying to the Lord and looking for the answer. Tears of self-pity can blind you to the way He is leading you.

SUMMARY:"faith comes by hearing" [Romans 10:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“faith comes by hearing”. This shows the need to proclaim or make known the gospel if folk are to believe.\nThe heart is touched when the gospel is preached. There is a reaction – either to accept or reject. Acceptance means that the hearer believes and places their faith in it. They are able to say\, “I believe it.”\nThe mind may make the first decision but it must be conveyed to the heart. The Bible is quite clear on this point. Saving faith is more than mental assent. With the heart man believes unto righteousness. Emotion is involved: love\, gratitude\, amazement are feelings that may be involved. Pray that those who hear the gospel may believe: without this faith there is no salvation.

SUMMARY:"What good will it be …? " [Matthew 16:26(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“What good will it be …? “. Jesus speaks to us all. What good will all that you are doing today be when the final tally is taken?\nThere is so much of eternal value we can do in following truth and justice\, relieving the oppressed and helping our brother in need. Sadly\, much time is spent either in aimless pleasure or straining to obtain this world’s wealth or honour.\nHow will this day advance the progress of your soul – that real “you” that continues when this world’s life ends? “Profit the whole world and lose your own soul” is the way Jesus put it. The most ordinary task can become God’s service when we listen and obey His voice. And if you are living a life where you can in no way serve and honour the Lord\, it is no good. Get out of it!

SUMMARY:"but her husband Manoah was not with her" [Judges 13:9 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“but her husband Manoah was not with her”. Manoah’s wife could be trusted. This was the second time that the angel of the Lord had appeared to her without her husband present but she was entrusted with the news of what was to come. Given that she was unable to have children\, the news of her imminent pregnancy could have sounded far-fetched to Manoah. But his confidence in his wife is seen by his willing response and as a result they both shared in the special responsibility God gave them.\nThe Lord hasn’t changed and is still revealing himself to those ‘out in the field’. Irrespective of our position\, gender or age\, the Lord is looking for those who can be trusted and those who will be obedient to what they are asked to do. [AP]

SUMMARY:"Is there not a warfare to man upon the earth? " [Job 7:1(margin)]
DESCRIPTION:“Is there not a warfare to man upon the earth? “. Life is not easy\, or it might be better to say that those who have things easy do not get very far in this life.\nOne translation of this verse says that life is like forced army service. We are certainly conscripted into it and thrown into situations we would not choose. But a higher power than ours is at work. Those\, like Job\, whose trust is in the Lord know He is aware of their state and only allows things to happen for their good. We cannot escape problems and remain in life. We must face what is before us. Neither should we minimise our problems or sweep trouble under the carpet. Rather we should sympathize one with another.\nWe can all triumph in Christ\, whatever our situation and allowing the Lord into every area of our life is the key to comfort and peace in all our trials.

SUMMARY:"men ought always to pray\, and not to faint" [Luke 18:1]
DESCRIPTION:“men ought always to pray\, and not to faint”. Prayer\, an antidote to fainting\, brings relief as follows:\nFirst\, by the knowledge that there is an Advocate who will attend to one’s need. Secondly\, that any who are overwhelmed are invited\, indeed\, welcomed\, to take advantage of this offer. Thirdly\, as a result of prayer\, either additional inner strength is imparted or the load lightened or the problem removed altogether.\nActually\, ‘fainting’ includes inadvertently opting out of one’s responsibility\, or inability to face life\, yet it is only transient and on ‘coming round’ life has to be faced again. Much better to solve the problem than ‘chicken out’ only to be dragged back later. Once you have grasped the reality of the invitation\, you keep coming to the Lord in prayer until an answer is received – just as the widow did to the unjust judge in Jesus’ parable.

SUMMARY:"But now bring me a harpist" [II Kings 3:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But now bring me a harpist”. Several times in the Bible we find an instrumentalist playing to soothe or inspire the troubled mind. In this case Elisha was disturbed to face the evil king of Israel who had come for advice along with the king of Judah.\nIn the early days of his employment in the court of the king\, the young David played the harp to soothe the evil spirit that came upon Saul – though not always with success\, for on one occasion when he was playing\, Saul threw his spear and tried to pin him to the wall.\nThe important thing is that God uses music to bring blessing and uplift to the hearer. And it was a sad day when the harpists among the captives in Babylon hung their harps on the willow branches and ceased to play.

SUMMARY:"Behold\, I am here\, Lord" [Acts 9:10]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, I am here\, Lord”. It was as though Ananias was just waiting for the Lord to give him instructions. It would come as no surprise that the Lord spoke to him by a vision. We wonder whether he would have been so ready to be told if he had known he was to be sent to the arch enemy of the Christians – Saul of Tarsus. In the event\, he was very glad that he did go and become the first to contact one who became the Apostle Paul. There is always joy in doing what God tells us.\nHis instructions often seem impossible\, sometimes dangerous and at times opposite to what we would expect.\nBut once we are certain it is the Lord\, while obedience may call for courage\, it brings us a sense of achievement and blessing and help to others. ‘Here I am Lord’\, should be the disciple’s ‘stock in trade’.

SUMMARY:"Why do we need any more testimony? " [Luke 22:71(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Why do we need any more testimony? “. If power is in the hands of those whose minds are made up\, no further evidence is needed. The elders of the people\, the chief priests and the scribes\, decided that Jesus of Nazareth was safe enough in their custody for some sort of case to be fabricated against Him.\nNow they sought to incite the crowd to give them a mandate to seal their heinous crime in taking the case to Pilate the governor and demanding the death sentence. How could human injustice sink so low? Has man no love for his brother? These questions should be being asked today. But\, out of the shame of the crucifixion of the Son of God has arisen a great tidal wave of testimony and evidence from those who have believed. Their testimony is that truly this is the Son of God.
