SUMMARY:"(Ananias) stood beside me and said\, 'Brother Saul\, …' " [Acts 22:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“(Ananias) stood beside me and said\, ‘Brother Saul\, …’ “. He was renowned for his hatred and persecution of the followers of Jesus; he supported the stoning of Stephen; he came to Damascus intending to commit disciples to prison. Yet Ananias addressed him\, ‘Brother Saul’!\nAnanias walked in the Spirit. He recognised that the vision telling him to do this was from the Lord. With some trepidation yet believing the impossible\, that Saul was converted\, he obeyed. Saul ever remembered Ananias’ visit with gratitude.\nWe need Ananias’s today – people in touch with the Lord and willing to extend sympathy and help to those who want to begin but can’t get going. Most would have said\, ‘Blindness is what you deserve’. Ananias said\, ‘Brother Saul\, I’ve come that you might see!’

SUMMARY:"Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord\, and to do it\, and to teach his statutes" [Ezra 7:10(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord\, and to do it\, and to teach his statutes”. Ezra studied his subject before presenting it. When he found what was demanded of him by the law of the Lord\, he did it. Once practising it in his own life he was able to teach others by precept and example and he set to and did this is no small way.\nWhen a person in his position does this it is not surprising to find a whole nation has turned to the Lord in repentance.\nWe do need to warn the next generation not to repeat our mistakes and get in the mess we find ourselves. But the best way to do this is by setting an example. Let others learn from our own study and practice.

SUMMARY:"a great voice\, as of a trumpet" [Revelation 1:10]
DESCRIPTION:“a great voice\, as of a trumpet”. The word ‘great’ occurs many times in the Book of the Revelation. There is great tribulation\, a great sword\, a great earthquake\, a great star\, a great furnace and the great river Euphrates\, to mention but a few.\nIn this verse it is the greatness of His voice that catches our attention – powerful to calm the raging sea and to speak peace to the troubled heart. To the disciple it is as the voice of a shepherd to the sheep\, recognised and loved.\nThe mightiest display is yet to come\, however\, for Jesus Himself said that all who are in the graves would hear His voice. In that day none will sleep: all will come forth at the resurrection.

SUMMARY:"The Lord is my shepherd" [Psalm 23:1]
DESCRIPTION:“The Lord is my shepherd”. Not the testimony of those who do not recognise themselves to be as sheep needing a shepherd. But to those who know themselves to be wandering and to all who find it impossible to return to the fold unaided\, it is the blessed description of One Who says\, ‘I am the Good Shepherd’.\nThose who appreciate the moral and physical dangers lurking at every turn in life’s way\, are more than grateful for the comfort this assurance gives.\nBut these words are an open invitation and have been taken as such all down the ages. If the Lord is shepherding others\, he can do so for you.\nSeeing others lost on the hillsides of life should deter you from trying to make it alone. No good thing is lacking when the Lord is your shepherd.

SUMMARY:"I have compassion on the multitude" [Matthew 15:32]
DESCRIPTION:“I have compassion on the multitude”. Jesus came not to judge the world but to save it\, and as He mingled with men and women compassion for the multitudes was engendered in His heart.\nCompassion is something the world needs more than sympathy. Sympathy is being sorry for: compassion is the same and doing something about it. To say you have compassion and yet to do nothing is false. The compassion of Jesus met both the physical and spiritual needs of man.\nYou cannot save the world but you can witness to the person next to you. See the millions in need and be constrained to help the brother or sister next to you. If all did that the life-line would reach across the world. Jesus had compassion. His disciples must exhibit the same if they would be like their Lord.

SUMMARY:"a great multitude\, which no man could number" [Revelation 7:9]
DESCRIPTION:“a great multitude\, which no man could number”. The multitude in heaven praising the Lord will be too great to number. ‘The Father’s house will be filled\,’ is what Jesus said. I recall preaching on that text to a small congregation in a Greek village many years ago. After the service a lady came to me\, expressing her gratitude in being shown this truth. She had judged heaven by the handful that had gathered in the little Evangelical church in her village. She imagined heaven would have many empty seats. Not a bit of it.\nJesus will see of the travail of His soul and be satisfied. By His righteousness\, many will be justified. You and I just need to see we’re playing our part in getting those whom we meet to come to Christ. Jesus promised to make His disciples fishers of men. Fishers throw out a line or net to catch the fish.

SUMMARY:"But Stephen\, full of the Holy Spirit\, looked up to heaven" [Acts 7:55(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But Stephen\, full of the Holy Spirit\, looked up to heaven”. The Holy Spirit did not merely enable Stephen to bravely face the mob that was about to stone him. The indwelling Holy Spirit gave Stephen a vision of heaven. The Holy Spirit will give that same vision to all who look with the eye of faith\, whether suffering is little or much.\nHeaven is the goal at the end of the race for all who love the Lord Jesus. He has gone into heaven to prepare a place for His followers. He will return to collect His own.\nMeanwhile those of His followers who die\, sleep in Jesus\, as Paul tells us\, waiting for that great awakening when saints past and present shall be united with the Lord and dwell with Him forever.\nAll who love Jesus should be looking up to heaven.

SUMMARY:"a fountain opened ... for sin and for uncleanness" [Zechariah 13:1]
DESCRIPTION:“a fountain opened … for sin and for uncleanness”. This prophecy and promise was given to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. This was the chosen people of God that the prophet knew. We now look back to the fulfilment of these words when Jesus died on the cross. His shed blood provided that fountain.\nNow we know that fountain to be for whosoever will come and by faith wash in its cleansing stream. The blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanses from all sin. The extent of the sin is no hindrance: it is failure to reach out in faith and confess sin that prevents many coming to the Lord.\nIt demands that by faith we visit the place called Calvary – that hill known as Golgotha\, where Christ died for our sins – and call upon the name of the Lord and be made clean.

SUMMARY:"wash away your sins" [Acts 22:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“wash away your sins”. Ananias encouraged Saul of Tarsus to be baptised and declare publicly what had happened to him.\nYou begin by trusting in the secret of your own heart\, but what you have done must be evidenced. Not to ‘nail your colours to the mast’ makes it easier to fall away when temptation\, apathy and fear come upon you.\nSaul experienced this washing by repenting and trusting Christ on the Damascus Road. He completed the step by testifying to the world in baptism. It was not his religious zeal\, or his being a Pharisee or his scholarship\, considerable though these were. It was allowing the blood of Jesus to avail for his soul that cleansed him.\nAs the refrain says – ‘Happy day when Jesus washed my sins away’.

SUMMARY:"you do not know how miserable and pitiful you are! " [Revelation 3:17(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“you do not know how miserable and pitiful you are! “. The church in Laodicea thought it was all right when in fact it was very spiritually sick. This wrong assessment arose from counting earthly instead of spiritual values. They failed to be spiritually minded and led by the Spirit.\nMiserable and pitiful is the true state of those who\n – only have what they can touch or see\n – do not know answered prayer because they do not pray\n – never play a part in winning souls for Christ\n – take the name but not the power of the gospel\n – pretend to be what they know they are not\n – could in no way be said to be living for Jesus.\nWhen awakened to our true state we can do something about it.

SUMMARY:"if the goodman of the house had known" [Matthew 24:43]
DESCRIPTION:“if the goodman of the house had known”. We don’t know when the Lord will return and so need to be ready. That He is coming He made quite clear with the words “I will come again”. We need to be ready.\nFollowers of Jesus all down the years have lived in expectancy of His coming. It is an attitude that all believers should adopt.\nWe don’t know the day or the hour\, not even the year or decade but we do know He is coming. The intervening years have seen many swept into the kingdom. The places at heaven’s banquet must be fast filling.\nTaking every opportunity to do good and to speak a word in His name\, to live a life honouring to God is the best indication that we expect His return anytime. Let it be that though we don’t know the hour\, we are ready!

SUMMARY:"How precious also are your thoughts to me\, O God" [Psalm 139:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“How precious also are your thoughts to me\, O God”. The important words to note here are ‘thoughts to me’ – that is\, God’s thoughts relating to the Psalmist.\nThe word translated ‘thought’ is unique in the Old Testament. It conveys the meaning of ‘association of ideas or plans’\, and it is the revealed idea or plan of God as it relates to a man.\nThe Lord has made known His will to us. He has revealed mysteries in Christ that were hidden from the foundation of the world. Now\, if the Psalmist was conscious of a Divine plan and purpose affecting his life down to the smallest detail\, should we not be aware of the same? It is those who seek God’s will for their life who know the preciousness of His Presence.

SUMMARY:"neither cold nor hot" [Revelation 3:15]
DESCRIPTION:“neither cold nor hot”. Lukewarm! Trying to be hot and cold at the same time\, but succeeding only in making an insipid mixture admired by no one. This is the Spirit’s complaint about the church in Laodicea and it is the Spirit’s complaint about many today.\nIn test cricket there is a second innings when the batsmen can hope to make good any failure in the first: in life there is only one. You will not live today again and yesterday is gone for ever.\nThe Lord deserves all our devotion and dedication. Half-heartedness is the bane of advance. The Church of Jesus Christ is built upon dedicated apostles and prophets who gave themselves wholeheartedly to the Lord.\nPresenting your body a living sacrifice is something everyone can do. Those who blaze a trail must be on fire!

SUMMARY:"His sister stood at a distance" [Exodus 2:4(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“His sister stood at a distance”. There are times when we need to stand back and let God work. Human efforts to hide Moses had run out. Now it was time for God to act. But standing back doesn’t mean out of sight. Miriam was watching to see what would happen to him. When God acted she was alert to play her part. Not only was there salvation for Moses but as a result there was deliverance for the people of Israel.\nStanding back can be hard. How we like to be in control\, getting things to happen according to our plans. But discipleship is not about human activity but a divine plan. We need to be taking our lead from the Lord\, rather than expecting Him to fall in line with us. [AP]

SUMMARY:"I go … unto Jerusalem\, not knowing the things that shall befall me" [Acts 20:22]
DESCRIPTION:“I go … unto Jerusalem\, not knowing the things that shall befall me”. It was more important for the Apostle Paul to be led by the Spirit than that he should know what was going to happen to him.\nThere are those who will not step forward until they have been given specific assurances about what will happen. The best assurance that it will be well with me tomorrow\, is that I should be led by the Spirit today. Few\, if any\, are told in detail what the future holds. The disciple must volunteer to follow Christ; he will then be told the job he has to do.\nFor this reason\, all of us need to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit\, not visionaries trying to describe the end while still at the beginning.

SUMMARY:"After seeking advice\, the king made two golden calves" [I Kings 12:28(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“After seeking advice\, the king made two golden calves”. Seeking advice is commendable: seeking and taking the wrong advice is folly. Jeroboam was crowned king over Israel. He immediately felt he had a problem – if his subjects went up to Jerusalem to worship they might revert to Rehoboam\, king of Judah. So he sought advice from his counsellors who advised him to make two golden calves to be placed in Dan and Bethel and where they would be made centres of worship.\nJeroboam could have sought advice from the Lord\, but didn’t. It’s the same today – all the good advice of men cannot equal the counsel of God. Prayer is the God-given means of finding God’s will. ‘Ask and you shall receive’ applies to guidance as much as to anything else. Those who trust the Lord are never confounded.

SUMMARY:"Come to me" [Matthew 11:28(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Come to me”. The wonder of the Gospel is not merely that we may come to the Lord\, but that He invites us to do so. And the more wretched and unworthy a person feels\, the more pressing is the invitation. Jesus came not to call righteous people: He came for sinners – the failures\, the deprived and even the rebellious. He fully discharged His part when He died on the Cross (a vicarious death adequate to discharge the sin of the world) and rose to be a living Saviour and Lord. Now he calls. ‘Come’.\nYou must come just as you are. It is unlikely that those not aware of their need will make a move. But just as tax-collectors and sinners came in His earthly ministry\, so men and women all over the world conscious of their need are coming to a living Lord Jesus today. Only when we join them will we find rest for our souls.

SUMMARY:"the sword of the Spirit" [Ephesians 6:17]
DESCRIPTION:“the sword of the Spirit”. Not a ceremonial sword to be worn when on parade.\nThe sword of the Spirit is a vital piece of the Christian’s armour. It is the God-breathed Word of God which Jesus used to cut down the Devil’s evil insinuations when tempted in the wilderness. It is the means whereby every child of God may defend himself as well as attack the evil all around him.\nDo you use the sword of the Spirit? Is God’s Word vital to you\, or is it rather like a sword that is never taken out of its sheath? It is there but you never consult it.\nIn your thought life\, when evil insinuations come uninvited\, when evil desires raise their ugly head\, in your stand against evil and in preventing the Devil from attacking others\, make full use of the sword of the Spirit.

SUMMARY:"he said\, 'Go again seven times' " [I Kings 18:43]
DESCRIPTION:“he said\, ‘Go again seven times’ “. The confrontation Elijah had with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel is well known. When these prophets had been slain\, Elijah received the assurance that the nation-wide drought was to end. He told his servant lad to go and look out for a cloud in the sky\, indicating that rain was on its way. When the lad reported nothing\, Elijah told him to go and look again seven times.\nWe are not told whether he said ‘seven times’ at the beginning or time and again until the seventh time – what matters is he kept going until a cloud was seen. Too many of us stop after the first attempt – whether in intercession\, seeking to win a soul for the Lord\, overcoming a particular obstacle or difficulty or whatever. When you don’t succeed in what God has promised at the first attempt\, ‘Go again’.

SUMMARY:"your God will be my God" [Ruth 1:16(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“your God will be my God”. It does seem as though Naomi was a person about whom\, if a Christian\, you would say\, ‘If that’s a Christian\, I want to be one’! Ruth had seen Naomi as mother in the home and as widow at the graveside. She had no doubt learned to lean and depend upon her when in deep distress. Ruth was willing to leave her homeland to be with Naomi.\nThe most important thing was that Ruth wanted a faith like that which Naomi had. She saw it was no fine weather phenomenon. And it is likely she had seen how it stood firm when her own ideas were shaken.\nThere is no evidence of compulsion on the part of Naomi – just the contrary in fact. So today\, when Christ is truly manifest in a life\, the same attraction should be experienced.

SUMMARY:"Though I walk in the midst of trouble\, you preserve my life" [Psalm 138:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Though I walk in the midst of trouble\, you preserve my life”. Few\, if any\, of us escape trouble: we don’t have to look far to see it. If it does not affect us directly it is experienced by those dear to us. Life keeps going and we need to keep walking too. We are all doing something with the hours and minutes that are given us. And trouble can cause us to make a mess of things if we let it.\nThis verse is a promise for all who love the Lord and seek to follow Him. He will keep them. This is a great comfort when folk all around you seem to be slipping and when darkness obscures the next step you take.\nThe promise encourages us to let the Lord take control of things – and that includes our troubles.

SUMMARY:"he walked on the water\, to go to Jesus" [Matthew 14:29]
DESCRIPTION:“he walked on the water\, to go to Jesus”. Very spectacular! But his walking on the water was short-lived and soon ended in beginning to sink.\nWe may not get the chance to show our trust in Jesus as Peter did when the Lord said to him “Come.” Yet we all are called to be followers in the routine of everyday life.\nWe can choose to look at wind and waves around us: if we do this we take our eyes off Jesus and begin to sink.\nAny step towards Jesus is a blessed one. He wants to come and be with us in all that we do.\nWalking on the water even at Jesus’ invitation is not as easy as it might seem!\nIt is walking over all difficulties and opposition with eyes fixed on Jesus that avoids the embarrassment of sinking.

SUMMARY:"so great salvation" [Hebrews 2:3]
DESCRIPTION:“so great salvation”. It is great because without it man had no hope whatever of extricating himself from the quagmire of sin. Great because it is all embracing. Salvation in Christ may be experienced by anyone who will believe and accept it; no means test or qualifying period. Furthermore\, it is great because there is no waiting period. No reason why you should not be saved now\, if you’re not yet converted. No striving to improve or put things right. Repent and be converted.\nGreat\, most of all because it was secured for us by the Captain of our Salvation\, the Lord Jesus Christ\, who came where we were\, allowed Himself to be made sin though He had never sinned\, was crucified\, descended into hell and then led captivity captive. No one else has done this: no one else could.

SUMMARY:"Why are we sitting here until we die? " [II Kings 7:3(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:p>“Why are we sitting here until we die? “. I think the emphasis on these words spoken by four lepers was that they were sitting doing nothing. They were waiting for something to happen\, for others to do something\, when it turned out they were to resolve the matter. Samaria was besieged and they were in no-man’s land outside the city walls. Scraps of food normally thrown to them had finished. They decided to go to the camp of the besieging Syrians and they found the Syrian army had fled leaving the camp deserted.\nSo the point to consider today is whether you are sitting doing nothing. It is easy to say that there is nothing you can do\, but it is mistaken. If you sit doing nothing\, nothing will get done and life is not to be like that!\nAsk the Lord to show you what He wants you to do.

SUMMARY:" (He) would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple" [Mark 11:16]
DESCRIPTION:” (He) would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple”. Jesus chose the occasion of His visiting the temple to protest against the desecration of the court by tradesmen. It was a day those who witnessed it would not forget.\nThings are going on today that the Christian cannot condone. There are occasions when the misuse of God’s house needs to be pointed out\, be it the body as temple of the Holy Spirit or the local church building as a place for meeting together with the Lord. The traders in question were obviously bringing commerce into the temple court because it was lucrative to do so. They put money before worship or should we say\, they worshipped money.\nBut no use merely driving the traders out: you need to be found there making it a place of prayer.

SUMMARY:"because he was of the same trade he stayed with them\, and they worked" [Acts 18:3(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“because he was of the same trade he stayed with them\, and they worked”. When staying with tent-makers Paul turned his hand with them to the craft he had learned.\nBut we are left to imagine the gist of what was said as they worked together making tents. In fact\, Paul was occupying one of the best pulpits when he sat down in the workshop and talked. His heart was full of his experience and this would be evident from his conversation.\nMore effective witness is done to the man or woman next to you at work than anywhere else. It follows that effective witness can only be done by effective witnesses\, and that might be the problem. The Apostle Paul was on fire for God and wherever he went\, things warmed up. The experience has been repeated again and again. It is worth emulating.

SUMMARY:"all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you" [Deuteronomy 28:2(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you”. So many things in life seem to be coming our way yet turn off at the last minute or disappear altogether. Not so with the blessing of the Lord upon those who love Him. Take time to read the list of blessings promised in this chapter.\nOur hope must be in the Lord. As the eye of the servant looks to his master\, so must our expectation be in the Lord. No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.\nClouds that are gathering ahead of us can make us despondent. But as we look to the Lord we see One who keeps His Word\, whose desire is towards His children and who promises that blessing will catch up with them and overtake them.

SUMMARY:"She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy" [Proverbs 31:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy”. God has given womanhood a tenderness that can be found nowhere else. Though on occasions it falls to the man to offer succour and comfort\, it is not his natural gift.\nWhile in this verse the writer is referring specially to a wife\, any woman of the house has great opportunity to extend kindness and comfort to the poor and administer help to the needy. Making the man head of the house is not enough. Unless the lady plays her God-given ministry it will be top-heavy and fall down as is seen all too often.\nA home should be for life and calls for a firm foundation\, a loving bond between all family members and the housewife depended upon to provide that compassion that will make all the family proud of her and grateful to her.

SUMMARY:"Don't bother me" [Luke 11:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Don’t bother me”. The man in Jesus’ parable appreciated his bed more than the need of his neighbour and did not want to get up and give him bread. I think we are all guilty of this at times. The good thing is that he didn’t stay that way. For one thing his friend kept knocking and calling to him until he got up and gave him what he needed.\nCertainly we should weigh carefully some of the demands made on us\, but it should be to consider how and when we should help rather than why we should not.\nAfter all\, what is the bother – interrupting our leisure or helping our friend? Remember\, being bothered is not a feeling known to our heavenly Father. Help from Him is readily available and never a bother. Don’t be restricted by ‘bother’: go out and help someone today.

SUMMARY:"there is no other God that can deliver after this sort" [Daniel 3:29]
DESCRIPTION:“there is no other God that can deliver after this sort”. These are the words of Nebuchadnezzar when the three Hebrew boys came forth from his furnace without a scorch mark on them. This kind of deliverance took everyone by surprise\, yet there is no deliverance too difficult for the Lord.\nHow you will be delivered may be puzzling you today and your burden unbearable\, but it’s not so to the Lord. Sometimes He allows us to go far beyond what we might have expected to be asked of us – just like the Hebrew boys went into the fire rather than being delivered beforehand\, something God could easily have done.\nBut this way they walked with the Lord in the fiery furnace and had this proclamation from the king. And God will bring great glory out of the trial you face today.
