SUMMARY:"they made ready the passover" [Luke 22:13]
DESCRIPTION:“they made ready the passover”. Some preparation is needed if we are to glean the most from special occasions. (On some occasions\, of course\, the Lord does delight to bless by surprise.)\nJesus told His disciples to make ready the passover\, nominating the place where they were to meet\, and they did so. If we would find what God requires of us by way of preparation and make ready\, His blessing might sink deeper into our needy souls. Any meeting with God which we know about beforehand deserves some preparation on our part. The Passover feast was ordained to commemorate the great exodus of Israel out of the bondage of Egypt.\nAny commemoration should be a rededication. Our God is not only Lord of what is past\, He is Lord of today and we need to experience His mighty deliverance now.

SUMMARY:"as thy days\, so shall thy strength be" [Deuteronomy 33:25]
DESCRIPTION:“as thy days\, so shall thy strength be”. So it is not a matter of how long your strength will last\, but that God will give you strength enough for today.\nThe Lord gives us life a day at a time – you may plan for tomorrow and if those plans work out\, look to the Lord for needed strength.\nSo while you may feel weak and inadequate for the new challenge set before you\, it is strength for today that is all you need today. Strength is something you use\, not that you store up. If you are waiting for a week’s strength before doing a day’s work you are likely to be missing out on opportunities set before you.\nBest of all\, the Lord knows just what you need and he will provide. It is a daily drawing of strength we need to make. [AP]

SUMMARY:"Neither do I condemn you" [John 8:11(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Neither do I condemn you”. It is unfortunate that modern scholarship has removed the incident of the woman taken in adultery from some modern translations. However\, many of us preached on it with great blessing before most of these versions were published.\nThe marvellous thing is that Jesus did not condemn the adulteress. She feared He would\, her accusers hoped He would\, but He didn’t. God so loved the world of sinners that in spite of their sin He gave His Only begotten Son. It was a great day for this woman to know Jesus did not condemn her because she had broken the 7th Commandment.\nJesus would have condemned her if she had not accepted His forgiveness. He once said ‘this is the condemnation\, that light is come into the world\, but men loved darkness’. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus.

SUMMARY:"you will not always have me" [Mark 14:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you will not always have me”. Jesus defended Mary’s action saying that pouring perfume upon His head as He sat at table in a home in Bethany was a beautiful thing to do. All could enjoy the fragrance.\nShe had taken the opportunity when it was presented to her. The criticism that the perfume could have been sold and the money benefit the poor was dismissed by Jesus because the poor could be helped every day whereas this lady would not have this opportunity every day. Have we our jar of expensive perfume ready – a heart filled with love for Jesus? So that when the Holy Spirit moves us to recognise that Jesus is near\, we can be ready to unlock our heart and pour out our expression of love for Jesus and worship the Lord in spirit and truth.

SUMMARY:"The Lord needs it" [Luke 19:31(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The Lord needs it”. Whether by prior arrangement or not\, this colt was available for the Lord to use and bring glory to God as He rode into Jerusalem. It provided more than a means of transport and served to illustrate the servant-hood of Christ. It had never been ridden before but bore the Lord of glory to a cross of shame. It belonged to another but carried the Saviour of the world to redeem mankind from sin and death. It was untied so that it could take the weight of the One who would set people free. If a lowly colt is able to serve the Lord in this way\, how much more can we bring glory to Jesus if we remain available for Him to use as He has need?

SUMMARY:"our Lord Jesus Christ" [Galatians 1:3]
DESCRIPTION:“our Lord Jesus Christ”. Three wonderful truths about our Lord Jesus Christ:\n1. He gave Himself for our sins – unbelievably good news when you realise the way sin drags us down and that we\n were of ourselves helpless to do anything about it.\n2. That He might deliver us from this present evil world – what a glorious prospect for those vexed with what they see and\n hear happening around us\, as Lot was in his day.\n3. It is God’s will that Jesus should save us and deliver us. In no way does the Son have to apologise for bringing home\n sinners who have been wandering away. It is God’s will that all who repent and turn to Christ be admitted to the\n kingdom of heaven.\nIn the light of this\, we can join the Apostle and say\, ‘To our Lord Jesus Christ be glory for ever and ever’.

SUMMARY:"some of them became obstinate\, they refused to believe" [Acts 19:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“some of them became obstinate\, they refused to believe”. No matter how attractive the gospel message or how illustrious those who preach it\, those who do not respond to it are likely to be hardened by it. The Church of Jesus Christ has grown through those who have responded\, not on the doubters and dissenters.\nThe world is a great harvest field\, as Jesus said\, but when the message is refused\, the evangelist must go and offer his treasures to others. This is just what Paul and his companions did. He left off preaching to the critics in the synagogues and began ministry to a group in the nearby school of Tyrannus. There they experienced great joy and blessing. Be obstinate and you’ll find you can’t believe. Be receptive and find you enjoy the blessing of God more and more.

SUMMARY:"for there was joy in Israel" [I Chronicles 12:40(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“for there was joy in Israel”. This was because they (Israel) had a godly leader. When the leader is appointed by the Lord\, joy in one form or another is the experience of those so led.\nThe way all kinds of men swore allegiance to David from every corner of the kingdom was a joy to behold.\nThe sense of purpose coupled with the prospect of removing the intrigue and corruption prevalent in the latter part of Saul’s reign made for joy among the people.\nIndeed\, it was only when David left his pristine love and devotion for the Lord that this joy began to wane.\nThis is a picture of the followers of the Lord in our day. When disciples all over the world love the Lord and engage in His service it is a cause for joy. As long as we refuse to be deflected from Jesus\, it will stay that way.

SUMMARY:"would you wait …? " [Ruth 1:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“would you wait …? “. The prospect was for Ruth or Orpah to wait while their mother-in-law found a husband\, bore him children who grew to become their husbands. It was never a serious proposition! Yet many are waiting for what is equally unlikely to happen.\nBecause of an isolated instance\, or a daydream or wishful thinking they spend all their life waiting – waiting for a call that never comes or outside a door that never opens. Ruth neither waited nor went back.\nShe made Naomi’s God her God and moved forward into a new experience the Lord had for her and it was later remarked that she was worth more than seven sons to Naomi. Don’t wait when the Lord says ‘Come’.

SUMMARY:"by chance" [Luke 10:31]
DESCRIPTION:“by chance”. This is the reason given for a priest to be passing by when a man lay robbed and wounded by the roadside. The Levite who passed by was the same. Both men declined the opportunity to help.\n“By chance” or “so it happened” are descriptions we give when we did not plan it beforehand. Absence of planning is no excuse for neglecting to attend to needs. Opportunities to do good or to speak a word of comfort or to bear testimony to the grace of God present themselves unexpectedly. Be ready for them.\nThe Good Samaritan was observant (he saw the victim)\, compassionate (he had compassion)\, responsive (he went to him\, bound up his wounds) and caring (he took him to the inn and paid expenses). Be like him whenever you can.

SUMMARY:"So I prayed to the God of heaven" [Nehemiah 2:4]
DESCRIPTION:“So I prayed to the God of heaven”. Nehemiah embarked upon a course that could have ended in his dismissal from royal service under Artaxerxes the Persian king. He allowed his concern for the plight of his people hundreds of miles away in Jerusalem to affect his countenance and thereby his behaviour as the king’s cupbearer. When challenged by the king to give reason for his sadness and before seeking to answer\, he made one of those quick reaction prayers that only those who walk in the Spirit can produce. And because of his integrity before God\, the prayer reached the throne of heaven and the whole narrative recorded in the Book of Nehemiah is the outcome.\nMight not more be achieved in our lives today if we resorted to the same habit of praying before we answered?

SUMMARY:"O give thanks unto the Lord" [Psalm 136:1]
DESCRIPTION:“O give thanks unto the Lord”. Everything a man has is from the Lord. The Lord made us and in every breath we take the Lord sustains us. All that brings true pleasure and delight to our heart is provided by Him. The blessing of friends and loved ones is part of His loving care. Every engagement and activity into which we can profitably throw ourselves\, the satisfaction and feeling of well-being and achievement\, the sense of love and of sharing – these are all qualities afforded us by the Sovereign Lord.\nBut the Psalmist is not merely enjoining us to be thankful. This is a spontaneous exclamation from his own thankful heart: he does not need the goodness of the Lord pointed out to him – he is experiencing it. Be so thankful to the Lord that others will want to join you in your experience.

SUMMARY:"they did not pursue it through faith\, but as if it were based on works" [Romans 9:32(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they did not pursue it through faith\, but as if it were based on works”. The subject is righteousness before God:- the Apostle Paul is describing the Israelites who sought to attain to that position by keeping the Law. There are those today who see keeping the law as the way to attain righteousness. Many of these will concede they feel little hope of achieving it. Others compare themselves with those around them and\, assuming that some will pass the test\, they consider their chances as good as\, if not better\, than average.\nBoth classes are blinded to the truth. God sent His Son as Saviour because man by his own effort cannot save himself. Seek the Lord: find in Him One who is ready and able to save you and then put your faith in Him. Know the righteousness which is of God by faith.

SUMMARY:"a new song" [Revelation 14:3]
DESCRIPTION:p>“a new song”. The wise man in Ecclesiastes wrote that there is nothing new under the sun – knowing this saves a lot of running ‘to and fro’ after every so-called ‘new’ thing.\nBut he was not conversant with the Psalmist who spoke of a new song in his mouth\, even praise to the Lord. Neither did he know that the glorified Saviour was to stand in the final chapter of the Book and say\, ‘Behold I make all things new’.\nThose described in this chapter stood upon Mount Zion with the Father’s name in their foreheads. The rudiments of that new song\, known only by the redeemed\, took shape on earth. ‘Born anew’ means born in a manner that will never die. The knowledge of this coupled with sin forgiven starts a song of never-ending joy. You can catch bits of it now!

SUMMARY:"But who do you say that I am? " [Matthew 16:15(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But who do you say that I am? “. Jesus was interested in what Peter thought. It is easy to be influenced by the opinion of the majority. Democracy is based upon accepting the voice of the majority.\nBut when it comes to receiving and trusting Christ it is accepting a minority verdict and a narrow way.\nIf you are ruled by what most people think you will not know Jesus as the Christ\, the Son of the living God: you will either be opinionless or any opinion you hold will not affect your life.\nBut if you make your own decisions and if you recognise that Jesus is Lord\, that is the work of the Holy Spirit making known the things of Christ to you. Jesus told Peter that flesh and blood had not revealed this to him.\nCan you\, do you\, say who He is? This is the message your brother is waiting for.

DESCRIPTION:“could sling a stone at a hair and not miss”. One can imagine the practice session for these left-handed slingshots. Hairs strung out at various distances tested their accuracy and competence. We are told that they did not miss. It reflected their dedication and practice.\nServing the Lord is not about choosing the easy option or having a casual attitude. It’s about putting him first and giving\, doing\, the best we can. You and I may not be the smartest or the cleverest but we can still give the best of our abilities to the Lord. The quality of our service will reflect the quality of our love. Ephesians encourages us to ‘serve wholeheartedly’. The Letter to the Romans speaks of giving ourselves ‘fully to the work of the Lord’. Let’s give the Lord the very best we have. [AP]

DESCRIPTION:“take heed to yourselves”. All the signs that now adorn our highways are of little use unless the traveller heeds them. Likewise\, good words of counsel God gives His children are only of use when put into practice. God promises to come into any life that seeks Him and bring blessing\, but that life must take heed it receives and keeps His gift.\nThe Devil is a roaring lion going about seeking to catch and ensnare the child of God. It behoves each one to take heed they do not fall in a pit he has dug for them.\nGod’s Word is a balance to your soul whatever strait or difficulty you are in\, but you need to take heed that you properly apply it.\nWe recognise the need to maintain our equipment: should we not pay more attention to the operator?

SUMMARY:"You created my inmost being" [Psalm 139:13 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You created my inmost being”. Most of us are prepared to acknowledge that God created the heavens and the earth. We pass lightly over the fact that He created us right to the very core or centre of our being. Recalling this truth will show us the folly of thinking we will confine the Lord to the outer layers of our heart.\nGod has been intimately involved in your life since conception in your mother’s womb. The wonder of birth and the human body should cause us to praise God.\nWhen a man\, woman\, boy or girl admits the Lord into their heart it is admitting the Creator into His creature\, the Master into His temple. That is why the life with God at the centre is the only one that knows a truly fulfilled experience.

SUMMARY:"the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals\, harps and lyres" [Nehemiah 12:27(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:p>“the Levites were sought out from where they lived and were brought to Jerusalem to celebrate joyfully\n the dedication with songs of thanksgiving and with the music of cymbals\, harps and lyres”. So it was in Nehemiah’s day and so it should be today. Joyful Christians are always in demand – not only in worship services\, but in workshops\, schools and homes.\nTrue joy comes from the heart: it is not put on. The world’s sadness – and there is much of it – cannot be assuaged by the sinner’s mirth. It can be lifted by the Saviour’s joy and that must be seen in the Christian. The Lord is looking for joyful people\, too. He expects His People to come before His Presence with gladness. He paid a great price to redeem them and He is continually working for their good. They should be glad about it.

SUMMARY:"If any man have ears to hear\, let him hear" [Mark 4:23]
DESCRIPTION:“If any man have ears to hear\, let him hear”. These words of Jesus make clear the responsibility everyman has to use his ears.\nThere is more in life than material and financial gain and greater pursuits than pleasure\, success\, fame and amusement. The Word of God addresses a higher spiritual plane than any other book. The claims of Christ are paramount. The Son of God came to die to save all who would believe. The message He proclaimed is recorded in full in the Scriptures. Do you hear\, do you believe?\nThe Holy Spirit would instruct and teach the way God would have His followers live. Do you hear\, do you put into practice? Jesus means us to hear His voice now – use the day to unstop deaf ears.

SUMMARY:"Your eyes ... will see the land that is very far off" [Isaiah 33:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Your eyes … will see the land that is very far off”. This prophecy was given by Isaiah to the besieged inhabitants of Jerusalem where king Hezekiah and his suffering people longed for deliverance. It speaks prophetically to everyone who loves Jesus\, of the land of heaven and God’s eternal kingdom.\nWhen surrounded by the anxieties of this life in its day to day struggle\, heaven may indeed seem far off. Sometimes the valley through which we travel is so dark and deep we wonder whether heaven exists at all or if we shall reach it.\nYet the very pathway that takes us to that land is strewn with blessing and refreshment to help the faithful on their way. And “very far off” might be quite misleading. Jesus used the words “in a little while” for heaven is only a heart-beat away.

SUMMARY:"Repent\, and believe in the gospel" [Mark 1:15(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Repent\, and believe in the gospel”. Have we emphasised the need to have faith and believe in Christ at the expense of neglecting the first step of repentance? Jesus tells us to repent and believe.\nBelieving without repenting may bring short-term blessing but it can make for disillusionment. All who would be saved need to turn away from their sinful way and look to the Lord. No-one can adequately believe until they look to Christ and you cannot look until you turn around.\nOnly faith built on repentance can produce a changed life and a new creation that will withstand the onslaught of the devil.\nRepentance is preparing for a thorough renovation brought about by believing in Jesus\, calling upon the Lord and having the assurance of salvation.

SUMMARY:"I come to you in the name of the Lord" [I Samuel 17:45(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I come to you in the name of the Lord”. David with his stones and sling must have looked very vulnerable against the armour-clad giant\, Goliath. Five smooth stones seemed little match for a coat of mail weighing 5\,000 shekels of bronze. Yet\, as in all of life’s conflicts\, appearances can be deceptive. The exchange of words between these two give us a better evaluation.\nGoliath boasted of his great stature and the strength he had in his armour. He had big faith in human frailty. Most telling\, he defied the armies of the living God.\nDavid had practically nothing other than past experience of God’s deliverance and present trust in Him now.\nReflect and see where your trust is as you go forth to fight the battles of this day. You should have no doubt where real success is found.

SUMMARY:"They that sow in tears shall reap in joy" [Psalm 126:5]
DESCRIPTION:“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy”. It should be pointed out at once that this is not a promise for all who weep. It is for those who sow seeds of righteousness and water them with their tears. Seeing the need\, they pray about it and do what they can to meet it. The burden of that need makes them bathe their prayer in tears – it may be the tears of a mother heartbroken at the wayward-ness of her son\, of a disciple who longs for his friend to find Christ or of one grieving for his sin. Strong crying with tears is needed to break the strong grip of the Evil One upon a life or situation.\nSowing in tears indicates an earnestness that prayer will be answered and that God will intervene: they are the tears that precede victory\, they make a request that the Lord cannot refuse. The answer may not appear at once\, but in harvest they shall reap with joy.

SUMMARY:"Lord\, remember me" [Luke 23:42]
DESCRIPTION:“Lord\, remember me”. What was there to remember about him? His life as a robber? It was not his transformed life since conversion – he had none. He could not move a muscle – he was pinned to the cross\, yet he had as great a conversion as anyone.\nThat any idea of Christ’s kingdom was far removed from the awful scene of crucifixion did not seem to trouble him.\nJesus was going to claim His kingdom and he had the honour of dying beside Him – suffering on a cross.\nHe didn’t need theology\, a class for beginners\, and extension of life: these were impossible now. He did have a heart and he gave it to Jesus and received an assurance as blessed as any. You have a heart too\, no matter what else you may not have or know. Give it to Jesus.

SUMMARY:"you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck" [Daniel 5:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck”. Daniel was also promised a position as third ruler in the kingdom. But these were of no interest to Daniel.\nBelshazzar had the sentence of death hanging upon him: his kingdom that he promised to share with Daniel would be wrenched from him before the night was out.\nAs Jesus said many years later\, it is gaining the whole world at the cost of losing your own soul.\nAs you look out into the world today there may be many attractive offers – realise they are worthless if they draw you away from the truth of the gospel. Indeed\, they are harmful when they prevent you from entering the kingdom of heaven.\nBe like Daniel and tell the world to keep its enticements.

SUMMARY:"God charges no one with wrongdoing" [Job 24:12(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“God charges no one with wrongdoing”. That was Job’s opinion when trying to reason his way out of the distress that beset him. Job was commenting on the way that God had not yet preferred a charge for wrong-doing in the lives of those who seemed to go through life godlessly and free from restraint.\nIt is a mistake to think God is not there because He does not immediately execute punishment on evil-doers. And it is equally erroneous to conclude that God is not interested in our small requests because He does not act or answer in the way we expect.\nThe Judgment Day is coming when all who have gone their own way in life without Him will be called to account. The charges then will be many. Faith and trust now will avoid judgment then.

SUMMARY:"all Israel shouted with a great shout" [I Samuel 4:5]
DESCRIPTION:“all Israel shouted with a great shout”. It isn’t the amount of noise we make that counts\, but what we are doing that is important. The Israelites had been smitten in battle by the Philistines. So they fetched the ark of the covenant from Shiloh where it should be kept and brought it into the camp. It was then they shouted\, thinking the Lord had come among them. They were mistaken.\nTheir shout only spurred on the Philistines to greater determination and thirty thousand footmen were slain in the battle that ensued. So rather than a shout\, it is obedience to the Lord and quiet confidence in Him that is needed. The shout of triumph in which the people of the Lord engage is not to be confused with misguided actions of disobedience.

SUMMARY:"He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly" [II Corinthians 9:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly”. It comes down to the adage we all know yet patently fail to practice\, namely that what we do today decides what we will have tomorrow.\nWe try to believe that we can start afresh tomorrow. But when tomorrow comes we find we are building upon today whether we want to do so or not.\nSo a good harvest tomorrow calls for generous sowing today. This applies to all areas of our life.\nThe Apostle Paul was thinking especially of the calling to discipleship that the believer has. Your life and mine have more in them than work\, recreation and sleep. Our life should be locked into that purpose for which God made us who we are. And we should be busy doing the job given us.

SUMMARY:"Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? " [Job 40:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? “. Some attempt to bring the Sovereign Lord down to our level\, both in our address and our attitude. It is a familiarity that can breed contention if not contempt.\nThe mistake can arise from the fact that Jesus mingled and ate and drank with the common people of His day. But while He was one with them He was never one of them. He was separate from sinners. Rather than treat Him as a mere man\, both disciples and multitude marvelled at His words and were awed by His Person. His enemies who sought to correct Him found themselves corrected. We may not understand His way with us\, but we must understand He makes no mistakes.\nI reach His throne through the merit of His Son\, Jesus: I may talk with Him\, but in no way can I correct Him.
