SUMMARY:"many … wept … and many shouted aloud for joy" [Ezra 3:12]
DESCRIPTION:“many … wept … and many shouted aloud for joy”. So you could not distinguish between the crying and shouting for joy as those returned from exile completed the laying of the foundation. Life is often like that! The same event can conjure either feeling in the heart. The one weeps as he remembers the former glory and the days that have been lost\, the other is taken up with the new prospect the same event opens for them.\nSome of you may be enduring nights of weeping just now. Those tears may add to the beauty of the Lord who Himself was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.\nFor some it is a time of exultant gladness – springtime in the heart\, the singing of birds and a rejoicing at the goodness God has given you. Both shouts of joy and tears may ascend as melody to the Lord.

SUMMARY:"This is the work of God\, that you believe in him whom he sent" [John 6:29(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“This is the work of God\, that you believe in him whom he sent”. Jesus had told His hearers they should not labour for the food which perishes – labouring for feeding this life to the exclusion of labouring for everlasting life.\nThey then asked Him what they needed to do that they may work the works of God. Did they recognise that God’s work is wrought through human agency? The answer Jesus gave them is one that should challenge us. Have we put our trust in Jesus\, the One whom God has sent? Not merely do we belong to a Christian group or try to put the teaching of Jesus into practice\, and so on\, but do we believe in Him? Trusting Him to save us and cleanse us\, to commission and to equip us – this involves a definite act of asking Him and then admitting Him into our life.

SUMMARY:"Behold\, bless the Lord\, all you servants of the Lord" [Psalm 134:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, bless the Lord\, all you servants of the Lord”. The servants of the Lord are called to bless or worship the Lord. Those about whom the Psalmist was writing were expected to readily do this. Rather\, their calling to serve in the house of the Lord was a great honour. It delighted their heart: they sang and worshipped as they waited or served in the Lord’s house.\nSome of Christ’s service is difficult and can be dangerous. It may call for every ounce of strength you have.\nYet\, whatever it is and wherever your lot is cast\, you may bless the Lord in the activity (or inactivity as happens to some) of the day.\nOn the darkest day\, in the tightest situation\, lift your heart up to Him. Lift your eye of faith heavenward and bless the Lord.

SUMMARY:"there are many adversaries" [I Corinthians 16:9]
DESCRIPTION:“there are many adversaries”. This is the second half of Paul’s statement that a great and effectual door has been opened for him. We think of great doors opening to great opportunities and blessings and so they do. But with every blessing there will be a collection of stumbling blocks and temptations and a host of adversaries.\nThe Christian’s conflict is no easy battle: victory is assured in the Name of our Mighty Conqueror Jesus but it is not a walk over. It calls for diligent prayer and the wearing of the whole armour of God. The shield of faith must be in place as you move forward into the large place to which your open door of opportunity leads.\nAnd remember to enlist the prayer support of any who cannot accompany you.

SUMMARY:"You are talking like a foolish woman" [Job 2:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You are talking like a foolish woman”. Job is not suggesting it is only women who are foolish! He is chastening his wife for her thoughtless suggestion that he ‘curse God and die’. Such words show a lack of moral judgment or respect for a righteous God. As Job points out\, ‘Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?’\nDiscipleship is not conditional on an easy life. All too often\, when things go well our attention can be drawn away from the Lord. During hard times our experience of the Lord can become much deeper. When we walk through the valley of darkness\, the Lord our Shepherd walks with us.\nThe promise of eternal life is for those who persevere and don’t give up. Let’s not be distracted by those who want an easy life. [AP]

SUMMARY:"But who do you say that I am? " [Mark 8:29(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But who do you say that I am? “. When we have examined all the evidence\, listened to all the opinions\, noted the behaviour of everyone we meet\, the need is for us to decide. Jesus listened to the disciples tell of the various things others had said about Him\, but the question that mattered was what did His own disciples think.\nThe modern media tries to decide for us the best place to go\, clothes to wear\, attitude to adopt and calling to follow. Every advertisement is attempting to steer us in a certain direction. It can be confusing\, we wonder what to decide.\nBut in relation to the Person of Christ we each must decide for himself or herself. Peter said\, ‘You are the Christ’ and all who make that confession acknowledge Jesus as Lord and joyfully submit to His will.

SUMMARY:"this house was finished" [Ezra 6:15]
DESCRIPTION:“this house was finished”. The temple of the Lord was completed in spite of all the opposition and hindrance the returned exiles had faced. The workers had been made to stop and when at last the dispute was resolved and a new command to build received from Darius\, the workers began to work with great speed. They had no time to lose: who could tell but the king’s instruction would be reversed again!\nBy God’s grace your house will be finished – the life that you have been given to build will be complete and added with many others to God’s glory. Yet you need to put your mind to the task in hand. The bricks don’t fall into place. God who has called you will equip and strengthen you. Get on with God’s work in your life today.

SUMMARY:"study to be quiet" [I Thessalonians 4:11]
DESCRIPTION:“study to be quiet”. Being quiet does not come naturally to most of us – not for any length of time anyway! It calls for application or study to perform the exercise.\nOur desire must not be to be known for our much speaking.\nAnd we do not want to meddle in other’s affairs – a condition that usually indicates we neglect our own.\nSome think that noise hides reality – like the loud music that deafens some ears – or will cover weakness in our argument – like the speaker who inserted in his notes “shout here; argument weak!”\nFor some time each day we need to be still and quietly wait upon the Lord. This is something that the world at large misses\, but we must cultivate the habit if Christ would fill us with His grace.

SUMMARY:"yet in my flesh shall I see God" [Job 19:26]
DESCRIPTION:“yet in my flesh shall I see God”. Job was a firm believer in the resurrection. He knew that once he was in the grave\, decay would set in and soon only bones be left. Yet he speaks of seeing God in his flesh. His hope was of a resurrection body in which he would see God – something mortal man cannot do. Many years later\, the Apostle Paul\, explaining the resurrection body said that mortality must put on immortality. This world is to see a resurrection of all who have died. Jesus said that all who are in the graves would hear the voice of the Son of God.\nThere must be a judgment to right the injustices of this life. Jesus said those who had done evil would know a resurrection of damnation. Job’s faith in God held firm in the midst of the greatest testing. His hope was resurrection to eternal life. All who love God share in it.

SUMMARY:"other foundation can no man lay" [I Corinthians 3:11]
DESCRIPTION:“other foundation can no man lay”. Many do try to lay down their own foundation and the building they erect upon it goes up rapidly. But the testings of life soon show that what was thought to be rock-bed is sand.\nJesus Christ is the only foundation upon which life can be built. Because He is always the same and does not change\, the precepts laid down by His apostles and prophets hold good today. The written Word of God is relevant because it meets man’s deepest need. They make a grave error who try to alter that foundation.\nWithout a building that will last\, life is but a sham. The only way to build for eternity is to build upon the finished work of Christ on the Cross of Calvary as Saviour of all who will believe. Have no dealings with imitators and innovators. Build with durable material on the foundation God has provided.

SUMMARY:"The Lord is at your right hand" [Psalm 110:5(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The Lord is at your right hand”. The shepherd on the Judean hillside may have little in common with the computer technician. But while the age is different and the demands more exacting\, some things do not change. Especially is this so in the Lord’s ability and readiness to meet man’s need.\nSuch is the assurance in this verse. The Lord does not remove the pressure always – more often He gives an awareness of His Presence alongside\, supporting and strengthening you.\nHe is as indignant at the godlessness of men as the disciple is. Repeatedly His Word speaks of the day of His wrath. Justice can only be ascribed to the final outcome. Until then be comforted to know that the Lord is at your right hand.

SUMMARY:"Jesus wept" [John 11:35]
DESCRIPTION:“Jesus wept”. Jesus did not weep because Lazarus was suffering\, that was over\, though He may have wept that Lazarus had been made to suffer. Neither did He weep because He would not see him again – He was soon to raise him up when they would be reunited. He may have wept at the sorrow caused by the loss of those who would not be raised.\nJesus’ tears were more than conforming to the custom when anyone dies. Jesus wept when confronted with the cutting sorrow that sin caused as He was faced with the loss of a friend. He identified Himself with all who feel the keenness of such loss.\nBut He did not merely weep. He went on to Jerusalem and gave His life so that all who trust might know eternal joy.

SUMMARY:"walk as children of light" [Ephesians 5:8]
DESCRIPTION:“walk as children of light”. Allowing the light of the glorious gospel to illumine all of your being.\nAllowing His light to shine upon your path. The healing rays of His life and love warming your innermost being. The lamp of His Word shining on the path He has chosen for you giving you clear guidance when the next step is to be taken.\nAllowing the light of His love to be reflected from you to all around. Taking care to let nothing in you mar or diminish its blessing to those looking on.\nKeeping your heavenly batteries charged – the means whereby you fulfil Jesus’ prediction that His disciples were to be lights in the world. This world has some very dark places\, but darkness must flee where the Lord puts the children of light to shine.

SUMMARY:"it shall come to pass\, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved" [Acts 2:21]
DESCRIPTION:“it shall come to pass\, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved”. ‘It shall come to pass’ means that the time will come.\n‘Whosoever’ builds the entrance wide enough for anybody. In reality there are those who feel that for one reason or another they have not reached that place of trust yet. But none need feel they never will get there. ‘It shall come to pass’ is a promise everyone may clutch in his quest for God.\nLife is a pathway: it is not an aimless round as we might be tempted to think. Those who seek shall find and the path Godward will reach its destination.\nSometimes the words will not come forth\, the call just is not there\, or the promise appears so far off. ‘But it shall come to pass’ though getting there for some takes longer than expected.

SUMMARY:"he made the storm be still" [Psalm 107:29(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he made the storm be still”. The catalogue of God’s doings listed in this Psalm makes interesting reading. This part verse is but one of many.\nIt does not necessarily mean He caused the storm to cease its raging\, though that was what happened when Jesus stood among His fearful disciples in the boat and bade the sea to cease her roaring. It does mean that its raging no longer affects or disturbs the heart of those that cry unto the Lord in their trouble. In some cases He gives sleep; in others an awareness of the reality of His love\, so that what was frightening loses its dread. The storm that was frightening becomes thrilling as one recognises that the Lord rides upon it. It is a ‘still small voice’ that comes through the cacophany of sound that is around. There need be no turbulence within when Jesus whispers peace.

SUMMARY:"If anyone wants to boast" [Jeremiah 9:24(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“If anyone wants to boast”. Some people do seem to enjoy boasting. In many different areas we may obtain a sense of achievement. Yet the temptation to boast about our achievements is something we do well to resist in every area except one.\nThe prophet Jeremiah is talking about boasting that we know the Lord and feel His constant love.\nThe Apostle Paul said that the only thing in which he would glory was the cross of Christ\, the sign of the salvation that he experienced and preached.\nWise men should not boast of their wisdom nor strong men of their strength nor rich men of their wealth. Those who see the Lord and receive His forgiveness and mercy can boast in the Lord and His goodness to them.

SUMMARY:"She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial" [Mark 14:8(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial”. We wonder whether these words of Jesus indicate that the lady who came to anoint Jesus in the house of Simon the leper had a special revelation of the passion and death that Jesus was about to experience. It is most likely that hers was a spontaneous expression of love enhanced by a recognition of who Jesus was\, that made this lady defy protocol and break the flask of costly oil of spikenard and pour it on Jesus’ head. She did not know that Jesus would describe what she was doing in this way.\nNone of us knows what purpose may be achieved when we express our love for Jesus. Jesus who gave such love waits to receive in return. We love Him because He first loved us\, and this truth binds together the family of God.

SUMMARY:"redeeming the time" [Ephesians 5:16]
DESCRIPTION:“redeeming the time”. A life lived without Christ in every part of it\, fails to attain the standard set – hence the need for even a cup of cold water to be given in His Name. But once a soul turns to Christ\, they should waste no time in catching up on missed opportunities\, or growing in grace\, and in helping others to do the same.\nThe only way to put time to the best advantage is to find what the Lord wants you to do with it. Once you know this you can put every waking moment to good use\, for the will of the Lord extends to every area of your life.\nThe Devil is the biggest thief of time. He tempts the followers of the Lord to squander this great gift of time. Thank God\, He promises to restore the years the locust has eaten\, and it is surprising how much you can catch up once you begin to tread the ‘narrow way’.

DESCRIPTION:“may I not wash in them\, and be clean? “. Naaman the leper wanted cleansing from his leprosy on his terms. The river of Jordan was not good enough for his pride – Abana and Pharpar rivers would be much better.\nIn a similar way the sinner looks to see if he can be cleansed any other way than by the blood of Jesus at the foot of the cross. The answer is that there is none. The blessed thing is that the fountain for sin and uncleanness is still flowing.\nFaith can still rise from the human heart and reach out and take God’s gift of sin forgiven\, peace with God\, restoration of a broken relationship through Jesus.\nThe extent of the sin is not the hindrance: it is your obedience and acknowledgment that Christ came to save sinners and that you ask Him to save you that is needed.

DESCRIPTION:“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord”. Who or what will be guiding you through the avenue of life today? Your own expertise and experience may stand you in good stead. An awareness of things around you should ensure that you take great care in negotiating its difficulties and obstacles.\nThis verse marks out the good man as living by direct instruction from the Lord. Through the reading of His Word\, by listening to His voice and a sensitivity to the leading of the Spirit\, you can be divinely led throughout the day.\nIt is far more than an order-and-obey relationship. It is fellowship and friendship that can be found nowhere else. This ordering of one’s steps by the Lord is a delight.

SUMMARY:"they found that Jesus was alone" [Luke 9:36(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they found that Jesus was alone”. Jesus was still there when Moses and Elijah had returned to heaven.\nThe disciples wanted to remain on the mountain top. Peter offered to build three shelters for Jesus\, Moses and Elijah. But time on life’s mountain peaks are to give us strength and fortitude in the subsequent struggles in the valley.\nWhen all have left and the lights have gone out\, Jesus is still there. It’s the same when the follower of Jesus enters a period of darkness – He is still there.\nYou may feel alone when others leave\, but alone with Jesus and you have the company you need. With others on the mountain top may be inspirational. Alone with Jesus is for ever blessed.

SUMMARY:"I will bless the person who puts his trust in me" [Jeremiah 17:7(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“I will bless the person who puts his trust in me”. Putting your trust in the Lord attracts God’s blessing upon every department of your life. No hidden snags or dangers when God blesses. His path and His calling are not easy but they are blessed. The work may be difficult but it is rewarding and the goals He sets achievable.\nIt is our resolve to trust the Lord in all things and with all that we have that sometimes falters.\nBeing convinced of the truth of God’s promise is paramount. You cannot trust a person if you do not believe what he says and that he only says what he can perform.\nSo trust in the Lord with all your heart and know His blessing in every part of your life.

SUMMARY:"is well known for her good deeds" [I Timothy 5:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“is well known for her good deeds”. This is the quality of a godly widow. Being ‘well known’ speaks of many people testifying to her good deeds. Paul gives a list of some of the actions that are included and they benefit the young and the old\, the hungry and those who struggle.\nThis lady doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty or putting in the effort for the wellbeing of others. She’s not given to feeling sorry for herself\, but is aware of the needs of others. She’s not out to be popular\, but to be of service to those around her. Her acts of kindness are not on a whim or for show but have been proved over time and make a real difference. Such women are still around today and are an example for us all to follow. [AP]

SUMMARY:"Return home" [Luke 8:39 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Return home”. In many cases home is the hardest mission field. Everybody knows you at home. So it is there that the change will be noticed. You cannot start your life afresh like going to a new environment. And it is your new life as a follower of Jesus that must begin at home.\nIt does not matter how useful you think you could be elsewhere. When Jesus sends you home as He did the demoniac whom He healed\, it is home you must go. The graduation course in true discipleship is undertaken at home. When at home you can’t really pretend to be someone else. There they read you like a book.\nAnd when Christ has come into your life that is what they need to do. Home\, if you’ve not witnessed there\, is the place to start – and there your life will speak most.

SUMMARY:"Then Philip ran" [Acts 8:30(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Then Philip ran”. Once you are clear what God wants you to do\, some extra speed may be called for to do it.\nIf Philip had not run he might never have caught up with the chariot and seen the conversion of this court official. The two disciples ran to the tomb to check the exciting news that it was empty and Jesus had been seen alive.\nThe demon possessed man who lived in the tombs ran to worship Jesus when he saw Him coming ashore.\nAbraham ran to meet his heavenly visitors\, Rebekah ran to tend to the needs of Isaac’s servant\, the wife of Manoah ran to tell her husband the angel had appeared again and the boy Samuel ran to Eli when he mistook God’s voice for this aged prophet.\nWith what enthusiasm and devotion do you serve Him?

SUMMARY:"could this happen? " [II Kings 7:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“could this happen? “. Be careful you do not despise or question the promises of God like this servant of the King of Israel did long ago.\nIn a time of severe famine Elisha had said that tomorrow flour and barley would be plentiful. The courtier on whose arm the king leaned ridiculed the statement saying that if windows opened in heaven could this happen!\nNext day this man was killed in the stampede to get through the gate of the city and out to the tables of the Aramean (Syrian) army left laden with food when they fled in terror.\nYou may ask your friend or neighbour if something might happen but do not limit God. Seek His face\, hear His promise to you. Believe it\, act upon it\, and then see just what the Lord will do with and for those who trust Him.

SUMMARY:"Whosoever shall confess me before men" [Luke 12:8]
DESCRIPTION:“Whosoever shall confess me before men”. Confession need not be saying anything: it may just be standing up and being counted as a true Christian. Like nailing your colours to the mast\, it is raising the flag so that it cannot be taken down.\nOpportunities to do this are often missed. Once you have made Jesus Lord\, it should be done straight away\, and it may be done in a sentence. Sadly\, many who will sing about Jesus in their fellowship do not mention His name to those outside who need Him.\nThe reward for confessing Christ before men is great and completely out of proportion to the effort put in. Perhaps the answer is to be so filled with His love that you cannot keep quiet! Jesus says He will mention or confess our name as His disciple to His Father in heaven.

SUMMARY:"my redeemer … shall stand at the latter day upon the earth" [Job 19:25]
DESCRIPTION:“my redeemer … shall stand at the latter day upon the earth”. Job had a keen spiritual insight. His trouble only served to make this clearer. Divested of all he had\, Job dwelt upon the promise of God and the assurance of faith.\nJob’s anticipation may have been of Jesus at His First Advent. That was certainly an event to which Job could look forward. For him\, salvation was something yet to be effected. His description of the ‘Latter day’ and associating this in the next verse with his own resurrection\, may indicate his looking to the Second Advent of Jesus\, that will be the occasion when every eye shall see the Son of Man and when He will judge the world.\nAll men of faith have needed to receive Christ as redeemer. Only through Him can redemption be secured.

SUMMARY:"It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord" [Lamentations 3:26]
DESCRIPTION:“It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord”. Are you chasing around trying to do it all: or frustrated because you can’t do all that you want to do?\nHave you forgotten that the Lord is the one who saves – saves your life from destruction by faith in His salvation\, saves your hours and minutes from vain activity by His counsel and guidance and saves you from loss of friends and fellowship that you so cherish.\nThis is a way that many are too busy to notice – trust in the Lord engendering hope and confidence in His promises enabling a person to quietly wait.\nWhen it’s His work there is no purpose in going ahead without Him and making it your work. Peace is the possession of those who hope and wait.

SUMMARY:"a cup of water to drink" [Mark 9:41]
DESCRIPTION:“a cup of water to drink”. A very small thing but it can be a life saver. Really it is not what it costs\, but how much it is needed that counts.\nA suit of clothes for a man who has none is far more valuable than the same suit to a man who already has six.\nSome only ask a cup of water\, yet we demur after counting the cost of getting it to them\, or they die of thirst while we argue over the reasons that have brought the drought upon them.\nThen you can provide any number of cups of water and help multitudes of needy folk\, whereas more expensive gifts to those who already have so much must be limited in number. The promise from the lips of Jesus is that cups of cold water to those in need and given in His Name (out of love for Him) will not be forgotten by Him or them.
