”many tax collectors and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples” . Matthew did not keep his conversion secret: rather, he made it the opportunity for his acquaintances to hear Jesus for themselves. So we read that tax collectors and sinners sat at his table. Any not accepted in the synagogue found they were able to meet Jesus around the table in Matthew’s home. Not that Jesus shared with these men in their sinful life but He did make it quite obvious that He loved them (while hating their sin) and wanted to help them.
It’s a pity we don’t have more feasts like this one. Matthew’s workmates accepted the invitation extended to them. Sitting around a table is a good place to talk. When did you last sit and chat the gospel with those you invited to a meal?
