“all Israel shouted with a great shout” [I Samuel 4:5]

March 1

“all Israel shouted with a great shout”. It isn’t the amount of noise we make that counts, but what we are doing that is important. The Israelites had been smitten in battle by the Philistines. So they fetched the ark of the covenant from Shiloh where it should be kept and brought it into the camp. It was then they shouted, thinking the Lord had come among them. They were mistaken.
Their shout only spurred on the Philistines to greater determination and thirty thousand footmen were slain in the battle that ensued. So rather than a shout, it is obedience to the Lord and quiet confidence in Him that is needed. The shout of triumph in which the people of the Lord engage is not to be confused with misguided actions of disobedience.
