SUMMARY:"may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing" [II Kings 5:18(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“may the Lord forgive your servant for this one thing”. Naaman found himself in the unenviable position of having to do something in the course of duty that his newly awakened conscience told him was wrong.\nThe Lord\, the God of Israel\, had miraculously cleansed him of his leprosy and he was taking back to Syria (or Aram) two mule-loads of earth to establish an altar and promising never again to sacrifice to any but the Lord.\nThe problem came when in the course of his duty he went into the temple of Rimmon. He would need to bow to this god beside the king who would be leaning on his arm. It raised a difficult question which many since have had to face. In his case Elisha said “Go in peace.” The Lord will give us a ruling when such matters arise today.

SUMMARY:"when we were yet without strength\, in due time Christ died" [Romans 5:6]
DESCRIPTION:“when we were yet without strength\, in due time Christ died”.\n Without strength after many years striving for perfection: without strength to put oneself right\, never mind others:\n without strength to take a positive step towards God: without strength to drive the Evil One away:\n without strength to resist temptation: without strength to maintain a good testimony:\n without strength to steer a straight course: without strength to measure up to God’s Law:\n without strength to do anything that we might use to plead merit for salvation.\nOnly One can help. Only God’s grace can reach us and make strength out of our weakness. Those who accept His atoning sacrifice may know a strength that provides for our every need.

SUMMARY:"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit" [John 3:6]
DESCRIPTION:“That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit”. Those born of the flesh are mortal and must engage in the everyday world in which we move. Some things in this world are unseen\, like thought\, desire\, love and so on\, but all these find expression in the visible world.\nThose born of the Spirit enter a new dimension. It is an awareness of God and of a life in the Spirit. That new life is lived in the atmosphere of the Holy Spirit and is one that transcends earthly barriers and restrictions.\nThe door or entrance to that new life is the Lord Jesus\, who came and lived and died and rose again. He has paid the price for our sin and is able to save all who come to God through Him. Faith in His atoning sacrifice marks the beginning of a new relationship of the Holy Spirit. It is this that is the new birth.

SUMMARY:"Shake yourself from the dust" [Isaiah 52:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Shake yourself from the dust”. Timely words spoken to the inhabitants of Zion in preparation for their Messiah and timely words also to us who live in this evil generation. The dust of evil and deceit attaches to the finest of clothes: dust settles anywhere and\, given time\, whole civilisations are buried beneath it. The finer the instrument the more likely to be affected by dust.\nAll who would have garments clean and unspotted from the world\, must be continually shaking the dust off that collects on them. Everyone who would be ready for the return of Christ should shake off the sin that easily besets us.\nThe garment of praise that the Lord gives for the spirit of heaviness is truly beautiful. But it only remains so by constant vigil keeping it unspotted from the world.

SUMMARY:"the woman made haste\, and ran" [Judges 13:10]
DESCRIPTION:“the woman made haste\, and ran”. Manoah’s wife is among those who\, when the Lord appeared or called\, made haste. She ran to tell her husband because the news was so exciting and dramatic – she was to have a son who was to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines.\nZacchaeus made haste when Jesus said He was coming to his house.\nPhilip ran alongside the chariot in which the Eunuch rode when he realised this was the man to whom God had called him to proclaim the gospel. David hastened and ran toward the attacking Philistine giant when believing God would deliver him.\nThey ran to the tent to uncover Achan’s sin when they realised his theft was the cause of their defeat.\nNow then\, what running have you done for the Lord?

SUMMARY:"We can" [Mark 10:39]
DESCRIPTION:“We can”. ‘We can’ is a card that gets you anywhere. It knows no closed doors or separating barriers. The two words can be trotted out without thought to silence those who would prefer to first give more thought to the matter. They are the words of the mavericks\, the self-opinionated\, the lawless and blinkered members of society. I think they stem from the Garden of Eden where the serpent told Eve ‘God says you can’t\, but you can’.\nJesus said\, ‘Can you drink the cup that I drink of and be baptised with my baptism?’ The two disciples were obsessed with the thought of seats next to Jesus in His Kingdom\, so in answer to His question they glibly said\, ‘We can’. The others were ‘up in arms’ when they heard it.\nThe only way ‘you can’ is through Christ. As Paul said ‘I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me’.

SUMMARY:"the mystery of God should be finished" [Revelation 10:7]
DESCRIPTION:“the mystery of God should be finished”. This life is full of mysteries – many are found in man’s search for his Maker. The Holy Spirit leads souls into all truth by revealing the mysteries found in God’s Word.\nThere is the mystery of God’s will\, the mystery revealed through the apostles and prophets\, the mystery of fellowship and the mystery of the gospel – to mention but a few and all mentioned in Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians.\nBut not all our questions will be answered until that great day when the purpose of God in allowing this world to continue for so long will be revealed. Then the crooked will be made straight and the rough places plain.\nThe knowledge that this day is coming should allow our minds to be at peace. Mysteries that remain for the present need in no way obstruct our faith.

SUMMARY:Blessed be the Lord\, because he has heard the voice of my supplications" [Psalm 28:6(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed be the Lord\, because he has heard the voice of my supplications”. The Psalmist thanks the Lord for hearing his requests. Do we thank Him for hearing us? It may be he thanked the Lord before the answer came – just for hearing and attending to him. He knew that if God heard He would act and answer.\nIn the first part of the psalm his plea to God was that God should not be silent to him. He expressed how we all feel when we pray and yet have no assurance that our prayer has been heard.\nSuch a period of silence causes us to cry more fervently upon God and makes us encourage our fearful hearts in the promises of His Word.\nThe assurance of God’s care should make us bless the Lord with great rejoicing and praise in song.

SUMMARY:"easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle" [ Mark 10:25]
DESCRIPTION:“easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle”. Impossible without a miracle! Some think Jesus was referring to the need for the rider to dismount before entering through the Eye Gate of the city. Whatever it was\, His words amazed the disciples who asked\, “Who then can be saved?”\nWhat the world calls riches can be the greatest hindrance to entry into the kingdom of heaven: they easily become possessive to the exclusion of all else.\nOn the other hand\, those with something to give away (and we all have this) should seize the opportunity. Jesus told a rich young ruler to give what he had to the poor and follow Him: then he would have treasure in heaven.\nThe camel through the needle difficulty can be overcome!

SUMMARY:"For the battle is not yours\, but God's" [II Chronicles 20:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“For the battle is not yours\, but God’s”. This is a real comfort for those of us who are in such a battle. It indicates that the Lord himself fights for us.\nLike Jehoshaphat and his army\, we may be vastly outnumbered but we need not fear or be discouraged – the battle belongs to the Lord. Paul made it clear that we don’t fight against flesh and blood\, but against principalities and powers.\nThe Lord’s way of fighting is very different from human ways. Our part is to exalt the Lord\, just like the people of Judah did and declare that the Lord reigns. Don’t be put off by appearances but stand firm on God’s promises and ‘see the deliverance the Lord will give you.’ [AP]

SUMMARY:"you too will appear with him" [Colossians 3:4(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“you too will appear with him”. Because Christ has not appeared the Christian can be described as living by faith. His faith is in Christ; Christ is his hope. In another place Paul says that if Christ be not raised from the dead our hope is in vain.\nWhen Jesus returns again every eye will see Him. And Jesus promises that all who make Him Lord will appear with Him in glory.\nAt that day there will be no more need for faith. There will be no fear that the blissful state will end. We shall be forever with the Lord.\nOur finite minds cannot comprehend the glory that is to be revealed. But we can be among those who love His appearing and know that at that day we shall appear with Him in glory.

SUMMARY:"He has done all things well" [Mark 7:37]
DESCRIPTION:“He has done all things well”. Such is the testimony of those who move closest to the Lord Jesus. They had seen the Canaanite woman go home and find her daughter healed and they listened as the former deaf mute spoke plainly.\nThe measure of your acclaim for Christ is directly related to the way you allow Him into your life. An isolated encounter may result in an outstanding experience. A regular communion and involvement and you will know He does all things well. In this\, Jesus is unique. Get to know any other and at some stage you will find a flaw or weakness. Getting to know Jesus reveals the One Who is sinless and perfect for He is the Son of God.\nMake known your testimony of Him today – ‘He has done all things well’.

SUMMARY:"give me understanding" [Psalm 119:73]
DESCRIPTION:“give me understanding”. The Psalmist acknowledged that it was the Lord who made and fashioned him. His plea therefore is for the Maker’s instructions to be made known to him.\nThe specific understanding he requested was enlightenment regarding the Lord’s commandments. He wanted his life to be lived in accordance with these. Only in this way would he be of maximum benefit and blessing to all whom he met.\nThe Psalmist expected those who fear the Lord and obey Him to be glad when they see him. He is referring to what now is true Christian fellowship.\nWith the problems and perplexities you have to face\, is not this just the prayer for you – ‘Lord\, give me understanding’?

SUMMARY:"all the sons of God shouted for joy" [Job 38:7]
DESCRIPTION:“all the sons of God shouted for joy”. That was at the dawn of creation – before sin entered and marred its beauty.\nThe Psalmist said that the Lord is gone up with a great shout. The processional hymn for the King of Glory is one of triumph. When the walls of Jericho fell flat it was that final blast of trumpets and shout that did it. Gideon’s men needed to shout as well as to break their pitchers before they routed the enemy. Israel brought up the ark with shouting after its captivity by the Philistines. The blind and the leper shouted when Jesus passed by: the whole city went after Him shouting when He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey.\nBut the greatest is yet to be – the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout. Those who trust in Him now will share with Him then.

SUMMARY:"now he is comforted and you are tormented" [Luke 16:25(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“now he is comforted and you are tormented”. As the poverty gap widens in our day\, these words of Jesus take on added importance to us.\nThe story was probably based on a similar tale well known in Jesus’ day. The rich man had everything\, the beggar nothing. Perhaps he made the same excuses for doing nothing that we hear today. Excuses like – he only lived as is expected of rich men: the beggar did nothing to help himself: the plight he is in was brought on by himself\, and so on.\nOr the rich man feared that aid given did not get to the needy.\nYet the truth was that he was comfortable and the beggar miserable. Jesus’ teaching is that this state of affairs will one day be changed. It was sad the rich man didn’t act while he had opportunity. Are we taking the message to heart?

SUMMARY:"Christ's love compels us" [II Corinthians 5:14(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Christ’s love compels us”. This explains why Saul of Tarsus was converted to Christ – it is the reason why men and women all down the years have been doing the same.\nPaul came into contact with Christ’s love on the Damascus Road\, when he discovered that the One Whom he was persecuting loved him and graciously revealed Himself to him.\nWhen he asked the Lord what He wanted him to do\, it was revealed to him that he would have to suffer in his appointment as ‘Ambassador to the Gentiles’. But he didn’t flinch or ‘chicken out’. The inspiration he received at his conversion was enough to send him anywhere.\nChrist’s love compelled him to throw away lesser crowns to gain a greater. It will do the same for us.

SUMMARY:"it shall come to pass\, that at evening time it shall be light" [Zechariah 14:7]
DESCRIPTION:“it shall come to pass\, that at evening time it shall be light”. This promise does not apply to the ungodly man who has followed his own desires all his days – his evenings must be very dark.\nIt is the man for whom evening time brings its special beauty and comfort. It describes the way a soul can gain respite and peace when the storm is passed.\nLife has its thunder clouds and storms for us all. We become distressed\, depressed and wounded as we struggle to gain a better position. Then we realise that the Lord is in control\, that all these matters worrying us are in His hand. The pieces of the puzzle fit together. Faith takes over from fear. We become a fulfilment of Zechariah’s prophecy regarding Israel – at evening we find it is light.

SUMMARY:"Hallelujah" [Revelation 19:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Hallelujah”. The note of praise that is heard when we see the Lord high and exalted upon the Throne.\nThe word that escapes our lips as we experience the saving\, cleansing\, keeping power of the Lord Jesus.\nIt is the blessed refrain of those who ask in faith for the good gifts that a loving heavenly Father delights to give His children. We say it when someone else is blessed – when a soul is saved or a backslider restored – others say it when they see us blessed.\nIt is breathed under the anointing of the Holy Spirit – a word that frees the tongues of the Lord’s People.\nRecognisable in every language it is ascending from hearts all over the earth. SUMMARY:"Do all that is in your heart\, for God is with you" [I Chronicles 17:2(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Do all that is in your heart\, for God is with you”. King David sat meditating in his palace. He mused upon God’s goodness to him and as he looked around the cedar panelling\, he recalled the sheep-fold that had been his home in his earlier years.\nThen the idea struck him to build a house for the Lord in place of the tent Tabernacle. That his spiritual advisor\, Nathan the prophet was visiting him at the time enabled him to get the go-ahead from the Lord. Though this was later confined to collecting materials\, it is true to say that Solomon’s Temple was David’s inspired idea.\nDavid’s meditation was on the Lord. It is when meditation is upon Him that lasting blessing comes from the exercise.

SUMMARY:"his going forth is sure as the dawn" [Hosea 6:3(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“his going forth is sure as the dawn”. The Lord is ready for the new day before you are. He knows just what the day holds for you before dawn breaks or ever you are roused from your night’s rest. He ensures that the sun that floods the other side of the earth will soon give its light to you. You decide what you do with the day.\nThe prophet’s plea to Israel was that they should return to the Lord saying\, “If He has torn\, He will heal.”\nUse the day to move forward in life. Let one day older mean one day nearer Him. The prophet’s promise to Israel is certainly God’s promise to us. He will come to us as the showers\, as the spring rains that water the earth.\nWhat you do for the Lord in the day will not be in vain. The dawn that is sure holds a blessing that is special – prepared for you today by the Lord.

SUMMARY:"the other disciples came in a little ship" [John 21:8]
DESCRIPTION:“the other disciples came in a little ship”. A triple denial\, remorseful weeping and subsequent restoration had not altered Peter’s position as leader.\nBut the other disciples performed an important\, albeit less spectacular role. This describes the lot of most of us. Yet dragging the net to land full of fishes was very important.\nYour ship (vessel) may look small alongside some of the mighty cruisers that pass from time to time. But if it’s in dragging the net to shore in which you’re engaged\, it is a mighty operation.\nDon’t be anxious about getting a larger and better vessel – to usefully fill the one you’ve got is of prime importance.\nA little ship sailing for God is infinitely better than a liner cruising with the Devil.

SUMMARY:"a well-to-do woman" [II Kings 4:8(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“a well-to-do woman”. Elisha was a frequent and welcome guest\, so much so that this lady had a room specially made for him as his own\, whenever he came by. Her hospitality and generosity is an example to us all. Yet there is much more to this lady. As her story unfolds we see a determination and a faith that set her apart. This lady did not stand on ceremony. One pictures her rolling up her sleeves and getting stuck in. She was a woman of action and resolve who didn’t seek favours because of her wealth. Her humility and honesty are refreshing and she stands as a beacon in the Old Testament. Whatever you have\, give it back to the Lord. Be generous\, be humble and the Lord will bless you and make you a blessing to others.

SUMMARY:"don't show favouritism" [James 2:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“don’t show favouritism”. A word of warning and encouragement. Favouritism comes in all shapes and guises. How easily we show it and receive it without noticing\, but how quick we are to notice when others are involved or we are excluded. Favouritism shown to Joseph resulted in envy and jealousy amongst his brothers. Favouritism sought by James and John seriously upset the rest of the disciples. Favouritism will always have negative consequences which is why James warns us against it. It is the way of the world and not of God’s people. It is of the old nature and must be checked. The encouragement is to be impartial. Jesus encouraged us to deliberately show kindness to those who have no influence or high position and so cannot repay us. A blessing is promised.

SUMMARY:"I am the living bread which came down from heaven" [John 6:51]
DESCRIPTION:“I am the living bread which came down from heaven”. The words of Jesus are more than food for thought\, they are food for the hungry souls of men. In His parables we see the Creator taking objects from His creation to explain the truths of the Kingdom.\nGaze at the miracles of Jesus and be convinced that this is the Son of God living and moving among His People. But until and unless you receive the Lord Himself you have not tasted of the Living Bread. It is when the soul of a man or woman feeds upon the Saviour – not merely what he said or did – that heaven itself enters the soul.\nTo experience His cleansing\, regenerating and commissioning power makes for the cry ‘Evermore feed our souls with this Bread!’

SUMMARY:"she stood in the doorway" [II Kings 4:15(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“she stood in the doorway”. Did this Shunammite woman fill the doorway\, waiting to receive what she needed? Was she like Jacob who wrestled with the angel and at daybreak when the angel wanted to depart\, would not let him go until he blessed him.\nShe was a dominant character having got her husband to build on a room for the prophet Elisha but she had great sorrow of heart because she was childless. When Elisha called her to ask what he could do for her she stood in the doorway. Neither in nor out\, she wanted to know what God’s promise was for her.\nToday there are some standing in the doorway\, waiting to hear what God would say to them. If you know such\, don’t wait for someone else to tell them. You speak out.

SUMMARY:"Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen\, and Amen" [Psalm 89:52]
DESCRIPTION:“Blessed be the Lord for evermore. Amen\, and Amen”. This is the exultant conclusion to a psalm of praise. It is a long psalm and covers much ground and concludes as though the Psalmist is saying that we should go on praising Him for ever. So we should!\nThe praising heart has a contented life\, one that recognises God’s hand is in control and that all things are working to fulfil His eternal purpose. Blessing the Lord is adding your contribution\, small though it may seem\, to the great volume of praise that ascends to heaven. It ensures you breathe the atmosphere of heaven and are in tune with its melody.\nThe double “Amen” suggests that we cannot emphasise this enough. It is asking all who hear to join in. Not one “Amen” but a never-ending cycle of blessing the Lord.

SUMMARY:"if he lose one" [Luke 15:4]
DESCRIPTION:“if he lose one”. The loss was only temporary: all the shepherd’s energy and resources were concentrated upon finding the lost lamb.\nIn another Gospel Jesus prayed to His Father that none of those given to Him had been lost. So we see that the ‘search and find’ operations mounted for those that strayed had been successful. This has ever remained the same.\nWhen it appears that a true child of God has begun to stray\, or has lost its way\, the rescue machinery of heaven focuses upon that individual.\nIt is when your feet begin to slip that you feel the grip of the Lord tighten and when you collapse that you feel His arms beneath you.\n‘If he lose one’ sets heaven’s breakdown service in operation.

SUMMARY:"But we see Jesus" [Hebrews 2:9]
DESCRIPTION:“But we see Jesus”. Many things in life we cannot see and many things we can see we cannot understand. The reason why things are as they are baffles the mind of man. As the Apostle Paul wrote\, ‘We see through a glass darkly’.\nIf left like this\, it would present a forlorn picture. But there is One Who changes things completely. It is Jesus Christ\, God’s Son. Sight of Him can bring hope to the hopeless\, joy to the sorrowing and even life to the dead.\nSeeing Jesus and following Him is knowing where you’re going. He is Shepherd\, Saviour\, Lord and Master in one. He reveals the heart of God to the mind of man. Peace\, joy and comfort follow when it’s Jesus you see.

SUMMARY:"they heard the voice of the Lord God" [Genesis 3:8]
DESCRIPTION:“they heard the voice of the Lord God”. God called Adam and Eve before He came down to walk with them in the Garden of Eden. And even when they had disobeyed they heard his voice calling.\nHe still calls today. Though God is hidden to our eye\, His voice may still be heard. That voice reaches the heart of man in a variety of ways – conscience\, calamity\, great upheaval\, fear\, loss and so on. Sometimes hearing only follows much listening. At others it comes clearly and unexpectedly.\nWhile still in Eden\, man could not ignore that voice any more than he could hide from God’s presence.\nToday man can ignore it and many do. But it is a suicidal path with destruction its end. Happiest are those who hear\, acknowledge and await further instructions.

SUMMARY:"Hear him! " [Matthew 17:5(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Hear him! “. God Who gave His only Son to save the world is anxious that men and women in all generations should hear and give heed to what He says.\nThe words of Jesus uttered on the hills of Palestine have been carefully preserved in the four Gospels and their message carried out by His followers everywhere. Have they reached you?\nJesus’ words were spoken in a way that the common man could understand. Do you appreciate what Jesus meant?\nHis words were with power – a factor that even His enemies confessed distinguished Him from all others. None of that power has been lost. Have you experienced it in your life? You no doubt know He said something\, but did you hear what He said?
