“supposing that gain is godliness” [I Timothy 6:5]

January 8

“supposing that gain is godliness”. There always were those who saw godliness as a means of gain. They will argue that godliness, if it is good, must bring gain. The fallacy lies in the interpretation they place on godliness. True godliness is gain but it is also patterned on the teaching and example of the Lord Jesus. If we would see God we must behold Jesus: if we are to acquire godliness it will be at His hand.

True gain is not to be found in the vaults of a bank nor claimed because a name appears on title deeds.

True gain is known by the man whose soul is safe. He came into life with nothing but somewhere along the way someone told him and God revealed to him the great gift of eternal life in Christ. Taking that brought godliness with contentment – the greatest possible gain.
