SUMMARY:"speak evil of no man" [Titus 3:2]
DESCRIPTION:“speak evil of no man”. There is something good in all the brethren. They may not think or do just as you do but it is as likely that you are mistaken on some things as they are. \nAny fool can stir the mud but it is those who seek the best out of others who are careful to encourage the good in a person. \nThe apostle does not say there is no evil\, for this is found in us all. Even in the most saintly the old nature rears its ugly head from time to time. What he does say is that we should not speak to others about it. Some who find fault find nothing else. They knock down but never build up. There are enough in the demolition business\, so you be among those who speak evil of no man. \nJust stay quiet – God will judge.

SUMMARY:"HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD" [Zechariah 14:20]
DESCRIPTION:“Holiness Unto The Lord”. As a doctrine\, holiness has become obscured in the present climate: as a way of life it has practically disappeared. Past generations may have collected dead wood\, but in trying to be rid of it\, to say that the Christian may do whatever is standard behaviour in the world\, is not right. \nHoliness is not like an adhesive label. It is a process that begins when the heart is cleansed and something that develops as one walks with the Lord. The prophet described this name as ‘engraved upon’ the bells of the horses. \n‘Be holy’ is an injunction that demands constant attention; getting alongside those in need in the world\, yet keeping oneself unspotted from the world. \nThere will be no engraving the name at heaven’s gate\, the endorsement of holiness must be taking place now.\n

SUMMARY:"lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven" [Matthew 6:20]
DESCRIPTION:“lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven”. The financial world is continually bombarding us with details both of interest rates and where we may expect a greater return on our money. And most of us spend an inordinately large amount of our time earning or spending money. The Bible gives the last word on advice regarding investment as we read in this verse. Unfortunately no one can deposit their money or material wealth directly into heaven\, except by giving it away (when Jesus once promised a rich man he would have treasure in heaven). \nHowever\, by what each one of us does with our life\, who we make our Master and serve\, we may lay up treasure in heaven. It is sad to report that relatively few pay any attention to this important matter. Hence Jesus’ injunction to us today.\n

SUMMARY:upholding all things by the word of his power" [Hebrews 1:3]
DESCRIPTION:“upholding all things by the word of his power”. Those who do not know the Lord do not believe His word and cannot appreciate how mighty a word it is. He speaks and it is done\, whether the creation of the universe or the stilling of a turbulent sea on which the disciples journeyed. \nHis all-powerful word extends to the smallest detail in your life and mine. His word dispels our fears; it keeps us in the place of perfect safety. \nIf everything is dependent upon Him for life and breath\, can He possibly fail when it comes to His care for the least of His children! \nIt is as though\, after attending the matters of the universe\, He stoops to talk with and encourage you as you look apprehensively into the day that lies ahead.

SUMMARY:"a new thing" [Isaiah 43:19]
DESCRIPTION:“a new thing”. Life is ever advancing and God is in the vanguard. The gospel message spread all over the world because its messengers were prepared to do something new – they crossed the sea to carry it to the unknown. \nThere are mighty victories to be won in the Name of the Lord as the kingdom of God advances – but only if its members are prepared to step out in faith. \nA new day brings new blessings as we receive new instructions and are prepared for new experiences. \nThe Christians who find life stale and monotonous are those who refuse anything new. Within the plan and purpose of God there is something new for every disciple today.\n

SUMMARY:"not willing" [John 5:40(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“not willing” \n– unwilling to unseat pride and to exalt the Lord God. \n– unwilling to lose one’s life to find a greater. \n– unwilling to take up a cross\, which in reality is easier than the yoke already worn. \n– unwilling to step out of line from the giddy throng and to step into line with God. \n– not willing to come to Jesus that they might have life. \n \nUnwillingness makes for lost opportunities\, missed promotion\, stunted growth\, miserable existence and a sense of failure. \nThose who are willing get the best of everything. Those who will\, may find assurance of eternal life in Christ. \nWhoever trusts in Him will never be confounded.

SUMMARY:"Serve the Lord your God" [II Chronicles 30:8]
DESCRIPTION:“Serve the Lord your God”. Hezekiah’s reign marked a reformation in Jerusalem and a reinstatement of the offices of the temple. He told his people that they had a responsibility to serve the Lord. It is a message that needs telling today. \nHezekiah’s message was for all the people. By their consecration and dedication\, all must serve the Lord. The worship of Jehovah was to be an integral part of their life. \nThe way that worship had been discredited and disbanded incurred the wrath of God and Hezekiah told the people they should begin again to serve the Lord that His wrath might be appeased. God has done great things for us as He did for the Israelites in Hezekiah’s day: we need to appreciate this and serve Him with a grateful heart.

SUMMARY:Nympha and the church in her house" [Colossians 4:15(RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Nympha and the church in her house”. We owe it to recent translation to tell us that this name applied to a lady and not a man. Yet we know nothing more about her except that if you know anything about the believers in Colosse you would know there was a gathering in Nympha’s home. Paul knew it and had visited it and was blessed by it and so sent greetings in his Epistle. \nThe woman still makes the home. How blessed for her when that home is known as a place where the Lord’s people can meet. There is need for homes to be opened up to gatherings of the local church and it is the opportunity for any lady who would do so to be a modern “Mother in Israel” to those who are not so blessed with a Christian environment.\n

SUMMARY:"Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me\, and strengthened me" [II Timothy 4:17]
DESCRIPTION:“Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me\, and strengthened me”. Paul had his disappointments. He wrote the words from prison in Rome. Demas had forsaken him and become enticed away from the faith\, returning to Thessalonica. His faithful companions\, Crescens and Titus\, had now left him for Galatia and Dalmatia respectively. Alexander\, perhaps the one supporting him in Ephesus\, had now turned out to be evil and at Paul’s first court appearance no-one stood with him. His use of the word “notwithstanding” is so significant. \nAnd it can be significant to you as you trust in Christ\, for no matter how many let you down and leave you just when you feel you need them most\, you may know the Lord standing by you and strengthening you. It is when you are cast wholly upon Him that you appreciate who He is and what He does.\n

SUMMARY:"You must be born again" [John 3:7(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“You must be born again”. From Jesus’ words to Nicodemus\, credit for the following was not enough: \n– Seeking counsel from Jesus \n– Deep respect for the Person and ministry of Jesus \n– Religious upbringing \n– High office in the church – a Pharisee \n– Exemplary public life as a leader of his nation \n– A mind that tried to reason things out \n– Not afraid to ask questions \nNicodemus came to Jesus with a hunger for God in his soul. Jesus almost at once told him what his trouble was. \nJesus lovingly says the same to all who are in similar need\, ‘You must be born again’.\n

SUMMARY:"the Lord your God is gracious and merciful" [II Chronicles 30:9]
DESCRIPTION:“the Lord your God is gracious and merciful”. All who come to God in true humility and repentance find grace and mercy. It is when we acknowledge we deserve punishment from Him we may find mercy. God’s graciousness calls on His mercy. Under Hezekiah Israel needed to put right the evil that had permeated the nation. Some scorned Hezekiah’s call to attend the feast of unleavened bread and the Passover. These did not see any need or purpose in this and so they did not find God. \nIt was the great company that did come to Jerusalem from both Israel and Judah that was blessed. You will not find grace and mercy unless you come. The past is not the problem: it is your attendance now that God desires. When blessing is administered be among those who receive it.

SUMMARY:"most of them did not even know why they had come" [Acts 19:32(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“most of them did not even know why they had come”. They were just carried along with the crowd and found themselves in the amphitheatre crying\, ‘Great is Artemis of Ephesus’ for two hours on end. (This was the demonstration orchestrated to oppose the Apostle Paul.) \nPeople today don’t know why they do a lot of things. In the heat of the moment they seemed right but afterwards they regret what happened. So often we fail to appreciate what is going on. Most are unaware of what God is doing and oblivious to His love towards them in sending Jesus. They do not realise it is sin that causes them to ever make mistakes. The town clerk of Ephesus did at last bring some sanity to that uproar in Ephesus. Today it behoves the Christian to do the same in the circle where he moves.\n

SUMMARY:"and there was no more sea" [Revelation 21:1]
DESCRIPTION:“and there was no more sea”. In several chapters in Revelation sea is mentioned: chapter 4 describes a sea of glass\, like crystal before the throne. Ch.5 every creature in the sea crying blessing and glory unto the Lamb. Ch.7 the wind was not to blow on the sea and an angel was given permission to harm the sea. Ch.8 the sea becomes blood and a third of the creatures die. Ch.10 shows us an angel with one foot in the sea. Ch.12 a beast is seen rising out of the sea. There is also a sea of glass mingled with fire and an angel pours a vial of God’s wrath upon the sea and finally the sea gives up her dead before the great white judgment throne. \nHere in Ch.21 there is no more sea. Mystery (the sea holds many mysteries)\, rebellion (we know the anger of the waves) and turbulence (life can be like a turbulent sea) are done away. And there will be no more partings.\n

SUMMARY:"Master\, all these have I observed from my youth" [Mark 10:20]
DESCRIPTION:“Master\, all these have I observed from my youth”. Maximum attendance\, paying full attention\, committing to memory the Law and the Commandments and applying this to every aspect of his life was not enough. \nPerfect in all but one point is to be imperfect. The young ruler’s perfection in so much made him very conscious of his lack – hence his coming to Jesus. In doing so he illustrates that all need to come. And all may find the answer: whether one thing or everything\, the Lord will point out what we lack. The sad thing is that having cleared all but one it was this last hurdle that floored him. \nHe would not let the Lord touch the one thing that he treasured most. It is our failure the Lord wants to do something about.\n

SUMMARY:"Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites" [II Chronicles 30:22(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Hezekiah spoke encouragingly to all the Levites”. People need encouragement and God’s work needs “encouragers”. There is a lot of lethargy and half-heartedness and folk need encouraging to begin working. Note that it was the Levites\, or priestly tribe\, that Hezekiah encouraged. They led the people in worship and they needed encouragement. They were not the last to wonder what they were doing all this for and whether it was all worth it. \nServing the Lord can experience much discouragement before its final reward. The pathway is often lined with doubters and sceptics. Plenty will say the work will not succeed before it has started and the inspiration from them is like a damp firework. So\, look to the Lord\, get the heavenly aspect of the work and be encouraged.

SUMMARY:"the deputy\, when he saw what was done\, believed" [Acts 13:12]
DESCRIPTION:“the deputy\, when he saw what was done\, believed”. The deputy was astonished to find a statement of belief that was supported by a miracle. It was the Lord working\, confirming His word with signs following\, as Mark says at the end of his Gospel. Saul\, at the beginning of his ministry\, rebuked Elymas the sorcerer for withstanding the advance of the gospel\, and he was stricken with blindness. Sometimes we look for a miracle to suit our own ends or to ease things for us. When it hurts we pray the Lord to remove the condition and so often the Lord graciously answers our prayer. \nThe importance of this miracle at Paphos was that it proved the truth of the gospel and the deputy believed. This was to happen repeatedly. The end of all testimony must be that those who hear and see come to believe.

DESCRIPTION:“Serve the Lord with gladness”. There are times when this reminder is timely: \nWhen asked to do something we would not choose. \nWhen the job in hand calls for special grace. \nWhen we go for a long period without any obvious result. \nWhen our lamp burns low or we are asked to donate the last thing that is left. \nWhen bereft or bereaved or when loneliness is our only companion. \nRemember the Lord put you where you are for a purpose and He will provide all that you need as you step forward in faith. SUMMARY:"I am not worthy" [Matthew 8:8]
DESCRIPTION:“I am not worthy”. The centurion had an opinion of himself that would be rather out of fashion today. He acknowledged he was an unworthy sinner in God’s sight; he knew he was a transgressor and felt morally unfit before Jesus. \nPopular thinking today would never demand that you stoop so low as this. It would rather dwell upon the worthier aspects of human nature – making God fit into its requirement rather than complying with His demands as found in the Bible. \nThe Bible says all are unworthy. If you do not acknowledge sin you can see no need for an atoning sacrifice and no need for a Saviour and consequently\, no joy of salvation. This man said he was not worthy and out of that unworthiness Jesus said he found the greatest faith in all Israel. It can be the same with all who are honest with God.

DESCRIPTION:“I will do whatever you say”. Naomi was a godly woman who suffered great personal sorrow and loss and in the process of time her loss was compensated by one of her daughters-in-law\, Ruth. Ruth shone because of her unwavering devotion to Naomi. She chose caring for Naomi before going back to her own people and then when getting settled in the land of Judah\, laid great store by her mother-in-law’s counsel. \nIn no way do you have to do what others say – counsel and guidance is often contradictory\, anyway. But when you recognise wise words you do well to heed them. This means listening to the request of others. Few of us can have wiser words than Ruth received. Her obedience gained her acceptance in Israel\, a husband and a family and a place in the Messianic line.

DESCRIPTION:“Lord\, I want to see”. \nIf you realise something is missing in your life… \nIf your quest for a purpose has not yet been fulfilled… \nShould it be that you feel there is something more than you have at present – a spiritual dimension that you know nothing of… \nWhen all the reasoning you can bring to bear plus the counsel of friends cannot solve the problem that is troubling you… \nWhen there seems neither rhyme nor reason for what is happening to you… \nIf sorrow and distress have become too intense to bear… \nThen you are in the right place to pray the prayer of Bartimaeus. He was not too blind as to miss asking what all the commotion was about and once he knew it was Jesus passing by\, this prayer ensured he received his sight.

SUMMARY:‘Moses whom they refused’ [Acts 7:35]
DESCRIPTION:‘Moses whom they refused’. These words are taken from Stephen’s sermon – recorded at length in the Acts of the Apostles\, no doubt to give a lead to preachers in all generations.\nThe Children of Israel did refuse Moses when he acted impetuously in slaying an Egyptian and no doubt he thought he had lost any chance of leadership during his forty years’ exile.\nBut he whom the people refused\, God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer. The Lord fulfils His purpose and calling.\nRefusal of those whom God chooses is still quite common. They can push you into a siding for a while but God will see to it you do not go off the rails!\nAngels still visit those who are outcasts or in prison. Let man’s refusal be God’s opportunity all in His good time.

SUMMARY:‘If anyone wants to boast’ [Jeremiah 9:24 (GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:‘If anyone wants to boast’. We generally discourage boasting but here the Lord says that anyone wanting to boast should boast that he knows and understands Me.\nWe read here that wise men boast of their wisdom\, strong men of their strength and rich men of their wealth. Knowing the Lord means a recognition of His great love and mercy: understanding that He does what is just and right. He died for our sins: He provides our salvation.\nThe Apostle Paul said that he would glory in the cross. We can and must boast in what God can do.\nHe comes to our aid when we are unable to save ourselves: He keeps us in life’s treacherous paths: He cleanses and sanctifies us and presents us before His Father and gives the gift of eternal life. We boast in Him.

SUMMARY:‘a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions’ [Luke 12:15 (RSV)]
DESCRIPTION:‘a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions’. There is a desire in the heart of man to possess and own. Collecting a little usually creates the desire to have more.\nSo we mistakenly ask ‘What is he worth?’ meaning what does he possess. The fallacy is obvious when at the end of life all has to be left behind. In the light of this we ask\, ‘Is there nothing more in life than what we leave behind?’ Even when we try to assess what a person has done\, we have to recognise that he or she is doing no more.\nSome other scale must be found. Is there no link between earth and heaven\, no way that we may keep what is done now?\nJesus said that believing in Him imparts everlasting life\, that the one who believes will not perish. This is the pearl of greatest price and worth selling all to obtain.

SUMMARY:‘Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt? ‘ [Numbers 14:3 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:‘Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt? . There will always be those who want to turn back at the first sign of problem or distress. In this case it was a large majority of the Children of Israel that sought this.\nSometimes we fail to advertise the hardships there are in the Christian pathway. We make what is difficult look very attractive. Maybe this increases the number of desertions.\nThe attraction is the goal at the end of the race\, the glory that is to follow the life-long campaign. The attractions of Egypt were real but the prospect they afforded unacceptable. Most of all was the disregard for God’s mighty deliverance and promises He had made. On the high-road to heaven there can be no going back. ‘Forward’ is the command and God’s promise the provision.

SUMMARY:‘Do not be afraid of sudden terror’ [Proverbs 3:25 (RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:‘Do not be afraid of sudden terror’. If we use the God-given gifts of sound wisdom and discretion we may ask Him for wisdom in conducting our lives. Those who do so will walk safely\, their foot will not stumble. They will lie down and not be afraid. Their sleep will be sweet and uninterrupted.\nSudden calamity may come but it will not cause terror. Trouble can be unpleasant but it need not disturb the deep peace that trust in the Lord gives.\nTrust in the Lord makes the Lord your confidence. He triumphed and by His grace\, so will you. He never fails though our failure to understand makes it necessary for us to trust where we cannot see.\nWhen terror does strike\, those who walk with the Lord in the noonday can have confidence in Him in the dark night.

SUMMARY:‘to us\, or to everyone? ‘ [Luke 12:41 (NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:‘to us\, or to everyone? ‘. Peter asked this of Jesus’ words when He spoke of being ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when He is not expected. Each of us needs to hear God speaking to us. When all we read and hear of the gospel message and responsibility is general\, it loses its conviction. We hide behind or with everyone else whereas the gospel singles us out.\nGod’s word may be read by all but it must speak to you.\nWhether repentance and forgiveness of sins or obedience to Christ in the path you take\, it is God’s word to you that counts. The Holy Spirit conveys the will of God for you. What others will do is another thing.\nThe word\, the promise\, the power and enabling are to us. We need to hear\, trust and obey.

SUMMARY:‘a wall of fire round about’ [Zechariah 2:5]
DESCRIPTION:‘a wall of fire round about’. It may have been that the prophet was thinking of the shepherds lighting fires around the unfenced city of Jerusalem and likening it to God’s protection for His people.\nThe protection of the Lord spells safety to His People\, as the pillar of fire between the Israelites and the pursuing hosts of Egyptians reminds us. The city of Jerusalem was without walls and must have presented a valuable target to those who did not appreciate the protection that God afforded her. The same may be erroneously applied to the Christian. How weak and defenceless he may seem in the world. The quality of meekness seems out of place until he realises that the Lord is a wall of fire about him. It is this wall of fire that makes your position unassailable.
