SUMMARY:"where have you come from\, and where are you going? " [Genesis 16:8(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“where have you come from\, and where are you going? ” The two questions must be asked if you would accurately determine your present position. They relate to a spiritual journey\, as Hagar was to learn. It is an honest answer to these questions that will help you.\nThe past you cannot change. You may\, as Hagar\, be running away from an unhappy domestic situation\, or burdened with a child for whom you cannot properly care\, when the Lord meets you. The important thing is to know that God will help you go forward\, wherever it is in life’s way that He meets you. Once you get the direction right you’ll find many oases in life’s desert as though placed there by the Lord just for you. Life may be a desert\, but those bound for heaven know their time in it is limited.

SUMMARY:"in all points tempted like as we are" [Hebrews 4:15]
DESCRIPTION:“in all points tempted like as we are”. Because of this everybody and anybody can come to Jesus knowing He will understand their case.\nWe may come boldly to His throne in prayer and expect mercy and know forgiveness. But it does not end there.\nBecause He was tempted\, He can guide you safely through the minefields. Once sin and rebellion are dealt with\, He can guide and lead us in the way He would have us go.\nAvoiding the pitfall does not remove the need for diligence. It gives us a victory yet does not remove our need to trust.\nPlacing one’s hand in His is linking with One Who knows our every need right down to how we feel just now. And it ensures the meeting of that need in the way that is best for us and from an unlimited supply\n.

SUMMARY:"an honest and good heart" [Luke 8:15
DESCRIPTION:“an honest and good heart”. It is not where you live or work that determines your success\, it is what you are.\nAll too often we make our environment the excuse for our failure – as though what we really are will only reach its potential in different surroundings.\nI always remember working with a brother who changed a door from left to right hand opening with nothing more than a hammer and a screwdriver. He worked for many years as a missionary in the heart of Africa and had learned to work with whatever tools he had.\nYour prime need is not a set of new tools. It is a good and honest heart devoted to the Lord and dedicated to His service to be put to use right there where you are.

SUMMARY:"God be merciful unto us\, and bless us" [Psalm 67:1]
DESCRIPTION:That we don’t deserve it doesn’t matter; when mercy takes over blessings fall unimpeded. Call for mercy and He will bless you![/s \n“God be merciful unto us\, and bless us”. This prayer at the beginning of a delightful psalm acknowledges our need for mercy. We do not bring the good that we have done but our failings and sinfulness. It’s mercy that we need.\nThe Psalmist needed to trust in a promise for mercy; we may look back to a fulfilment. Mercy flows over from Calvary to every generation. Any needy soul that confronts the Lord cries out for mercy. It is judgment we deserve for our transgression: we call and we find Him ready to pardon\, heal and restore.\nAll God’s blessings to us are carried on the cart of mercy ayit]

SUMMARY:"he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord" [II Kings 22:2]
DESCRIPTION:“he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord”. King Hezekiah was succeeded by his son Manasseh who did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord. It is surprising because his father was a godly king. Manasseh was succeeded by Amon who also did that which was evil.\nThen Josiah came to the throne at eight years of age and he did that which was right. It is significant because you might expect him to be like his father. Many make their excuse for waywardness that it was inherited from their father.\nNot so. We each have a responsibility to live uprightly in the sight of God. He has a plan for each of us and equips us to fulfil His purpose. Every one of us is doing something: let it be what is right in the sight of the Lord. Check it out by reference to God’s Word.

SUMMARY:"What gives life is God's Spirit" [John 6:63(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“What gives life is God’s Spirit”. Not enthusiasm – the best of which may wane and disappear according to the strength of the opposition or feelings of the individual.\nNot learning – this might make a theologian but not a Spirit-filled Christian.\nNot science – continually being updated yet never touching the spiritual aspect.\nNot earning – as though any good that a man or woman may do can court God’s free gift.\nBut the Holy Spirit\, Third Person of the Trinity; promised by Jesus and given by God the Father on the Day of Pentecost. The essential Person of the Godhead in every new birth experience. Bountiful distributor of gifts as and to whom He will. It is to the Holy Spirit we look for new life.

SUMMARY:"you obeyed from the heart" [Romans 6:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you obeyed from the heart”. Servants must obey and it is very important whom they obey. Of second importance is whether they obey from the heart.\nIf someone else put you up to ‘being a Christian’ or if you were in any way coerced into it\, your service may not last for long and will certainly not be worth much.\nWhen a man or woman sees just what God in Christ did for them and the extent to which He has gone to make this revelation known to them\, the matter touches their heart.\nIt is from the very centre of their being that they are moved.\nThen if the love they feel for their Lord is translated into service\, you see obedience from the heart. Serving Him because you love Him is the best service of all.

SUMMARY:"Bring me another vessel" [Kings 4:6(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“Bring me another vessel”. When this widow went to the prophet for help he told her to gather empty vessels from all her neighbours\, go into the house\, close the door and pour oil from her one small jar into all the containers; then sell the oil and pay her debt.\nShe did this and the vessels were all filled and she said\, “bring me another vessel”. She wanted to continue.\nGod can and will fill empty vessels placed beneath His divine supply. Sometimes there is only one opportunity for such a miracle as this widow experienced. It was no use her opening the door and going seeking other empty vessels. It seems as though she had all that were available\, anyway.\nWe need to put ourselves where God’s blessing is flowing. Be ready for a supply that will meet your every need because God is ready to meet every one.

SUMMARY:"work for the food that lasts for eternal life" [John 6:27(GNB)
DESCRIPTION:“work for the food that lasts for eternal life”. When man fell in the Garden of Eden he was told by God that he would need to work hard if the ground was to produce anything. And much time must be spent in labour if we would take our proper place in society.\nBut Jesus brought a new dimension into the struggle to live. It was that there was an eternal reward for the sincere seeker and that some effort should be expended in food that lasts for eternal life.\nEccentrics may shut themselves away and go after nothing else\, mistakenly missing the very field of life where this service may be found. Most\, however\, don’t do anything about eternal reward.\nYou direct some of your energy towards a lasting return today.

SUMMARY:"Oh\, give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good! " [I Chronicles 16:34(RAV)
DESCRIPTION:“Oh\, give thanks to the Lord\, for he is good! “. You only really give thanks when you recognise the value of what you have received. This exhortation occurs at the end of a lengthy inventory of blessing in the Psalm that David delivered to Asaph and his choristers.\nTime only served to underline its truth. God’s covenant with His people has not changed\, though generation has succeeded generation. The Lord is ever greatly to be praised. He made and He unfolds all things.\nA true appreciation of His mighty Person must instil awe and worship into His subjects. Those who have placed the Almighty upon the throne of their hearts bring an offering of praise as they come before Him. Their message to those around them is ‘Why don’t you give thanks also: His mercy endures for ever’.

SUMMARY:"keep your gifts for yourself" [Daniel 5:17 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“keep your gifts for yourself”. Belshazzar wanted to influence what Daniel said. But Daniel was not open to a bribe. He knew that the gifts of man are nothing compared with being right before God. His obedience to God was not to be compromised by gifts.\nFor all who want to obey the Lord\, there will be times when the offers of the world must be rejected. The way of the world is compromise\, dialogue\, negotiation – anything to get around the truth. Belshazzar had set himself up against God. He had no regard for what was holy and now faced God’s judgment.\nDaniel’s response is in sharp contrast. He honoured God above the trappings of the world. The way of the Lord is at odds with the way of the world. Between the two there is no compromise. Daniel’s example is there for us to follow.

SUMMARY:"We'll go with you" [John 21:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“We’ll go with you”. When an opportunity to go arises it is not enough to ask where they are going and why\, but whether you should go.\nWas Peter needing a break from the excitement and trauma of recent days when he decided to go fishing? Was it right that he should return to the work from which God had called him?\nWhatever the answers\, Peter took others with him. They all fished in vain and Jesus appeared to them. Dejected and very dissatisfied\, Jesus transformed things and sent them forward with a renewed vision.\nTo go with others is not enough. Our comings and goings should be ordered by the Lord. And if and when we do have an experience of failure\, it is then the Lord is likely to come to our aid.

SUMMARY:"their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors" [Nehemiah 3:5(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“their nobles would not put their shoulders to the work under their supervisors”. Was it that they did not get on with their supervisors or did they baulk at putting their shoulders to anything\, these nobles of Tekoa? They were rebuilding a section of wall near the Fish Gate in the days of Nehemiah. They may have been of noble rank but they were ignoble in activity and earned themselves this rebuke in the list of labourers. They no doubt caused bad feeling and made extra work fall upon the ordinary workers.\nGod’s work needs men who will forget any self-appointed position of rank and authority and put their hand to the plough. These men soiled their good name in an effort to keep their tunics clean!\nLet us be among those who\, when the Lord gives us something to do\, do it with all our might.

SUMMARY:"As it turned out" [Ruth 2:3(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“As it turned out”. What seemed like a chance event was arranged by God Himself. Ruth’s servant heart was what God needed to fulfil His divine plan. As well as sharing the sadness of widow-hood\, she was willing to share in the burden that came with it.\nYet little did she know what God had in store. As she picked up the left-overs of barley\, she picked up a place in the family line into which Christ would come.\nHowever hard life may treat you\, the Lord can still use you. As with Ruth and with Mary\, the Lord looks for those with a servant heart. Nothing depends on chance when we walk with the Lord. Like Ruth\, it may only be in eternity that we become aware of just how God has been able to use us for His glory\, but the joy will be unsurpassed and last forever.

SUMMARY:"a foolish man\, which built his house upon the sand" [Matthew 7:26]
DESCRIPTION:“a foolish man\, which built his house upon the sand”. He rated appearance more important than durability. His house made a great impression while it was standing; but a fool of him when it collapsed. Your life may look good\, but how about the foundation? Skimp on the foundation to spend on the superstructure and lose it all when the flood comes.\nThere is no choice of foundation if you are to endure to the end and on into eternity. No other foundation can be laid than that which is laid. Jesus is the foundation\, the chief cornerstone in the church of the living God.\nWe need to stand upon Him – His word and His promises. We need to know His presence and peace. Then when the storms of life rage our testing will stand and we shall safely negotiate the sea of life and reach heaven’s shore.

SUMMARY:"Serve the Lord with gladness" [Psalm 100:2]
DESCRIPTION:“Serve the Lord with gladness”. What a problem ‘miserable Christians’ are: there must be some doubt whether they really are Christians if they are miserable. Some people like this have gained Christians a reputation for being miserable.\nBut the true servants of the Lord are glad to be serving Him. Grateful for the privilege\, happy in their employment\, praising the Lord for all His goodness.\nPersecution may be unpleasant\, but it makes them sing – as did Paul and Silas in the Philippian jail. The burdens they are asked to carry may be great\, but the deep peace they have in Jesus makes them anything but miserable.\nSo begone unbelief\, fear\, depression\, and all melancholy.\nOurs shall be a service of gladness for the Lord Who has done so much for us.

DESCRIPTION:“What God promised our ancestors he has fulfilled for us”. Jesus said\, ‘One man sows and another reaps’.\nToday we may be reaping the ‘sowing’ of our forefathers.\nThis applies to prayer on our behalf as well as to projects started in faith by those who went before us.\nMany reading these lines will know that their faith now is an answer to the prayer of someone in days gone by.\nSo\, we all have opportunity to fill out God’s promises. Our small part may add to the completeness of the whole.\nAnd if it is that we are benefitting from others’ earlier toil\, let us see to it that besides reaping we are sowing seed which someone else may be raised up to reap.

SUMMARY:"the Lord\, the God of Israel\, who has sent you today to meet me" [I Samuel 25:32(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the Lord\, the God of Israel\, who has sent you today to meet me”. David found the blessing it is to meet someone like Abigail. Incensed at Nabal’s refusal to offer hospitality after his men had protected his sheep shearers\, he was about to come against him in battle when he was met by Abigail. Her placating words as she brought David and his men bread and wine\, dressed lamb\, corn\, raisins and cakes of figs\, make welcome reading in the dust of battle found in these Old Testament chapters.\nDavid recognised that it was the Lord who had sent her across his path and he thanked the Lord for this blessing.\nLife still has many ugly scenes and awkward people\, but God has His charming personalities who recognise their calling to be peacemakers and prevent further bloodshed. Be glad when you meet such today.

DESCRIPTION:“sitting … dressed and in his right mind”. The touch of Jesus affects the whole of life. The demons had stripped this man of all respect\, driven him mad and left him running wild. Any control or restraint was broken and he was alone in the world. The god of this world is still doing this today\, leaving men and women\, young and old with no sense of respect for self or others and frantically breaking any last moral restraint. The only hope for mankind is in Christ.\nHe restores dignity and self worth. He calms the troubled soul and brings peace with God. He heals broken hearts and sets free those who are bound. If you have not known the touch of Jesus in your life\, call out to Him today. If you have\, then lead someone else to meet Him and let them know His healing power.

SUMMARY:"there shall be no more curse" [Revelation 22:3]
DESCRIPTION:“there shall be no more curse”. A great curse fell upon the human race when the serpent caused Adam to sin. Now the best of us are hindered from doing all that we want to do\, while the worst are bound by sin and rebellion and live in a squalor of ungodliness. There is toil and strife: we labour and are spent out. Justice can be hard to find; hatred and greed seem to go unchecked in so many places. Disease attacks the strongest of us and plans made may disappear overnight. We go forward but with a bias to do evil.\nThank God it is not for ever. The nations of them that are saved shall walk in the New Jerusalem\, the Bride of Christ – no more sorrow\, night or pain and no more curse.\nWe shall expand through the wideness of God’s mercy into a glorious eternity of joy with our Saviour.

SUMMARY:"called in question for today's uproar" [Acts 19:40(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“called in question for today’s uproar”. The town clerk of Ephesus was most anxious that this assembly that got out of hand should disperse without further violence. The mob chanted vociferously\, ‘Great is Diana of the Ephesians’ without really knowing why.\nWe can see here a picture of a greater uproar which has more far-reaching consequences. It is the insurrection of sinful man against the pleadings of the Lord to turn from his sinful ways. Many have been persuaded to do this just as Paul had some success among the Ephesians. But still the majority live their lives on a ‘crash-course’. We do well to remember that we will all be called in question for our behaviour today\, whatever day it is. It is in our hands to see that it is not uproar but acquiescence to God’s revealed will that we will follow.

SUMMARY:"So they all praised the Lord" [I Chronicles 29:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“So they all praised the Lord”. Did you hear the story about the man who shouted ‘Praise the Lord’ in a church where everyone always sat quietly? A steward tapped his arm and whispered\, ‘We don’t do that here\, Sir’!\nBut they did it in David’s day – every one of them. Of course\, they had 150 published psalms\, and others beside and their spiritual leader was known to dance before the Lord with all his might. He also advocated clapping hands and using all kinds of musical instruments in worship.\nAnd when he said to the assembly\, ‘Praise the Lord your God’ that’s what they all did. It must have been an uplifting experience to have been among their number. But ‘praise the Lord’ folk like this are still around. So praise the Lord and be counted as one of them.

SUMMARY:If a man love me\, he will keep my words" [John 14:23]
DESCRIPTION:“If a man love me\, he will keep my words”. His words to us are not intermittent\, not just now and then. The disciple must be in continual contact with the Lord. He should be aware of the distractions that can break this line of communication.\nPersonal and unforgiven sin can also distort the messages. In fact\, the disciple needs to take time every day to find what God would say to him or her. The reading of His Word\, prayer and waiting upon Him are key factors in receiving His word.\nSeeking to do His will\, a conscience that is clear of offence\, delight at whatever the Lord is telling us to do are natural characteristics of all who love the Lord.\nTrue love\, divine love\, the love of a forgiven sinner for his Saviour are bonds of obedience not to be broken.

SUMMARY:"Greet Priscilla" [II Timothy 4:19(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Greet Priscilla”. This is the lady who married Aquila and teamed up with him in the work of the Gospel. It is unusual for the wife to be mentioned first\, which suggests she may have been the more energetic and dominant of the two.\nBut the husband and wife partnership was a blessing to Paul as it was to Apollos and countless others. Both she and her husband were students of the Word and ministered in the Spirit to those younger in faith.\nThey knew what it was to uproot from their home and to be refugees but wherever they went it was the ministry to those in need that took first place. She was the sort of lady that was a blessing to be with. God give us more people like Priscilla to whom you feel you want to say\, ‘Thank you’.

SUMMARY:"Put on the whole armour of God" [Ephesians 6:11]
DESCRIPTION:“Put on the whole armour of God”. It stands to reason that a wily enemy is ever on the lookout for cracks in his adversary’s armour. And when he finds one or more pieces of protective armour missing completely\, he has an open entry through which to attack.\nAs with all protection\, the armour of God is of no use unless worn. And it is designed to be always in place.\nFamiliarity with the promises of the Word of God\, knowledge in the value of prayer\, an appreciation of the power of the Holy Spirit are merely academic facts unless applied to your own case.\nDon’t leave the armour of God hanging on the wall in church. It might look impressive there but it will only be effective if worn by you today.

SUMMARY:"break up your unploughed ground" [Hosea 10:12(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“break up your unploughed ground”. We all have areas of our lives that need to be broken up – areas of stubborn resistance to the work of the Holy Spirit; habits and attitudes that we are content to leave under the influence of the old nature. Listen to what God says:\nUnploughed ground becomes waste. It no longer produces fruit but gives room for weeds and thistles to grow. The danger is that weeds can spread into other areas and begin to pollute the good ground. Areas of our lives that are not given over to the Holy Spirit can affect the whole being and prevent us from enjoying the fullness of life in the Spirit.\nJust as the Lord longed to give the Israelites the very best\, so He wants the best for His people today. Give the Spirit access to those unploughed areas of your life that righteousness might grow.

SUMMARY:"he took the blind man by the hand\, and led him out of the town" [Mark 8:23]
DESCRIPTION:“he took the blind man by the hand\, and led him out of the town”. Jesus sometimes leads the blind to one side before He can minister to them. All true followers of Jesus need to know His leading and to move into a place where\, away from life’s distractions\, He can speak His healing words to their soul.\nWhen Jesus told His disciples to come apart and rest awhile it was for a holiday: it was drawing fellowship and strength from His presence away from the milling crowd.\nDon’t expect God to do running repairs when it is the miracle of a renewal you need! Popularity and current trends of opinion can stop God from having His way. When Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town\, He anointed his eyes and began the healing that gave Him full sight. He would do the same in a spiritual sense for all of us.

SUMMARY:"a way in the wilderness\, and rivers in the desert" [Isaiah 43:19]
DESCRIPTION:“a way in the wilderness\, and rivers in the desert”. Such is the civil engineering project God will undertake for His people. It is a blessing promised to any experiencing the dryness of a wilderness and desert experience just now.\nWe are not told whether it will be a way out of the wilderness or a path across it: both are true. The river that He creates will certainly run to the ocean.\nIn fact\, the way He makes through the wilderness makes the journey to be pleasant and enjoyable just as the river in the desert transforms the sandy waste into verdant pasture.\nGod’s promise makes no wilderness impossible and no desert impassable.

SUMMARY:"a new and living way" [Hebrews 10:20]
DESCRIPTION:“a new and living way”. New religions will for ever be springing up\, yet sooner or later they will all suffer from stagnation and become monuments.\nIt is nearly two thousand years now since the birth of the Early Christian Church. Today it is the strongest it has ever been and for one very good reason. Jesus is risen from the dead and leading His followers in a living way to eternal life.\nThe old gospel comes with new appeal because it is alive.\nFollow the One Who said\, ‘I am the Way’ and you will have life.\nNot a forlorn hope for something better\, but a new birth into a new life is what Jesus offers.\nIt is not a new idea or even a good idea you need. It’s new life in the living Lord Jesus. That’s the way forward.

SUMMARY:"Woman\, you have great faith" [Matthew 15:28(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Woman\, you have great faith”. Faith that receives such commendation from the lips of Jesus deserves our examination.\n 1. She believed that the Lord would help her. This was the starting point. More than feeling sure He would\, we\n might say ‘she knew He would’.\n 2. She acted upon her faith\, going to Jesus and crying out for mercy. If she had not acted we should never have\n known\, indeed\, it would not have been faith at all.\n 3. The apparent silent rebuff from Jesus did not put her off\, and His verbal rebuke only made her press her case more. \nAll great faith must have these characteristics – belief – action – and determination to succeed.
