SUMMARY:"they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar" [II Chronicles 29:24]
DESCRIPTION:“they made reconciliation with their blood upon the altar”. The old hymn goes\, “What can wash away my stain? Nothing but the blood of Jesus!” There is no reason to think the position has changed. Science and education have made clever sinners\, the comforts of our age\, contented sinners. Rebellion against God has produced wayward sinners. Pride abounds in conceited sinners.\nBut nothing has been found to make sinners saints except the blood upon that great altar – the cross of Calvary. Once in the end of the age Christ appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Only Jesus can reconcile the sinner to God.\nThe Old Testament sacrifices spoke of a Lamb of God that would be slain for sin. The New Testament makes it clear that it is by His blood alone we may be reconciled to God.

SUMMARY:"Who determined its measurements? " [Job 38:5(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Who determined its measurements? “. How can a person live in this world without questioning who made it?\nHow better could God put His stamp on all that meets our eyes and reaches our ears than in nature? We\, as every other part of nature\, are fearfully and wonderfully made.\nIt would be inconceivable\, were it not true\, that men live for seventy or more years following all kinds of pursuits\, engaging in all sorts of pleasures and seeking so much knowledge\, yet having no thought for God.\nNot content with that\, man seeks to find any reason that will excuse him from seeking. So he decides that all the measurements and all the laws and all the order happened by chance. It is counsel without knowledge\, but who did determine the measurements of our universe?

SUMMARY:"great is the Lord\, and greatly to be praised" [I Chronicles 16:25]
DESCRIPTION:“great is the Lord\, and greatly to be praised”. David’s words are an exhortation to us today. It is not enough to recognise that God is great: we are to praise Him.\nPraise is the highest form of exercise. The Lord is the only true object for that exercise.\nOf course\, it can be said that all who recognise His greatness cannot help but praise Him. His praise is their delight. He deserves the praise of His People and His People love to praise Him. Such glimpses as we have into heaven show us praise to be its chief\, if not sole\, engagement. A very imperfect illustration may be seen in the man who falls in love with a maid – so deeply in love that she is all he can think about and everything he does is for her or has her in mind. She is to be greatly praised by him. So it is with the lovers of Jesus.

SUMMARY:"I will make all my mountains a way" [Isaiah 49:11]
DESCRIPTION:“I will make all my mountains a way”. When you have this assurance no obstacle need cause you to fear any more. This promise also reminds us that the Lord has created the mountains that sometimes seem to hinder us.\nIt may be a steep climb\, the terrain may be difficult\, but the way of the Lord is a “King’s highway.”\nThose who traverse the mountains of life are overcomers. They know and experience the Lord their God with them. They see Him miraculously provide.\nIt is when it comes to finding the way through the mountains of difficulties that those whose trust is in the Lord can stand out from unbelievers. It is not by our skill or engineering we shall reach our heavenly home. The Lord makes the way for us to tread. It is a God-given path.

SUMMARY:"they answered and said unto Jesus\, We cannot tell" [Mark 11:33]
DESCRIPTION:“they answered and said unto Jesus\, We cannot tell”. The chief priest\, scribes and elders did not want to face up to Jesus’ question\, so they said they did not know the answer. They were afraid to say what they thought because it was so obviously flawed. They were not prepared to think through the truth of the matter for fear they might need to change their mind. There are many like them today.\nJesus said that men would not come to the light lest their deeds were reproved. John’s Gospel tells us that Jesus came to His own people but they did not receive Him. If men would consider their real needs and those of the community and of the world in the light of the gospel they would call upon the Lord for mercy and forgiveness. Faith says “Lord\, we believe”; it is the agnostic who says he cannot tell.

SUMMARY:"Take heed to yourselves" [Luke 17:3]
DESCRIPTION:“Take heed to yourselves”. Jesus is warning us not to drift through the day like dead fish go downstream. You can do something positive today and that will make a difference. Taking heed and forethought will make you ready to respond to the unexpected.\nWhen called upon to make a quick decision we need to be ready for refusing the wrong and choosing the right.\nOur world is well filled with those bent on doing evil and we need to have no part in it. When repeatedly sinned against by a brother who nonetheless repeatedly repents and asks for forgiveness\, we must be ready to give it.\nThe path you take through this day is not unlike a test track – often taxed to the limit and ever facing the unexpected. So watch yourself!

SUMMARY:"My Presence will go with you\, and I will give you rest" [Exodus 33:14(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“My Presence will go with you\, and I will give you rest”. This promise is for us today.\nIn the next verse Moses prays asking the Lord not to let them go forward if he does not go with them. We all have to move forward and Moses was saying he did not want to go forward without the Lord.\nSo often we do go ahead and many times we fail to listen or heed the signs in our path. One of my daughters-in-law told her children never to go out of her sight. It didn’t matter how far away they were so long as one could see the other. So it is with the Lord. We may feel alone in the midst of a wide world\, or called upon to make far reaching decisions\, but so long as we can see Him or know He is near we shall experience His peace in it all.

SUMMARY:"He has brought us to this place" [Deuteronomy 26:9(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He has brought us to this place”. After rehearsing God’s dealings with His People\, Moses is here showing them the manner in which they should come before the Lord with the offering of their firstfruits.\nIt was important that they should recognise that the Lord had brought them to the place where they now were. It is the same today. You are either where you are by the grace of God or in the wrong place!\nBut acknowledging that the Lord has brought you here causes thanksgiving to arise and praise for His greatness to you. It also encourages you to look with confidence to Him to keep your steps in the days that lie ahead.\nLooking to the future can be quite depressing: looking to the Lord will ever cause you to rejoice in His greatness.

SUMMARY:"perfect peace" [Isaiah 26:3]
DESCRIPTION:“perfect peace”. Uninterrupted\, undisturbed and unaffected by the bedlam that may be going on around; concerned but not conquered by events they behold; this describes perfect peace.\nThis verse gives the answer and the key – their mind is stayed on the Lord because their trust is in Him. As a result they are not afraid of the terror by night or the arrows of the evil one by day. They are sheltering under the wings of the Almighty – where safer could they be!\nWhen it is from the Lord that your strength is drawn\, you have a living stream that will not dry up.\nPerfect peace has a present and a future. If it could ever be lost at a future time it would not be perfect.\nDraw near to Jesus for it is the Lord who keeps His children in perfect peace. [AP]

SUMMARY:"about three in the afternoon he had a vision" [Acts 10:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“about three in the afternoon he had a vision”. These words relate to Cornelius. He was a Roman centurion with a devout and God-fearing family and one who gave generously to those in need and who prayed regularly. He was pointing the right way\, but needed something more.\nA vision of an angel started this for him and the matter concluded with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit after Peter visited his home and preached to them.\nFacing the right way and moving forward is good. Yet we need a heavenly vision and the leading of the Spirit of God to bring us to a place of repentance and commitment.\nIn the Old Testament we read that without a vision the people perish and this is true in the New Testament\, too.\nEach of us needs a vision of the pathway the Lord has for us and one so real that we cannot mistake it.

SUMMARY:"Be reconciled to God" [II Corinthians 5:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Be reconciled to God”. Reconciliation to God is no longer beyond man’s grasp.\nWe do not have to implore God to lay a pathway upon which we may tread. We read earlier that God has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ. He is the way back to God – a risen glorified Saviour.\nOur need – your need\, my need – is to tread that path of reconciliation. This is more than church attendance\, or religious observance. It is different from deeds of good or almsgiving in order to be accepted.\nReconciliation is effected in Jesus. All who would be reconciled must come to Him. The ministry of reconciliation is quite simply preaching Jesus. He reconciles whoever comes to God by Him and once reconciled God’s specific blessings can begin to flow into your life.

SUMMARY:"The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner" [Mark 12:10]
DESCRIPTION:“The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner”. When a babe\, Jesus was rejected by Herod. Early on in His ministry He was rejected by His own close family who did not believe in Him.\nThe crowd rejected Him on one occasion and tried to push Him over the edge of the cliff\, on another all began to desert Him when His teaching became unacceptable to them.\nFinally\, He was rejected and crucified. But the preaching of the Cross upon which He hung has become the focal point for the church. Every member of this mystical body of “living stones” is founded upon Jesus Christ\, the anointed Son of God. He is highly exalted. The rejected Son of Man has become our Exalted Head.

SUMMARY:"Giving thanks" [Colossians 1:12]
DESCRIPTION:“Giving thanks”. Paul’s Letter to the church at Colosse is soaked in thanks.\nWhen he and Timothy recalled the faith and love of the believers there\, they gave thanks. When he wrote his great prayer for the Christians in Colosse he included in it that they might give thanks to the Father who had made them fit to be partakers of salvation.\nLater on in the Letter he tells them whatever they do\, to do it in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.\nSo do we give thanks always? Do we recognise the blessings we have in Jesus? Only then will we give thanks in all things\, because we recognise God’s hand in them all.

SUMMARY:"the gift of God is eternal life" [Romans 6:23]
DESCRIPTION:“the gift of God is eternal life”. On a day when we examine our gifts more carefully and begin to enjoy them more fully\, can we pause to consider the greatest gift of all. Those who receive this gift find that its blessing begins now. The gift of eternal life makes all the difference to mortal or earthly life. Not only do I anticipate the blessing and joy of heaven but all I do now is related to it.\nI am encouraged to lay up treasure there\, to sow good seed now that will be reaped there\, to lift up my eyes and look upon the fields of the earth and discern what the Lord would have me to do\, knowing He promises wages.\nThis is so different from those who do not have the gift of eternal life. For such it must be doing all you can now\, for someday it must all be given up.\nReceive God’s gift of love in Jesus and enjoy it today.

SUMMARY:"born of a woman\, born under the law\, to redeem those under the law" [Galatians 4:4\,5 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“born of a woman\, born under the law\, to redeem those under the law”. Born a Jew\, raised as a Jew\, Jesus lived under the same demands of the law as every other Jew. There were no concessions for Christ. The demands of God’s law were to be fully met in Him if He was to be our Saviour. But met those demands were\, for He was without sin. Christ was born\, Immanuel – God with us.\nHe was born to die and become the ransom to redeem those living under the condemnation of God’s law. Thank God for Jesus today! Christ has lived the life\, paid the price and bought us back to belong to God. No longer under law but under the covering of God’s grace.\nWhat a gift! What a price! What a Saviour! [AP]

DESCRIPTION:“Where is the guestchamber …? “. Where is that place you said you’d give to the Lord for His service? What happened to all those promises you made in your youth? So often the ‘guestchamber’ reserved for the Lord has been occupied by somebody else. Or it has become cluttered with the junk of years and it is unfit for anyone’s use now. Others have moved into smaller premises and there is no guestchamber any more.\nJesus’ experience is like Joseph’s and Mary’s as far as many are concerned – ‘no room in the inn’. Time for all kinds of things but no time for what is the most important.\nThe Lord still asks ‘Where is the guestchamber?’ How marvellous that He wants to be guest with someone that is a sinner. DESCRIPTION:“the journey is too great for you”. The journey from earth to heaven is too great for you. You need help if you are to reach the journey’s end. The One Who pours strength into the faint needs to minister to you. Nothing less than the bread of heaven will satisfy your hungry soul. Elijah needed angel’s food and lesser prophets can manage on no less.\nThen the path of righteousness\, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit is too great for you\, too. Your effort is inadequate. SUMMARY:"they paid no attention" [II Chronicles 33:10(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they paid no attention”. Manasseh and his people paid no attention to the Lord.\nFailing to pay attention is a common fault and one that can be quite costly. When it relates to God’s voice\, inattention can cost us dearly.\nIt is a great honour to have God speak to us and those who hear His voice may regard themselves as highly favoured. He speaks lovingly and gently and what He says is for our good. It may be by way of correction or comfort\, it may challenge or chide us. But when we\, like Manasseh\, pay no attention there can but be dire consequences. They are unlikely to be as in Manasseh’s case\, when the Assyrian army came against him\, put a hook in his nose\, bound him with bronze shackles and took him to Babylon. But paying no attention to what God says can be equally unpleasant and eternally damning.

SUMMARY:"mourning into dancing" [Psalm 30:11]
DESCRIPTION:“mourning into dancing”. At times we may find much that makes us sad. Losses that cannot be retrieved are just cause for mourning. The music of life often reaches our ears as a minor refrain.\nOne glorious hope of the gospel message is that mourning will be turned to dancing. While accepting the gospel is cause for rejoicing\, subsequent persecution and suffering does cause heaviness.\nThe blessed hope is that all the sorrow of the night will pass away when the clouds of this life give way to the glory of eternity.\nThose outside Christ may wonder when sorrow will end. All whose trust is in Jesus look forward to that blessed meeting in the air when He shall return. And that is a blessed hope that need never be extinguished.

The two questioning disciples wanted to be first. Getting to the chief seat was their number one priority.\nWhen you ask to succeed even if it means pushing out others you have lost your way. When the blessing you seek from God is at the expense of others it is unlikely to be granted.\nJesus used this incident to show that the way up is down: those who desire greatness must become servants. It is a truth largely lost on the world today\, but a basic principle of Christian discipleship all the same.\nJesus humbled Himself to serve men: no one can be a true disciple unless prepared to do the same.

SUMMARY:"may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing" [II Kings 5:18(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing”. Naaman found himself in the unenviable position of having to do something in the course of duty that his newly awakened conscience told him was wrong.\nThe Lord\, the God of Israel\, had miraculously cleansed him of his leprosy and he was taking back to Syria (or Aram) two mule-loads of earth to establish an altar and promising never again to sacrifice to any but the Lord.\nThe problem came when in the course of his duty he went into the temple of Rimmon. He would need to bow to this god beside the king who would be leaning on his arm. It raised a difficult question which many since have had to face. In his case Elisha said “Go in peace.” The Lord will give us a ruling when such matters arise today.

SUMMARY:"when we were yet without strength\, in due time Christ died" [Romans 5:6]
DESCRIPTION:“when we were yet without strength\, in due time Christ died”.\n Without strength after many years striving for perfection: without strength to put oneself right\, never mind others:\n without strength to take a positive step towards God: without strength to drive the Evil One away:\n without strength to resist temptation: without strength to maintain a good testimony:\n without strength to steer a straight course: without strength to measure up to God’s Law:\n without strength to do anything that we might use to plead merit for salvation.\nOnly One can help. Only God’s grace can reach us and make strength out of our weakness. Those who accept His atoning sacrifice may know a strength that provides for our every need.

SUMMARY:"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" [John 3:6]
DESCRIPTION:“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit”. Those born of the flesh are mortal and must engage in the everyday world in which we move. Some things in this world are unseen\, like thought\, desire\, love and so on\, but all these find expression in the visible world.\nThose born of the Spirit enter a new dimension. It is an awareness of God and of a life in the Spirit. That new life is lived in the atmosphere of the Holy Spirit and is one that transcends earthly barriers and restrictions.\nThe door or entrance to that new life is the Lord Jesus\, who came and lived and died and rose again. He has paid the price for our sin and is able to save all who come to God through Him. Faith in His atoning sacrifice marks the beginning of a new relationship of the Holy Spirit. It is this that is the new birth.

SUMMARY:"Shake yourself from the dust" [Isaiah 52:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Shake yourself from the dust”. Timely words spoken to the inhabitants of Zion in preparation for their Messiah and timely words also to us who live in this evil generation. The dust of evil and deceit attaches to the finest of clothes: dust settles anywhere and\, given time\, whole civilisations are buried beneath it. The finer the instrument the more likely to be affected by dust.\nAll who would have garments clean and unspotted from the world\, must be continually shaking the dust off that collects on them. Everyone who would be ready for the return of Christ should shake off the sin that easily besets us.\nThe garment of praise that the Lord gives for the spirit of heaviness is truly beautiful. But it only remains so by constant vigil keeping it unspotted from the world.

SUMMARY:"the woman made haste\, and ran" [Judges 13:10]
DESCRIPTION:“the woman made haste\, and ran”. Manoah’s wife is among those who\, when the Lord appeared or called\, made haste. She ran to tell her husband because the news was so exciting and dramatic – she was to have a son who was to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines.\nZacchaeus made haste when Jesus said He was coming to his house.\nPhilip ran alongside the chariot in which the Eunuch rode when he realised this was the man to whom God had called him to proclaim the gospel. David hastened and ran toward the attacking Philistine giant when believing God would deliver him.\nThey ran to the tent to uncover Achan’s sin when they realised his theft was the cause of their defeat.\nNow then\, what running have you done for the Lord?

SUMMARY:"We can" [Mark 10:39]
DESCRIPTION:“We can”. ‘We can’ is a card that gets you anywhere. It knows no closed doors or separating barriers. The two words can be trotted out without thought to silence those who would prefer to first give more thought to the matter. They are the words of the mavericks\, the self-opinionated\, the lawless and blinkered members of society. I think they stem from the Garden of Eden where the serpent told Eve ‘God says you can’t\, but you can’.\nJesus said\, ‘Can you drink the cup that I drink of and be baptised with my baptism?’ The two disciples were obsessed with the thought of seats next to Jesus in His Kingdom\, so in answer to His question they glibly said\, ‘We can’. The others were ‘up in arms’ when they heard it.\nThe only way ‘you can’ is through Christ. As Paul said ‘I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me’.

SUMMARY:"the mystery of God should be finished" [Revelation 10:7]
DESCRIPTION:“the mystery of God should be finished”. This life is full of mysteries – many are found in man’s search for his Maker. The Holy Spirit leads souls into all truth by revealing the mysteries found in God’s Word.\nThere is the mystery of God’s will\, the mystery revealed through the apostles and prophets\, the mystery of fellowship and the mystery of the gospel – to mention but a few and all mentioned in Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians.\nBut not all our questions will be answered until that great day when the purpose of God in allowing this world to continue for so long will be revealed. Then the crooked will be made straight and the rough places plain.\nThe knowledge that this day is coming should allow our minds to be at peace. Mysteries that remain for the present need in no way obstruct our faith.

SUMMARY:Blessed be the Lord\, because he has heard the voice of my supplications" [Psalm 28:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed be the Lord\, because he has heard the voice of my supplications”. The Psalmist thanks the Lord for hearing his requests. Do we thank Him for hearing us? It may be he thanked the Lord before the answer came – just for hearing and attending to him. He knew that if God heard He would act and answer.\nIn the first part of the psalm his plea to God was that God should not be silent to him. He expressed how we all feel when we pray and yet have no assurance that our prayer has been heard.\nSuch a period of silence causes us to cry more fervently upon God and makes us encourage our fearful hearts in the promises of His Word.\nThe assurance of God’s care should make us bless the Lord with great rejoicing and praise in song.

SUMMARY:"easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle" [ Mark 10:25]
DESCRIPTION:“easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle”. Impossible without a miracle! Some think Jesus was referring to the need for the rider to dismount before entering through the Eye Gate of the city. Whatever it was\, His words amazed the disciples who asked\, “Who then can be saved?”\nWhat the world calls riches can be the greatest hindrance to entry into the kingdom of heaven: they easily become possessive to the exclusion of all else.\nOn the other hand\, those with something to give away (and we all have this) should seize the opportunity. Jesus told a rich young ruler to give what he had to the poor and follow Him: then he would have treasure in heaven.\nThe camel through the needle difficulty can be overcome!

SUMMARY:"For the battle is not yours\, but God's" [II Chronicles 20:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“For the battle is not yours\, but God’s”. This is a real comfort for those of us who are in such a battle. It indicates that the Lord himself fights for us.\nLike Jehoshaphat and his army\, we may be vastly outnumbered but we need not fear or be discouraged – the battle belongs to the Lord. Paul made it clear that we don’t fight against flesh and blood\, but against principalities and powers.\nThe Lord’s way of fighting is very different from human ways. Our part is to exalt the Lord\, just like the people of Judah did and declare that the Lord reigns. Don’t be put off by appearances but stand firm on God’s promises and ‘see the deliverance the Lord will give you.’ [AP]
