And so teaching is needed and learning essential.\nThe child playing with his model railway engine must learn that it needs lines to run on and to be placed on those lines. They need to meet up\, too\, or it will be off the end of them.\nThe Bible must be our text book and the Holy Spirit our teacher. We need to understand what we read and to be sure it is the mind of God and not the whim of man that directs our thinking.

DESCRIPTION:“I answered you in the secret place of thunder”.  Thunder is at the same time both majestic and mysterious. It is frightening yet demands our attention. To the soul that is sensitive to the voice of God in the world of nature it speaks of His invisible might and power.\nWe cannot pin-point its location and to this extent it is a secret place\, though we are left in no doubt when thunder is there. On a number of occasions when God spoke there were those who only said ‘it thundered’\, while those in tune heard God’s voice speaking.  The whole revelation of God remains unintelligible to most – like the writing on Belshazzar’s wall. But those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High hear their Master’s voice while others pass it off as thunder.

Whoever will form a balanced opinion must see what God’s Word says and must take God into the equation.\nThe prophet was writing about people who were religious but whose religion was nonsensical. They cut down wood – with one piece light a fire and bake bread on it and with another they make an image that they worship as God.\nWe would not do that. Instead man ignores the heavens that declare God’s glory\, he silences his conscience which ought to be an accurate inner indicator and the modern generation throws overboard all and anything that they think restricts. But there are those who open mind and heart to the sunshine of God’s love\, who move into the light of His Word and who bear the fruit of the Spirit. This is the class to be among today.

What the Lord had done and was yet to do for Peter was to establish a bond of love that would never be broken. If Peter did not love the Lord who loved him\, his calling would not be fulfilled. His faith must be bolstered or under girded by love.\nIt is the same with us. It is not that we agree with or believe in this or that: not that we leave this or take on the other\, but that we love Jesus\, that is of utmost importance. We love Him because He first loved us\, must be of paramount importance.

DESCRIPTION:“king Ahaz … saw an altar that was at Damascus”.  He journeyed to Damascus to visit the king of Assyria whose help he had sought in resisting armed incursions from the king of Israel and from the Syrians. While in Damascus he saw an altar which he liked so much that he sent the pattern of it back to Urijah the priest in Jerusalem and told him to get on and make a copy. This he did and it was waiting for Ahaz on his return. Ahaz then brought the brazen altar from the Temple and put it alongside his new altar (called the great altar) and used both for sacrifices to Jehovah.\nAny wonder the Bible says\, ‘He did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord’? The same is true today of any who attempt to mix the worship of the Lord with other religions – even the religion of materialism.

It is ‘God or Mammon’ not ‘God and Mammon’! Many try and make it the latter. In fact\, the Israelites tried to worship the other gods secretly (see verse 9)\, as though Jehovah would not notice! \nWhere Jesus is Lord there is room for no other: when Jesus is Lord there is no desire for another. Once you turn from the Lord the options are many but the outcome the same – captivity.\n

Thank God for more mature believers who prayed for them to receive the Spirit!\n

See how Israel forsook God and resolve that by God’s grace you and your house will serve the Lord.\n

We might easily be disappointed with them for indulging in such petty behaviour – as though to be among the chosen twelve was not enough\, each wanted to be the greatest. \nWanting to be the greatest is a sentiment that is always with us. Jesus said if anyone wants to be first he should become the last and servant of all. Remember that the greatest of all was despised and rejected of men\, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. The way to glory is the way of the cross. Carry your cross if you would wear the victor’s crown. Those who serve the Lord should have no need to jostle for position. Meet the Suffering Servant\, Jesus and worship at His feet.

DESCRIPTION:<b>“Come and hear”.</b>  God expects some movement on the part of the sinner. The redeemed ones may set out their case attractively but it is of no use if folk do not come. \nThe call of the gospel message is centred around this activity. Whether far away or near\, the direction is the same – coming to Christ. Not religion or philosophy or the latest thing\, but coming to Jesus. \nThen we need to hear. It is a prayer for understanding that we need. Naturally dull of hearing the case calls for inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  Jesus described some in His day who had ears but heard not. We must not be like them. The testimony of my brother can be a blessing and help to me. My testimony should call others to come to the Lord and hear.\n

Even in the most saintly the old nature rears its ugly head from time to time. What he does say is that we should not speak to others about it.  Some who find fault find nothing else. They knock down but never build up. There are enough in the demolition business\, so you be among those who speak evil of no man. \nJust stay quiet – God will judge.

Past generations may have collected dead wood\, but in trying to be rid of it\, to say that the Christian may do whatever is standard behaviour in the world\, is not right. \nHoliness is not like an adhesive label. It is a process that begins when the heart is cleansed and something that develops as one walks with the Lord. The prophet described this name as ‘engraved upon’ the bells of the horses. \n‘Be holy’ is an injunction that demands constant attention; getting alongside those in need in the world\, yet keeping oneself unspotted from the world. \nThere will be no engraving the name at heaven’s gate\, the endorsement of holiness must be taking place now.\n

And most of us spend an inordinately large amount of our time earning or spending money. The Bible gives the last word on advice regarding investment as we read in this verse. Unfortunately no one can deposit their money or material wealth directly into heaven\, except by giving it away (when Jesus once promised a rich man he would have treasure in heaven). \nHowever\, by what each one of us does with our life\, who we make our Master and serve\, we may lay up treasure in heaven. It is sad to report that relatively few pay any attention to this important matter. Hence Jesus’ injunction to us today.\n

His word dispels our fears; it keeps us in the place of perfect safety. \nIf everything is dependent upon Him for life and breath\, can He possibly fail when it comes to His care for the least of His children! \nIt is as though\, after attending the matters of the universe\, He stoops to talk with and encourage you as you look apprehensively into the day that lies ahead.

DESCRIPTION:<b>“Serve the Lord your God”.</b>  Hezekiah’s reign marked a reformation in Jerusalem and a reinstatement of the offices of the temple. He told his people that they had a responsibility to serve the Lord. It is a message that needs telling today. \nHezekiah’s message was for all the people. By their consecration and dedication\, all must serve the Lord. The worship of Jehovah was to be an integral part of their life. \nThe way that worship had been discredited and disbanded incurred the wrath of God and Hezekiah told the people they should begin again to serve the Lord that His wrath might be appeased.  God has done great things for us as He did for the Israelites in Hezekiah’s day: we need to appreciate this and serve Him with a grateful heart.

DESCRIPTION:<b>“Nympha and the church in her house”. </b> We owe it to recent translation to tell us that this name applied to a lady and not a man. Yet we know nothing more about her except that if you know anything about the believers in Colosse you would know there was a gathering in Nympha’s home. Paul knew it and had visited it and was blessed by it and so sent greetings in his Epistle. \nThe woman still makes the home. How blessed for her when that home is known as a place where the Lord’s people can meet. There is need for homes to be opened up to gatherings of the local church and it is the opportunity for any lady who would do so to be a modern “Mother in Israel” to those who are not so blessed with a Christian environment.\n

Demas had forsaken him and become enticed away from the faith\, returning to Thessalonica. His faithful companions\, Crescens and Titus\, had now left him for Galatia and Dalmatia respectively. Alexander\, perhaps the one supporting him in Ephesus\, had now turned out to be evil and at Paul’s first court appearance no-one stood with him. His use of the word “notwithstanding” is so significant. \nAnd it can be significant to you as you trust in Christ\, for no matter how many let you down and leave you just when you feel you need them most\, you may know the Lord standing by you and strengthening you. It is when you are cast wholly upon Him that you appreciate who He is and what He does.\n
