“they left their images there, and David and his men carried them away”. They ‘burned them’ as the AV says. Some things that are left to you are a snare and a hinderance and this is the best treatment to give them. Anything that detracts you from doing God’s will is not worth storage space. David ‘inherited’ the idols of the Philistines he had just conquered. He very wisely took them away. The most innocent things can become idols when they get between a man and the Lord. It is not so much what it is as the place it occupies.
The Lord has created a throne in the heart which He should occupy. If He is denied that rightful place, whatever else is there becomes idol.
