“he made the storm be still” [Psalm 107:29(RSV)]
June 22
“he made the storm be still”. The catalogue of God’s doings listed in this Psalm makes interesting reading. This part verse is but one of many.
It does not necessarily mean He caused the storm to cease its raging, though that was what happened when Jesus stood among His fearful disciples in the boat and bade the sea to cease her roaring. It does mean that its raging no longer affects or disturbs the heart of those that cry unto the Lord in their trouble. In some cases He gives sleep; in others an awareness of the reality of His love, so that what was frightening loses its dread. The storm that was frightening becomes thrilling as one recognises that the Lord rides upon it. It is a ‘still small voice’ that comes through the cacophany of sound that is around. There need be no turbulence within when Jesus whispers peace.
