SUMMARY:"this is the promise … even eternal life" [I John 2:25]
DESCRIPTION:“this is the promise … even eternal life”. It is the greatest promise of all – it grasps a prize beyond the grave and places it in the heart of those who make Jesus Lord.\nBecause it is God’s promise\, it conveys real hope to the hearts of those who believe it. All who do\, recognise that it is made upon the efficacy of the sacrifice of God’s Son for sin upon Golgotha’s Cross. It is granted upon the merit of the complete cleansing brought about by the precious blood of Jesus that enables a believer to live for ever.\nThe wages of sin is death: but eternal life is God’s gift to those who will take Jesus as personal Saviour. That atoning death saves those who believe. Eternal life is the possession of those who stand upon God’s promise.

SUMMARY:"Faithful are the wounds of a friend" [Proverbs 27:6]
DESCRIPTION:“Faithful are the wounds of a friend”. Sometimes it is necessary to wound in order to heal: this is notably so in the case of surgery when the surgeon makes an incision to remove diseased tissue.\nIt is also true in the things of the Spirit. Our waywardness and refusal to listen and obey the voice of the Lord make it necessary to wound our spirits to cleanse them of those things that defile and hinder our growth.\nWounding after this manner is so different from wounds in battle. There is no enmity\, evil or malice in the wounds of a friend. All is done for our good.\nWe need faith to understand that when the Lord hurts it is to heal\, when He withholds it is to give more abundantly.\nTrust the Lord and see there is good in all His treatment.

SUMMARY:"But you were unwilling to go up" [Deuteronomy 1:26(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“But you were unwilling to go up”. It was a contest between God’s word and the Israelites’ reasoning. They listened to the gloomy report of the majority of the spies. Their minds operated on an earthly level and did not take into account that the God who had brought them so mightily out of Egypt’s bondage could take them into the land He had chosen for them.\nRely on human reasoning and you’ll accomplish little. Have faith in His word and see the way open up ahead.\nArm yourself with His word and His promise to be with you always and you’ll not fear to go up no matter how steep and winding the path to the summit may look. Take the first step and continue to press ahead – you’ll look back on all the way He has led you.\nDon’t you be unwilling any more.

SUMMARY:"he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem" [Luke 9:51]
DESCRIPTION:“he steadfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem”. Jesus’ task was greater than anyone living had ever performed or ever could perform. The path that lay before Him was one of suffering. He who was holy\, harmless and undefiled was to bear the sin of the world and be sacrificed as the Lamb of God after the cruel trial and mocking in Jerusalem.\nHe did so and triumphed gloriously over sin and death and became a living Saviour and Lord\, risen from the dead and alive for evermore. He did so because at a certain point in His life on earth\, when Jerusalem and all it held came before Him\, He steadfastly set His face as a flint\, determined to go ahead and pay the price for our ransom.\nRealisation of this must cause our hearts to well up in praise and adoration for our glorious Lord Jesus.

SUMMARY:"in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord" [I Peter 3:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord”. This is not an outward form or observance or conforming to a pattern laid down for you. It is not erecting an altar in a corner or a part of your life.\nIt is setting up a throne room in the very centre of your being and inviting Christ to reign there. It cannot be done without turning out whatever we held in that place of honour before. It is not a room full of idols that we worship\, but a place where Christ reigns alone.\nThe Lord will be working in every part of your life only when He is set apart in your heart as Lord. He will reign supreme when He rules supreme. Ascribe greatness to the Lord: exalt His mighty Name. When the throne room is within you your whole life becomes a peal of praise and worship.

SUMMARY:"He knows your trudging through this great wilderness" [Deuteronomy 2:7(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“He knows your trudging through this great wilderness”. Forty years wandering in the desert might aptly be described as trudging.\nIn many ways our world is like a great wilderness and the path we sometimes need to take may call for trudging.\nThere are times when all of us wonder if we’ve missed the way: at others whether we’ll ever reach the promised goal.\nBut God’s Word is sure and the promise that He will never leave you or forsake you transcends the hardship.\nThe Children of Israel had a daily reminder of God’s provision throughout their journey in the manna and quails provided for them. They should also have realised the Lord gave them divine health and preserved them. Call it a trudge if you will\, but realise the Lord knows every step you take.

SUMMARY:"Everyone living in Jerusalem knows" [Acts 4:16(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Everyone living in Jerusalem knows”. The blessings of the gospel spilled outside the doors where the disciples were meeting. And when the man was healed at the Temple gate – everybody in Jerusalem knew about it.\nThe world at large wants good news. When the Lord is at work among His people\, the message is worth carrying outside. Indeed\, it is outside that a real impact is felt.\nSatan’s lies have for too long deceived men into thinking that the Lord denies us our greatest pleasures and desires.\nLet God begin to work and things start happening. Lives are changed\, sick are healed\, the downcast uplifted and joy enters the heart. If everybody living around you does not know\, is it because nothing is happening or because you are not telling them?

SUMMARY:"we will keep looking to you\, O Lord our God" [Psalm 123:2(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“we will keep looking to you\, O Lord our God”. In the Old Testament we read that “they looked unto Him and their faces were enlightened”. In the New Testament we are exhorted to live looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith.\nPeter made the mistake of looking away from the Lord to the waves upon which he was walking. He learned that you sink beneath what you fix your eye upon unless it be the Lord. Your spiritual life depends upon sight of Jesus. Even through the gloom of doubt that sometimes enshrouds us or the depths of sorrow that envelop us we should make out the Person of the Lord. That is what faith does – it sees the Lord at all times.\nMake firm your resolve to keep looking to the Lord today.

SUMMARY:"speak the word only" [Matthew 8:8]
DESCRIPTION:“speak the word only”. The centurion must have recognised the authority that resided in Jesus and consequently he knew the power that was in His word.\nJesus spoke with authority – “even the demons obey Him” was the sentiment expressed on one occasion. When He halted the funeral procession as it left Nain no wonder the dead son was raised to life at the word of Jesus – or Lazarus stood to his feet and came out of the tomb\, or Jairus’ daughter was woken from her sleep of death at the sound of His voice.\nToday it is His word that needs to be heard. More important than what we think is what He says. Our part must be to hear His voice and obey His word. This is what the centurion did and we all know the result.

SUMMARY:"Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters" [Hebrews 13:1(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters”. God’s family on earth will differ on many interpretations because none has all the answers and some things must wait till glory before their purpose is plain.\nEveryone in the family is adopted by the grace of God. All are blood-bought by that sacrifice of the life of Jesus on the cross at Golgotha. To all the promises of God are “amen” and “yes” in Christ. God’s care and love by the ministry of the Spirit extends to all.\nRealise the relationship that exists between Christ and your brothers and sisters and you can love them as you love Christ.\nIf you don’t love your brother whom you have seen\, how can you love Christ whom you have not seen?

SUMMARY:"do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live" [Deuteronomy 4:9(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live”. If this injunction was needed for the Israelite in the Old Testament\, it is certainly needed by the follower of Jesus today.\nJesus described His followers as fools and slow of heart more than once and chided them for forgetting what He had taught them and their experiences with Him in the past.\nThe only sure way to not let the lessons of the past slip is to rehearse them and thank the Lord for them.\nIf you’re for ever praising Him for bringing you thus far\, you’ll be convinced of His power to keep you and your trust in Him will be firm and sure. Enjoy the blessings of the past and with expectancy look to an even more blessed future. Rejoice in the Lord always.

SUMMARY:"now he commands all men everywhere to repent" [Acts 17:30(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“now he commands all men everywhere to repent”. We are so lethargic that God needs do more than provide a way of escape\, He must command us to take it! This he does and commands all men everywhere to repent; to turn from their evil ways and look to the Lord. We must behave responsibly with the life He has given us. It is to us that God is speaking today and it is our lives that carry responsibility.\nWe need to repent if we would be free from the failure and purposeless existence outside Christ. God offers eternal life – beginning now – to those who will repent. He has provided a way of salvation whereby whoever will may be saved from the consequences of sin. God has appointed a day when He will judge the world in righteousness. Man must stop\, assess his position\, turn to God in repentance if he will be saved at last.

SUMMARY:"The midwives … let the boys live" [Exodus 1:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The midwives … let the boys live”. The Hebrew midwives\, Shiphrah and Puah\, feared God and recognised that the command of Pharaoh to kill all baby boys born to the Israelites was evil.\nThey did not do as the king commanded\, but found a way round the dilemma. They encouraged the Hebrew mothers to have their babies before they arrived\, or delayed their arrival until after the delivery! The important thing was that they let the boys live and later thousands of the young Hebrew men who left Egypt for the Promised Land owed their lives to these two brave and resourceful women.\nIn every generation there have been those despots who sought to thwart the plan of God. But the Lord has had His servants who have recognised the evil intended. We can thank God for all who take their stand against evil men.

SUMMARY:"Even the dogs eat the crumbs" [Matthew 15:27(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“Even the dogs eat the crumbs”. Here was a lady who accepted her position but was not afraid to ask. Jesus’ ministry was primarily amongst the Jews\, so Gentiles\, like this woman\, were ‘outsiders’.\nBy emphasising this fact\, Jesus not only gives the woman an opportunity to express her faith but also gives Himself\, the Christ\, the opportunity to demonstrate His love for all. The woman is happy for ‘crumbs’ from Jesus knowing that ‘crumbs’ will be enough for the needs of her daughter.\nAn experience of Jesus in your life and mine is not dependent on being one of the ‘in’ crowd or having religious pedigree. It’s simply dependent on the mercy of Christ and our boldness to come to Him in faith.

DESCRIPTION:“Wait\, my daughter\, until you find out what happens”. Other translations say “Sit still” – the most difficult thing to do when you’re excited and wanting to get things moving. But it was sound advice that Naomi gave to her daughter-in-law.\nIt was almost too good to be true that the nobleman Boaz would take this refugee Moabitess to be his wife. Yet if God was in it\, there was no problem.\nGod’s plan is exciting for your life if you will surrender it to Him. It is often something that unfolds a little at a time as in the love match between Ruth and Boaz.\nThere is no need to rush ahead: sometimes you do better to sit still and see just what is happening. As your life is in His hand\, you will see it happen all in good time.

SUMMARY:"those who are … unstable twist" [II Peter 3:16(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“those who are … unstable twist”. The Apostle Peter refers to things in Paul’s Epistles which are hard to understand. These references were not made in any derogatory manner but as a warning to those who twist Scriptures for their own use.\nThe danger is that when we find something we do not like in the Bible we turn it around to mean something that better suits our thinking or conforms to some special revelation we think we have. Our great need is for the Holy Spirit to illumine those things we find difficult to understand. Rather than make the hard verse fit into what you already believe\, why not ask the Holy Spirit to reveal some new blessing He has for you from the Word of God today?\nWhatever you do\, don’t change the meaning – twisting Scripture is only done to the destruction of the soul.

SUMMARY:"he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord" [Isaiah 37:14(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord”. Hezekiah’s example is a good one to follow. He was a godly king and used to praying to the Lord and when Sennacherib\, King of Assyria sent a threatening and frightening letter to say he was about to attack\, it is not surprising to find that Hezekiah turned to the Lord.\nNote that he laid the letter before the Lord. The Lord knew all about it\, but by doing this Hezekiah was able to lay his concern before the Lord.\nDon’t hesitate to tell the Lord everything that is in your heart. Go into detail even though you realise God knows all about the matter. The Lord delights to share the needs of His children and He may allow us to be apprehensive because it makes us plead the case before Him.

DESCRIPTION:“Blessed is every one who fears the Lord”. “Everyone blessed” is a sweeping statement\, but it is true. Whoever places the God of the whole earth in His rightful place must know blessing. To expect enduring blessing without Him is folly.\nExalt Him: Extol His mighty Name in your heart\, experience Him in your life and blessing will be yours. SUMMARY:"narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life" [Matthew 7:14(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life”. A man must humble himself if he would enter the gate.\nOnce sin is confessed and forgiven and Jesus is in His rightful place as Lord\, there can be no sitting back at ease. All hell may be loosed to get the Child of God back into the devil’s camp again. Add to this the fact that the Christian life is an upward climb all the way and you will see that “difficult” is no overstatement. Yet neither the narrowness of the gate nor the difficulty of the way need deter the one who would attain life.\nThe gate is not too narrow for the Holy Spirit to lead you through it\, neither is the way so difficult that the strength of the Lord cannot sustain you in it. Whoever will may come. Those who come He does not turn away. Once on the way\, eternal life is yours in Christ.

SUMMARY:"children of the promise" [Romans 9:8(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“children of the promise”. This is what we have become through faith in Jesus Christ. God promised Abraham that “through your offspring all the nations of the earth will be blessed.”\nIn and through the work of Christ\, the blessing is now available to all. In Christ we have become children of God and now share in the eternal promises given to Abraham.\nThis is not for a worldly inheritance that will fade and perish but for a place in the new heaven and earth. It’s a promise that still stands and is secure in Christ. It will be fulfilled when Jesus comes again.\nUntil then\, let us be sure to live as ‘children of the promise.’

SUMMARY:"and great will be your children's peace" [Isaiah 54:13(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“and great will be your children’s peace”. This chapter in the prophecy of Isaiah describes the future glory of Zion\, the city of God. Those journeying there should not be afraid – they will not suffer shame. They should not fear disgrace and will not be humiliated.\nIt is the Holy One of Israel who is their Redeemer\, the Creator of all things\, the Almighty One whose word is pledged for you. With everlasting kindness He will have compassion on them and His love for them be unfailing.\nThe city will be built with stones of turquoise\, its battlements will be rubies\, its gates sparkling pearls and its walls precious stones. Best of all\, their sons will be taught in the Lord and great will be their children’s peace. Comforting indeed in a world of strife.

SUMMARY:"the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man" [Titus 3:4]
DESCRIPTION:“the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man”. Where can greater love be found than in God so loving the world that He gave His Only Son?\nThe object of that loving kindness was rebellious and unlovely. Even now most of those on whom this love was expended are disinterested in what God has done for them.\nChrist dying for our sins was but the beginning of a caring and loving that would protect and guide those who would respond.\nGod’s love for His children must be the wonder of the hosts of heaven. It never ceases to amaze those who reach out in faith and receive it. The kindness and love of God reaches the very depth of one’s being. The blessing you may experience today is but the beginning – the day is coming when we shall bathe in its eternal fullness.

SUMMARY:"set your affection on things above" [Colossians 3:2]
DESCRIPTION:“set your affection on things above”. There is so much to attract below that it needs a conscious effort to do this! Our world is so full of fascinating things which\, while not evil in themselves\, detract from the things of God.\nFascinations\, obsessions and desires that are not of the Lord need pulling out like weeds from our garden if we would please the Lord.\nThis only happens when you set your affection in the right place. The Bible tells us not to love the world because it wants us to love the Lord. You cannot serve both – if you try you will hate one and love the other.\nFall in love with the Lord and enjoy a life in the Spirit and claim the promises that God has given you.

SUMMARY:"women who work hard in the Lord" [Romans 16:12(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“women who work hard in the Lord”. This is not about whether you go out to work or not. It’s not about getting status from a job title or how much you earn. This is work that is done ‘in the Lord’ – based on a relationship with Christ. Hard work involves effort\, sacrifice\, even struggle. What makes it worthwhile is that it is done ‘in the Lord.’ Paul encourages the Church in Corinth with the words ‘you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain.’ Whether working for a secular or Christian business\, whether helping the local church or helping family and friends\, our love for Jesus and desire to honour Him should motivate us to work hard ‘as unto the Lord.’ Irrespective of what reward we get on earth\, a reward is waiting in heaven.

SUMMARY:"He touched her hand and the fever left her" [Matthew 8:15]
DESCRIPTION:“He touched her hand and the fever left her”. Fever rages in many today.\n The fever of frustration – trying so hard yet never seeming to get there.\n The fever of human effort – demanding we put all we have into it yet gaining nothing of eternal value.\n The fever of passion and of evil desire – a fever that can rise to great pitch if left unchecked.\n The fever or fire of temptation – its temperature is so hot.\n Suffering the fever of persecution and animosity against the children of God.\nBut the touch of the Lord will dispel all these and many more. Don’t let Peter’s mother-in-law be the only one to benefit. If you’re running one of these fevers\, it’s the touch of the Lord you need.

SUMMARY:"The Lord has done great things for us" [Psalm 126:3(RAV)]
DESCRIPTION:“The Lord has done great things for us”. Often at the time\, God’s plan and purpose was obscure – you did not recognise just what He was doing. But now you can see things in better perspective. You are enjoying today the fruit of God’s blessing upon your life in days past.\nThe way He called you out of sin’s darkness: the way He calls to you day by day in loving guidance and fellowship. These are great things. That He has given you great and precious promises in His Word which you may prove as you exercise the gift of faith. This is a great thing. The fact that He has gone ahead\, preparing the way and preparing to receive you into His eternal Kingdom.\nThese and the myriad other “greats” the Lord has done for us make us glad.

SUMMARY:"you have put all my sins behind your back" [Isaiah 38:17(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“you have put all my sins behind your back”. Hezekiah had just been granted an extension to his life after God had told him to put his house in order because he was about to die. He had been very distressed about this and pleaded his case before the Lord. And the Lord confirmed by a miracle that Hezekiah’s prayer had been heard. The shadow on Hezekiah’s sundial went back ten steps.\nHezekiah\, though a godly king\, was sinful as we all are\, and he was told that God had put all his sins behind His back. Today we know that to be gloriously real when we confess our sin and receive the forgiveness made possible by the death of Jesus on the cross. This is a truth that lifts the burden from the spirit.

SUMMARY:"I want to encourage you" [I Peter 5:12(GNB)]
DESCRIPTION:“I want to encourage you”. What a lovely expression! How we should all be seeking to do this\, one to the other! Here are some ways in which we may encourage our brothers and sisters:\n take a genuine interest in their situation\n tell them you appreciate what they are doing\n assure them you’re praying for them\, talk positively with them\n tell them about others who have won through\n be an overcomer in the Lord yourself and help them to do the same\n pick them up when they’re down\, put them right when they’re wrong and do it all in true brotherly love\n be ready to sacrifice something in order to help them\n show them from the Scriptures the goodness of the Lord.

SUMMARY:"I am a woman who is deeply troubled" [I Samuel 1:15(NIV)]
DESCRIPTION:“I am a woman who is deeply troubled”. Hannah was disturbed in spirit because God had shut her womb and prayer did not seem to be having any effect. So she sets us the good example of continuing more fervently in prayer rather than giving up praying.\nFurthermore\, her fervent prayer was misunderstood by the priest Eli who thought she was drunk since her lips moved but no voice was heard.\nYet God heard her prayer and the fact that she was made to wait and prayed the more intently caused her to make the promise that her son would be wholly given to the Lord. And we all know how God blessed Samuel whom she gave to serve the Lord.\nLet your deep trouble drive you to the Lord.

SUMMARY:"Peace\, be still" [Mark 4:39]
DESCRIPTION:“Peace\, be still”. There are really two statements in these words of Jesus as He stood among the frightened disciples in a storm.\nPeace – that is His Name – Prince of Peace. He challenged the fear that had gripped His disciples. In that boat with Jesus was the safest place they could be. “Peace” was spoken to their troubled hearts and it is Christ’s word to you today.\n“Be still” – that was the command to the raging sea. We can understand that the devil saw to it that the storm was the fiercest the disciples had seen. Jesus turned storm into calm – wind and waves had to obey Him.\nWe can be at peace in the storm when Christ is with us. A hostile environment changes at His word of command.
