‘a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions’ [Luke 12:15 (RSV)]

July 29, 2023

‘a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions’. There is a desire in the heart of man to possess and own. Collecting a little usually creates the desire to have more.
So we mistakenly ask ‘What is he worth?’ meaning what does he possess. The fallacy is obvious when at the end of life all has to be left behind. In the light of this we ask, ‘Is there nothing more in life than what we leave behind?’ Even when we try to assess what a person has done, we have to recognise that he or she is doing no more.
Some other scale must be found. Is there no link between earth and heaven, no way that we may keep what is done now?
Jesus said that believing in Him imparts everlasting life, that the one who believes will not perish. This is the pearl of greatest price and worth selling all to obtain.
