SUMMARY:"they found that Jesus was alone" [Luke 9:36(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they found that Jesus was alone”. Jesus was still there when Moses and Elijah had returned to heaven.\nThe disciples wanted to remain on the mountain top. Peter offered to build three shelters for Jesus\, Moses and Elijah. But time on life’s mountain peaks are to give us strength and fortitude in the subsequent struggles in the valley.\nWhen all have left and the lights have gone out\, Jesus is still there. It’s the same when the follower of Jesus enters a period of darkness – He is still there.\nYou may feel alone when others leave\, but alone with Jesus and you have the company you need. With others on the mountain top may be inspirational. Alone with Jesus is for ever blessed.

SUMMARY:"I will bless the person who puts his trust in me" [Jeremiah 17:7(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“I will bless the person who puts his trust in me”. Putting your trust in the Lord attracts God’s blessing upon every department of your life. No hidden snags or dangers when God blesses. His path and His calling are not easy but they are blessed. The work may be difficult but it is rewarding and the goals He sets achievable.\nIt is our resolve to trust the Lord in all things and with all that we have that sometimes falters.\nBeing convinced of the truth of God’s promise is paramount. You cannot trust a person if you do not believe what he says and that he only says what he can perform.\nSo trust in the Lord with all your heart and know His blessing in every part of your life.

SUMMARY:"is well known for her good deeds" [I Timothy 5:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“is well known for her good deeds”. This is the quality of a godly widow. Being ‘well known’ speaks of many people testifying to her good deeds. Paul gives a list of some of the actions that are included and they benefit the young and the old\, the hungry and those who struggle.\nThis lady doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty or putting in the effort for the wellbeing of others. She’s not given to feeling sorry for herself\, but is aware of the needs of others. She’s not out to be popular\, but to be of service to those around her. Her acts of kindness are not on a whim or for show but have been proved over time and make a real difference. Such women are still around today and are an example for us all to follow. [AP]

SUMMARY:"Return home" [Luke 8:39 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Return home”. In many cases home is the hardest mission field. Everybody knows you at home. So it is there that the change will be noticed. You cannot start your life afresh like going to a new environment. And it is your new life as a follower of Jesus that must begin at home.\nIt does not matter how useful you think you could be elsewhere. When Jesus sends you home as He did the demoniac whom He healed\, it is home you must go. The graduation course in true discipleship is undertaken at home. When at home you can’t really pretend to be someone else. There they read you like a book.\nAnd when Christ has come into your life that is what they need to do. Home\, if you’ve not witnessed there\, is the place to start – and there your life will speak most.

SUMMARY:"Then Philip ran" [Acts 8:30(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Then Philip ran”. Once you are clear what God wants you to do\, some extra speed may be called for to do it.\nIf Philip had not run he might never have caught up with the chariot and seen the conversion of this court official. The two disciples ran to the tomb to check the exciting news that it was empty and Jesus had been seen alive.\nThe demon possessed man who lived in the tombs ran to worship Jesus when he saw Him coming ashore.\nAbraham ran to meet his heavenly visitors\, Rebekah ran to tend to the needs of Isaac’s servant\, the wife of Manoah ran to tell her husband the angel had appeared again and the boy Samuel ran to Eli when he mistook God’s voice for this aged prophet.\nWith what enthusiasm and devotion do you serve Him?

SUMMARY:"could this happen? " [II Kings 7:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“could this happen? “. Be careful you do not despise or question the promises of God like this servant of the King of Israel did long ago.\nIn a time of severe famine Elisha had said that tomorrow flour and barley would be plentiful. The courtier on whose arm the king leaned ridiculed the statement saying that if windows opened in heaven could this happen!\nNext day this man was killed in the stampede to get through the gate of the city and out to the tables of the Aramean (Syrian) army left laden with food when they fled in terror.\nYou may ask your friend or neighbour if something might happen but do not limit God. Seek His face\, hear His promise to you. Believe it\, act upon it\, and then see just what the Lord will do with and for those who trust Him.

SUMMARY:"Whosoever shall confess me before men" [Luke 12:8]
DESCRIPTION:“Whosoever shall confess me before men”. Confession need not be saying anything: it may just be standing up and being counted as a true Christian. Like nailing your colours to the mast\, it is raising the flag so that it cannot be taken down.\nOpportunities to do this are often missed. Once you have made Jesus Lord\, it should be done straight away\, and it may be done in a sentence. Sadly\, many who will sing about Jesus in their fellowship do not mention His name to those outside who need Him.\nThe reward for confessing Christ before men is great and completely out of proportion to the effort put in. Perhaps the answer is to be so filled with His love that you cannot keep quiet! Jesus says He will mention or confess our name as His disciple to His Father in heaven.

SUMMARY:"my redeemer … shall stand at the latter day upon the earth" [Job 19:25]
DESCRIPTION:“my redeemer … shall stand at the latter day upon the earth”. Job had a keen spiritual insight. His trouble only served to make this clearer. Divested of all he had\, Job dwelt upon the promise of God and the assurance of faith.\nJob’s anticipation may have been of Jesus at His First Advent. That was certainly an event to which Job could look forward. For him\, salvation was something yet to be effected. His description of the ‘Latter day’ and associating this in the next verse with his own resurrection\, may indicate his looking to the Second Advent of Jesus\, that will be the occasion when every eye shall see the Son of Man and when He will judge the world.\nAll men of faith have needed to receive Christ as redeemer. Only through Him can redemption be secured.

SUMMARY:"It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord" [Lamentations 3:26]
DESCRIPTION:“It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord”. Are you chasing around trying to do it all: or frustrated because you can’t do all that you want to do?\nHave you forgotten that the Lord is the one who saves – saves your life from destruction by faith in His salvation\, saves your hours and minutes from vain activity by His counsel and guidance and saves you from loss of friends and fellowship that you so cherish.\nThis is a way that many are too busy to notice – trust in the Lord engendering hope and confidence in His promises enabling a person to quietly wait.\nWhen it’s His work there is no purpose in going ahead without Him and making it your work. Peace is the possession of those who hope and wait.

SUMMARY:"a cup of water to drink" [Mark 9:41]
DESCRIPTION:“a cup of water to drink”. A very small thing but it can be a life saver. Really it is not what it costs\, but how much it is needed that counts.\nA suit of clothes for a man who has none is far more valuable than the same suit to a man who already has six.\nSome only ask a cup of water\, yet we demur after counting the cost of getting it to them\, or they die of thirst while we argue over the reasons that have brought the drought upon them.\nThen you can provide any number of cups of water and help multitudes of needy folk\, whereas more expensive gifts to those who already have so much must be limited in number. The promise from the lips of Jesus is that cups of cold water to those in need and given in His Name (out of love for Him) will not be forgotten by Him or them.

SUMMARY:"For the Lamb … will be their shepherd" [Revelation 7:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“For the Lamb … will be their shepherd”. Here is a wonderful turn of phrase. Lambs usually need to be cared for by the shepherd\, but in the Kingdom of God it is the Lamb who becomes the shepherd. John the Baptist spoke of Christ as the ‘Lamb of God’ who would be offered as the sacrifice for sins. Jesus spoke of himself as the good shepherd who would give his life for the sheep. Both are brought together in this glimpse into the heavenly realms as Christ takes his rightful place at the centre of the throne.\nThe One who was led out to be crucified now leads the saints in safety. The One who cried ‘I thirst’ now provides springs of living water. The One who came in humility will come again in glory and triumph. Worthy is the Lamb! [AP]

SUMMARY:"My times are in your hand" [Psalm 31:15(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“My times are in your hand”. Because we do not know what a day may bring forth\, it is reassuring to read today’s verse. Doing God’s will now is more important than trying to anticipate what tomorrow may bring. If it is a time of waiting or of preparation remember it is still of purpose in God’s plan for you.\nThere is a time for everything and the Lord wants to bring His joy into all you do. If Christ cannot be there you should not be there!\nGod’s hand is a mighty hand\, full of blessing for His People. It can guide you through life’s most difficult maze and support you when called to carry the heaviest load.\nThere is no better place to be than in the centre of His hand for it is the centre of His care and love. DESCRIPTION:“everyone to whom much is given\, from him much will be required”. Better a little well used than a lot wasted. You are more likely to get five out of five than ten out of ten so why covet the lifestyle of those who have more than you?\nGod gives His gifts knowing what is best for us\, both as regards what we can do and what needs doing. So rather than thinking what you could do with what you wish you had\, look to what the Lord has given you\, seize the opportunities that come your way and put to use all you have. Note there are no exemptions for age\, infirmity\, accident or emergency. It is “everyone”: we are all called and honoured to serve the Lord.

SUMMARY:"let not your hands be weak" [II Chronicles 15:7]
DESCRIPTION:“let not your hands be weak”. These words are part of the prophesy of Azariah spoken to King Asa. They were days when ‘there was no peace to him that went out\, nor to him that came in’. In a world of war\, disease and sorrow we are tempted to say\, ‘There is nothing I can do’. But any such feelings must not be acceded to. Weak hands can make you the weak link in a chain.\nThe Lord Who gives strength to the weak expects you to lift up those weak hands in faith knowing that His strength is made in perfect in weakness.\nIn the Lord you shall do exploits. There is an anointing whereby He places His hands upon yours. The One Who creates men out of dust can empower them by His Spirit so that no hands need ever hang limply to the side.

SUMMARY:"Who has believed our report? " [Isaiah 53:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Who has believed our report? “. What Isaiah foretold in prophecy was witnessed by dwellers in Palestine 200 years later. For nearly two thousand years the followers of Jesus have born testimony to the truth of the gospel in their lives as the news has spread all around the world.\nThe Jews could not accept that their Messiah was to suffer: they looked for a king who would release them from bondage. They did not believe the report. When Jesus was to be taken and tried by the religious leaders and rulers of His day\, all forsook Him and fled.\nAt first when the report of His resurrection broke\, His own disciples were slow to believe\, one of them insisting he would only do so if he touched His body. But the truth did dawn: the glory was revealed. Isaiah’s Suffering Servant was seen to be the Saviour Jesus.

SUMMARY:"he who believes in me has everlasting life" [John 6:47(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he who believes in me has everlasting life”. Underwritten by His own atoning death and effectively sealed by His glorious resurrection\, Jesus has no difficulty in fulfilling His promise. The deepest sinner need have no difficulty in accepting it\, for beginning with the malefactor who hung next to Him at Calvary\, men ever since have had the assurance of sin forgiven\, peace with God and eternal life through trusting Him.\nBut since the Fall in Eden\, man’s desire has never been fulfilled – until Christ appeared to put away sin\, that is. It is a basic desire of man that he shall keep alive. The faith of those who had looked forward to His Coming could now be rewarded. And all who hear and receive the message of new life in Christ can enjoy the blessed experience of the new birth which is but the beginning of this everlasting life.

The Lord promised Abram that if he would leave his country\, his people and his father’s household and go to the land of which the Lord would show him\, the Lord would bless Him.\nAbram obeyed and became the father of all who exercise this faith and obedience. The Israelites became God’s chosen people and in spite of their wanderings and waywardness became the forebears of that greater nation\, the redeemed out of all tongues and people\, who would form the church or body of Christ.\nAll who would have that blessing of the Lord that makes rich and about which there is no sorrow must seek God’s face\, listen to His voice and obey. SUMMARY:"Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient" [John 6:7]
DESCRIPTION:“Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient”. No! Neither is two hundred thousand pennyworth\, nor all the bread from all the bakeries in the land enough\, if mankind is to be truly fed! For\, man shall not live by bread alone. But give these people Jesus and all their needs will soon be met. A miracle to satisfy today’s hunger is wonderful\, but Jesus satisfies the depths of the soul\, and that is greater still.\nSome of the relief operations to needy parts are miracles in themselves as food and provisions are collected\, then conveyed by ‘giant birds’ to the stricken areas. But humanitarian aid is not sufficient. The souls of men must be fed. Fed\, but add to this the bread of the Gospel.\nAre you telling others of the place where burdens are lifted and sin is washed away?

SUMMARY:"Ill-gotten treasures are of no value" [Proverbs 10:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Ill-gotten treasures are of no value”. It is not what value your treasure is on the open market\, but how you acquired it. This may be something that only you and God know. Because of the importance attached to how we acquire what we have\, the proverb goes on to say that righteousness delivers from death. And since we have to leave all our treasure behind when we die\, the attainment of right or righteousness in the sight of God becomes of paramount importance.\nIt is not just a matter of collecting\, but of collecting what is of real value and as Jesus taught us of laying up or transferring treasure to heaven.\nJesus went about doing good as He proclaimed the gospel. We need to do the same. Deal in eternal things today!

SUMMARY:"How many loaves do you have? " [Mark 8:5(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“How many loaves do you have? “. With this question\, Jesus turns the whole perspective on the situation around. Instead of looking at what they hadn’t got\, as the disciples were doing\, Jesus looks at what they have got. Jesus hadn’t actually asked the disciples to provide the bread. He’d simply shared his concern for the people. But instead of asking how they could help\, the disciples\, like many of us\, could only see the difficulties. Jesus saw the opportunity.\nJesus longs to use what you and I do have to encourage our faith\, to bring blessing to others and to be a part of what He wants to do. Rather than looking at the problems and difficulties\, see the opportunities and offer what you have and are in service to the Lord today. [AP]

SUMMARY:"the wells of Salvation" [Isaiah 12:3]
DESCRIPTION:“the wells of Salvation”. Isaiah pictured it\, the Gospel writers describe it and the Book of Acts gives us instances of sinners drawing from them. Many have been doing so ever since.\nThe prophet described those drawing water from these wells as doing so with joy. And what joy can equal that experienced when the sin that has separated us from God’s blessing of salvation is washed away!\nThat joy has sent the music of the gospel echoing around the earth. It is joy to the world and thirsty souls have come from every quarter.\nToday an untold number will be coming for the first time: others will be quenching their soul thirst from the water of life. Not so deep you cannot draw from it: not so far that you cannot reach it and you are invited to come.

SUMMARY:"and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever" [Psalm 23:6]
DESCRIPTION:“and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever”. The Shepherd Psalm describes a relationship that will never end. In no way will the Lord help and protect you for a time\, and then leave you to get on without Him.\nTo reach the house of the Lord is to attain the highest point of worship. To be there must mean separation for ever from the evil and snares of this life and also an engagement in glory that will never tire.\nService in the house of the Lord never becomes monotonous. There will be no stagnation there.\nMost things in this life are eventually exhausted and you need a further supply – not so the exhaustless stores of our Lord.\nThe Lord’s sheep need be in no doubt where they are going.

SUMMARY:"and great grace was upon them all" [Acts 4:33]
DESCRIPTION:“and great grace was upon them all”. Grace is favour freely given. The Lord Jesus has never failed to meet the believer’s every need for grace and help.\nThis verse in the Book of the Acts describes the goodness of the Lord in covering the believers with grace as the Church was launched forward on the crest of the wave of the outpoured Holy Spirit.\nEvery soul that has felt the same Spirit knows the feeling of grace – grace that brings salvation\, grace as an ocean in which the child of God can swim and a Divine medium in which the soul can grow.\nGreat grace upon them all is not confined to members of the early Church. It can be the experience of the individual believer\, of you in your circle\, today.

SUMMARY:"How can these things be? " [John 3:9]
DESCRIPTION:“How can these things be? “. We all have things we cannot understand. The surprising thing about Nicodemus was that as a spiritual leader among the people he did not understand the need for a new birth about which Jesus was telling him.\nWe commend him for his honest and enquiring questions and have little doubt that he accepted the truth presented to him by Jesus. It was the first time that Nicodemus had been faced with this question of the new birth.\nWe must be ever grateful for John three verse sixteen spoken to Nicodemus and we do well to come to the Lord with our questions. There will be times when we do not find a reason given but what He says will always satisfy us until we reach heaven\, when all will be made plain to us.

SUMMARY:"the prize for which God has called me" [Philippians 3:14(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the prize for which God has called me”. The prize before the eyes of the disciple of Jesus is the high calling of God in Christ. God sent His Son to be the Saviour of the World. He died for our sins. He will justify the ungodly who repent and when justified by faith there is no longer any condemnation in the sight of God. He calls the repentant sinner to be seated in heavenly places in Christ. Human language cannot express nor mortal heart conceive the glory that awaits those who love Jesus.\nNow with such a prize awaiting all who run the Christian race\, a clear sight of it must stimulate us to press hard towards it: run with patience as we wait for it and then begin to rejoice in the glory that awaits.

SUMMARY:"his sleep went from him" [Daniel 6:18]
DESCRIPTION:“his sleep went from him”. Darius had been tricked into issuing an edict that Daniel could not observe. It marked the end of Daniel’s presidency. Darius was made to place his seal on the mouth of the lion’s den into which Daniel had been thrown. Not surprising his sleep went from him!\nYet God was using this incident to tell Darius and through him the whole world that the God of Daniel is the living God.\nSometimes we make mistakes we cannot rectify. Our soul is so disturbed that we cannot sleep. In all such cases the Lord can turn gross misconduct into great triumph for His name if we call upon Him\, trust in Him and look for His deliverance\, as Darius found out when he returned in the morning.

SUMMARY:"Go your way" [Mark 10:52(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Go your way”. We are not told where Bartimaeus went after Jesus had healed him. Whatever he did\, it was his own thing – Jesus called it\, ‘your way’. The Lord did not want Bartimaeus to live the life of someone else. He would mix with people who would marvel at his experience\, but he was to be himself. It may have been back to the old way he knew before he became blind\, but this became a new way now he had met Jesus. That made the difference.\nHas your way become God’s way? It won’t until you take the Lord into it. Your way extends to every department in life and it is in every department you need to admit the Lord.\nYou would expect Bartimaeus to ever be telling about so dramatic an experience. But is your salvation any less?

SUMMARY:"And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit" [Acts 13:52(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit”. The Holy Spirit brings joy – it is a fruit of the Spirit. The disciples were filled with the joy of the Spirit because they had obeyed God’s voice and faithfully proclaimed His Word. It was not the joy of ease and acceptance for they had been persecuted and expelled from the region. Their joy was not one of lightness and hilarity. It was from deep down within their being whence Jesus said would flow rivers of living water. It was the joy that is known by all the labourers in the gospel – the soul-winner’s joy for the Lord had sent them forth to reap souls for the kingdom. The disciples had seen many honour the Word and believe the gospel. Other joy depends upon outward circumstances. Be filled with the Holy Spirit and know joy from within.

SUMMARY:"So is everyone who is born of the Spirit" [John 3:8(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“So is everyone who is born of the Spirit”. Jesus used the wind to illustrate to Nicodemus the ministry the Holy Spirit would have in his life when he was born again.\nThe wind blows where it will – you cannot predict the course it will take.\nYou can hear the wind\, but cannot see it – what you see is the effect it is having on people and things.\nThe origin and destination of the wind are not known – you don’t know why it comes as it does or what course it will take before it subsides. How does this illustration relate to your experience? Don’t build a wall to block the Holy Spirit working in your life. There is no knowing what the Lord will do other than whatever the Spirit does will glorify Jesus.\nGod grant us some evidence that the wind is blowing!

SUMMARY:"the God of our fathers\, has glorified his servant Jesus" [Acts 3:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the God of our fathers\, has glorified his servant Jesus”. God the Father has highly exalted His Son\, Jesus.\nIt must have been glorious when in that conference of the God-head before the world began\, He agreed to go on that great undertaking of salvation.\nIt was glorious at His actual Incarnation when the heavenly choir sang in chorus. His Father bore testimony to His Son several times during His ministry.\nIt was glory when the tomb was empty and He rose from the dead and again when He ascended into heaven and assured His disciples of the ministry of the Spirit.\nYet it becomes most glorious to you when you magnify and exalt Him in your heart as you repent and become converted. Glorified in heaven and in all the hearts of His followers.
