SUMMARY:"To whom then will you liken God? " [Isaiah 40:18(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“To whom then will you liken God? “. Any who would do justice to the answer should read the ensuing verses written by the prophet Isaiah in this chapter.\nThey are a salient reminder to those who consider God to be as a man\, and a disinterested one at that.\nGod will not be manipulated and cannot be hoodwinked. He sees through your elaborate façade even when you believe your own imaginations. Furthermore\, He cannot be ignored – or if you do so it is at your peril.\nHe is a gracious and loving heavenly Father seeking not the death of any sinner. His love is best expressed in the gift of His Son.\nHe pours strength into all who will recognise their need and turn to Him for help and salvation.

SUMMARY:"God our Saviour" [I Timothy 2:3]
DESCRIPTION:“God our Saviour”. The most wonderful revelation about God is that He became our Saviour. God is far greater than we can picture or imagine\, yet the Bible says that He is not far from any one of us. To save us He needed to stoop right down to where we were. Love was the motivating force that made Him do this – “God loved the world so much” the Bible says.\nAfter His atoning death\, Jesus descended into hell and preached to the spirits in prison that none need perish but all may be saved if they will believe. Better than realising He is God our Saviour is to be able to say\, “God who saved me”.\nHe did not save Himself\, but died for us that whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

SUMMARY:"pray for those who persecute you" [Matthew 5:44(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“pray for those who persecute you”. This should not be merely that they may cease the opposition\, our prayer should be that persecutors will turn into proclaimers – telling what God has done for them and how they have been changed after meeting with the Lord. It is very likely that many were praying in Damascus for Saul of Tarsus whom they heard was coming to imprison them.\nGod works in answer to prayer: He tells us that we often do not receive because we do not ask. We do not know who prayed for Saul but can be assured that there were those who did – not just for themselves but for their persecutors.\nHere their prayers were answered! Saul did a right about turn after his Damascus Road experience. He immediately began to preach the One whom he persecuted as the “Son of God”. It’s worth praying for the persecutors.

SUMMARY:"he preached Christ in the synagogues\, that he is the Son of God" [Acts 9:20]
DESCRIPTION:“he preached Christ in the synagogues\, that he is the Son of God”. Saul\, later called Paul\, had a complete turn around when he met Jesus on the road to Damascus. Before he preached negatively – that he thought it right to do many things against Christ and His followers. Now he preached positively – that Christ is the Son of God.\nThat Jesus is the Son of God is the very kernel of truth and the starting point from which other truths develop. It denotes the Incarnation in the virgin birth: it validates all the claims Jesus made in His teaching. It explains the miracles when He stilled the storm\, walked on the water and when demons fled before Him. It provides assurance of salvation\, the power of the Holy Spirit to live a godly life and the hope of the resurrection. This and everything else because Jesus is the Son of God.

SUMMARY:"Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt" [Genesis 42:1]
DESCRIPTION:“Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt”. Just as Jacob did not know why famine struck the land of Canaan\, but later found it in God’s purpose\, so there is a purpose in every difficulty and dryness that besets us.\nGod has His hand upon every turn in life’s way for each one of His children. The Lord knows what is hidden to us. Jacob thought Joseph was dead when in fact he was premier of Egypt.\nJacob did not want to go down to Egypt but when he saw there was corn there he turned to it to assuage his pangs of hunger. God may lead you in a path you would not choose to go\, but if He is leading you\, there is nothing to fear and blessing at the end of the way. Realise that God sometimes directs through circumstances and once you are certain it is the Lord\, go for it!

SUMMARY:"a woman in the crowd called out" [Luke 11:27(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“a woman in the crowd called out”. This Teacher was so wonderful that this woman called out “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.” No doubt many could say “Amen” to that.\nEverybody learned from this woman’s interjection. We are told very little about the years when Mary nursed and mothered Jesus\, but realise she must have made many sacrifices as would any loving mother.\nJesus took the opportunity to tell us of those who are more blessed – those who hear the Word of God and obey it.\nWhat use Mary bringing up her son in His tender years\, if no-one believes the message He preached?\nSee what a great job Mary the mother of Jesus did\, and many other servants of the Lord\, but be sure to hear the voice of Jesus speaking to you and obey Him!

SUMMARY:"And the Lord was with Joseph" [Genesis 39:2]
DESCRIPTION:“And the Lord was with Joseph”. We are not told when Joseph was aware of this. It is unlikely he felt this when his brothers set upon him and put him in a pit\, then sold him to the Midianite merchants\, Ishmeelites\, for twenty pieces of silver and he then was sold as a slave to Potiphar\, an officer of Pharoah in Egypt.\nIn fact\, it was others\, his master in particular\, who noted that whatever he did prospered. No doubt Joseph realised that God was preserving his life as he later told his brethren when they came down to Egypt during his premiership.\nThe Lord with Joseph did not mean he was exempt from sorrow\, disappointment\, intrigue and injustice. It did mean that he recognised God was there and it is the same today with those who are the children of God.

SUMMARY:"who comforts us in all our tribulation" [II Corinthians 1:4(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“who comforts us in all our tribulation”. There is no trouble that will befall you but God is ready to comfort you and get you through it. No burden need crush you\, no sorrow paralyse you and no persecution make you give up if it is the God of all comfort who is with you.\nJesus promised to be with His disciples to the end of the age: this is through the ministration of the Holy Spirit whom Jesus described as “The Comforter”. He lifts you when you’re down: He encourages you when disheartened and leads you to safety when in danger. It is not a case of whether God can help you but whether you will put yourself in His hands. This is what trust is.\nIt is faith in God that brings comfort to the troubled soul.

SUMMARY:"But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? " [II Chronicles 6:18(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? “. Solomon wondered how God\, who made the Universe and all that is in it\, could dwell in the temple He had built. Many do think that God set things in motion and then left His laws to work themselves out. (Though it is interesting to note that many\, if not all\, of these people will call to God when in deep trouble). We would still be wondering today but for the glorious fact of the Incarnation when God in Christ became man and lived among us.\nWe know that God can dwell with men\, for since Jesus returned to heaven having purchased our salvation and sent the Holy Spirit\, God dwells in the hearts of those who call upon Him in true repentance and faith. The kingdom of God is within the hearts of Jesus’ disciples.

SUMMARY:"What thing is this? " [Mark 1:27]
DESCRIPTION:“What thing is this? “. When Jesus stood to speak in the synagogue in Capernaum and rebuked the evil spirit in a man and healed him\, the people wondered what had hit them!\nThey asked what new doctrine He preached\, for the authority with which He spoke and acted was unprecedented. This was no mere prophet. Soon Jesus’ authority was to be ratified by His passion and death and the new life in Christ be proclaimed far and wide. Men today are still asking “What thing is this?” when the message reaches them for the first time. It is the newest thing you will ever know; will never be out-dated or replaced and as His Second Advent draws near and new testimonies reach our ears\, it is better than ever.

SUMMARY:"we were like those who dreamed" [Psalm 126:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“we were like those who dreamed”. This sentiment can be the experience of all who trust the Lord.\nThe Lord frees the captive\, sets the solitary in families\, turns sadness to joy and makes the lame to leap and dance.\nAll such achievements are ‘daydreams’ until the Lord graciously makes them a reality.\nOnce there seemed no end to the tunnel: darkness enveloped the way continually. One problem followed another: There was no refuge to be found and no respite was to be felt. Then the Lord brought back the captives. He filled mouths with laughter and tongues proclaimed songs of joy. The whole outlook changed\, even bystanders remarked on what the Lord was doing. The living Lord Jesus makes the wildest dream of blessing a present reality.

SUMMARY:"the exceeding riches of his grace" [Ephesians 2:7]
DESCRIPTION:“the exceeding riches of his grace”. These riches will never be exhausted. Grace is both unmerited and freely given. God’s riches exceed our expectation and then are more wonderful than we could ever have imagined. They reached their highest point when Jesus gave Himself for the redemption of those who would believe.\nThe riches of His grace in salvation are as fresh and as free today as when they were forged in Christ’s obedience to His Father’s will. Come to Christ today for salvation and it is as real as if you received the assurance of the dying thief that repented. Go out and tell in obedience to His call or take up your cross and follow Him and it could be as though you were in the days of the Acts of the Apostles. The riches of His grace exceed and excel.

SUMMARY:"they went out\, and preached that men should repent" [Mark 6:12]
DESCRIPTION:“they went out\, and preached that men should repent”. “Repent” was the first point in Jesus’ preaching and He told His disciples to make theirs the same. It is an essential that can easily get omitted. Men must turn from their way to God’s way if they would find the Lord.\nRepentance is stimulated by conviction. No need to argue the case\, when a man is convicted he must repent if he would be saved. The disciples were not told to preach repentance to some\, but to all men. Good people are not good enough or Jesus would not have needed to come and save us.\nTrying hard to reform and to believe and do good things is not the first step. The first is to repent\, the second to believe the gospel. Be careful that the message you convey does not avoid the first step.

SUMMARY:"Deborah\, Rebekah's nurse died\, and she was buried beneath Bethel" [Genesis 35:8]
DESCRIPTION:“Deborah\, Rebekah’s nurse died\, and she was buried beneath Bethel”. This is the first of two Deborahs in the Bible\, the second being a prophetess and judge in Israel. We are only told of the first when she died though she must have made a deep impression upon the life of Rebekah and the household of Isaac. Probably the nurse who accompanied Rebekah when she left home in Mesopotamia to be Isaac’s wife and live in Canaan\, she had a long and faithful service. That she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak indicates the esteem in which she was held. It may be that this single reference to Deborah by name is there to remind us that we all can serve the Lord by our work for those He has placed over us.\n“Bethel” means “the house of God” and that is where we find our eternal resting place.

SUMMARY:"What has happened to all your joy? " [Galatians 4:15(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“What has happened to all your joy? “. One way to judge your walk with the Lord is how much joy in the Lord you have. This is not superficial but a deep joy that derives its source from the peace He gives.\nIt is joy that is there in the midst of sorrow. Turbulence\, persecution and trouble cannot deprive you of it.\nSome of the Galatian believers lost their joy because they embraced erroneous teaching. They listened to those who taught them to observe ceremonies and ordinances for their salvation. And Paul felt he had wasted his efforts on them.\nAll that is done in unbelief is sin and sin deprives the believer of his joy. The devil would turn the believer’s freedom into bondage again and keeping the law instead of keeping the faith. Keep close to the Lord and you will keep the joy of the Lord as your strength.

SUMMARY:"See that you do not refuse him who speaks" [Hebrews 12:25(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“See that you do not refuse him who speaks”. We can wilfully refuse to listen and obey God or we may do so without realising it. Because we do not train our ear to hear His voice or take time out to seek His face or are too busy and miss it\, we may bring condemnation upon ourselves.\nReceptivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit in the lives of those who are born of the Spirit is an essential quality to develop if we would walk in His way and know the blessing of life for evermore.\nIt is both a privilege and an honour to know God is speaking and something that we need to seek after. Refusing Him because we do not like what we hear is a great tragedy because He only speaks to His children for their blessing and good.

SUMMARY:"Arise\, and do not be afraid" [Matthew 17:7(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Arise\, and do not be afraid”. The disciples fell on their faces and were greatly afraid when the voice of God the Father was heard on the Mount of Transfiguration.\nNo human eye can gaze upon God and no ear catch His voice without great consternation gripping the heart.\nBut for the disciple the eye of faith must see and the ear of the heart receive\, if there is to be a ratification of the work of redemption in the heart. Whether the penitent or the backslider or the abject failures we all know ourselves to be at times\, the awfulness of God’s holiness strikes fear into our frail spirits.\nOn these occasions Jesus\, our Mediator\, summons us to stand up and not be afraid. SUMMARY:"remembering you in my prayers" [Ephesians 1:16(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“remembering you in my prayers”. Paul’s prayer is personal. He knows the saints in Ephesus. He knows their situation and their needs. He is encouraged by their faith in Christ and their love for all the saints.\nPaul’s prayer is persistent. His thanks to God for their example and encouragement is ongoing and he keeps petitioning God on their behalf. His longing is for them to grow even more in their knowledge and experience of Christ.\nPaul’s prayer is purposeful. He wants them to keep growing\, to know the Lord better and not to become complacent. They may be doing well so far\, but Paul makes it clear that there’s more to be done. God’s call on his Church is not simply to make a good start but to keep going and finish well. [ AP]

DESCRIPTION:“See to it\, then\, that the light within you is not darkness” Those who have the light should see that it is shining.\nThe entrance of God’s word gives light. Jesus is the Light of the World and calls disciples to be lights in the world.\nThat light shines out through lives that are changed by sin forgiven\, peace with God and joy in the Holy Spirit.\nThere is no greater light than found in God through Christ and no greater disappointment when it is obscured by the dirty glass of human weakness. Jesus said that the eye is the light of the body and we need to look upon the good\, pure and wholesome things of the Lord – to always look to Jesus. Have you checked your light today? Do friends and neighbours\, work-mates and all whose lives you affect see Christ shining in you? It is the light they look for and light they need.

SUMMARY:"Christ died for our sins" [I Corinthians 15:3]
DESCRIPTION:“Christ died for our sins”. This is the simple truth behind the gospel of Jesus. Unless we acknowledge our part in Christ’s death\, we cannot know the forgiveness His death can bring. It was His great love for us that fashioned the plan of salvation\, but it was because of our sin that He died. This is not to make us run away and hide. Rather it is to lead us to the foot of the cross and receive the forgiveness that Christ’s death offers. Because it is for my sin that Christ died\, then my forgiveness has been made possible. It may not seem fair\, it may not seem right\, but it is the only way for us to have peace with God and know Him for ourselves. Thank Him today and experience the forgiveness that Christ’s death brings\n.

SUMMARY:"I will lift up my eyes to the hills" [Psalm 121:1(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I will lift up my eyes to the hills”. There is something awe inspiring about a range of hills. They convey majesty\, might and permanency as they rise up from the plains. Their irregular shape suggests some Almighty hand placing them there\, never to be moved again. The sight of them reminded the Psalmist of the Lord and Creator. The feeling was that if He could place the hills so solidly upon a foundation\, He could ensure that the fate of those who trust Him would not slip.\nStanding dwarfed at the foot of them the Psalmist was made conscious of God’s keeping power as well as the refuge He was to all who trusted in Him: also of shade\, eternal preservation and safety. It does good to look up to the hills from time to time.

SUMMARY:"There is none to guide her" [ Isaiah 51:18]
DESCRIPTION:“There is none to guide her”. The prophet is making one of his calls to Jerusalem to waken from her drunken orgy. She is like a boat that has dragged her anchor in the sea of God’s fury. Like the world in the 21st century she does not know where she is going. The hands of help that are offered are pulling in different directions. There is none to guide her.\nMan is lost when he has no-one to guide him. It was many years later that Jesus of Nazareth walked by the lakeside and said “Follow me” to some fishermen. That simple call has been heard many times since. It may be heard in your life today if you will silence the cacophony of sound all around you. Heed it and you will have Someone to guide you. It is a loving\, dependable\, all-knowing Lord who will lead you safely to His eternal Kingdom.

SUMMARY:"all that is within me" [Psalm 103:1]
DESCRIPTION:“all that is within me”. The Psalmist told his soul to praise the Lord\, but more than that\, marshalled all his forces – “all that is within me”.\nThat would involve some drastic changes in most of us. Nothing within us is naturally inclined to do this. We need the cleansing from sin that the Lord gives and then we need the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Only by the Spirit can anyone call Jesus Lord.\nIf we can dedicate all we have to His praise\, what eternal blessing that will bring! What a peal of praise it will be!\nThe life will speak when all that is within me praises His Holy Name! Others will see and praise His Name.\nAs heaven is filled with His praises so should the company of the redeemed on earth be so\, too. There are no silent or dissenting voices in heaven: let there be none on earth.

SUMMARY:"Christ lives in me" [Galatians 2:20(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“Christ lives in me”. With these words the Apostle Paul describes the distinctive feature of true Christians in every generation the world over. They are not mere followers of Christ – Christ lives in them. For them\, living the Christian life is not so much finding where the Lord is leading\, but allowing Him to direct the life from within.\nThe Apostle could have said ‘Christ reigns in me’ for Jesus is Lord and on entry He must occupy the throne of the heart.\nIt is inconceivable that Jesus should be retained in an ancillary part of the life\, though some seem to be misled into thinking that way. If Christ is living in you\, brother\, sister\, He is reigning. Jesus Christ is Lord. And where He reigns blessings abound.

SUMMARY:"But Jonah ran away" [Jonah 1:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But Jonah ran away”. Not the best thing to do in hindsight\, but an instinctive reaction when called to go to Nineveh. Jonah could have thought of a number of places he would rather go to. Nineveh had a reputation and it wasn’t the sort of place to highlight wickedness. He would rather be all at sea.\nJonah is not alone in looking for a way out. Moses and Gideon are another two. But God chooses the weak\, fearful and lowly in order to show His mercy and power. Following Christ is not about an easy life but it is about being available for God to use. It may be at your place of work or amongst your family and friends\, but don’t run away. The One who calls\, will enable. Be available for God today so that others might come to know Christ as Saviour and Lord.

SUMMARY:"something should be given her to eat" [Mark 5:43(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“something should be given her to eat”. It needed this word from Jesus to remind the parents of their need to give food to their daughter whom He had raised to life. It is a timely reminder needed today.\nIn the excitement that follows a decision to follow Christ let us not neglect to provide care in the period that immediately follows. No new-born babe must be neglected while the parents celebrate.\nRemember that life does not end with the first step!\nBecoming a Christian marks the commencement of being a Christian. Trusting Christ is a constant exercise: it has a beginning but should never end. Those with a little experience need to give help and encouragement to the beginners. Is there someone to whom you should be giving something to eat today?

SUMMARY:"be imitators of God\, as beloved children" [Ephesians 5:1(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“be imitators of God\, as beloved children”. Children make good imitators because they watch. They stand and stare and take in everything. Then when you’re gone\, they put on a little show that takes you off to everyone’s amusement.\nThose striving after godliness should note the illustration. You will only become like the Lord as you walk with Him in your everyday life. You can only know His teaching when you read and listen to His Word. Your life will only begin to display His love and attraction when\, like Him\, the Holy Spirit dwells within you.\nThose who walk in the Spirit do not fulfil the lusts of the flesh – they are beloved children. Those who love Jesus keep His commandments – and the love of the Father is in them. Discipleship is practised by beloved children.

SUMMARY:"thy judgments are a great deep" [Psalm 36:6]
DESCRIPTION:“thy judgments are a great deep”. The Psalmist here is referring to all God’s ways and decisions particularly as they affect us. Knowing that His judgments are the product of an all-loving heavenly Father who cares for His children does not remove the difficulty we have in understanding or interpreting them.\nWhen we do not know why God is dealing with us as He is\, if we know it is the Lord we must exercise that gift of faith He gives us and trust in Him. His judgments are too deep for human understanding\, but the end of the matter will display a glory that we could never have imagined while climbing the path leading to that summit.\nNo matter how deep\, His love will keep us afloat: we shall not sink\, but see in full the salvation that is now only partly visible.

SUMMARY:"This fellow is one of them" [Mark 14:69(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“This fellow is one of them”. Peter missed his opportunity to witness! He could have stood out\, true to his word and been the only voice raised in support of Jesus. Indeed\, he could have died with His Lord.\nWe all miss these opportunities and try to excuse ourselves in numerous ways. “Are you a follower of Jesus?” “Do you believe the Bible?” and a host of other questions give us golden opportunities to witness. Do we pretend not to know when challenged about our faith? If so\, why is this? Is it not that we actually follow Jesus at a distance – a distance long enough to loosen that bond of love and loyalty and subject us to the fear of man? Walk closely to Jesus and nothing will break the bond of love that exists – you will be glad for all the world to know you are His disciple.
