“the scarlet cord in the window”. No special merit in the cord, though it was red in colour, strong in texture and used to lower the two spies from her window on the walls of Jericho.
It marked Rahab’s covenant with the spies and her house did not perish when Jericho was taken.
It is part of a red line that runs through the Bible from Eden, when an animal was slain to provide coverings of skin for Adam and Eve, via Abel who brought an acceptable animal sacrifice to God, Abraham who was ready to sacrifice his son, the Israelites who painted blood on the doorposts and lintels of their houses, numerous prescribed sacrifices in the Mosaic law, to Jesus whose blood was shed in His atoning sacrifice – and to all who today claim forgiveness through the blood of Christ.
