SUMMARY:"Your eyes ... will see the land that is very far off" [Isaiah 33:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Your eyes … will see the land that is very far off”. This prophecy was given by Isaiah to the besieged inhabitants of Jerusalem where king Hezekiah and his suffering people longed for deliverance. It speaks prophetically to everyone who loves Jesus\, of the land of heaven and God’s eternal kingdom.\nWhen surrounded by the anxieties of this life in its day to day struggle\, heaven may indeed seem far off. Sometimes the valley through which we travel is so dark and deep we wonder whether heaven exists at all or if we shall reach it.\nYet the very pathway that takes us to that land is strewn with blessing and refreshment to help the faithful on their way. And “very far off” might be quite misleading. Jesus used the words “in a little while” for heaven is only a heart-beat away.

SUMMARY:"Repent\, and believe in the gospel" [Mark 1:15(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Repent\, and believe in the gospel”. Have we emphasised the need to have faith and believe in Christ at the expense of neglecting the first step of repentance? Jesus tells us to repent and believe.\nBelieving without repenting may bring short-term blessing but it can make for disillusionment. All who would be saved need to turn away from their sinful way and look to the Lord. No-one can adequately believe until they look to Christ and you cannot look until you turn around.\nOnly faith built on repentance can produce a changed life and a new creation that will withstand the onslaught of the devil.\nRepentance is preparing for a thorough renovation brought about by believing in Jesus\, calling upon the Lord and having the assurance of salvation.

SUMMARY:"I come to you in the name of the Lord" [I Samuel 17:45(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I come to you in the name of the Lord”. David with his stones and sling must have looked very vulnerable against the armour-clad giant\, Goliath. Five smooth stones seemed little match for a coat of mail weighing 5\,000 shekels of bronze. Yet\, as in all of life’s conflicts\, appearances can be deceptive. The exchange of words between these two give us a better evaluation.\nGoliath boasted of his great stature and the strength he had in his armour. He had big faith in human frailty. Most telling\, he defied the armies of the living God.\nDavid had practically nothing other than past experience of God’s deliverance and present trust in Him now.\nReflect and see where your trust is as you go forth to fight the battles of this day. You should have no doubt where real success is found.

SUMMARY:"They that sow in tears shall reap in joy" [Psalm 126:5]
DESCRIPTION:“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy”. It should be pointed out at once that this is not a promise for all who weep. It is for those who sow seeds of righteousness and water them with their tears. Seeing the need\, they pray about it and do what they can to meet it. The burden of that need makes them bathe their prayer in tears – it may be the tears of a mother heartbroken at the wayward-ness of her son\, of a disciple who longs for his friend to find Christ or of one grieving for his sin. Strong crying with tears is needed to break the strong grip of the Evil One upon a life or situation.\nSowing in tears indicates an earnestness that prayer will be answered and that God will intervene: they are the tears that precede victory\, they make a request that the Lord cannot refuse. The answer may not appear at once\, but in harvest they shall reap with joy.

SUMMARY:"Lord\, remember me" [Luke 23:42]
DESCRIPTION:“Lord\, remember me”. What was there to remember about him? His life as a robber? It was not his transformed life since conversion – he had none. He could not move a muscle – he was pinned to the cross\, yet he had as great a conversion as anyone.\nThat any idea of Christ’s kingdom was far removed from the awful scene of crucifixion did not seem to trouble him.\nJesus was going to claim His kingdom and he had the honour of dying beside Him – suffering on a cross.\nHe didn’t need theology\, a class for beginners\, and extension of life: these were impossible now. He did have a heart and he gave it to Jesus and received an assurance as blessed as any. You have a heart too\, no matter what else you may not have or know. Give it to Jesus.

SUMMARY:"you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck" [Daniel 5:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around your neck”. Daniel was also promised a position as third ruler in the kingdom. But these were of no interest to Daniel.\nBelshazzar had the sentence of death hanging upon him: his kingdom that he promised to share with Daniel would be wrenched from him before the night was out.\nAs Jesus said many years later\, it is gaining the whole world at the cost of losing your own soul.\nAs you look out into the world today there may be many attractive offers – realise they are worthless if they draw you away from the truth of the gospel. Indeed\, they are harmful when they prevent you from entering the kingdom of heaven.\nBe like Daniel and tell the world to keep its enticements.

SUMMARY:"God charges no one with wrongdoing" [Job 24:12(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“God charges no one with wrongdoing”. That was Job’s opinion when trying to reason his way out of the distress that beset him. Job was commenting on the way that God had not yet preferred a charge for wrong-doing in the lives of those who seemed to go through life godlessly and free from restraint.\nIt is a mistake to think God is not there because He does not immediately execute punishment on evil-doers. And it is equally erroneous to conclude that God is not interested in our small requests because He does not act or answer in the way we expect.\nThe Judgment Day is coming when all who have gone their own way in life without Him will be called to account. The charges then will be many. Faith and trust now will avoid judgment then.

SUMMARY:"all Israel shouted with a great shout" [I Samuel 4:5]
DESCRIPTION:“all Israel shouted with a great shout”. It isn’t the amount of noise we make that counts\, but what we are doing that is important. The Israelites had been smitten in battle by the Philistines. So they fetched the ark of the covenant from Shiloh where it should be kept and brought it into the camp. It was then they shouted\, thinking the Lord had come among them. They were mistaken.\nTheir shout only spurred on the Philistines to greater determination and thirty thousand footmen were slain in the battle that ensued. So rather than a shout\, it is obedience to the Lord and quiet confidence in Him that is needed. The shout of triumph in which the people of the Lord engage is not to be confused with misguided actions of disobedience.

SUMMARY:"He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly" [II Corinthians 9:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly”. It comes down to the adage we all know yet patently fail to practice\, namely that what we do today decides what we will have tomorrow.\nWe try to believe that we can start afresh tomorrow. But when tomorrow comes we find we are building upon today whether we want to do so or not.\nSo a good harvest tomorrow calls for generous sowing today. This applies to all areas of our life.\nThe Apostle Paul was thinking especially of the calling to discipleship that the believer has. Your life and mine have more in them than work\, recreation and sleep. Our life should be locked into that purpose for which God made us who we are. And we should be busy doing the job given us.

SUMMARY:"Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? " [Job 40:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Shall the one who contends with the Almighty correct him? “. Some attempt to bring the Sovereign Lord down to our level\, both in our address and our attitude. It is a familiarity that can breed contention if not contempt.\nThe mistake can arise from the fact that Jesus mingled and ate and drank with the common people of His day. But while He was one with them He was never one of them. He was separate from sinners. Rather than treat Him as a mere man\, both disciples and multitude marvelled at His words and were awed by His Person. His enemies who sought to correct Him found themselves corrected. We may not understand His way with us\, but we must understand He makes no mistakes.\nI reach His throne through the merit of His Son\, Jesus: I may talk with Him\, but in no way can I correct Him.

SUMMARY:"the Lamb shall overcome" [Revelation 17:14]
DESCRIPTION:“the Lamb shall overcome”. John Baptist pointed to Jesus and cried ‘Behold the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world’. The Jews found it difficult to accept Isaiah’s prophecy of a Suffering Messiah – they desired a triumphant king. At the conclusion of about three year’s ministry Jesus was led as a Lamb to be crucified. Pilate was puzzled that He and His followers offered no resistance. But what men mistook for weakness was tremendous strength. Upon Him was laid the sin of the world\, and His great atoning sacrifice has been immortalised in heaven by His appearing as a ‘newly slain Lamb’.\nBut the final triumph of the Lamb is yet to come. The Devil is active\, seeking to sabotage the blessing of Calvary. But in the final conflict the Devil and his angels will be destroyed: the Lamb shall overcome.

SUMMARY:"he that is not against us is for us" [Luke 9:50]
DESCRIPTION:“he that is not against us is for us”. The disciples came across someone casting out demons in the name of Jesus and they invited him to join them. He declined for a reason we are not told\, and the disciples told him to cease. Jesus upbraided them for this.\nThe disciples then and numerous times since have had to realise there are others doing the work of the Lord.\nAs Jesus intimated\, folk are either for Him or against. Put another way\, if you are not for Him\, you are against Him. There is no middle road of disinterest. The challenge of the gospel calls men and women to call upon the Lord and be saved.\nWhen you meet others who called and are saved\, don’t forbid them because they don’t belong to your group!

SUMMARY:"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" [Proverbs 9:10]
DESCRIPTION:“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom”. If you would be wise\, take God into your deliberations. Respect and obey His Word. Seek His approval and blessing on every decision and all that you do.\nHow often we spend more time seeking counsel from others or making our own arrangements\, rather than consulting the Lord. He will guide on every matter and lead into every right way.\nIt may only be the beginning of wisdom but there is no path that He orders but it leads to eternal life and glory.\nNo good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. This fear is obedience\, respect and reverence of the Lord and is expressed in love\, devotion and service.

SUMMARY:"I have commanded the ravens to feed you there" [I Kings 17:4(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I have commanded the ravens to feed you there”. Elijah knew the brook would provide him water but he must have wondered where food was coming from. This is something that happens in the Christian pathway where we often find ourselves wondering where many things will come from. When God calls and you obey\, you soon realise there are many things you will need. Whatever they are\, God will provide.\nThe Israelites in the wilderness had manna every morning and quail meat every night. If Elijah expected the same\, he found it was ravens providing him bread and meat.\nIt is important to realise it is God who provides however that provision is made. And the same God will provide for you as He has done for His servants all down the years.

SUMMARY:"I will smite the shepherd\, and the sheep shall be scattered" [Mark 14:27]
DESCRIPTION:“I will smite the shepherd\, and the sheep shall be scattered”. Jesus knew that His disciples would be distressed and dismayed at what was about to happen. They would be scattered and melt away. He would be smitten but that would be the beginning of a coming together again that results two thousand years later in a world-wide church of true disciples united by the suffering\, death and resurrection of Jesus.\nThere is a scattering to gather and a breaking down to build up. Because we cannot see what the future holds\, it calls for faith in God as we walk through the valley of sorrow\, that He will bring us up\, better and triumphant. The Lord does not promise to explain everything\, but He promises not to forsake us and His love and care is there whatever happens to us.

SUMMARY:"I am sought of them that asked not for me" [Isaiah 65:1]
DESCRIPTION:“I am sought of them that asked not for me”. A most comforting prediction and a door by which many have entered into Christ and been saved.\nAs a result of the Spirit led and directed activity of the disciples of Jesus\, many who had no thought or desire for God have been awakened to the glorious truth of the gospel. Many have as a result begun to seek the Lord. And the Lord Who graciously made known His love to those who asked not for Him\, is known never to turn away a seeking soul. Perhaps you fall into this category.\nThis verse also points to the day when the nation of Israel\, now in no way asking for Jesus as Messiah\, will turn about and seek Him.\nWhen the restoration of both Jew and Gentile is complete it will indeed be glorious.

SUMMARY:"it becomes unfruitful" [Mark 4:19(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“it becomes unfruitful”. The danger is to think that ‘unfruitful’ can never be a description of me.\nHere are a few causes of unfruitfulness (you can add to the list) in the Christian life: \n – an unhealthy interest in unproductive things\, – an obsessive involvement in the things of the world\,\n – stunted spiritual growth – no proper food\, – unforgiven sin\,\n – failure to appreciate God’s call and your brother in need\, – ensnared by evil\,\n – lack of attention and watchfulness. \nKnowing the dangers should prevent becoming trapped. Jesus ordains His followers to go and bring forth fruit. Care now will ensure a good harvest later.

SUMMARY:"howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing" [Nehemiah 13:2]
DESCRIPTION:“howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing”. This referred to the curse Balaam was asked to pronounce on the Children of Israel. Mankind has been labouring beneath a curse ever since the Fall in Eden.\nAn appreciation that it is the curse of sin makes for gratitude in accepting the blessing God has provided. The Devil has done his best to drive home the initial success he achieved when he entered into the lives of Adam and Eve. He has employed his agents as Balak tried to engage Balaam. But the Lord is ever turning a curse into a blessing for those who will submit to Him.\nDismay at the failure of man to live peaceably with his neighbour can be dispelled when the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts. It is the spread of the Gospel that turns the curse into a blessing.

SUMMARY:"Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help" [Psalm 146:5(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help”. Jacob was a devious character – a likeable rogue\, until you felt the sharp end of his bargains as Esau did. He even laid down a list of conditions for God to fill\, in return for which he would make Jehovah his God.\nOn one occasion he struggled and wrestled with an angel. However\, an examination of his life is likely to reveal that God wrestled with him for most of his years. The Lord got Jacob where He wanted him though not without him struggling. He took his place with honour among the Patriarchs. Now if yours and my God is the God of Jacob\, how blessed we are! The worst of us can find some kindred spirit in Jacob and if the Lord who helped him\, helps us\, we can be happy indeed.

SUMMARY:"make clean the outside" [Luke 11:39]
DESCRIPTION:“make clean the outside”. Clean outside is good for appearance\, but it is the state of things inside that makes for impression. When God wants to see what you are like He looks at the heart.\nIt was in order to cleanse the heart from sin that Jesus took our punishment and died on the cross.\nIt is the blood of God’s Son that cleanses from all sin. Once renewed inside\, the outside begins to reflect the change.\nEducate before you convert and you can get polished dirt. True reformation starts with a change within.\nIf the outside will change anyway\, let top priority be the inner cleansing for this day.

SUMMARY:"Great men are not always wise" [Job 32:9]
DESCRIPTION:“Great men are not always wise”. The greatest of men are not perfect and though behaving in an exemplary manner and giving wise advice\, there is likely to be a time when their example should not be followed nor their counsel heeded.\nUntil our attention is drawn to the God-man\, Christ Jesus and our gaze riveted upon Him there is always a danger that we come to ‘worship’ some of the greatest men who we know are not always wise.\nHe who is really great humbled Himself as He stooped down to man’s level – came alongside him as the Good Samaritan did to the man lying injured by robbers at the roadside. It is only when you receive His loving care in salvation and restoration that you realise He is different from all others – so great He can be trusted implicitly.

SUMMARY:"a servant girl" [Matthew 26:69(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“a servant girl”. She probably never aspired to anything much more than a servant taking orders from others.\nBut her words caused Peter to fall badly. She said “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth” as he sat outside in her yard. All eyes would be upon him and he denied that he knew Jesus. How he regretted that denial! How he must have appreciated the Lord’s subsequent forgiveness! She may have been but an insignificant servant girl but she played a significant part in Peter’s denial which Jesus had warned him about.\nShe reminds all who feel of no consequence that the smallest can play a part – one that is vital albeit small. Remember the servant girl in Naaman’s household who spoke up about her faith in the prophet Elisha. What a part she played!

SUMMARY:"God himself shall be with them" [Revelation 21:3]
DESCRIPTION:“God himself shall be with them”. The closing chapters of the Book of Revelation describe a scene that none in this life can really begin to appreciate. We can\, however\, sense the peace and tranquillity that prevails in these chapters after all the wrath and fury of what we read earlier. Not least among the constituents of this blissful state is this statement that God is with His People. Not just ‘somewhere around’\, or in the sense that God is everywhere\, but there – visibly with those who because of the clothing of immortality will be able to look upon Him and fully enter into the blessing of His Person.\nBut their experience is only faith turned to sight. For Jesus told His disciples He was with them always. If His Presence is not felt by faith now it will not be known at all then.

SUMMARY:"Behold\, therefore\, the goodness and severity of God" [Romans 11:22]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, therefore\, the goodness and severity of God”. It is a common error to think there can be true goodness without severity\, just as we may think severity disregards true goodness. The goodness of the Lord is felt by all His creatures – in the life He gives and sustains\, in the enjoyment of the world He has created and in the hope of eternal life He gives through His Son\, Jesus.\nThe severity of God can be felt by those who do not appreciate His goodness or do not respond to His loving hand: it will eventually be experienced by all who reject His salvation.\nThe goodness of the Lord leads a man to repentance. Respond to His goodness offering you forgiveness and you will not incur His severity in wrath against sin.

SUMMARY:"Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house" [Psalm 128:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house”. A help-meet was needed before the Fall and is still needed after it. Children can complete domestic bliss\, but some are called to forego children of their own. Others are called to care for the orphans and destitute.\nFruitfulness in the woman of the home may be expressed in love\, kindness\, thrift and plain helpfulness. As a woman makes a home she may serve the Lord as faithfully and usefully as the bread-winner who goes out daily into the world.\nStaying at home may not always be possible but it can be the highest honour.\nThe fruitfulness this psalm promises may originate in the home but it should extend far beyond it.

SUMMARY:"when I heard these words … I sat down and wept and mourned" [Nehemiah 1:4]
DESCRIPTION:“when I heard these words … I sat down and wept and mourned”. Sorrow is never far away from those whose concern is for their fellowmen. If we would seek to love our neighbour as ourself our heart will go out to those destitute and in distress.\nNehemiah heard that his beloved capital city lay waste. The many miles that separated him from his compatriots did not diminish his sorrow.\nModern communication brings the needs of the world to our immediate attention. Those who seek to follow Christ cannot dismiss these needs as of no concern to them.\nNehemiah’s tears and mourning paved the way for intercession and prayer followed by action according to his position. Those who never weep and mourn know little if anything of real prevailing prayer.

SUMMARY:"his heart went out to her" [Luke 7:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“his heart went out to her”. Whether this lady had encountered Jesus before this moment\, we do not know. What we do know is that she was in the process of burying her only son – and her husband had already died. What Christ saw was more than a funeral procession. He saw the deeper plight of the woman and His heart was moved. In his love and mercy He brought her son back to life and so provided for her future needs.\nChrist does not just provide comforting words or the proverbial arm round the shoulder. He knows the realities of life\, He has been there so He can meet us in our time of need. The ways and means of provision may vary\, but be sure that you will not be left alone or in despair as you look to Him for help.

SUMMARY:"Don't go back to your mother-in-law empty handed" [Ruth 3:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty handed”. It could be anyone who keeps the family together at home\, but in Ruth’s case it was her mother-in-law.\nAll who know the story are familiar with the way Ruth and her mother-in-law were attached to one another. All living in Bethlehem at the time knew too\, and Boaz recognised that this should not be taken for granted.\nNeither he nor anyone else could say that it does not matter about Naomi or that she is alright left at home. His “take her something” is the message for all who are tempted to take older members of the family for granted. Ruth’s blessing was going to be Naomi’s\, too. She was to nurse the child born to Ruth and Boaz\, but that was in the future. So the message is “Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty handed!”

SUMMARY:"it seemed right to all the people" [I Chronicles 13:4(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“it seemed right to all the people”. The whole assembly of Israel agreed that David their king should bring the ark back from Kiriath Jearim where it had been temporarily lodging.\nThe failure on this occasion was that neither David the king nor his advisors did properly seek out the divinely appointed way to effect the removal and convey that to the people. As a result the ark of the covenant\, the focal point of the worship of Jehovah\, was carried on a new cart and steadied by Uzzah who was struck down dead.\nThe incident brings home to us the need to seek after God’s way and be properly advised by those over us – this must surely apply to things in life both great and small.

SUMMARY:"whithersoever the king's commandment … came\, the Jews had joy and gladness\, a feast and a good day" [Esther 8:17]
DESCRIPTION:“whithersoever the king’s commandment … came\, the Jews had joy and gladness\, a feast and a good day”. The Jews had lived in dread of extermination as a result of the Haman inspired wicked decree. This is not unlike the fear of death that came upon all men as the result of Adam’s sin.\nBut the King’s commandment that forgiveness and restoration shall be offered to all who will repent and turn in faith to Christ has been carried to all parts of the earth by His servants.\nAnd when accepted\, it brings joy and gladness. Sin forgiven\, the removal of the curse\, deep peace\, purpose and satisfaction in living and above all\, the presence of the living Lord Jesus brings joy.\nPutting God out of mind must bring sorrow and remorse. Be among those who receive God’s Word and know His joy.
