SUMMARY:"Great men are not always wise" [Job 32:9]
DESCRIPTION:“Great men are not always wise”. The greatest of men are not perfect and though behaving in an exemplary manner and giving wise advice\, there is likely to be a time when their example should not be followed nor their counsel heeded.\nUntil our attention is drawn to the God-man\, Christ Jesus and our gaze riveted upon Him there is always a danger that we come to ‘worship’ some of the greatest men who we know are not always wise.\nHe who is really great humbled Himself as He stooped down to man’s level – came alongside him as the Good Samaritan did to the man lying injured by robbers at the roadside. It is only when you receive His loving care in salvation and restoration that you realise He is different from all others – so great He can be trusted implicitly.

SUMMARY:"a servant girl" [Matthew 26:69(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“a servant girl”. She probably never aspired to anything much more than a servant taking orders from others.\nBut her words caused Peter to fall badly. She said “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth” as he sat outside in her yard. All eyes would be upon him and he denied that he knew Jesus. How he regretted that denial! How he must have appreciated the Lord’s subsequent forgiveness! She may have been but an insignificant servant girl but she played a significant part in Peter’s denial which Jesus had warned him about.\nShe reminds all who feel of no consequence that the smallest can play a part – one that is vital albeit small. Remember the servant girl in Naaman’s household who spoke up about her faith in the prophet Elisha. What a part she played!

SUMMARY:"God himself shall be with them" [Revelation 21:3]
DESCRIPTION:“God himself shall be with them”. The closing chapters of the Book of Revelation describe a scene that none in this life can really begin to appreciate. We can\, however\, sense the peace and tranquillity that prevails in these chapters after all the wrath and fury of what we read earlier. Not least among the constituents of this blissful state is this statement that God is with His People. Not just ‘somewhere around’\, or in the sense that God is everywhere\, but there – visibly with those who because of the clothing of immortality will be able to look upon Him and fully enter into the blessing of His Person.\nBut their experience is only faith turned to sight. For Jesus told His disciples He was with them always. If His Presence is not felt by faith now it will not be known at all then.

SUMMARY:"Behold\, therefore\, the goodness and severity of God" [Romans 11:22]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, therefore\, the goodness and severity of God”. It is a common error to think there can be true goodness without severity\, just as we may think severity disregards true goodness. The goodness of the Lord is felt by all His creatures – in the life He gives and sustains\, in the enjoyment of the world He has created and in the hope of eternal life He gives through His Son\, Jesus.\nThe severity of God can be felt by those who do not appreciate His goodness or do not respond to His loving hand: it will eventually be experienced by all who reject His salvation.\nThe goodness of the Lord leads a man to repentance. Respond to His goodness offering you forgiveness and you will not incur His severity in wrath against sin.

SUMMARY:"Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house" [Psalm 128:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house”. A help-meet was needed before the Fall and is still needed after it. Children can complete domestic bliss\, but some are called to forego children of their own. Others are called to care for the orphans and destitute.\nFruitfulness in the woman of the home may be expressed in love\, kindness\, thrift and plain helpfulness. As a woman makes a home she may serve the Lord as faithfully and usefully as the bread-winner who goes out daily into the world.\nStaying at home may not always be possible but it can be the highest honour.\nThe fruitfulness this psalm promises may originate in the home but it should extend far beyond it.

SUMMARY:"when I heard these words … I sat down and wept and mourned" [Nehemiah 1:4]
DESCRIPTION:“when I heard these words … I sat down and wept and mourned”. Sorrow is never far away from those whose concern is for their fellowmen. If we would seek to love our neighbour as ourself our heart will go out to those destitute and in distress.\nNehemiah heard that his beloved capital city lay waste. The many miles that separated him from his compatriots did not diminish his sorrow.\nModern communication brings the needs of the world to our immediate attention. Those who seek to follow Christ cannot dismiss these needs as of no concern to them.\nNehemiah’s tears and mourning paved the way for intercession and prayer followed by action according to his position. Those who never weep and mourn know little if anything of real prevailing prayer.

SUMMARY:"his heart went out to her" [Luke 7:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“his heart went out to her”. Whether this lady had encountered Jesus before this moment\, we do not know. What we do know is that she was in the process of burying her only son – and her husband had already died. What Christ saw was more than a funeral procession. He saw the deeper plight of the woman and His heart was moved. In his love and mercy He brought her son back to life and so provided for her future needs.\nChrist does not just provide comforting words or the proverbial arm round the shoulder. He knows the realities of life\, He has been there so He can meet us in our time of need. The ways and means of provision may vary\, but be sure that you will not be left alone or in despair as you look to Him for help.

SUMMARY:"Don't go back to your mother-in-law empty handed" [Ruth 3:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty handed”. It could be anyone who keeps the family together at home\, but in Ruth’s case it was her mother-in-law.\nAll who know the story are familiar with the way Ruth and her mother-in-law were attached to one another. All living in Bethlehem at the time knew too\, and Boaz recognised that this should not be taken for granted.\nNeither he nor anyone else could say that it does not matter about Naomi or that she is alright left at home. His “take her something” is the message for all who are tempted to take older members of the family for granted. Ruth’s blessing was going to be Naomi’s\, too. She was to nurse the child born to Ruth and Boaz\, but that was in the future. So the message is “Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty handed!”

SUMMARY:"it seemed right to all the people" [I Chronicles 13:4(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“it seemed right to all the people”. The whole assembly of Israel agreed that David their king should bring the ark back from Kiriath Jearim where it had been temporarily lodging.\nThe failure on this occasion was that neither David the king nor his advisors did properly seek out the divinely appointed way to effect the removal and convey that to the people. As a result the ark of the covenant\, the focal point of the worship of Jehovah\, was carried on a new cart and steadied by Uzzah who was struck down dead.\nThe incident brings home to us the need to seek after God’s way and be properly advised by those over us – this must surely apply to things in life both great and small.

DESCRIPTION:“whithersoever the king’s commandment … came\, the Jews had joy and gladness\, a feast and a good day”. The Jews had lived in dread of extermination as a result of the Haman inspired wicked decree. This is not unlike the fear of death that came upon all men as the result of Adam’s sin.\nBut the King’s commandment that forgiveness and restoration shall be offered to all who will repent and turn in faith to Christ has been carried to all parts of the earth by His servants.\nAnd when accepted\, it brings joy and gladness. Sin forgiven\, the removal of the curse\, deep peace\, purpose and satisfaction in living and above all\, the presence of the living Lord Jesus brings joy.\nPutting God out of mind must bring sorrow and remorse. Be among those who receive God’s Word and know His joy.

SUMMARY:"as we have opportunity" [Galatians 6:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“as we have opportunity”. Opportunities come and go. Some are taken\, others are lost\, but here Paul speaks of an ongoing opportunity. There is no doubt in his mind that we will have this opportunity. It’s not ‘if’ but ‘as’. This opportunity can be long or short\, it can be passing or regular. It’s not dependent on another’s actions or outside events. This is an opportunity available to all and is for each one of us to accept. Each and every dealing we have with others\, at work or at home becomes a potential opportunity to ‘do good’. Irrespective of what they might do or how they might react\, we are able to ‘do good’ to them. Don’t miss the opportunities you have today to show God’s goodness to others.

SUMMARY:"now therefore" [Joshua 1:2]
DESCRIPTION:“now therefore”. Recognition of God’s blessing in the past enables a man or woman to face the future with confidence and to step forward in His Name.\nOur ‘now’ must be governed by a ‘therefore’ that takes account of what God has done in the past. Joshua taking over what Moses was doing can better be described as God continuing in Joshua what He began in Moses and expanding it.\nGod will use your life past to enrich your experience of Him now. He has not suddenly stumbled across you. His attention and care dates from your mother’s womb. It will make all the difference in your arising and going over into your Promised Land if you are aware of what God has done for you in past days.

SUMMARY:"Lord\, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? " [Luke 10:40 (RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Lord\, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? “. Jesus might have been pre-occupied with more important matters\, but it’s very unlikely this was the reason. Certainly He may have been wondering what the next step was for Him to take in His ministry. He could have been contemplating the shadow of the Cross which was daily looming greater.\nIt could be that He was just resting with His eyes closed and had not noticed Mary there\, but nothing like this was the case. He was delighted that Mary had joined those who sat at His feet drinking in every word and He wished Martha was there too.\nSome things might have to be left occasionally if you are to sit at Jesus’ feet.

SUMMARY:"praying always for you" [Colossians 1:3]
DESCRIPTION:“praying always for you”. You would expect to hear that the church at Colosse were praying for Paul. But in his letter we see that from his prison in Rome\, Paul was praying for them.\nPrayer is more than a money-in-the-slot exercise\, as though you ask the Lord to do something and then take the answer. The body of believers in Christ that make up the true church needs to be praying continually one for another.\nAs your spirit intercedes before God you present those persons and their needs as you know them.\nYou depend on other’s prayer and they depend on yours. The Lord wants us to be constantly in touch with Him and with others as we are led to pray for them.

SUMMARY:"And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you" [Deuteronomy 28:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you”. So many things in life seem to be coming our way yet turn off at the last minute or disappear altogether. Not so with the blessing of the Lord upon those who love Him. Take time to read the blessings promised in this chapter.\nOur hope must be in the Lord. As the eye of the servant looks to his master\, so we must look to the Lord. No good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly.\nAs we try to see ahead\, clouds that are gathering can make us despondent. But as we look to the Lord we see One who keeps His Word\, whose desire is towards His children and who promises that blessing will catch up with them and overtake them. Watch out for God’s promises catching up with you and overtaking you today\, and praise His Mighty Name.

SUMMARY:"Stop bringing meaningless offerings" [Isaiah 1:13 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Stop bringing meaningless offerings”. It is not what you have in your hand but what is in your heart that counts when you come before the Lord: not what you have done\, but what you are! We can do nothing to earn or merit our salvation. Why then do we bring worthless trinkets to the Lord when it is a humble and contrite heart that is required?\nThe only boasting we can have is in our Great High Priest who offered Himself to God. And He is the one who clothes us with the garments of salvation.\nIt is the empty outstretched hand that receives the gift of eternal life. Offer yourself a living sacrifice to God and let Him take and use you as He will – in this day and in His way to accomplish His plan to His glory. All we have is given by Him\, so the meaningful thing we can do is to offer ourselves.

SUMMARY:"guard what has been entrusted to your care" [I Timothy 6:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“guard what has been entrusted to your care”. Put up a guard before there is a break-in. A realisation of how valuable our calling in Christ is and how much our adversary the devil would steal it from us\, should be the stimulus we need to put us on our guard.\nAny number of what seem to be innocent pursuits may become hindrances to the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Christian.\nPaul seemed to be most concerned that Timothy should take care. The more the Lord has entrusted to you the more diligent you need to be in preserving it.\nThe only effective guard is walking close to the Lord in the everyday things of life. Then you will find peace and know all is well and that a guard against loss is in place.

SUMMARY:"your life is hid with Christ in God" [Colossians 3:3]
DESCRIPTION:“your life is hid with Christ in God”. God’s gift of eternal life has been brought to man by Jesus. All who believe in Jesus may receive this new life by faith.\nBut it is hidden. That is why doubts can arise or our faith can sometimes falter. Yet when you consider the way the Evil One wrenched God’s first gift of life from man\, and that same Devil is very active today\, you should be glad your new life is safely out of his reach.\nWhere better to be hid than ‘with Christ in God’! There could be no safer place. You may experience all kinds of problems and difficulties in your life on earth\, but you can rest contented if your real life is in Christ.\nThis is far more than religion as a label or a way of life on earth.

SUMMARY:"Wisdom is better than strength" [Ecclesiastes 9:16]
DESCRIPTION:“Wisdom is better than strength”. Force may get things done but they may be the wrong things. Strength is blind without wisdom. If made to choose between the two\, the Bible puts wisdom first.\nThe second part of this verse reminds us of a common injustice we need to fight against\, namely\, the poor man’s wisdom that is despised and his words not heard.\nWe must take care not to despise the wisdom of the poor. Because a man is shabbily dressed or considered poor does not mean his words should be discounted.\nWisdom does not demand that its owner has a healthy bank balance\, though we mistakenly might think so. Neither must a person be dressed in regal robes for his or her counsel to be as good as that of a monarch.

SUMMARY:"holiness\, without which no man shall see the Lord" [Hebrews 12:14]
DESCRIPTION:“holiness\, without which no man shall see the Lord”. We have two things here – holiness and seeing the Lord.\nHoliness is a state of purity\, being set apart for God’s glory. For man as he tries to draw near to God it is a progressive state. To be like Jesus is the path along which we advance.\nRefusing to acknowledge sin\, or to say sin does not exist\, does not make me holy. Only absolution and forgiveness can do that and then it must be through the blood of Jesus.\nSeeing the Lord can just mean recognising He is the Lord God Almighty. As the life of holiness proceeds the follower sees more and more of Jesus.\nThe important thing is that you cannot see the Lord until you are made holy and you can only begin to be holy when sin is recognised\, renounced and forgiven.

SUMMARY:"it grieves me very much for your sakes" [Ruth 1:13(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“it grieves me very much for your sakes”. Naomi’s experience is something that many have known. She felt that it was her behaviour that had brought sorrow into the lives of her daughters-in-law.\nIt was a sorrow that she could do little about. Fleeing to Moab with her husband who then died\, followed by her sons’ deaths after they had married Orpah and Ruth\, brought grief.\nBut there was comfort then as there is comfort today for any like her because God does not desert those in such need.\nNaomi’s grief was real\, but so was her joy. She wanted to change her name to Mara\, meaning “bitter”\, but God had great blessing for her. It is the same for all who will recognise their life is in His hand.

SUMMARY:"Abishai said\, 'I will go down with you' " [I Samuel 26:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Abishai said\, ‘I will go down with you’ “. Abishai stands out in this incident as a ready and willing volunteer to accompany David on a hazardous mission. Saul and his men\, who were hunting David\, lay sleeping in their camp in the wilderness. David asked who would go with him into this camp and Abishai immediately said he would go. He did not say that he knew another good man who could do the job; he said that he would go.\nWhen they reached Saul\, Abishai wanted David to take revenge and kill him. He had to learn that David would not destroy the Lord’s anointed as he slept. Like Abishai we need to be ready to respond positively to the Lord’s invitation as we go into this day and then to learn what is His will for us to do in every situation we find ourselves.

SUMMARY:"ambassadors for Christ" [II Corinthians 5:20]
DESCRIPTION:“ambassadors for Christ”. Diplomatic relations between God and man were not broken off when Jesus ascended to His Father!\nAll who acknowledged Jesus as Lord were to become ambassadors: those who let the gospel light shine through them are ambassadors.\nJesus’ ministry on earth is still the most talked about three years in this world’s history. This talking is largely done by His disciples who are His ambassadors. The church of Jesus Christ has grown apace as its emancipating message has been conveyed by these ambassadors all over the world. No one need say ‘What can I do?’ Tell the one next to you about Jesus and in an instant you’ll know what it is to be an ambassador of the Sovereign Lord.

SUMMARY:"Why do you not understand what I say? " [John 8:43(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Why do you not understand what I say? “. The Lord might well put this question to many today.\nJesus ministered for three years using words that the simplest soul could understand. His message was backed by miracles and a life of loving and helping His fellowmen. The words He spoke have never been allowed to be lost in all the rubbish that has been published over the centuries. After one atoning death for the sin of the world\, He was declared to be the Son of God with power by His resurrection from the dead. By the Holy Spirit He speaks as a living Saviour to all who will listen.\nWhy do so many not understand? Most likely because they don’t want to. Put simply\, they will not come to Him and receive Life. Don’t be like them!

SUMMARY:"Have you entered the treasury of snow\, or have you seen the treasury of hail …? " [Job 38:22(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Have you entered the treasury of snow\, or have you seen the treasury of hail …? The snowflake tells the glory of the Creator. The wonder in the design of every snowflake and in every hailstone points to the wonder of creation. Today’s question is\, ‘Have you considered this?’ Or are you just wandering through life with no eye for the beauty around you?\nJust as God’s Word takes on a new look when you know the Author\, so should God’s world when you know the Creator.\nThe odd snowflake is lost: a fall of them can paralyse a city. Every flake bares the stamp of its Creator. Mother earth clad in her winter coat reminds us of the whiteness of the heart when cleansed from sin. Don’t bury your head in the newspaper of this world’s worries: look out of life’s carriage window as you journey through the day.

SUMMARY:"Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word" [Psalm 119:67]
DESCRIPTION:“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word”. The Psalmist thanked God for the affliction he had experienced. When everything is going right\, one often finds that if there is faith at all it is filed away in a drawer only to be brought out if needed.\nBut then affliction comes\, the bottom drops out of your world\, you cannot do as you want any more. And while you cry ‘Why has God done this to me’\, you know the affliction has drawn you to the Lord. And it takes a lot of affliction to knock the spiritual pride out of some of us. When you find that the way of the transgressor is hard\, you take steps to keep to the straight and narrow way.\nYou can thank God for the affliction when it brings you in line with God’s Word in your life.

SUMMARY:"What do you want me to do for you? " [Mark 10:51(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“What do you want me to do for you? “. This is the question Jesus asked a blind beggar. It is a valid question for you and me today. What do we want the Lord to do for us?\nThe Christian is called to be the “salt of the earth” and much prayer he makes will be of a general nature – for the sick and lonely\, for safety in travel\, for peace and stability in the nation\, and so on. But this man was asked a personal question.\nWhat Jesus wants to do for you will not only give you peace and joy\, it will enable you to fill the place God has for you. There will be no mistaking what the Lord does. Jesus healed the blind beggar but the story didn’t stop there. Bartimaeus followed Jesus – that was fulfilling the purpose of his healing. He will do the same for you.

SUMMARY:"Keep yourself pure" [I Timothy 5:22(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Keep yourself pure”. Because the soul cleansed by the blood of Jesus can become soiled or contaminated through the environment\, Paul reminded Timothy of his responsibility to keep himself pure.\nThe Christian cannot do as he likes. Because a thing is pleasurable and desirable does not make it permissible. Pure godly religion is to keep oneself unspotted from the world. To be constantly sinning and asking forgiveness is not acceptable. It is incompatible with growth. Sadly\, the world and the church often accept a lower standard.\nSin has not lost its stain and abhorrence in God’s sight because we have changed its name or ignored it altogether.\nIt’s up to us. If we would advance in the Christian pathway without falling back the rule must be “Keep yourself pure!”

SUMMARY:"not turning aside to the right or to the left" [II Chronicles 34:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“not turning aside to the right or to the left”. Josiah did what was right in God’s eyes – he did not deviate to the right or left. In striving not to veer off to the left we can deviate to the right and trying not to veer right we can stray to the left. But you could examine Josiah’s left and right boundary and find them intact. As long as we keep close to the Lord we shall not get “out on a limb”. But we need to realise we can go too far ahead as well as lag behind.\nIf temptation comes from a certain direction it may equally well come from the opposite direction. Strong on one point can result in weakness in another. You can be too wide (liberal) or too narrow (exclusive). Knowing the right and doing it\, means turning away neither to the right nor left.

SUMMARY:"Put this money to work" [Luke 19:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Put this money to work”. This was the instruction given to the servants by the nobleman who gave each of them a pound or mina. Jesus likened the situation in this parable to the kingdom of heaven. The mina speaks of something given to trade with.\nAll in the kingdom have been given something. So the question is\, “Are you putting to work what the Lord has given you?” Is this an accurate description of what you are doing today? Each servant had a responsibility while the nobleman was away. And each member of the true church has a responsibility.\nJesus will return again and then there will be a day of reckoning. There will be those who do not put to work what they have been given. Head\, hands\, feet and heart can all be employed in the responsibility of discipleship.
