“The midwives … let the boys live” [Exodus 1:17(NIV)]

“The midwives … let the boys live”. The Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah, feared God and recognised that the command of Pharaoh to kill all baby boys born to the Israelites was evil.
They did not do as the king commanded, but found a way round the dilemma. They encouraged the Hebrew mothers to have their babies before they arrived, or delayed their arrival until after the delivery! The important thing was that they let the boys live and later thousands of the young Hebrew men who left Egypt for the Promised Land owed their lives to these two brave and resourceful women.
In every generation there have been those despots who sought to thwart the plan of God. But the Lord has had His servants who have recognised the evil intended. We can thank God for all who take their stand against evil men.
