“But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord” [II Samuel 11:27]
August 20, 2024
“But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord”. David no doubt thought he had sewn up the matter. The whole thing was over as far as he was concerned.
The incident makes a sorry picture of failure and intrigue. Nobody acted honourably except Uriah and he lost his life as a result. David was not content with the women he had. Bath-sheba offered no resistance to his advances and Joab, the army commander, acted in collusion as David carefully covered over his sin. The fact that innocent men were sacrificed didn’t seem to matter. Does this happen today?
But David forgot to consider what God thought about it all. It is of no use whatever to make a good job of covering your tracks if what you’ve done displeases the Lord.
