“If the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? “. A question asked in all sincerity by a servant of the Lord who was genuinely perplexed.
A question only dared to be voiced because Gideon thought he spoke to a man, not an angel – yet the better for being voiced.
A question asked because Gideon misunderstood the statement “The Lord is with you”. The Lord delivered Israel into the hand of the Midianites because of the evil they had done but He was with individuals who, like Gideon, feared Him.
It’s the same in our country today.
