“keep your gifts for yourself” [Daniel 5:17 (NIV)]

“keep your gifts for yourself”. Belshazzar wanted to influence what Daniel said. But Daniel was not open to a bribe. He knew that the gifts of man are nothing compared with being right before God. His obedience to God was not to be compromised by gifts.
For all who want to obey the Lord, there will be times when the offers of the world must be rejected. The way of the world is compromise, dialogue, negotiation – anything to get around the truth. Belshazzar had set himself up against God. He had no regard for what was holy and now faced God’s judgment.
Daniel’s response is in sharp contrast. He honoured God above the trappings of the world. The way of the Lord is at odds with the way of the world. Between the two there is no compromise. Daniel’s example is there for us to follow.
