“Wisdom is better than strength” [Ecclesiastes 9:16]

January 30

“Wisdom is better than strength”. Force may get things done but they may be the wrong things. Strength is blind without wisdom. If made to choose between the two, the Bible puts wisdom first.
The second part of this verse reminds us of a common injustice we need to fight against, namely, the poor man’s wisdom that is despised and his words not heard.
We must take care not to despise the wisdom of the poor. Because a man is shabbily dressed or considered poor does not mean his words should be discounted.
Wisdom does not demand that its owner has a healthy bank balance, though we mistakenly might think so. Neither must a person be dressed in regal robes for his or her counsel to be as good as that of a monarch.
