SUMMARY:"it grieves me very much for your sakes" [Ruth 1:13(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“it grieves me very much for your sakes”. Naomi’s experience is something that many have known. She felt that it was her behaviour that had brought sorrow into the lives of her daughters-in-law.\nIt was a sorrow that she could do little about. Fleeing to Moab with her husband who then died\, followed by her sons’ deaths after they had married Orpah and Ruth\, brought grief.\nBut there was comfort then as there is comfort today for any like her because God does not desert those in such need.\nNaomi’s grief was real\, but so was her joy. She wanted to change her name to Mara\, meaning “bitter”\, but God had great blessing for her. It is the same for all who will recognise their life is in His hand.

SUMMARY:"Abishai said\, 'I will go down with you' " [I Samuel 26:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Abishai said\, ‘I will go down with you’ “. Abishai stands out in this incident as a ready and willing volunteer to accompany David on a hazardous mission. Saul and his men\, who were hunting David\, lay sleeping in their camp in the wilderness. David asked who would go with him into this camp and Abishai immediately said he would go. He did not say that he knew another good man who could do the job; he said that he would go.\nWhen they reached Saul\, Abishai wanted David to take revenge and kill him. He had to learn that David would not destroy the Lord’s anointed as he slept. Like Abishai we need to be ready to respond positively to the Lord’s invitation as we go into this day and then to learn what is His will for us to do in every situation we find ourselves.

SUMMARY:"ambassadors for Christ" [II Corinthians 5:20]
DESCRIPTION:“ambassadors for Christ”. Diplomatic relations between God and man were not broken off when Jesus ascended to His Father!\nAll who acknowledged Jesus as Lord were to become ambassadors: those who let the gospel light shine through them are ambassadors.\nJesus’ ministry on earth is still the most talked about three years in this world’s history. This talking is largely done by His disciples who are His ambassadors. The church of Jesus Christ has grown apace as its emancipating message has been conveyed by these ambassadors all over the world. No one need say ‘What can I do?’ Tell the one next to you about Jesus and in an instant you’ll know what it is to be an ambassador of the Sovereign Lord.

SUMMARY:"Why do you not understand what I say? " [John 8:43(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“Why do you not understand what I say? “. The Lord might well put this question to many today.\nJesus ministered for three years using words that the simplest soul could understand. His message was backed by miracles and a life of loving and helping His fellowmen. The words He spoke have never been allowed to be lost in all the rubbish that has been published over the centuries. After one atoning death for the sin of the world\, He was declared to be the Son of God with power by His resurrection from the dead. By the Holy Spirit He speaks as a living Saviour to all who will listen.\nWhy do so many not understand? Most likely because they don’t want to. Put simply\, they will not come to Him and receive Life. Don’t be like them!

SUMMARY:"Have you entered the treasury of snow\, or have you seen the treasury of hail …? " [Job 38:22(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Have you entered the treasury of snow\, or have you seen the treasury of hail …? The snowflake tells the glory of the Creator. The wonder in the design of every snowflake and in every hailstone points to the wonder of creation. Today’s question is\, ‘Have you considered this?’ Or are you just wandering through life with no eye for the beauty around you?\nJust as God’s Word takes on a new look when you know the Author\, so should God’s world when you know the Creator.\nThe odd snowflake is lost: a fall of them can paralyse a city. Every flake bares the stamp of its Creator. Mother earth clad in her winter coat reminds us of the whiteness of the heart when cleansed from sin. Don’t bury your head in the newspaper of this world’s worries: look out of life’s carriage window as you journey through the day.

SUMMARY:"Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word" [Psalm 119:67]
DESCRIPTION:“Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word”. The Psalmist thanked God for the affliction he had experienced. When everything is going right\, one often finds that if there is faith at all it is filed away in a drawer only to be brought out if needed.\nBut then affliction comes\, the bottom drops out of your world\, you cannot do as you want any more. And while you cry ‘Why has God done this to me’\, you know the affliction has drawn you to the Lord. And it takes a lot of affliction to knock the spiritual pride out of some of us. When you find that the way of the transgressor is hard\, you take steps to keep to the straight and narrow way.\nYou can thank God for the affliction when it brings you in line with God’s Word in your life.

SUMMARY:"What do you want me to do for you? " [Mark 10:51(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“What do you want me to do for you? “. This is the question Jesus asked a blind beggar. It is a valid question for you and me today. What do we want the Lord to do for us?\nThe Christian is called to be the “salt of the earth” and much prayer he makes will be of a general nature – for the sick and lonely\, for safety in travel\, for peace and stability in the nation\, and so on. But this man was asked a personal question.\nWhat Jesus wants to do for you will not only give you peace and joy\, it will enable you to fill the place God has for you. There will be no mistaking what the Lord does. Jesus healed the blind beggar but the story didn’t stop there. Bartimaeus followed Jesus – that was fulfilling the purpose of his healing. He will do the same for you.

SUMMARY:"Keep yourself pure" [I Timothy 5:22(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Keep yourself pure”. Because the soul cleansed by the blood of Jesus can become soiled or contaminated through the environment\, Paul reminded Timothy of his responsibility to keep himself pure.\nThe Christian cannot do as he likes. Because a thing is pleasurable and desirable does not make it permissible. Pure godly religion is to keep oneself unspotted from the world. To be constantly sinning and asking forgiveness is not acceptable. It is incompatible with growth. Sadly\, the world and the church often accept a lower standard.\nSin has not lost its stain and abhorrence in God’s sight because we have changed its name or ignored it altogether.\nIt’s up to us. If we would advance in the Christian pathway without falling back the rule must be “Keep yourself pure!”

SUMMARY:"not turning aside to the right or to the left" [II Chronicles 34:2(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“not turning aside to the right or to the left”. Josiah did what was right in God’s eyes – he did not deviate to the right or left. In striving not to veer off to the left we can deviate to the right and trying not to veer right we can stray to the left. But you could examine Josiah’s left and right boundary and find them intact. As long as we keep close to the Lord we shall not get “out on a limb”. But we need to realise we can go too far ahead as well as lag behind.\nIf temptation comes from a certain direction it may equally well come from the opposite direction. Strong on one point can result in weakness in another. You can be too wide (liberal) or too narrow (exclusive). Knowing the right and doing it\, means turning away neither to the right nor left.

SUMMARY:"Put this money to work" [Luke 19:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Put this money to work”. This was the instruction given to the servants by the nobleman who gave each of them a pound or mina. Jesus likened the situation in this parable to the kingdom of heaven. The mina speaks of something given to trade with.\nAll in the kingdom have been given something. So the question is\, “Are you putting to work what the Lord has given you?” Is this an accurate description of what you are doing today? Each servant had a responsibility while the nobleman was away. And each member of the true church has a responsibility.\nJesus will return again and then there will be a day of reckoning. There will be those who do not put to work what they have been given. Head\, hands\, feet and heart can all be employed in the responsibility of discipleship.

SUMMARY:"Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you" [Psalm 55:22(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you”. Jesus spoke of each day having enough trouble of its own. ‘Cares’ speak of everyday life. Each day has its own cares and concerns\, there’s no avoiding that. It’s what we do with them that matters. Carrying them\, being weighed down by them\, allowing them to choke the very life out of you is one option. The other is to hand them over. The Hebrew word for ‘cast’ emphasises the transfer from one place to another.\nDavid is encouraging us to hand our lives\, and the daily issues in them\, over to the Lord. When we do\, then we experience His sustaining power\, enabling us to come through each day in a way that honours Him and strengthens our relationship with Him.\n [AP]

SUMMARY:"the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God\, and from his power" [Revelation 15:8]
DESCRIPTION:“the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God\, and from his power”. This is vastly different from the Temple area on earth when Jesus visited it and found it a den of thieves and echoing with the rattle of money rather than prayer.\nIt is a picture of what every sanctuary should be. No use consecrating a building if the glory of the Lord will not be there.\nWhen Solomon’s temple was dedicated\, the glory of God so filled it that administration was brought to a standstill.\nIt is not how large the building is that is important\, but whether the glory of the Lord fills it.\nWe know that the body of the believer is the temple of the Holy Spirit. Every believer needs to ensure that His praise fills the Temple and that worship conducted in it is Spirit led.

SUMMARY:"when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth\, he began to cry out" [Mark 10:47]
DESCRIPTION:“when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth\, he began to cry out”. Three factors contributed to his startling behaviour. First\, he believed that Jesus could do something for him: second he was advised that Jesus was passing by and thirdly he knew that Jesus did not turn away anyone in need. This made him cry out and to continue shouting until Jesus heard and responded.\nWe might say that the man was aware of his need also\, but really that is too obvious. Sadly man in general is not aware of his need today. You would think that sin and judgment no longer existed.\nAs a result\, not many cry out for mercy. This blind man was the only one in the crowd that cried to Jesus. And he was the only one who received mercy. It is the same today.

SUMMARY:"she said\, The glory is departed from Israel" [I Samuel 4:22]
DESCRIPTION:“she said\,The glory is departed from Israel”. These last words of Phinehas’ wife as she died in childbirth were prophetic. God through her pronounced judgment upon Israel and Ichabod\, the name of her son\, bore witness to this.\nGods’ glory shines in the hearts of those who obey and fear Him. It leaves when sin and rebellion take over the lives of His followers.\nThe many promises God made to Israel were no longer valid when the Children of Israel disobeyed Him\, turned away and disowned Him: We may easily take for granted a glory that we have known of Him not realising that this is dependent upon His Presence with us. And that Presence is holiness without which no man can know the Lord.

SUMMARY:"Seek the Lord while he may be found\, Call upon him while he is near" [Isaiah 55:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Seek the Lord while he may be found\, Call upon him while he is near”. Now is the accepted time. A day may come when God cannot be found. Remember Esau who for a morsel sold his birthright and afterward when he would have inherited the blessing was rejected\, though he sought it with tears.\nThe verse also tells us we must seek and call. We seek by attending to our ways\, by our manner of life and by repenting of sin in our hearts: it means leaving no area undisturbed as we use every means to find Him.\nWe call when we believe He is there though we cannot see Him. We call to attract His attention and draw on His mercy.\nPaul told his hearers in Athens that God is not far from any one of us. In the affairs of this day God is near\, waiting for us to seek and call.

SUMMARY:"Except a man be born again\, he cannot see the kingdom of God" [John 3:3]
DESCRIPTION:“Except a man be born again\, he cannot see the kingdom of God”. Natural birth only carries a lease for duration of life on earth. No one born into this world has any entitlement to life beyond the grave. Only God has immortality. Man forfeited any hope of qualifying or earning any extension of life when Adam fell in the Garden of Eden.\nGod’s heavenly kingdom is real and many count themselves citizens of it. That citizenship is as a result of a new birth. It is so important that Jesus interrupted Nicodemus at the very outset of their conversation to enlighten him about it.\nThat new birth is not something man can generate of himself. It is a re-creation of the Holy Spirit. He cannot earn it but he can and must ask the Lord for a new birth\, a vision of His Kingdom and the gift of eternal life.[/sayit

SUMMARY:"Accept the one whose faith is weak" [Romans 14:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Accept the one whose faith is weak”. The weak brother needs supporting. It may be for this very reason that he crosses your path. Weak faith is infinitely greater than no faith and strengthening the weak may be just your ministry.\nAccept those weak in faith but don’t get embroiled in other’s doubting and disputings. Keep your eyes on the Lord. Let His blessing and the fruit of your faith in time past encourage you to believe – even for the strengthening of your brother’s weak faith.\nCircumstances\, tradition and upbringing play a great part in the development of faith and different temperaments react differently\, too. But strong faith develops in those who feed upon the meat of the Word of God.

SUMMARY:"the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha" [II Kings 4:1(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried to Elisha”. I have always been attracted to this widow’s behaviour. She was not too proud to ask for help when she needed it. Her situation was desperate and she quite rightly called for assistance from the circle of godly men in which her late husband moved. The Lord tells us that we should call upon Him in the day of trouble. It is true that the Lord knows all about us and is aware of our condition: also that He promises never to leave us\, though at times we may feel we have left Him. Yet we are told to call. What this widow would have missed if she had not called! She would never have seen her empty jars miraculously filled with such provision as enabled her to clear the debt and live. And I wonder what you are missing because you do not call unto the Lord!

SUMMARY:"there was a division among the people because of him" [John 7:43]
DESCRIPTION:“there was a division among the people because of him”. Some accept while others reject: Jesus said He would divide those of a household. He came and lived and died and rose again that those who believe might not perish but have eternal life. But there are those who will not believe. Jesus said to His hearers\, “You will not come to me that you might have life” and it is the same today.\nBut who would refrain from sending a rescue vessel into a besieged port because some might refuse to leave their doomed city? So it is that the gospel of God’s love and grace must be preached. It is because we were all perishing that Christ came to save us: now the gospel is preached and those who believe are saved from perishing.\nOn which side of the division shall we be found?

SUMMARY:"none might enter into the king's gate clothed with sackcloth" [Esther 4:2]
DESCRIPTION:“none might enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth”. Was this edict designed to keep grief and mourning away from the palace area? If so\, it failed.\nRather than banning sorrow\, we need to carefully tend it. Remember the gracious way that Elijah dealt with the woman whose grief was beyond words at the loss of her only son.\nWhile Ahasuerus may have used the king’s gate to lock out his distraught and sorrowing subjects\, the higher court of heaven knows no such exclusion. It could be said that the sackcloth of sorrow for sin must be worn before the blood-washed garments of righteousness can be donned.\nBecause you bear inexpressible sorrow you will never be excluded from the feet of Jesus. He will listen to you\, lift your burden and lighten your load. He mends the broken-hearted.

SUMMARY:"they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar" [II Chronicles 29:24]
DESCRIPTION:“they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar”. The old hymn goes\, “What can wash away my stain? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!” There is no reason to think the position has changed. Science and education have made clever sinners\, the comforts of our age\, contented sinners. Rebellion against God has produced wayward sinners. Pride abounds in conceited sinners.\nBut nothing has been found to make sinners saints except the blood upon that great altar – the cross of Calvary. Once in the end of the age Christ appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Only Jesus can reconcile the sinner to God.\nThe Old Testament sacrifices spoke of a Lamb of God that would be slain for sin. The New Testament makes it clear that it is by His blood alone we may be reconciled to God.

SUMMARY:"Who determined its measurements? " [Job 38:5(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Who determined its measurements? “. How can a person live in this world without questioning who made it?\nHow better could God put His stamp on all that meets our eyes and reaches our ears than in nature? We\, as every other part of nature\, are fearfully and wonderfully made.\nIt would be inconceivable\, were it not true\, that men live for seventy or more years following all kinds of pursuits\, engaging in all sorts of pleasures and seeking so much knowledge\, yet having no thought for God.\nNot content with that\, man seeks to find any reason that will excuse him from seeking. So he decides that all the measurements and all the laws and all the order happened by chance. It is counsel without knowledge\, but who did determine the measurements of our universe?

SUMMARY:"great is the Lord\, and greatly to be praised" [I Chronicles 16:25]
DESCRIPTION:“great is the Lord\, and greatly to be praised”. David’s words are an exhortation to us today. It is not enough to recognise that God is great: we are to praise Him.\nPraise is the highest form of exercise. The Lord is the only true object for that exercise.\nOf course\, it can be said that all who recognise His greatness cannot help but praise Him. His praise is their delight. He deserves the praise of His People and His People love to praise Him. Such glimpses as we have into heaven show us praise to be its chief\, if not sole\, engagement. A very imperfect illustration may be seen in the man who falls in love with a maid – so deeply in love that she is all he can think about and everything he does is for her or has her in mind. She is to be greatly praised by him. So it is with the lovers of Jesus.

SUMMARY:"I will make all my mountains a way" [Isaiah 49:11]
DESCRIPTION:“I will make all my mountains a way”. When you have this assurance no obstacle need cause you to fear any more. This promise also reminds us that the Lord has created the mountains that sometimes seem to hinder us.\nIt may be a steep climb\, the terrain may be difficult\, but the way of the Lord is a “King’s highway.”\nThose who traverse the mountains of life are overcomers. They know and experience the Lord their God with them. They see Him miraculously provide.\nIt is when it comes to finding the way through the mountains of difficulties that those whose trust is in the Lord can stand out from unbelievers. It is not by our skill or engineering we shall reach our heavenly home. The Lord makes the way for us to tread. It is a God-given path.

SUMMARY:"they answered and said unto Jesus\, We cannot tell" [Mark 11:33]
DESCRIPTION:“they answered and said unto Jesus\, We cannot tell”. The chief priest\, scribes and elders did not want to face up to Jesus’ question\, so they said they did not know the answer. They were afraid to say what they thought because it was so obviously flawed. They were not prepared to think through the truth of the matter for fear they might need to change their mind. There are many like them today.\nJesus said that men would not come to the light lest their deeds were reproved. John’s Gospel tells us that Jesus came to His own people but they did not receive Him. If men would consider their real needs and those of the community and of the world in the light of the gospel they would call upon the Lord for mercy and forgiveness. Faith says “Lord\, we believe”; it is the agnostic who says he cannot tell.

SUMMARY:"Take heed to yourselves" [Luke 17:3]
DESCRIPTION:“Take heed to yourselves”. Jesus is warning us not to drift through the day like dead fish go downstream. You can do something positive today and that will make a difference. Taking heed and forethought will make you ready to respond to the unexpected.\nWhen called upon to make a quick decision we need to be ready for refusing the wrong and choosing the right.\nOur world is well filled with those bent on doing evil and we need to have no part in it. When repeatedly sinned against by a brother who nonetheless repeatedly repents and asks for forgiveness\, we must be ready to give it.\nThe path you take through this day is not unlike a test track – often taxed to the limit and ever facing the unexpected. So watch yourself!

SUMMARY:"My Presence will go with you\, and I will give you rest" [Exodus 33:14(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“My Presence will go with you\, and I will give you rest”. This promise is for us today.\nIn the next verse Moses prays asking the Lord not to let them go forward if he does not go with them. We all have to move forward and Moses was saying he did not want to go forward without the Lord.\nSo often we do go ahead and many times we fail to listen or heed the signs in our path. One of my daughters-in-law told her children never to go out of her sight. It didn’t matter how far away they were so long as one could see the other. So it is with the Lord. We may feel alone in the midst of a wide world\, or called upon to make far reaching decisions\, but so long as we can see Him or know He is near we shall experience His peace in it all.

SUMMARY:"He has brought us to this place" [Deuteronomy 26:9(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He has brought us to this place”. After rehearsing God’s dealings with His People\, Moses is here showing them the manner in which they should come before the Lord with the offering of their firstfruits.\nIt was important that they should recognise that the Lord had brought them to the place where they now were. It is the same today. You are either where you are by the grace of God or in the wrong place!\nBut acknowledging that the Lord has brought you here causes thanksgiving to arise and praise for His greatness to you. It also encourages you to look with confidence to Him to keep your steps in the days that lie ahead.\nLooking to the future can be quite depressing: looking to the Lord will ever cause you to rejoice in His greatness.

SUMMARY:"perfect peace" [Isaiah 26:3]
DESCRIPTION:“perfect peace”. Uninterrupted\, undisturbed and unaffected by the bedlam that may be going on around; concerned but not conquered by events they behold; this describes perfect peace.\nThis verse gives the answer and the key – their mind is stayed on the Lord because their trust is in Him. As a result they are not afraid of the terror by night or the arrows of the evil one by day. They are sheltering under the wings of the Almighty – where safer could they be!\nWhen it is from the Lord that your strength is drawn\, you have a living stream that will not dry up.\nPerfect peace has a present and a future. If it could ever be lost at a future time it would not be perfect.\nDraw near to Jesus for it is the Lord who keeps His children in perfect peace. [AP]

SUMMARY:"about three in the afternoon he had a vision" [Acts 10:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“about three in the afternoon he had a vision”. These words relate to Cornelius. He was a Roman centurion with a devout and God-fearing family and one who gave generously to those in need and who prayed regularly. He was pointing the right way\, but needed something more.\nA vision of an angel started this for him and the matter concluded with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit after Peter visited his home and preached to them.\nFacing the right way and moving forward is good. Yet we need a heavenly vision and the leading of the Spirit of God to bring us to a place of repentance and commitment.\nIn the Old Testament we read that without a vision the people perish and this is true in the New Testament\, too.\nEach of us needs a vision of the pathway the Lord has for us and one so real that we cannot mistake it.
