SUMMARY:"Though I walk in the midst of trouble\, you preserve my life" [Psalm 138:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Though I walk in the midst of trouble\, you preserve my life”. Few\, if any\, of us escape trouble: we don’t have to look far to see it. If it does not affect us directly it is experienced by those dear to us. Life keeps going and we need to keep walking too. We are all doing something with the hours and minutes that are given us. And trouble can cause us to make a mess of things if we let it.\nThis verse is a promise for all who love the Lord and seek to follow Him. He will keep them. This is a great comfort when folk all around you seem to be slipping and when darkness obscures the next step you take.\nThe promise encourages us to let the Lord take control of things – and that includes our troubles.

SUMMARY:"he walked on the water\, to go to Jesus" [Matthew 14:29]
DESCRIPTION:“he walked on the water\, to go to Jesus”. Very spectacular! But his walking on the water was short-lived and soon ended in beginning to sink.\nWe may not get the chance to show our trust in Jesus as Peter did when the Lord said to him “Come.” Yet we all are called to be followers in the routine of everyday life.\nWe can choose to look at wind and waves around us: if we do this we take our eyes off Jesus and begin to sink.\nAny step towards Jesus is a blessed one. He wants to come and be with us in all that we do.\nWalking on the water even at Jesus’ invitation is not as easy as it might seem!\nIt is walking over all difficulties and opposition with eyes fixed on Jesus that avoids the embarrassment of sinking.

SUMMARY:"so great salvation" [Hebrews 2:3]
DESCRIPTION:“so great salvation”. It is great because without it man had no hope whatever of extricating himself from the quagmire of sin. Great because it is all embracing. Salvation in Christ may be experienced by anyone who will believe and accept it; no means test or qualifying period. Furthermore\, it is great because there is no waiting period. No reason why you should not be saved now\, if you’re not yet converted. No striving to improve or put things right. Repent and be converted.\nGreat\, most of all because it was secured for us by the Captain of our Salvation\, the Lord Jesus Christ\, who came where we were\, allowed Himself to be made sin though He had never sinned\, was crucified\, descended into hell and then led captivity captive. No one else has done this: no one else could.

SUMMARY:"Why are we sitting here until we die? " [II Kings 7:3(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:p>“Why are we sitting here until we die? “. I think the emphasis on these words spoken by four lepers was that they were sitting doing nothing. They were waiting for something to happen\, for others to do something\, when it turned out they were to resolve the matter. Samaria was besieged and they were in no-man’s land outside the city walls. Scraps of food normally thrown to them had finished. They decided to go to the camp of the besieging Syrians and they found the Syrian army had fled leaving the camp deserted.\nSo the point to consider today is whether you are sitting doing nothing. It is easy to say that there is nothing you can do\, but it is mistaken. If you sit doing nothing\, nothing will get done and life is not to be like that!\nAsk the Lord to show you what He wants you to do.

SUMMARY:" (He) would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple" [Mark 11:16]
DESCRIPTION:” (He) would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple”. Jesus chose the occasion of His visiting the temple to protest against the desecration of the court by tradesmen. It was a day those who witnessed it would not forget.\nThings are going on today that the Christian cannot condone. There are occasions when the misuse of God’s house needs to be pointed out\, be it the body as temple of the Holy Spirit or the local church building as a place for meeting together with the Lord. The traders in question were obviously bringing commerce into the temple court because it was lucrative to do so. They put money before worship or should we say\, they worshipped money.\nBut no use merely driving the traders out: you need to be found there making it a place of prayer.

SUMMARY:"because he was of the same trade he stayed with them\, and they worked" [Acts 18:3(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“because he was of the same trade he stayed with them\, and they worked”. When staying with tent-makers Paul turned his hand with them to the craft he had learned.\nBut we are left to imagine the gist of what was said as they worked together making tents. In fact\, Paul was occupying one of the best pulpits when he sat down in the workshop and talked. His heart was full of his experience and this would be evident from his conversation.\nMore effective witness is done to the man or woman next to you at work than anywhere else. It follows that effective witness can only be done by effective witnesses\, and that might be the problem. The Apostle Paul was on fire for God and wherever he went\, things warmed up. The experience has been repeated again and again. It is worth emulating.

SUMMARY:"all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you" [Deuteronomy 28:2(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you”. So many things in life seem to be coming our way yet turn off at the last minute or disappear altogether. Not so with the blessing of the Lord upon those who love Him. Take time to read the list of blessings promised in this chapter.\nOur hope must be in the Lord. As the eye of the servant looks to his master\, so must our expectation be in the Lord. No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.\nClouds that are gathering ahead of us can make us despondent. But as we look to the Lord we see One who keeps His Word\, whose desire is towards His children and who promises that blessing will catch up with them and overtake them.

SUMMARY:"She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy" [Proverbs 31:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy”. God has given womanhood a tenderness that can be found nowhere else. Though on occasions it falls to the man to offer succour and comfort\, it is not his natural gift.\nWhile in this verse the writer is referring specially to a wife\, any woman of the house has great opportunity to extend kindness and comfort to the poor and administer help to the needy. Making the man head of the house is not enough. Unless the lady plays her God-given ministry it will be top-heavy and fall down as is seen all too often.\nA home should be for life and calls for a firm foundation\, a loving bond between all family members and the housewife depended upon to provide that compassion that will make all the family proud of her and grateful to her.

SUMMARY:"Don't bother me" [Luke 11:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Don’t bother me”. The man in Jesus’ parable appreciated his bed more than the need of his neighbour and did not want to get up and give him bread. I think we are all guilty of this at times. The good thing is that he didn’t stay that way. For one thing his friend kept knocking and calling to him until he got up and gave him what he needed.\nCertainly we should weigh carefully some of the demands made on us\, but it should be to consider how and when we should help rather than why we should not.\nAfter all\, what is the bother – interrupting our leisure or helping our friend? Remember\, being bothered is not a feeling known to our heavenly Father. Help from Him is readily available and never a bother. Don’t be restricted by ‘bother’: go out and help someone today.

SUMMARY:"there is no other God that can deliver after this sort" [Daniel 3:29]
DESCRIPTION:“there is no other God that can deliver after this sort”. These are the words of Nebuchadnezzar when the three Hebrew boys came forth from his furnace without a scorch mark on them. This kind of deliverance took everyone by surprise\, yet there is no deliverance too difficult for the Lord.\nHow you will be delivered may be puzzling you today and your burden unbearable\, but it’s not so to the Lord. Sometimes He allows us to go far beyond what we might have expected to be asked of us – just like the Hebrew boys went into the fire rather than being delivered beforehand\, something God could easily have done.\nBut this way they walked with the Lord in the fiery furnace and had this proclamation from the king. And God will bring great glory out of the trial you face today.

SUMMARY:"the power of his resurrection" [Philippians 3:10]
DESCRIPTION:“the power of his resurrection”. Jesus spoke about the resurrection many times. Our teaching must not diminish its importance.\nTen times it is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles and many times in the teaching of the Epistles. All who pass through this life are heading towards the resurrection.\nFor centuries now those called to be saints\, the followers of Jesus have been asleep in Jesus waiting for that morning that shall awaken the sleepers\, change the waiting ones and our eyes shall behold the King in His glory and splendour.\nJesus is the resurrection. Those who love Him must live looking for His glorious appearing. It will take the resurrection to show us just what Jesus has for His saints. For those who love Him it will be ‘forever with the Lord.’

SUMMARY:"they … expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly" [Acts 18:26]
DESCRIPTION:“they … expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly”. What a delightful couple Aquila and Priscilla must have been! Apollos was a talented orator and obviously zealous for God. He had a persuasive and winning way that quickly gained him a following. But Aquila and Priscilla\, older and more grounded in the faith spotted some quite serious shortcomings in Apollos’ teaching. Instead of making a public issue of these they took Apollos to one side and counselled him. Rather than dampen his enthusiasm\, they pointed him to a fuller gospel and made him a better witness thereby.\nIf you are experienced in the way of the Lord\, are you helping beginners? If you have only recently begun and are doing well\, are you still teachable? Here is a happy combination that we should see repeated more often today.

SUMMARY:"And when they saw him\, they worshipped him" [Matthew 28:17]
DESCRIPTION:“And when they saw him\, they worshipped him”. You can only truly worship the Lord when you see Him. It will be the eye of faith\, and there will be those who doubt\, but your heart will pour out worship and thanks to the Lord when you recognise His great love for you. This is not a theological concept but a practical experience.\nSight of Jesus\, resurrected and glorified after His suffering and death for our sin brings peace to the troubled soul\, forgiveness to the wayward and inspiration to devotion and service.\nWorship is the highest activity and lifts the worshipper out of his or her surroundings. Seek to see and worship Jesus today.

SUMMARY:"Search me\, O God\, and know my heart" [Psalm 139:23]
DESCRIPTION:“Search me\, O God\, and know my heart”. We are encouraged to submit ourselves to health checks of one form or another. When something irregular is found\, specialist advice is sought to correct what is wrong. Yet how many\, even among those who acknowledge the Person of God\, pray the Psalmist’s prayer in earnest?\nInstead\, we try to conceal the inner chambers of our heart from His all-seeing eye. How much blessing we miss\, how much joy\, love and fellowship we lose because we fail to get a regular heart check with the Lord!\nWhen the Psalmist prayed “Know my heart”\, he meant God to be in control of it and to direct it. Adam hid from God because the linking line of obedience and trust had broken. For the same reason men hide from God today. Only by allowing God to search your heart will you be led in the way everlasting.

DESCRIPTION:“”He has brought us to this place”. After rehearsing God’s dealing with His People\, Moses is here showing them the manner in which they should come before the Lord with the offering of their firstfruits.\nIt was important that they should recognise that the Lord had brought them to the place where they now were. It is the same today. You are either where you are by the grace of God or in the wrong place!\nBut acknowledging that the Lord has brought you here causes thanksgiving to arise and praise for His greatness to you. It also encourages you to look with confidence to Him to keep your steps in the days that lie ahead.\nLooking to the future can be quite depressing: looking to the Lord will ever cause you to rejoice in His goodness.

SUMMARY:"full assurance" [Hebrews 10:22]
DESCRIPTION:“full assurance”. God wants everyone who trusts in the death and resurrection of His Son\, Jesus\, to be assured of their salvation. It is finished and complete.\nIf you are hoping that the good things you do will assure you of a place in heaven you will never have full assurance. No assurance means that you can only hope. If you are in any way trusting in what you do\, you have not understood the first thing about God the Father sending His Son to be our Saviour.\nIf any effort\, or extra effort could have saved a soul\, Jesus need never have come. SUMMARY:"Then the disciples went away again unto their own home" [John 20:10]
DESCRIPTION:“Then the disciples went away again unto their own home”. After finding the tomb empty\, Peter and John went home.\nIt would be good if more of us went home and thought about what had happened instead of rushing frantically here and there – if we thought about our life and where it is going\, what it is accomplishing.\nMemory often functions best when at home and in familiar surroundings. The Holy Spirit speaks to the listening ear and directs the sensitive heart. Jesus said that when we want to talk to our heavenly Father we should go away in secret. Peter and John set us the pattern when they did just that.\nSome things don’t add up straightaway\, we need to go home and think about them. Sort out the jumble from what is useful.

SUMMARY:"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead" [I Corinthians 15:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead”. Doubt it or argue against it\, you cannot change the reality of what took place on that first Resurrection Sunday. What a glorious ‘but’ this is! It makes an eternal difference. Christ was raised ‘out from amongst the dead’ and one day we shall rise ‘out from amongst the dead’ to meet Him when He comes again.\nBecause He lives\, we shall live also and our resurrected bodies will be like His glorious body. Christ died and was buried\, yet the grave could not hold Him and He burst forth\, triumphant over sin and death. Others were raised back to life only to die again\, but as a result of Christ’s resurrection\, death is not the end but the start of a new life as God intended it to be. Hallelujah! Christ is risen!

SUMMARY:"he was buried" [I Corinthians 15:4]
DESCRIPTION:“he was buried”. The burial of Christ completes His death. It was not just an act of kindness; it was confirmation that the act of atonement had truly happened. The wages of sin had been paid. The wrath of God had been appeased. The work of Christ had been completed. The enemies of God had done their worst. The blackest day in all history was over. But that is not all. The old covenant that fell short was also buried. A new covenant was about to dawn. From the gloom of the grave the Light of the world would arise victorious. For all who will follow Christ the old life must be buried if we are to know the new life He gives. However painful it might be\, it is important and necessary if we are to have the life of Christ within.

DESCRIPTION:“he was reckoned among the transgressors”. What do we learn from this description of the Son of God?\nFirst\, things are not always as they appear. A glance towards Golgotha on that fateful day may have given the impression of three criminals being crucified. Closer examination shows One to be the Son of God.\nSecondly\, it reveals the depths to which Jesus had to descend to save us. Not only did He leave the glory of heaven and suffer the rebuttal of men\, He was labelled a common villain.\nThirdly\, this was the price paid to secure for us a salvation beyond price. The sin of the world was heaped upon Him and He ‘became sin for us’. If He was to atone for sin\, he must be reckoned a sinner by all concerned.\nThis becomes a glorious truth when you can say ‘Yes\, He took my sin and set me gloriously free’.

SUMMARY:"they made ready the passover" [Luke 22:13]
DESCRIPTION:“they made ready the passover”. Some preparation is needed if we are to glean the most from special occasions. (On some occasions\, of course\, the Lord does delight to bless by surprise.)\nJesus told His disciples to make ready the passover\, nominating the place where they were to meet\, and they did so. If we would find what God requires of us by way of preparation and make ready\, His blessing might sink deeper into our needy souls. Any meeting with God which we know about beforehand deserves some preparation on our part. The Passover feast was ordained to commemorate the great exodus of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt.\nAny commemoration should be a rededication. Our God is not only Lord of what is past\, He is Lord of today and we need to experience His mighty deliverance now.

SUMMARY:"as thy days\, so shall thy strength be" [Deuteronomy 33:25]
DESCRIPTION:“as thy days\, so shall thy strength be”. So it is not a matter of how long your strength will last\, but that God will give you strength enough for today.\nThe Lord gives us life a day at a time – you may plan for tomorrow and if those plans work out\, look to the Lord for needed strength.\nSo while you may feel weak and inadequate for the new challenge set before you\, it is strength for today that is all you need today. Strength is something you use\, not that you store up. If you are waiting for a week’s strength before doing a day’s work you are likely to be missing out on opportunities set before you.\nBest of all\, the Lord knows just what you need and he will provide. It is a daily drawing of strength we need to make. [AP]

SUMMARY:"Neither do I condemn you" [John 8:11(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Neither do I condemn you”. It is unfortunate that modern scholarship has removed the incident of the woman taken in adultery from some modern translations. However\, many of us preached on it with great blessing before most of these versions were published.\nThe marvellous thing is that Jesus did not condemn the adulteress. She feared He would\, her accusers hoped He would\, but He didn’t. God so loved the world of sinners that in spite of their sin He gave His Only begotten Son. It was a great day for this woman to know Jesus did not condemn her because she had broken the 7th Commandment.\nJesus would have condemned her if she had not accepted His forgiveness. He once said ‘this is the condemnation\, that light is come into the world\, but men loved darkness’. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.

SUMMARY:"you will not always have me" [Mark 14:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you will not always have me”. Jesus defended Mary’s action saying that pouring perfume upon His head as He sat at table in a home in Bethany was a beautiful thing to do. All could enjoy the fragrance.\nShe had taken the opportunity when it was presented to her. The criticism that the perfume could have been sold and the money benefit the poor was dismissed by Jesus because the poor could be helped every day whereas this lady would not have this opportunity every day. Have we our jar of expensive perfume ready – a heart filled with love for Jesus? So that when the Holy Spirit moves us to recognise that Jesus is near\, we can be ready to unlock our heart and pour out our expression of love for Jesus and worship the Lord in spirit and truth.

SUMMARY:"The Lord needs it" [Luke 19:31(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The Lord needs it”. Whether by prior arrangement or not\, this colt was available for the Lord to use and bring glory to God as He rode into Jerusalem. It provided more than a means of transport and served to illustrate the servant-hood of Christ. It had never been ridden before but bore the Lord of glory to a cross of shame. It belonged to another but carried the Saviour of the world to redeem mankind from sin and death. It was untied so that it could take the weight of the One who would set people free. If a lowly colt is able to serve the Lord in this way\, how much more can we bring glory to Jesus if we remain available for Him to use as He has need?

SUMMARY:"our Lord Jesus Christ" [Galatians 1:3]
DESCRIPTION:“our Lord Jesus Christ”. Three wonderful truths about our Lord Jesus Christ:\n1. He gave Himself for our sins – unbelievably good news when you realise the way sin drags us down and that we\n were of ourselves helpless to do anything about it.\n2. That He might deliver us from this present evil world – what a glorious prospect for those vexed with what they see and\n hear happening around us\, as Lot was in his day.\n3. It is God’s will that Jesus should save us and deliver us. In no way does the Son have to apologise for bringing home\n sinners who have been wandering away. It is God’s will that all who repent and turn to Christ be admitted to the\n kingdom of heaven.\nIn the light of this\, we can join the Apostle and say\, ‘To our Lord Jesus Christ be glory for ever and ever’.

SUMMARY:"some of them became obstinate\, they refused to believe" [Acts 19:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“some of them became obstinate\, they refused to believe”. No matter how attractive the gospel message or how illustrious those who preach it\, those who do not respond to it are likely to be hardened by it. The Church of Jesus Christ has grown through those who have responded\, not on the doubters and dissenters.\nThe world is a great harvest field\, as Jesus said\, but when the message is refused\, the evangelist must go and offer his treasures to others. This is just what Paul and his companions did. He left off preaching to the critics in the synagogues and began ministry to a group in the nearby school of Tyrannus. There they experienced great joy and blessing. Be obstinate and you’ll find you can’t believe. Be receptive and find you enjoy the blessing of God more and more.

SUMMARY:"for there was joy in Israel" [I Chronicles 12:40(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“for there was joy in Israel”. This was because they (Israel) had a godly leader. When the leader is appointed by the Lord\, joy in one form or another is the experience of those so led.\nThe way all kinds of men swore allegiance to David from every corner of the kingdom was a joy to behold.\nThe sense of purpose coupled with the prospect of removing the intrigue and corruption prevalent in the latter part of Saul’s reign made for joy among the people.\nIndeed\, it was only when David left his pristine love and devotion for the Lord that this joy began to wane.\nThis is a picture of the followers of the Lord in our day. When disciples all over the world love the Lord and engage in His service it is a cause for joy. As long as we refuse to be deflected from Jesus\, it will stay that way.

SUMMARY:"would you wait …? " [Ruth 1:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“would you wait …? “. The prospect was for Ruth or Orpah to wait while their mother-in-law found a husband\, bore him children who grew to become their husbands. It was never a serious proposition! Yet many are waiting for what is equally unlikely to happen.\nBecause of an isolated instance\, or a daydream or wishful thinking they spend all their life waiting – waiting for a call that never comes or outside a door that never opens. Ruth neither waited nor went back.\nShe made Naomi’s God her God and moved forward into a new experience the Lord had for her and it was later remarked that she was worth more than seven sons to Naomi. Don’t wait when the Lord says ‘Come’.

SUMMARY:"by chance" [Luke 10:31]
DESCRIPTION:“by chance”. This is the reason given for a priest to be passing by when a man lay robbed and wounded by the roadside. The Levite who passed by was the same. Both men declined the opportunity to help.\n“By chance” or “so it happened” are descriptions we give when we did not plan it beforehand. Absence of planning is no excuse for neglecting to attend to needs. Opportunities to do good or to speak a word of comfort or to bear testimony to the grace of God present themselves unexpectedly. Be ready for them.\nThe Good Samaritan was observant (he saw the victim)\, compassionate (he had compassion)\, responsive (he went to him\, bound up his wounds) and caring (he took him to the inn and paid expenses). Be like him whenever you can.
