SUMMARY:"called in question for today's uproar" [Acts 19:40(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“called in question for today’s uproar”. The town clerk of Ephesus was most anxious that this assembly that got out of hand should disperse without further violence. The mob chanted vociferously\, ‘Great is Diana of the Ephesians’ without really knowing why.\nWe can see here a picture of a greater uproar which has more far-reaching consequences. It is the insurrection of sinful man against the pleadings of the Lord to turn from his sinful ways. Many have been persuaded to do this just as Paul had some success among the Ephesians. But still the majority live their lives on a ‘crash-course’. We do well to remember that we will all be called in question for our behaviour today\, whatever day it is. It is in our hands to see that it is not uproar but acquiescence to God’s revealed will that we will follow.

SUMMARY:"So they all praised the Lord" [I Chronicles 29:20(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“So they all praised the Lord”. Did you hear the story about the man who shouted ‘Praise the Lord’ in a church where everyone always sat quietly? A steward tapped his arm and whispered\, ‘We don’t do that here\, Sir’!\nBut they did it in David’s day – every one of them. Of course\, they had 150 published psalms\, and others beside and their spiritual leader was known to dance before the Lord with all his might. He also advocated clapping hands and using all kinds of musical instruments in worship.\nAnd when he said to the assembly\, ‘Praise the Lord your God’ that’s what they all did. It must have been an uplifting experience to have been among their number. But ‘praise the Lord’ folk like this are still around. So praise the Lord and be counted as one of them.

SUMMARY:If a man love me\, he will keep my words" [John 14:23]
DESCRIPTION:“If a man love me\, he will keep my words”. His words to us are not intermittent\, not just now and then. The disciple must be in continual contact with the Lord. He should be aware of the distractions that can break this line of communication.\nPersonal and unforgiven sin can also distort the messages. In fact\, the disciple needs to take time every day to find what God would say to him or her. The reading of His Word\, prayer and waiting upon Him are key factors in receiving His word.\nSeeking to do His will\, a conscience that is clear of offence\, delight at whatever the Lord is telling us to do are natural characteristics of all who love the Lord.\nTrue love\, divine love\, the love of a forgiven sinner for his Saviour are bonds of obedience not to be broken.

SUMMARY:"Greet Priscilla" [II Timothy 4:19(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Greet Priscilla”. This is the lady who married Aquila and teamed up with him in the work of the Gospel. It is unusual for the wife to be mentioned first\, which suggests she may have been the more energetic and dominant of the two.\nBut the husband and wife partnership was a blessing to Paul as it was to Apollos and countless others. Both she and her husband were students of the Word and ministered in the Spirit to those younger in faith.\nThey knew what it was to uproot from their home and to be refugees but wherever they went it was the ministry to those in need that took first place. She was the sort of lady that was a blessing to be with. God give us more people like Priscilla to whom you feel you want to say\, ‘Thank you’.

SUMMARY:"Put on the whole armour of God" [Ephesians 6:11]
DESCRIPTION:“Put on the whole armour of God”. It stands to reason that a wily enemy is ever on the lookout for cracks in his adversary’s armour. And when he finds one or more pieces of protective armour missing completely\, he has an open entry through which to attack.\nAs with all protection\, the armour of God is of no use unless worn. And it is designed to be always in place.\nFamiliarity with the promises of the Word of God\, knowledge in the value of prayer\, an appreciation of the power of the Holy Spirit are merely academic facts unless applied to your own case.\nDon’t leave the armour of God hanging on the wall in church. It might look impressive there but it will only be effective if worn by you today.

SUMMARY:"break up your unploughed ground" [Hosea 10:12(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“break up your unploughed ground”. We all have areas of our lives that need to be broken up – areas of stubborn resistance to the work of the Holy Spirit; habits and attitudes that we are content to leave under the influence of the old nature. Listen to what God says:\nUnploughed ground becomes waste. It no longer produces fruit but gives room for weeds and thistles to grow. The danger is that weeds can spread into other areas and begin to pollute the good ground. Areas of our lives that are not given over to the Holy Spirit can affect the whole being and prevent us from enjoying the fullness of life in the Spirit.\nJust as the Lord longed to give the Israelites the very best\, so He wants the best for His people today. Give the Spirit access to those unploughed areas of your life that righteousness might grow.

SUMMARY:"he took the blind man by the hand\, and led him out of the town" [Mark 8:23]
DESCRIPTION:“he took the blind man by the hand\, and led him out of the town”. Jesus sometimes leads the blind to one side before He can minister to them. All true followers of Jesus need to know His leading and to move into a place where\, away from life’s distractions\, He can speak His healing words to their soul.\nWhen Jesus told His disciples to come apart and rest awhile it was for a holiday: it was drawing fellowship and strength from His presence away from the milling crowd.\nDon’t expect God to do running repairs when it is the miracle of a renewal you need! Popularity and current trends of opinion can stop God from having His way. When Jesus took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town\, He anointed his eyes and began the healing that gave Him full sight. He would do the same in a spiritual sense for all of us.

SUMMARY:"a way in the wilderness\, and rivers in the desert" [Isaiah 43:19]
DESCRIPTION:“a way in the wilderness\, and rivers in the desert”. Such is the civil engineering project God will undertake for His people. It is a blessing promised to any experiencing the dryness of a wilderness and desert experience just now.\nWe are not told whether it will be a way out of the wilderness or a path across it: both are true. The river that He creates will certainly run to the ocean.\nIn fact\, the way He makes through the wilderness makes the journey to be pleasant and enjoyable just as the river in the desert transforms the sandy waste into verdant pasture.\nGod’s promise makes no wilderness impossible and no desert impassable.

SUMMARY:"a new and living way" [Hebrews 10:20]
DESCRIPTION:“a new and living way”. New religions will for ever be springing up\, yet sooner or later they will all suffer from stagnation and become monuments.\nIt is nearly two thousand years now since the birth of the Early Christian Church. Today it is the strongest it has ever been and for one very good reason. Jesus is risen from the dead and leading His followers in a living way to eternal life.\nThe old gospel comes with new appeal because it is alive.\nFollow the One Who said\, ‘I am the Way’ and you will have life.\nNot a forlorn hope for something better\, but a new birth into a new life is what Jesus offers.\nIt is not a new idea or even a good idea you need. It’s new life in the living Lord Jesus. That’s the way forward.

SUMMARY:"Woman\, you have great faith" [Matthew 15:28(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Woman\, you have great faith”. Faith that receives such commendation from the lips of Jesus deserves our examination.\n 1. She believed that the Lord would help her. This was the starting point. More than feeling sure He would\, we\n might say ‘she knew He would’.\n 2. She acted upon her faith\, going to Jesus and crying out for mercy. If she had not acted we should never have\n known\, indeed\, it would not have been faith at all.\n 3. The apparent silent rebuff from Jesus did not put her off\, and His verbal rebuke only made her press her case more. \nAll great faith must have these characteristics – belief – action – and determination to succeed.

SUMMARY:"the scarlet cord in the window" [Joshua 2:21(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the scarlet cord in the window”. No special merit in the cord\, though it was red in colour\, strong in texture and used to lower the two spies from her window on the walls of Jericho.\nIt marked Rahab’s covenant with the spies and her house did not perish when Jericho was taken.\nIt is part of a red line that runs through the Bible from Eden\, when an animal was slain to provide coverings of skin for Adam and Eve\, via Abel who brought an acceptable animal sacrifice to God\, Abraham who was ready to sacrifice his son\, the Israelites who painted blood on the doorposts and lintels of their houses\, numerous prescribed sacrifices in the Mosaic law\, to Jesus whose blood was shed in His atoning sacrifice – and to all who today claim forgiveness through the blood of Christ.

SUMMARY:"teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine" [Titus 2:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine”. There must be more to the Christian experience than being happy – more than being lost in wonder\, love and praise and no longer in touch with the reality of life.\nJoy accompanies salvation and salvation is received by faith often without knowing very much about the foundations of that faith. And so teaching is needed and learning essential.\nThe child playing with his model railway engine must learn that it needs lines to run on and to be placed on those lines. They need to meet up\, too\, or it will be off the end of them.\nThe Bible must be our text book and the Holy Spirit our teacher. We need to understand what we read and to be sure it is the mind of God and not the whim of man that directs our thinking.

SUMMARY:"I answered you in the secret place of thunder" [Psalm 81:7 (RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I answered you in the secret place of thunder”. Thunder is at the same time both majestic and mysterious. It is frightening yet demands our attention. To the soul that is sensitive to the voice of God in the world of nature it speaks of His invisible might and power.\nWe cannot pin-point its location and to this extent it is a secret place\, though we are left in no doubt when thunder is there. On a number of occasions when God spoke there were those who only said ‘it thundered’\, while those in tune heard God’s voice speaking. The whole revelation of God remains unintelligible to most – like the writing on Belshazzar’s wall. But those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High hear their Master’s voice while others pass it off as thunder.

SUMMARY:"So you also must be ready" [Matthew 24:44(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“So you also must be ready”. A day is coming when Jesus will return. Repeatedly we read of this in the New Testament. Jesus said He was coming back and the disciples preached this truth. After two thousand years it is a promise nearer fulfilment than ever. No one knows when it will be and therefore all who love the Lord need to be ready. Readiness is seen in a number of ways.\n Not pre-occupied with unnecessary hindrances.\n Not engaging in shameful practices.\n Not sleeping spiritually.\n Shining brightly in the darkness around you.\n Resisting the attractions and temptations of the Evil One.\n Bearing a good and attractive testimony.\nJoin the waiting and watching ones – be also ready.

SUMMARY:"as the clay is in the potter's hand" [Jeremiah 18:6]
DESCRIPTION:“as the clay is in the potter’s hand”. The lump of clay does not resist the potter’s work upon it. If it could resist the vessel might never be made.\nThe potter has complete control. Even when an attempt is thwarted for one reason and another\, the potter will start again.\nSo the Lord will succeed with all who submit to Him. Those who resist and struggle not only lose the contest\, they fail to achieve the perfection that God would give as a master craftsman.\nComplete trust enables the Lord to work unhindered and to adopt plans and follow paths that we cannot understand.\nCommit your life to the Lord and be sure that He who does all things well will make you to be to His eternal glory in His kingdom.

SUMMARY:"the disciples came together to break bread" [Acts 20:7(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the disciples came together to break bread”. It was a time of spiritual refreshment and worship as well as fellowship with one another. Persecution and opposition ensured they looked forward to this occasion.\nThe disciples would draw great strength from this act of obedience and communication: they would also eagerly anticipate the return of the Lord Jesus whose presence was so real to them. They made it a time of ministry\, too – when the Lord could speak to them through His Word. This was in addition to the gifts of the Spirit through which the Body of Christ was edified.\nThe true church\, a real yet invisible body of believers\, has never lost the blessings of this meeting around the Lord’s Table. I trust you’re one who enjoys it still.

SUMMARY:"and their minds (are) closed so they cannot understand" [Isaiah 44:18(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“and their minds (are) closed so they cannot understand”. Whoever will form a balanced opinion must see what God’s Word says and must take God into the equation.\nThe prophet was writing about people who were religious but whose religion was nonsensical. They cut down wood – with one piece light a fire and bake bread on it and with another they make an image that they worship as God.\nWe would not do that. Instead man ignores the heavens that declare God’s glory\, he silences his conscience which ought to be an accurate inner indicator and the modern generation throws overboard all and anything that they think restricts. But there are those who open mind and heart to the sunshine of God’s love\, who move into the light of His Word and who bear the fruit of the Spirit. This is the class to be among today.

SUMMARY:"Lord\, you know all things; you know that I love you" [John 21:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Lord\, you know all things; you know that I love you”. Peter’s third answer was to the effect that Jesus already knew the answer: he did love Jesus.\nIt was not that Jesus should know but that Peter should know\, that the question was asked three times. What the Lord had done and was yet to do for Peter was to establish a bond of love that would never be broken. If Peter did not love the Lord who loved him\, his calling would not be fulfilled. His faith must be bolstered or under girded by love.\nIt is the same with us. It is not that we agree with or believe in this or that: not that we leave this or take on the other\, but that we love Jesus\, that is of utmost importance. We love Him because He first loved us\, must be of paramount importance.

SUMMARY:"the clay was marred in his hands" [Jeremiah 18:4(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“the clay was marred in his hands”. Marred or imperfect clay did not matter when it was still in the hands of the potter. The prophet described the Master Potter remaking the vessel\, not doing a repair.\nGod does not patch up those who put themselves in His hand\, He makes them anew. Anyone in Christ is a new creation\, old things are gone and all things are made new. The reasons why lives get marred are varied. What matters is being in the Lord’s hand.\nWe are all spotted. None is perfect. The Word of God tells us we were born in sin: sin is inherited from the Fall. The Lord is not hampered by the extent of the damage: His hands re-form human clay into new spiritual lives.\nCall on the Divine Potter to work on your life today.

He journeyed to Damascus to visit the king of Assyria whose help he had sought in resisting armed incursions from the king of Israel and from the Syrians. While in Damascus he saw an altar which he liked so much that he sent the pattern of it back to Urijah the priest in Jerusalem and told him to get on and make a copy. This he did and it was waiting for Ahaz on his return. Ahaz then brought the brazen altar from the Temple and put it alongside his new altar (called the great altar) and used both for sacrifices to Jehovah.\nAny wonder the Bible says\, ‘He did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord’? The same is true today of any who attempt to mix the worship of the Lord with other religions – even the religion of materialism.

SUMMARY:"The Prince of Peace" [Isaiah 9:6]
DESCRIPTION:“The Prince of Peace”. This name is experienced when you receive the forgiveness of sin and peace with God that He offers. \nThe heathen rage and the nations engage in war as the Psalmist said. National peace is an illusive goal. \nTo understand this title we must look at the conflict between good and evil described in the Word of God. \nThroughout the Bible we see the Devil and his evil minions seeking to destroy mankind. This attack peaked when the Devil sought to prevent Jesus from giving His life to save us. In all he failed and the peace of God beyond understanding fills the hearts of those whose trust is in the Saviour. In the last days the Prince of Peace will establish His kingdom of peace in the new heaven and earth.

SUMMARY:"until" [Matthew 24:38]
DESCRIPTION:“until”. Jesus used this little word with great effect. In the days of Noah they were eating and drinking\, marrying and giving in marriage UNTIL the day Noah entered the ark. \nJesus told us in His parable that God allows wheat and tares (good and evil) to grow together UNTIL harvest. \nThe Psalmist realised that the prosperity of evil men was only UNTIL God decided their end should come. \nYou can apply it in so many ways: life in whatever form continues as God permits. The burden He asks you to bear is only for as long as He knows it is needful for you. Weeping will only last until the dawning of His morning. \nSometimes the sinner’s rope is so long and slack that he does not think it is there. But what he calls “liberty” is only until God calls him in for account.

SUMMARY:"the children of Israel … had feared other gods" [II Kings 17:7]
DESCRIPTION:“the children of Israel … had feared other gods“. They could only do this because they stopped fearing or worshipping the Lord Jehovah. It happened after a number of evil kings had ruled in Israel and the nation was carried captive into Assyria. \nYou cannot worship other gods unless you turn away from the Lord and you cannot worship the Lord and other gods at the same time. It is ‘God or Mammon’ not ‘God and Mammon’! Many try and make it the latter. In fact\, the Israelites tried to worship the other gods secretly (see verse 9)\, as though Jehovah would not notice! \nWhere Jesus is Lord there is room for no other: when Jesus is Lord there is no desire for another. Once you turn from the Lord the options are many but the outcome the same – captivity.\n

SUMMARY:"Be not afraid of their faces" [Jeremiah 1:8]
DESCRIPTION:“Be not afraid of their faces”. The Lord repeated these words to Jeremiah at the outset of his ministry and He would repeat them to every disciple who goes forward to serve the Lord. A look at the faces of his hearers can frighten the most eloquent preacher. The servants of the Lord must draw their inspiration to go forth from the Lord: they must look to His face. \nUnbelief is written on the face of many – cold\, unmoving unbelief. On others there is scorn and ridicule written on the face. Looking at them can make you afraid. \nSome set their face against the gospel – they are opposed to it and to all it proclaims. \nDon’t be afraid of any of them: they threaten but cannot put a finger on any child of God unless He allows them.\n

SUMMARY:"Are you greater than our father Jacob … ? " [John 4:12(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Are you greater than our father Jacob … ? “. Yes\, Jesus is greater than all who have gone before. Pile the achievements from the great ones of history and you have not begun to equal what the Lord has done. \nGreater because no one else left heaven to come to earth and be our Saviour. \nGreater because no one else could atone for the sins of the world. Salvation is to be found in none other. \nGreater because He is seated at the right hand of the Father\, where He intercedes for His children and promises one day to return. This Samaritan woman knew He was greater because He sought her out as she came to draw water\, engaged her in conversation and offered her the water of life. Jacob may have dug the well but he could not give the satisfying water Jesus offered.\n

SUMMARY:"Behold\, I will do a new thing\, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? " [Isaiah 43:19(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Behold\, I will do a new thing\, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? “. God loves to do new things in the lives of His people. Sometimes we get confused and disappointed because we do not appreciate God’s time schedule. \nHe may alert us to what is going to happen sometime ahead. This enables us to get ready: also to anticipate the event with joy as any child does its birthday\, for example. \nAt other times the Lord works much more slowly than we thought – allowing things to unfold naturally instead of miraculously. But you can enjoy a leisurely sail just as much as a trip in a speed boat. \nWhat you can be sure of is that God will do something – and it can be revealed to you now – and you will know it to be real!\n

SUMMARY:"and they received the Holy Spirit" [Acts 8:17(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“and they received the Holy Spirit”. It was not enough for the new believers in Samaria to receive the Word of God brought to them by Philip the Evangelist. Not enough for them to feel and be happy. All should be happy when they experience sin forgiven and peace with God. \nThey needed the Holy Spirit to enable them to live out the faith they had received. Indeed\, they needed Christ to live in them and be seen by others. Christ is exalted to the Father’s right hand and promised that the Holy Spirit would administer the blessing to His followers. \nMore than mental assent and faith in the gospel they needed to receive the Holy Spirit to live out the gospel. Thank God for more mature believers who prayed for them to receive the Spirit!\n

SUMMARY:"my people have forgotten me" [Jeremiah 18:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“my people have forgotten me”. The People of Israel repeatedly turned away from the Lord. The same easily happens when God blesses and it may easily happen to us. As we read elsewhere “Let him that stands take heed\, lest he fall!” \nGod’s blessings can make us complacent so we forsake the worship and service of the Lord. If God gave us all we asked\, how many of us would sit back and do nothing\, however good our resolve to do otherwise at the time. \nThe trials that the people of the Lord had to face were the best medicine for them. So often\, we call upon God when we are in need and then find no need to pray when the emergency is past. If we know the danger we may avoid the pitfall. See how Israel forsook God and resolve that by God’s grace you and your house will serve the Lord.\n

SUMMARY:"they had argued about who was the greatest" [Mark 9:34(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“they had argued about who was the greatest”. It was an argument among themselves – Jesus had to ask His disciples what it was they were arguing about. We might easily be disappointed with them for indulging in such petty behaviour – as though to be among the chosen twelve was not enough\, each wanted to be the greatest. \nWanting to be the greatest is a sentiment that is always with us. Jesus said if anyone wants to be first he should become the last and servant of all. Remember that the greatest of all was despised and rejected of men\, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. The way to glory is the way of the cross. Carry your cross if you would wear the victor’s crown. Those who serve the Lord should have no need to jostle for position. Meet the Suffering Servant\, Jesus and worship at His feet.

SUMMARY:"Come and hear" [Psalm 66:16]
DESCRIPTION:“Come and hear”. God expects some movement on the part of the sinner. The redeemed ones may set out their case attractively but it is of no use if folk do not come. \nThe call of the gospel message is centred around this activity. Whether far away or near\, the direction is the same – coming to Christ. Not religion or philosophy or the latest thing\, but coming to Jesus. \nThen we need to hear. It is a prayer for understanding that we need. Naturally dull of hearing the case calls for inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Jesus described some in His day who had ears but heard not. We must not be like them. The testimony of my brother can be a blessing and help to me. My testimony should call others to come to the Lord and hear.\n
