“What I have written I have written” [John 19:22]

May 4

“What I have written I have written”. Pilate meant that the wording of the superscription above the cross of Jesus was not going to be changed. How little did he realise the import of his words!
The enemies of the cross, urged on by the devil himself, would have had these words removed. They would take down the cross, seal the tomb and remove every remembrance of the crucifixion, or relegate it to one of any number of martyrs.
But the message from the cross is not for changing. It is written on every page of history. It is as new today as it was when it took place – probably more so, for its message is everywhere. And there is life for a look of faith. Christ died for us.
