SUMMARY:"he called her to him" [Luke 13:12]
DESCRIPTION:“he called her to him”. She may never have dared to approach Jesus herself: the nature of her infirmity caused her to be judged unwholesome. However\, she was found in the synagogue and probably had desires for godliness at least equal to other worshippers.\nHer condition – a curved spine – attracted the attention of Jesus and made Him want to do something for her.\nJesus knew her thoughts and did not need to ask what she wanted\, but just told her she was to be healed\, laid His hands upon her and she was made straight.\nJesus knows about us and His invitation to us all is to come to Him. Like this woman in the synagogue\, when we come\, we express our need and accept His healing.

SUMMARY:"he brings them out of their distresses" [Psalm 107:28(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he brings them out of their distresses”. Nowhere does the Word of God try to minimise the distress that men bring upon themselves. Usually as a result of unbelief or distrust\, the heart finds itself carried to a place where no way out can be found.\nThe Lord has a gracious way of taking His children by the hand and leading them out of the deepest valley.\nThose who cry to the Lord in their trouble may expect deliverance. But having cried they need to look for it. He leads: they must follow.\nIt is not a case of taking deep breaths and trying to calm down: not even telling yourself not to worry (often an impossibility when distress is genuine). It is crying to the Lord and looking for the answer. Tears of self-pity can blind you to the way He is leading you.

SUMMARY:"faith comes by hearing" [Romans 10:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“faith comes by hearing”. This shows the need to proclaim or make known the gospel if folk are to believe.\nThe heart is touched when the gospel is preached. There is a reaction – either to accept or reject. Acceptance means that the hearer believes and places their faith in it. They are able to say\, “I believe it.”\nThe mind may make the first decision but it must be conveyed to the heart. The Bible is quite clear on this point. Saving faith is more than mental assent. With the heart man believes unto righteousness. Emotion is involved: love\, gratitude\, amazement are feelings that may be involved. Pray that those who hear the gospel may believe: without this faith there is no salvation.

SUMMARY:"What good will it be …? " [Matthew 16:26(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“What good will it be …? “. Jesus speaks to us all. What good will all that you are doing today be when the final tally is taken?\nThere is so much of eternal value we can do in following truth and justice\, relieving the oppressed and helping our brother in need. Sadly\, much time is spent either in aimless pleasure or straining to obtain this world’s wealth or honour.\nHow will this day advance the progress of your soul – that real “you” that continues when this world’s life ends? “Profit the whole world and lose your own soul” is the way Jesus put it. The most ordinary task can become God’s service when we listen and obey His voice. And if you are living a life where you can in no way serve and honour the Lord\, it is no good. Get out of it!

SUMMARY:"but her husband Manoah was not with her" [Judges 13:9 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“but her husband Manoah was not with her”. Manoah’s wife could be trusted. This was the second time that the angel of the Lord had appeared to her without her husband present but she was entrusted with the news of what was to come. Given that she was unable to have children\, the news of her imminent pregnancy could have sounded far-fetched to Manoah. But his confidence in his wife is seen by his willing response and as a result they both shared in the special responsibility God gave them.\nThe Lord hasn’t changed and is still revealing himself to those ‘out in the field’. Irrespective of our position\, gender or age\, the Lord is looking for those who can be trusted and those who will be obedient to what they are asked to do. [AP]

SUMMARY:"Is there not a warfare to man upon the earth? " [Job 7:1(margin)]
DESCRIPTION:“Is there not a warfare to man upon the earth? “. Life is not easy\, or it might be better to say that those who have things easy do not get very far in this life.\nOne translation of this verse says that life is like forced army service. We are certainly conscripted into it and thrown into situations we would not choose. But a higher power than ours is at work. Those\, like Job\, whose trust is in the Lord know He is aware of their state and only allows things to happen for their good. We cannot escape problems and remain in life. We must face what is before us. Neither should we minimise our problems or sweep trouble under the carpet. Rather we should sympathize one with another.\nWe can all triumph in Christ\, whatever our situation and allowing the Lord into every area of our life is the key to comfort and peace in all our trials.

SUMMARY:"men ought always to pray\, and not to faint" [Luke 18:1]
DESCRIPTION:“men ought always to pray\, and not to faint”. Prayer\, an antidote to fainting\, brings relief as follows:\nFirst\, by the knowledge that there is an Advocate who will attend to one’s need. Secondly\, that any who are overwhelmed are invited\, indeed\, welcomed\, to take advantage of this offer. Thirdly\, as a result of prayer\, either additional inner strength is imparted or the load lightened or the problem removed altogether.\nActually\, ‘fainting’ includes inadvertently opting out of one’s responsibility\, or inability to face life\, yet it is only transient and on ‘coming round’ life has to be faced again. Much better to solve the problem than ‘chicken out’ only to be dragged back later. Once you have grasped the reality of the invitation\, you keep coming to the Lord in prayer until an answer is received – just as the widow did to the unjust judge in Jesus’ parable.

SUMMARY:"But now bring me a harpist" [II Kings 3:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But now bring me a harpist”. Several times in the Bible we find an instrumentalist playing to soothe or inspire the troubled mind. In this case Elisha was disturbed to face the evil king of Israel who had come for advice along with the king of Judah.\nIn the early days of his employment in the court of the king\, the young David played the harp to soothe the evil spirit that came upon Saul – though not always with success\, for on one occasion when he was playing\, Saul threw his spear and tried to pin him to the wall.\nThe important thing is that God uses music to bring blessing and uplift to the hearer. And it was a sad day when the harpists among the captives in Babylon hung their harps on the willow branches and ceased to play.

SUMMARY:"Behold\, I am here\, Lord" [Acts 9:10]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, I am here\, Lord”. It was as though Ananias was just waiting for the Lord to give him instructions. It would come as no surprise that the Lord spoke to him by a vision. We wonder whether he would have been so ready to be told if he had known he was to be sent to the arch enemy of the Christians – Saul of Tarsus. In the event\, he was very glad that he did go and become the first to contact one who became the Apostle Paul. There is always joy in doing what God tells us.\nHis instructions often seem impossible\, sometimes dangerous and at times opposite to what we would expect.\nBut once we are certain it is the Lord\, while obedience may call for courage\, it brings us a sense of achievement and blessing and help to others. ‘Here I am Lord’\, should be the disciple’s ‘stock in trade’.

SUMMARY:"Why do we need any more testimony? " [Luke 22:71(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Why do we need any more testimony? “. If power is in the hands of those whose minds are made up\, no further evidence is needed. The elders of the people\, the chief priests and the scribes\, decided that Jesus of Nazareth was safe enough in their custody for some sort of case to be fabricated against Him.\nNow they sought to incite the crowd to give them a mandate to seal their heinous crime in taking the case to Pilate the governor and demanding the death sentence. How could human injustice sink so low? Has man no love for his brother? These questions should be being asked today. But\, out of the shame of the crucifixion of the Son of God has arisen a great tidal wave of testimony and evidence from those who have believed. Their testimony is that truly this is the Son of God.

SUMMARY:"to be rich in good deeds" [I Timothy 6:18(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“to be rich in good deeds”. Paul has been playing on the word ‘rich’\, speaking of the uncertainty of worldly riches compared with the eternal reward that comes from a rich and generous spirit. Good deeds will be the evidence of a generous heart.\nThis is not a one-off action done out of guilt or on a whim\, but it is a life that is given over to showing goodness to others just as Christ has shown His goodness to us. We may not have much money in the bank\, but we can all be rich in good deeds.\nSpending time in serving others is as good an investment as we will ever make. It’s not an option for the follower of Christ\, but a command. Let us be obedient today as opportunities come our way. [AP]

SUMMARY:"they do not ask the Lord for guidance. This is why they have failed" [Jeremiah 10:21(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“they do not ask the Lord for guidance. This is why they have failed”. The Lord is ready to answer all who will call upon Him and give guidance at every crossroads in life. Those who love and serve Him could have no greater Saviour\, Lord and Friend. It is sad when those who could know His blessing and who know the way to the throne of grace do not take what God has for them. The failure that Jeremiah described was the scattering of God’s People Israel. The failure we see today is in defeated Christians who in their folly have gone astray.\nYet He is a God who mends broken pieces\, turns failure into success and makes the plaintive cry into a song of joy. The first step may be the one back to the Lord and then to resolve by His grace to accept His Lordship and guidance.

SUMMARY:"he blessed them" [Luke 9:16]
DESCRIPTION:“he blessed them”. If the Son of God gave thanks\, should not we? Many of us might have thought it unnecessary to give thanks for so small a meal. The food was distributed only after the Lord had blessed it. It is the blessing of the Lord that makes rich and multiplies what we do. People need to receive what God has blessed. God’s blessing ensures no harm will befall or calamity overtake that will do them no good. The blessing of God is like an anointing of God that protects us in danger and gives us peace. It is like a table of good things laid and ready to partake when in the midst of our enemies.\nMay the “he blessed them” become “he blessed me” in your experience today.

SUMMARY:"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" [Psalm 111:10]
DESCRIPTION:“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. Many years ago I heard a man pray\, ‘I thank you God you are my pal’. I’ve often wondered where that man is now! If the Almighty is your ‘pal’ you will need someone greater to see you through the rigours of life.\nIf the Lord is merely a Name that thrills you as you sing worship songs\, you’ll find your need of more when the music stops.\nIf the Lord is just a benign heavenly father who gives what you pray for\, much as you get a bar of chocolate from a vending machine\, you haven’t begun to understand the path of discipleship. We sometimes do mistake the Lord for one of us. His Name is the theme of the songs that lift our spirits in worship and adoration. The Lord does answer prayer\, even while we’re asking. But He is the Lord God Almighty. Angels and archangels bow in His presence. How much more should we!

SUMMARY:"Take up your son" [II Kings 4:36(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Take up your son”. This was the son whom God had given this woman in answer to Elisha’s prayer and yet who had died as she nursed him when he was carried home sick from the fields.\nThat devastating experience made her angry that the prophet had deceived her – giving her a son to take him away again. She thought she had lost him.\nYet by his return from the dead she had a double miracle – born when past child-bearing age and back from the dead.\nThis latest experience caused her to call upon the prophet – her way of calling upon the Lord.\nIt doesn’t often happen exactly this way\, but the experience is the same. God appears to deny us what He promised that He might draw us to Himself\, and we receive more than we ever thought possible.

SUMMARY:"making melody in your heart" [Ephesians 5:19]
DESCRIPTION:“making melody in your heart”. The song of the Lord is not to be compared with the jingle of an empty spirit. The well that Jesus promised would spring into ever-lasting life bubbles forth with joy and gladness. Even in its minor tones the song of the Lord has a blessedness all of its own.\nThe Spirit witnesses with our spirit that we are born of God and this must express itself in the heavenly melody.\nThere are many verses to the heavenly hymn\, but all exalt the Lord Jesus. The refrain is one that angels cannot repeat for they have never fallen and been restored by His mercy and grace.\n‘Making melody’ suggests there may be times when you don’t really feel like it\, but you do. Well worth trying for praise is infectious when the song of the Lord begins.

DESCRIPTION:“Pilate marvelled”. So did the crowd that witnessed His miracles but later supported the cry ‘away with him\, we demand the release of Barabbas’. I think Herod marvelled too when he heard how the wise men had been led by a star\, but he engineered to destroy the baby born to be King. The inhabitants of Gadara marvelled at the way Jesus healed the demoniac and their pigs were drowned\, yet they asked Him to leave their part of the country.\nFascination\, captivation\, interest are not enough\, though they can become steps toward the important act of commitment and trust. Pilate marvelled and then gave orders for Jesus to be crucified. Thank God not all are like that. Peter marvelled at a miraculous catch of fishes and then left all and followed Jesus. We need to do more than marvel.

SUMMARY:"Who can understand the human heart? " [Jeremiah 17:9(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Who can understand the human heart? “. The prophet says that there is nothing else so deceitful as the human heart: it is too sick to be healed. We can find instances on every hand to support this. Because deceitful\, it is unpredictable and is involved in all kinds of intrigue.\nYet while the human heart cannot be healed (the prophet is referring to the spiritual heart\, of course) it can be replaced. This has happened in the lives of all who have received Christ. God’s offer of eternal life includes a new\, clean\, God-like heart.\nThe positive answer to Jeremiah’s question is that God can understand the human heart. And any who have heart trouble – spiritual problems – should go to the Lord. Describe to Him the condition as accurately as you can\, then ask Him to deal with it.

SUMMARY:"when I was brought low\, he saved me" [Psalm 116:6(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“when I was brought low\, he saved me”. All have the experience of being brought low sometime in life. If not outwardly\, yet within we feel very rotten and low because of our failure or the failure of the world around us. But being brought low gives us the opportunity for the Lord to lift us up. This is so both physically\, mentally and spiritually.\nSometimes if we would humble ourselves it would save the need for us to be brought low. But whatever the reason we are brought low\, the Lord uplifts the lowly. The Psalmist testified that the Lord saved him. Those who hit rock bottom can feel they will never rise again. But He saves them from their fears as well as from the persecution of others.\nNo fear in being brought low when I know the Lord will save me and place my feet upon a firm rock.

DESCRIPTION:“faith in his name”. God the Father has highly exalted His Son Jesus and given Him a Name that is above every other. At that Name all creation will one day bow: in that Name now the followers of the Lord have great promises.\nFaith in His Name is essentially believing that what God says He will do\, what He promises He will fulfil.\nFaith in His Name meets man’s deepest need even when there is no knowing exactly what the need is. Faith laughs at impossibilities because God’s ways are not man’s ways. He knows a way around\, over or through an obstacle when we can see none. Faith in the Name of Jesus healed the life-long cripple whom Peter and John stumbled across in the Temple Gate. Faith in His Name will bring deliverance to you today if you commit your way unto the Lord.

SUMMARY:"many … wept … and many shouted aloud for joy" [Ezra 3:12]
DESCRIPTION:“many … wept … and many shouted aloud for joy”. So you could not distinguish between the crying and shouting for joy as those returned from exile completed the laying of the foundation. Life is often like that! The same event can conjure either feeling in the heart. The one weeps as he remembers the former glory and the days that have been lost\, the other is taken up with the new prospect the same event opens for them.\nSome of you may be enduring nights of weeping just now. Those tears may add to the beauty of the Lord who Himself was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.\nFor some it is a time of exultant gladness – springtime in the heart\, the singing of birds and a rejoicing at the goodness God has given you. Both shouts of joy and tears may ascend as melody to the Lord.

SUMMARY:"This is the work of God\, that you believe in him whom he sent" [John 6:29(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“This is the work of God\, that you believe in him whom he sent”. Jesus had told His hearers they should not labour for the food which perishes – labouring for feeding this life to the exclusion of labouring for everlasting life.\nThey then asked Him what they needed to do that they may work the works of God. Did they recognise that God’s work is wrought through human agency? The answer Jesus gave them is one that should challenge us. Have we put our trust in Jesus\, the One whom God has sent? Not merely do we belong to a Christian group or try to put the teaching of Jesus into practice\, and so on\, but do we believe in Him? Trusting Him to save us and cleanse us\, to commission and to equip us – this involves a definite act of asking Him and then admitting Him into our life.

SUMMARY:"Behold\, bless the Lord\, all you servants of the Lord" [Psalm 134:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, bless the Lord\, all you servants of the Lord”. The servants of the Lord are called to bless or worship the Lord. Those about whom the Psalmist was writing were expected to readily do this. Rather\, their calling to serve in the house of the Lord was a great honour. It delighted their heart: they sang and worshipped as they waited or served in the Lord’s house.\nSome of Christ’s service is difficult and can be dangerous. It may call for every ounce of strength you have.\nYet\, whatever it is and wherever your lot is cast\, you may bless the Lord in the activity (or inactivity as happens to some) of the day.\nOn the darkest day\, in the tightest situation\, lift your heart up to Him. Lift your eye of faith heavenward and bless the Lord.

SUMMARY:"there are many adversaries" [I Corinthians 16:9]
DESCRIPTION:“there are many adversaries”. This is the second half of Paul’s statement that a great and effectual door has been opened for him. We think of great doors opening to great opportunities and blessings and so they do. But with every blessing there will be a collection of stumbling blocks and temptations and a host of adversaries.\nThe Christian’s conflict is no easy battle: victory is assured in the Name of our Mighty Conqueror Jesus but it is not a walk over. It calls for diligent prayer and the wearing of the whole armour of God. The shield of faith must be in place as you move forward into the large place to which your open door of opportunity leads.\nAnd remember to enlist the prayer support of any who cannot accompany you.

SUMMARY:"You are talking like a foolish woman" [Job 2:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You are talking like a foolish woman”. Job is not suggesting it is only women who are foolish! He is chastening his wife for her thoughtless suggestion that he ‘curse God and die’. Such words show a lack of moral judgment or respect for a righteous God. As Job points out\, ‘Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?’\nDiscipleship is not conditional on an easy life. All too often\, when things go well our attention can be drawn away from the Lord. During hard times our experience of the Lord can become much deeper. When we walk through the valley of darkness\, the Lord our Shepherd walks with us.\nThe promise of eternal life is for those who persevere and don’t give up. Let’s not be distracted by those who want an easy life. [AP]

SUMMARY:"But who do you say that I am? " [Mark 8:29(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But who do you say that I am? “. When we have examined all the evidence\, listened to all the opinions\, noted the behaviour of everyone we meet\, the need is for us to decide. Jesus listened to the disciples tell of the various things others had said about Him\, but the question that mattered was what did His own disciples think.\nThe modern media tries to decide for us the best place to go\, clothes to wear\, attitude to adopt and calling to follow. Every advertisement is attempting to steer us in a certain direction. It can be confusing\, we wonder what to decide.\nBut in relation to the Person of Christ we each must decide for himself or herself. Peter said\, ‘You are the Christ’ and all who make that confession acknowledge Jesus as Lord and joyfully submit to His will.

SUMMARY:"this house was finished" [Ezra 6:15]
DESCRIPTION:“this house was finished”. The temple of the Lord was completed in spite of all the opposition and hindrance the returned exiles had faced. The workers had been made to stop and when at last the dispute was resolved and a new command to build received from Darius\, the workers began to work with great speed. They had no time to lose: who could tell but the king’s instruction would be reversed again!\nBy God’s grace your house will be finished – the life that you have been given to build will be complete and added with many others to God’s glory. Yet you need to put your mind to the task in hand. The bricks don’t fall into place. God who has called you will equip and strengthen you. Get on with God’s work in your life today.

SUMMARY:"study to be quiet" [I Thessalonians 4:11]
DESCRIPTION:“study to be quiet”. Being quiet does not come naturally to most of us – not for any length of time anyway! It calls for application or study to perform the exercise.\nOur desire must not be to be known for our much speaking.\nAnd we do not want to meddle in other’s affairs – a condition that usually indicates we neglect our own.\nSome think that noise hides reality – like the loud music that deafens some ears – or will cover weakness in our argument – like the speaker who inserted in his notes “shout here; argument weak!”\nFor some time each day we need to be still and quietly wait upon the Lord. This is something that the world at large misses\, but we must cultivate the habit if Christ would fill us with His grace.

SUMMARY:"yet in my flesh shall I see God" [Job 19:26]
DESCRIPTION:“yet in my flesh shall I see God”. Job was a firm believer in the resurrection. He knew that once he was in the grave\, decay would set in and soon only bones be left. Yet he speaks of seeing God in his flesh. His hope was of a resurrection body in which he would see God – something mortal man cannot do. Many years later\, the Apostle Paul\, explaining the resurrection body said that mortality must put on immortality. This world is to see a resurrection of all who have died. Jesus said that all who are in the graves would hear the voice of the Son of God.\nThere must be a judgment to right the injustices of this life. Jesus said those who had done evil would know a resurrection of damnation. Job’s faith in God held firm in the midst of the greatest testing. His hope was resurrection to eternal life. All who love God share in it.

SUMMARY:"other foundation can no man lay" [I Corinthians 3:11]
DESCRIPTION:“other foundation can no man lay”. Many do try to lay down their own foundation and the building they erect upon it goes up rapidly. But the testings of life soon show that what was thought to be rock-bed is sand.\nJesus Christ is the only foundation upon which life can be built. Because He is always the same and does not change\, the precepts laid down by His apostles and prophets hold good today. The written Word of God is relevant because it meets man’s deepest need. They make a grave error who try to alter that foundation.\nWithout a building that will last\, life is but a sham. The only way to build for eternity is to build upon the finished work of Christ on the Cross of Calvary as Saviour of all who will believe. Have no dealings with imitators and innovators. Build with durable material on the foundation God has provided.
