“I answered you in the secret place of thunder” [Psalm 81:7 (RSV)]

“I answered you in the secret place of thunder”. Thunder is at the same time both majestic and mysterious. It is frightening yet demands our attention. To the soul that is sensitive to the voice of God in the world of nature it speaks of His invisible might and power.
We cannot pin-point its location and to this extent it is a secret place, though we are left in no doubt when thunder is there. On a number of occasions when God spoke there were those who only said ‘it thundered’, while those in tune heard God’s voice speaking. The whole revelation of God remains unintelligible to most – like the writing on Belshazzar’s wall. But those who dwell in the secret place of the Most High hear their Master’s voice while others pass it off as thunder.
