“Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel”. This is the first of two Deborahs in the Bible, the second being a prophetess and judge in Israel. We are only told of the first when she died though she must have made a deep impression upon the life of Rebekah and the household of Isaac. Probably the nurse who accompanied Rebekah when she left home in Mesopotamia to be Isaac’s wife and live in Canaan, she had a long and faithful service. That she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak indicates the esteem in which she was held. It may be that this single reference to Deborah by name is there to remind us that we all can serve the Lord by our work for those He has placed over us.
