“She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial” [Mark 14:8(RAV)]

“She has come beforehand to anoint my body for burial”. We wonder whether these words of Jesus indicate that the lady who came to anoint Jesus in the house of Simon the leper had a special revelation of the passion and death that Jesus was about to experience. It is most likely that hers was a spontaneous expression of love enhanced by a recognition of who Jesus was, that made this lady defy protocol and break the flask of costly oil of spikenard and pour it on Jesus’ head. She did not know that Jesus would describe what she was doing in this way.
None of us knows what purpose may be achieved when we express our love for Jesus. Jesus who gave such love waits to receive in return. We love Him because He first loved us, and this truth binds together the family of God.
