“the lion and the adder: the young lion and the dragon” [Psalm 91:13]

May 2

“the lion and the adder: the young lion and the dragon”. This personification of our enemy can represent three kinds of trouble.
The lion coming at us with a bound: we can see him coming. And we can see many of our troubles coming.
The adder or cobra comes on us silently and unexpectedly until we hear the hiss and feel the bite – like the troubles that take us by surprise like a snake lurking in the long grass.
The dragon is more an imaginary creature. Always depicted to frighten us but really nothing real about it. So many troubles are the product of our imagination and never reach us at all: they are merely fear, though we suffer at their hand. God’s promise is that in His Name we shall trample them all under foot.
