“Jesus wept” [John 11:35]

June 25

“Jesus wept”. Jesus did not weep because Lazarus was suffering, that was over, though He may have wept that Lazarus had been made to suffer. Neither did He weep because He would not see him again – He was soon to raise him up when they would be reunited. He may have wept at the sorrow caused by the loss of those who would not be raised.
Jesus’ tears were more than conforming to the custom when anyone dies. Jesus wept when confronted with the cutting sorrow that sin caused as He was faced with the loss of a friend. He identified Himself with all who feel the keenness of such loss.
But He did not merely weep. He went on to Jerusalem and gave His life so that all who trust might know eternal joy.
