“called in question for today’s uproar” [Acts 19:40(RAV)]

“called in question for today’s uproar”. The town clerk of Ephesus was most anxious that this assembly that got out of hand should disperse without further violence. The mob chanted vociferously, ‘Great is Diana of the Ephesians’ without really knowing why.
We can see here a picture of a greater uproar which has more far-reaching consequences. It is the insurrection of sinful man against the pleadings of the Lord to turn from his sinful ways. Many have been persuaded to do this just as Paul had some success among the Ephesians. But still the majority live their lives on a ‘crash-course’. We do well to remember that we will all be called in question for our behaviour today, whatever day it is. It is in our hands to see that it is not uproar but acquiescence to God’s revealed will that we will follow.
