“O give thanks unto the Lord” [Psalm 136:1]

“O give thanks unto the Lord”. Everything a man has is from the Lord. The Lord made us and in every breath we take the Lord sustains us. All that brings true pleasure and delight to our heart is provided by Him. The blessing of friends and loved ones is part of His loving care. Every engagement and activity into which we can profitably throw ourselves, the satisfaction and feeling of well-being and achievement, the sense of love and of sharing – these are all qualities afforded us by the Sovereign Lord.
But the Psalmist is not merely enjoining us to be thankful. This is a spontaneous exclamation from his own thankful heart: he does not need the goodness of the Lord pointed out to him – he is experiencing it. Be so thankful to the Lord that others will want to join you in your experience.
