“when I heard these words … I sat down and wept and mourned” [Nehemiah 1:4]

February 12

“when I heard these words … I sat down and wept and mourned”. Sorrow is never far away from those whose concern is for their fellowmen. If we would seek to love our neighbour as ourself our heart will go out to those destitute and in distress.
Nehemiah heard that his beloved capital city lay waste. The many miles that separated him from his compatriots did not diminish his sorrow.
Modern communication brings the needs of the world to our immediate attention. Those who seek to follow Christ cannot dismiss these needs as of no concern to them.
Nehemiah’s tears and mourning paved the way for intercession and prayer followed by action according to his position. Those who never weep and mourn know little if anything of real prevailing prayer.
